Record-setting Tar Heels superstar Ethan Strand returns to the show today as he gears up for the Indoor Track and Field Championships this March in Virginia. The year 2025 has been good to this mid-distance star, as he ran a remarkable 3:48.32 indoor mile in Boston on February 1. This performance cemented Ethan as the fastest indoor miler in NCAA history while also positioning himself as the third-fastest indoor mile runner ever. This rising legend also owns the NCAA record in the 3,000m; he ran 7:30.15 in Boston at the end of 2024, famously out-kicking his similarly-stellar teammate, Parker Wolfe. Ethan also ran his first-ever indoor 5k and won in impressive fashionwith a time of 13:26.60 at the ACC Indoor Championships in March.Prior to entering the conversation for being on the pantheon of the greatest NCAA runners ever, Ethan attended Vestavia Hills High in Birmingham, Alabama, where he was a two-time Alabama Gatorade Cross Country Player of the Year winner (2019 and 2020). Ethan comes from coaching parents, as his father, Scott, is a former coach on the Alabama men's track team, and his mother, Lori, was a cross-country coach at Samford University. In today's conversation, Ethan walks me through his past few months of performances including two NCAA records and winning the ACC 5k, we discuss XC strength, why things have clicked recently for him, the inside scoop on the UNC DMR, his goals going into Nationals, and his long-term vision for outdoors. Take the opportunity to learn from one of the greatest to ever do it at the NCAA level. Tap into the Ethan Strand Special. “But also in the back of my mind, and with talking to Craig [Nowak], was that I would have so much regret if I stopped now. I feel like I have not reached my potential and that's the biggest thing that I want to do: be able to see how fast I can go and how far I can go.”My guest for today's episode is Sinclaire Johnson. She's the 2023 U.S. 1500m champion, a two-time world championship finalist, and the sixth-fastest American woman in history at 1500m. Sinclaire has proven time and time again that she belongs among the best–not just in the United States, but also in the world. But the road hasn't always been easy. 2024 was a year of highs and lows for her: a two-second personal best and a stunning 3:56 at the Olympic Trials final, but also a 4th place finish that left her just outside of the team for Paris. Adding in her two injuries that disrupted both her Trials buildup and her postseason, it's been a year of recalibrating. It's also been a year of reassessing and figuring out what comes next.In this episode, we get into the emotional rollercoaster of the Trials, her decision to leave the Union Athletics Club, why she's taking full control of her training under the guidance of her fiancé, Craig Nowak. We also talk about what she's learned from years of navigating injuries, her new approach to staying healthy, and how she's setting herself up for success in 2025, starting with this weekend's U.S. Indoor Track and Field Championships.Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on Instagram Guest: Sinclaire Johnson | @sinclairejohnson on InstagramSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSKETONE-IQ: Level up your training with Ketone-IQ – a clean shot of energy with no sugar or caffeine. During his tenure at Stanford, the teams secured ten podium finishes in NCAA Championship competitions, with the men's track and field/cross country program winning the John McDonnell Division I Program of the Year in 2019. His coaching prowess was evident as he led the women's cross-country team at Georgetown University to a national championship in 2011. In today's conversation, Coach Milt & Smith discuss their friendship, being roommates in college, lessons learned from their college coach, Coach Patrick Henner, how they help each other in the day-to-day, and so much more! This conversation was truly legendary and such a privilege to have. I hope you all take the time to listen and be enlightened by two legends of the sport! In this What's What with Klutz episode, I provide personal training updates, highlights recent indoor track races emphasizing women's distance running (duh), and shares thoughts on the role and perceptions of influencers in the running community. After overcoming a foot injury, I talk about my return to training, detailing the excitement of running 35 miles over six days a week, alongside biking and strength training. I share plans to participate in upcoming races, including the Valkyrie trail race and the Vail hill climb, and hint at a birthday challenge involving running 34 miles. The episode then transitions to discuss the world of women's indoor track, celebrating recent achievements and expressing enthusiasm for the sport's future, particularly focusing on athletes like Parker Valby. Lastly, the discussion turns to the influence of social media on running, debating the merits and criticisms of influencers receiving free race entries and the expectations placed on these individuals for their content and personal training choices. 00:00 Welcome to a Solo Episode with Klutz and Birdie! 01:06 Diving Into Training Updates and Future Race Plans 12:04 Exciting Highlights from Recent Indoor Track Races 20:56 Anticipation for the Olympic Year and Athlete Highlights 21:34 The Buzz Around Parker's Training and Cross Training Insights 23:24 The Debate Over Influencers and Free Marathon Bibs 28:28 Expectations and Responsibilities of Influencers in Running 33:05 Training Philosophies and Social Media Perceptions 39:07 Closing Thoughts and Listener Engagement Links: 5000m World Indoor Track Championships: https://youtu.be/AiVQY4xHCU4?si=O36EXUAvFcq8VHDZ 1500m World Indoor Track Championships: https://youtu.be/BzwPy4HmU0s?si=2BLxinPIK4JJn_NS 5000m NCAA Indoor Track Championships: https://youtu.be/cWA0_Wow3TM?si=riHQWBTwYEad86es 3000m NCAA Indoor Track Championships: https://youtu.be/Gxo4kmemDEU?si=GGlAZhbJhieZe502 Katy's post: https://www.instagram.com/p/C4EFVAqv7y0/?igsh=NzdxZnV1ZnJ4bW1m _____ Get 15% off your first order of Precision Fuel & Hydration: https://visit.pfandh.com/3TgaDkf CONNECT WITH ME: Apply for run coaching Subscribe to my newsletter Instagram TikTok Website Email --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/coaching-klutz/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/coaching-klutz/support

“Truthfully, this training season, I have been grinding like I've never grind before. I think getting second in Budapest was a blessing in disguise. Last year, I was working hard but wasn't doing the last rep of abs or finishing the last rep of 150s as hard as possible. I was going through the motions. This year, I am taking every rep and making it like my first rep…This year, I am just giving myself a chance. It's almost insane to watch myself do this because I've never been that die-hard of a track athlete. This year, I'm honing in on that. I think that also comes with my maturity in the sport. I'm turning 25 this year. I feel like I'm getting older and figuring out the way of life a little bit.” Tara Davis-Woodhall joins the show just days after winning the U.S. Indoor Track and Field Championships. She went 7.18m for the world lead, the second longest mark in U.S. women's history and moved her to No. 6 on the all-time world list. Last year, she earned her first global championship medal with a silver at the World Championships in Budapest. She is the U.S. long jump favorite for the 2024 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials, where she'll try to make her second Olympic team. She was sixth at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Among the topics discussed in this episode: – Why she decided to give the 60m hurdles a try and how it benefits her long jump – Her reaction to jumping 7.18m – What are her goals for the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow – What is her training group like under coach Travis Geopfert – Sandi Morris' influence on her in the weight room – How has her mindset changed from how she approached the Tokyo Olympics and future championships – Her reaction to World Athletics' proposal to change the long jump – What event is she looking forward to the most as a fan at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials Make sure you subscribe, download and listen to the show on Spotify and Apple Podcasts so you don't miss out on the latest episode.
