Mary O’Carroll from Ballyduff spoke to Jerry about her 28-year-old son, Anthony, who is in the National Rehabilitation Hospital, Dublin. Anthony suffered a traumatic brain injury with multiple complex breaks throughout his body in a motorbike racing accident last July during a race in the Isle of Man. Anthony is getting great care from the amazing staff, but Mary says there’s a shortage of physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and speech and language therapists. Jerry also spoke to Marie Ó Mír, CEO of the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists. Jerry also received a statement from the Association of Occupational Therapists of Ireland.

Tidy Towns groups will no longer have to pay for their own insurance, once they are registered with their council. This follows a deal between in local authorities and IPB (Irish Public Bodies) Insurance, to create a community insurance scheme. The comprehensive scheme will include cover for public liability and volunteer insurance. Treasa spoke to Brendan O’Brien of Tralee Tidy Towns, Johnny McGuire of Killarney Tidy Towns, and Mary O’Hanlon of Listowel Tidy Towns. Separately, Johnny described his meeting with Pope Francis eleven years ago as wonderful and uplifting.

Take a trip to Sheffield, Vermont with Katie and Liz on this week's episode of True Crime New England as they discuss the tragic fate of well-loved grandmother of nine, 78-year-old Mary “Pat” O'Hagan. In September of 2010, a group of three men decided they were going to break in and rob Mary's home for money and pills. Richard Fletcher, Keith Baird, and Michael Norrie were high on methamphetamines when they came up with this plan, and ultimately agreed that no harm would be done to the victim. Unfortunately, Norrie shot Mary in the back of the head, and the three men disposed of her body, only for it to be found nearly a month later. Tune in to hear the details of their individual trials and their ultimate punishments.

In February 2021, Dr. O'Connor became a founder and Chief Medical Officer at Vori Health to advance her passion for transforming musculoskeletal care. Dr. O'Connor has published extensively on clinical research and innovation in care pathways, hip fracture care, limb salvage for tumor, sex and gender differences in arthritis, and regenerative medicine. At Yale, she led the creation of a multidisciplinary hip fracture program which transformed clinical outcomes and promoted innovation in the care of this vulnerable population. She authors a quarterly column in Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research entitled, “Equity360: Gender, Race and Ethnicity,” to advance health equity in the orthopedic profession. Biddy Early (1798-1874) was born in Killanena and lived most of her life in Feakle in Co. Clare.  She was a ‘bean feasa' or wise woman (literally a ‘woman of knowledge'). Former cabinet minister and Fianna Fail TD Mary O'Rourke has died at the age of 87. She was a TD for almost three decades, served in a variety of cabinet roles, and was also deputy leader of Fianna Fail and leader of the Seanad. For a reflection on Mary O'Rourke's life we hear from Harry McGee, political correspondent with the Irish Times.

Mary O'Callaghan Mary O'Callaghan, MA, EAP, is the founder-director of Oscailt. Mary is an accredited psychotherapist and supervisor and has also been exploring meditation practices for nearly 40 years. During that time, she spent eight years living as a Buddhist nun and underwent intensive training in Eastern psychology and meditation. She has led meditation retreats in Europe and Asia and is passionate about integrating mindfulness into everyday life. It starts on Monday the 23rd of September and runs until the 11th of November. Classes will be held on Monday evenings from 7.15 pm – 9.45 pm. There will be a half day of practice on Sunday the 3rd of November from 10.00 am – 2.00 pm. The fee is €350. While many of us would be quick to complain about being treated harshly by a loved one, friend or colleague, the reality is that we tend to treat ourselves in ways we would never treat anyone else. When things go wrong for us, how quickly we use expressions of self-blame such as what's the matter with me? or what have I done now? or there I go again!. This habit of negative and critical self-talk is undermining, unproductive and stressful. Mindful self-compassion helps us, first to recognise these habits as they arise (mindfulness) and then to let go of our harshness towards ourselves and, instead, to develop understanding, tenderness and kindness (self-compassion). This eight-week programme is for anyone who has some previous experience of mindfulness and who wants to cultivate compassion for themselves and for others.
