There are times when we take our bodies for granted... abusing them with lengthy to-do lists of tasks that test the limits of our capacity. We go about our lives as if the “vessels” we have been given are unshakable, unbreakable, and without limits. How often to we thank others for the things they do for us, yet forget to take time to thank our bodies for getting us through the day. From a young age, Sylvester Ochieng's parents gave him “a crystal clear knowledge about God in [his] life.” With a deep respect for a culture of prayer and a healthy reverence for God, Sylvester was well on his way to giving his life in service to God and to God's children. Thomas, often referred to as ‘doubting Thomas,' often gets a bum rap. He just wanted to have the same experience that everyone else had. He had an intimate relationship with Jesus and all he was asking for was a chance to see it for himself. We, too, have our own personal relationship with Christ and with the Divine. Many look to their faith for direction and answers to things happening in the world while others suggest that the church should stick to theology and spirituality. The reality is that churches are speaking up about justice issues facing the world and especially in the United States, but where is Community of Christ' voice in all of this? There are people who wonder why Community of Christ seems silent in the midst of injustices being experienced by so many.  In this Extra Shot episode, which is a cross-post from a personal posting of Matt Frizzell, Matt makes it clear that the church has spoken.  As a matter of fact, we the church, have been speaking for decades through legislation and conference action. There is a lot of history and context, both inside and outside the church, that accompanies the sections in Community of Christ's Doctrine and Covenants. Over the years, some of the sections have been removed due to a lack of alignment with Community of Christ identity, message, mission, and beliefs. Other sections have been questioned because of the language used at the time of writing. Guests, Paul DeBarthe and David Hall share with Mary Anne and Kassie why they feel it is so important to consider a Bicentennial edition of the Doctrine and Covenants (G-8) that fills the gaps left for those who wish to study its message by providing background narratives. It may seem strange that on a Christian Holy day where many disciples will walk around with a smudge of ash on their foreheads for all to see, we have a scripture passage that tells us to pray and fast privately in our “closet.” Why don't we wear the smudge of ash in a place where only we and God can see it? Well, the smudge is a symbol of the condition of our hearts ... repentant, mortal, humble. What matters is not the words we say or the significance of what we gave up for Lent (our act of fasting).  Rather, it's the condition of our hearts when we pray and what we hope to gain in our fasting. The acceptance or accolades of others is not what we're after. What we need is a little more time and space for God. We all have those special places where we've experienced God's presence (the Holy Spirit), and for some reason we let ourselves believe that we need to return to that place to find God again. There's no better place to give a sermon about community than on a plain (aka a level field). All communities may not put everyone on the same level, but in God's Kingdom, every field is a level playing field. The blessings and woes of such a community ought to be felt by all.  In today's passage from the Gospel of Luke, Jesus lays it on the line with the disciples...proclaiming both blessings and woes. What's left for us to decide is if we're going to come down on the blessing side or the woe side of things. There are other ways to determine your abundance than just by counting what's in your “net.” Sometimes our abundance lies in the gifts and skills with which God has blessed us. In today's Gospel passage from Luke, the disciples end up with enough fish to fill two nets and sink their boats, only to have Jesus ask them to leave it behind and follow him. Jesus seemed to know that God's abundant grace combined with their abundant gifts would be enough to do what they were being called to do...fish for people. Have you got what it takes to fish for people? We think so. We tell ourselves ‘It's just not fair!' ... when someone gets something they don't deserve, especially when we think it ought to be given to us ... you know, the righteous ones!  But Jesus was famous for turning things on their head, rather than doing things the way they “ought” to be done. It is, after all, the way of God's reign. Too often we, like those who were in the synagogue when Jesus read from Isaiah, are amazed at Jesus' words ... until we find that they're words of challenge rather than words of praise.
