Recent reforms in historiographical approaches and archival practices have allowed for the rescuing of women from historical obscurity and it is clear that women who exercised political or social influence were not necessarily 'exceptional' or rare. Joan Fitzgerald, Countess of Ormond, Desmond and Ossory and Gráinne Ní Mháille, AKA Grace O'Malley, the so-called Pirate Queen, are two such women whose legacies have benefitted from the increased scholarship on women's history. Mary O'Donnell is an Irish novelist, short story writer, poet and creative writing teacher. She has published several novels, short story and poetry collections. Her work has been translated into Spanish, Portuguese, Hungarian and Italian and she is also a journalist and literary mentor. She has just published her latest collection of short stories, entitled Walking Ghosts.

Mary O’Carroll from Ballyduff spoke to Jerry about her 28-year-old son, Anthony, who is in the National Rehabilitation Hospital, Dublin. Anthony suffered a traumatic brain injury with multiple complex breaks throughout his body in a motorbike racing accident last July during a race in the Isle of Man. Anthony is getting great care from the amazing staff, but Mary says there’s a shortage of physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and speech and language therapists. Jerry also spoke to Marie Ó Mír, CEO of the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists. Jerry also received a statement from the Association of Occupational Therapists of Ireland.

In September of 2010, a group of three men decided they were going to break in and rob Mary's home for money and pills. Richard Fletcher, Keith Baird, and Michael Norrie were high on methamphetamines when they came up with this plan, and ultimately agreed that no harm would be done to the victim. Unfortunately, Norrie shot Mary in the back of the head, and the three men disposed of her body, only for it to be found nearly a month later.
