Governor Wes Moore of Maryland was elected less than three years ago, but he's already on the shortlist of potential Democratic presidential candidates for 2028. In 2022, the former combat veteran, investment banker and nonprofit CEO became just the third Black person ever elected governor in the United States. But with a large port and one in ten workers on the federal payroll, Maryland is particularly vulnerable to DOGE cuts and President Trump's trade war. Plus, the state just had to raise taxes and cut $2 billion in spending to close a $3 billion budget deficit. Kara and Gov. Moore and Kara discuss how this approach to Trump has evolved, whether he'll run in 2028 (like George Clooney and many others seem to want him to), his advice to the Democratic Party, and how Maryland's latest tax reform and budget cuts could be a “roadmap” for the rest of the country. It's been one month of Trump 2.0. One month of drama. One month of chaos. One month of pain. And Trump continues to roll unimpeded. The Democrats have put up little to no resistance and there are no saviors in sight. But we've got a glimmer of hope. A leader who could emerge as the one to take the helm and restore honor (and sanity) to the office. Maybe one day soon. We've got Maryland Governor Wes Moore back on the show for the fourth time—and for an exclusive one-on-one that's the kind of frank and honest deep dive you can't get anywhere else. Our host, Paul Rieckhoff and Governor Moore go way back. And they're not holding back. This one is special. And it's the perfect time for it. It's a candid conversation between two friends about what it's like to lead when the world is on fire. And who can lead us out of that fire. And how you can help. The Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) just swore in its new members for the 119th session of Congress. Governor Wes Moore, only the third African American elected U.S. governor, ran down why this session is the most historic. "This is a history-making CBC because we have a record 62 members of the Congressional Black Caucus that we are celebrating today. It's a history-making CBC because this CBC represents more states than ever before in our country's history. We don't just have the largest representation of Black women in CBC's history, but also for the first time, we have two Black women in the United States Senate representing the CBC." Those two new women are Lisa Blunt Rochester, elected as Delaware's first female Black senator, and, in Maryland, Angela Alsobrooks. The CBC started in 1971 with just 13 founding members. Christina's journey with cannabis is anything but ordinary. Growing up in Washington DC and initially shying away from the plant due to severe reactions, she never imagined it would play a pivotal role in her life. Yet, as she stepped into the cannabis business world, she rediscovered cannabis through a lens of wellness and mindfulness. Together, we unravel how understanding dosages and product sources transformed her perspective and how staying true to one's mission can guide intentional and meaningful cannabis use. The ever-evolving concept of wellness takes center stage as we explore its intersection with the cannabis industry. Drawing from my experiences with Conscious Capitalism and the founding of Rooted Therapeutics, we reflect on how business can indeed be a force for good. We also spotlight the efforts of Standard Wellness in Maryland, as we discuss the importance of empathy, open-minded parenting, and how personal definitions of wellness can shift over time amidst commercial pitfalls. Cannabis is more than just a plant; it's a tool for creativity and stress relief, especially within Black and Latino communities facing historic challenges. Christina and I delve into how changing the narrative can promote participation and self-expression in these communities. We also tackle leadership challenges, particularly the balancing act between personal wellness and organizational demands. From making tough decisions to maintaining community connections, we highlight the necessity of intentional wellness efforts, supportive networks, and the ongoing journey of achieving balance in a demanding world.
