As the high school football season gets set to kickoff this week across Frederick County, Pat Cadden, the second-year head football coach at Frederick High, is this week's guest on The Final Score podcast. Cadden chats with host Greg Swatek about his team at Frederick High this season, which is once again brimming with talent at the skill positions. The Cadets added a pair of transfers from Walkersville, running back Jordan Bennett and receiver Darius Eubank, to an already talented cast of players. The coach talks about how far the program has come over the last five to six seasons and what it will take to breakthrough and win a state championship. He said this team is one of the fastest he has ever coached. So, how will the Cadets utilize it during games? And what sort of difference will it make in their overall success? Prior to this conversation, FNP sports writer Alexander Dacy joins Greg for a thorough team-by-team look at the high school football season in Frederick County. The guys talk about each team's strengths, weaknesses and overall expectations heading into the season. What teams are poised to make a run at a state championship? Plus, Alexander shares his thoughts and observations from the kickoff event at Frederick High School for the second season of girls flag football in the county as a varsity sport. What teams are poised to do well? And how will they adjust to playing teams outside of the county this season?

With his team battling to win every match that it can, Catoctin High wrestling coach Rick Reeder is this week's guest on The Final Score podcast. Reeder chats with host Greg Swatek about his small and mighty team. The Cougars can't fill every weight class, which forces them to forfeit four to five matches per dual meet. Yet, in the matches they actually do wrestle, they often win, which keeps them competitive against just about any team. A graduate of Frederick High School, Reeder also talks about how he got his start into wrestling and coaching, as well as the rise of girls wrestling and what it means for the sport. He talks about his time spent as a player and head coach with the semi-pro football team, the Frederick Outlaws, and shares how he became the first head coach for the Baltimore Charm in the now defunct Lingerie Football League. Was that job really as great as some people might think? Prior to that conversation, FNP sports writers Alexander Dacy and John Cannon join Greg, as they always do, to discuss the Frederick County sports scene. This week's topics include a buzzer beater for the Catoctin High boys basketball team and a big win for the Frederick High girls.

After winning Class 4A state cross titles last Saturday at Hereford High School with some of the fastest times run on the hilly course, Frederick High senior Caroline Gregory and Thomas Johnson senior James Partlow are this week's guests on The Final Score podcast. First, Gregory and one of her coaches, Sage Norton, chat with host Greg Swatek about the Cadet's second state championship in three years. Gregory passed the reigning 4A champion in the final 300 meters of the race and posted her best time of 18 minutes, 30.71 seconds to claim the championship. Her victory also helped the Frederick girls place second in the 4A team standings. How was she able to pull off the victory? What was her approach to the race? How will she look back on her time as a cross-country runner at Frederick High School? All of that and more is discussed. Then, Partlow returns to the podcast to talk about capping his dominant season for TJ with his first state title. His winning time was a personal-best 15:39.28, which is more than a two-minute improvement over the times he was running two years ago. How was he able to improve so much? What did it mean to him to finally claim a state title? And how much pressure was he feeling going into the race as a heavy favorite to win it? Those questions and more are answered. Prior to that, FNP sports writer Alexander Dacy joins Greg to recap recent Frederick County fall playoff action and help set the scene for this week's state football quarterfinals. How might the seven teams still alive from Frederick County fare?

In 2013, math teacher, Karine Ptak and her colleagues at Frederick High School in Maryland faced a significant challenge. Their students had an "alarming failure rate" on the Maryland State High School Assessment in Algebra with Data Analysis (HSA). Ptak and three of her colleagues knew they had to create a new approach. They targeted what they called the "middle range kids." "Kids who defintly have the ability but somehow have been left behind," says Ptak. The educators started surveying a group of students and they learned two key things. Traditional class structures were not workingStudents were not doing their homework No More Mandatory Homework After polling their students, Ptak and her coworkers learned that 73 percent of their students didn't do the homework because they didn't know what to do. And 21 percent said they did not have the time. Ptak says, a lot of their students had to work after school and a lot of them had to watch younger siblings. So the teachers decided to make a drastic change. They eliminated mandatory homework and they decided to use class time differently. The Traditional Math Class The typical math class structure was for the teachers to do a lot of lecturing, go over a few examples, and then send the students home with math problems to work through on their own. Students that were not able to do the work at home often began to shut down. So the teachers mixed things up. They got rid of the warm-up period where they would review homework from the day before. Doing so allowed for instruction on new lessons to begin earlier in the class. "We did the bulk of the practice happened towards the middle of class," says Ptak. Students had the opportunity to work on their own, they worked in groups, they worked online." This gave students access to technology in class, which was important because many students did not have that access at home.
