Golf has long been the most popular pastime of professional jockeys. Some have attained a very high level in the sport, others are happy to “puddle” around once or twice a week with a few mates. Highly respected southern districts jockey Richard Bensley has come up with a recreation far removed from conventional sports. Thanks to the influence of his late father Bryson, Richard is a master exponent of the ancient art of carriage driving. He frequently jumps into a sparkling old world buggy drawn by a high stepping Hackney and competes at the highest level. He's also ridden more than 900 winners in a successful 25 year career mostly on southern district tracks. Richard Bensley is a podcast guest with a difference. He talks firstly about a promising mare he's been riding just lately for Goulburn trainer Patrick Murphy. He acknowledges the talents of former jockey Pat Murphy. Richard talks about the equine skills of his late father Bryson, his father-in-law Rick Jones and late mother Joanne who was also a noted horsewoman.  The successful jockey talks about his Goulburn property and the large number of horse drawn vehicles tucked away in a shed. One of those vehicles is a century old hearse.  He talks about the never ending work involved in maintaining leather harness and brass fittings. Richard talks about the English bred Hackney, the horse most commonly used in carriage driving around the world. The breed is diminishing but the jockey does his bit to help save the species. He pays tribute to wife Melissa, son Mitchell and daughter Chelsea. Richard remembers the occasion when breeder Peter Stewart told Bryson that his son's feet were too big for him to even consider becoming a jockey.  He recalls a chance conversation his father had with trainer Ken Callaughan who'd only just moved to the new Goulburn training complex. That conversation changed Richard's life. The jockey hasn't forgotten Callaughan's all round horsemanship skills. He remembers his hometrack debut on a Callaughan runner in 2000, and the thrill of his first win at Cootamundra. Richard says it took him a long time to ride a city winner. He acknowledges his successful association with trainer Nick Olive for whom he rode more than one hundred winners. Richard looks back on some of the nice horses he got to ride for the Olive stable. The jockey looks back with delight on a Black Opal Stakes win for old friend trainer Gratz Vella. He takes us through his win on You're Canny. Richard expresses his appreciation of the staunch support he had from the Vella stable. He looks back on a winning association with Loved Up, a talented mare from the Brett Cavanough yard.  Richard remembers a black type win on Loved Up in the Scone Guineas and the unlikely circumstances that brought him a second stakes win on the same day. The forty two year old speaks highly of The Monstar, another talented horse from the Brett Cavanough stable. He got to ride the sprinter in a couple of high quality races in Melbourne. Richard names a handful of outstanding country jockeys for whom he's had high regard throughout his career. He looks back on a second placing in a Rosehill TAB Highway destined to be promoted by default. Richard confirms that retirement is not yet on the radar. That applies to race riding and carriage driving.

Although Ahithophel's counsel to seek to destroy only David's life is sound, the LORD defeats this counsel through Hushai's shrewd words to Absalom. David's allies in Jerusalem manage to get news to David so that he is able to avoid Absalom's plan, leading Ahithophel to take his own life. As the two sides draw up for battle, David's allies strengthen him in the wilderness.  Rev. Rick Jones, Chaplain and Vice President of Spiritual Life at the Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch in Minot, ND, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study 2 Samuel 17:1-29.  "A Kingdom Unlike All the Nations” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through 1-2 Samuel. This time in Israel's history has its highs and lows, but the LORD's faithfulness never wavers. He provides His Word to be proclaimed faithfully through prophets like Samuel and Nathan. Even as princes like Saul and David sit on an earthly throne, the LORD remains King over His people, even as He does now and forever through the Lord Jesus Christ. Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Two pastors engage with God's Word to sharpen not only their own faith and knowledge, but the faith and knowledge of all who listen. Submit comments or questions to: listener@kfuo.org

Issue 194 - Thunderbolt Ross Intro Captain America: Brave New World reaction coming to Patreon Background (1:38) General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in The Incredible Hulk #1 (May 1962) Lieutenant General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross oversees gamma bomb project that ultimately leads to the creation of the Hulk (Bruce Banner) Grew up in a military family, and was focused on serving his country from a young age - joined the Army Air Corps (later Air Force) and worked his way up through the ranks Bruce's growing relationship with Ross' daughter Betty was a source of frustration and anger for him, as was the recurring nuisance of the Hulk - Ross made it his personal mission to find and destroy the Hulk Several times he allied with villains to battle the Hulk, which ultimately led to his dismissal from the military Betty and Bruce get engaged, but the Leader turns Hulk savage, and the wedding is called off - Betty later marries Glenn Talbot, and Ross is satisfied that Banner will never be his son-in-law When Talbot was captured by the Soviets in a rescue mission to save Ross, his apparent death fractured his relationship with Betty, as well as a demotion at work because of his inability to capture the Hulk Betty divorced Talbot and revealed she still loved Bruce - enraged by this, Ross allied with MODOK to have the Abomination kill the Hulk, but Betty caught wind of the plan and accused her father of treason - he was discharged from the Air Force and nearly committed suicide When Bruce and Betty get married, Ross shows up at the wedding with a gun to stop the ceremony - Rick Jones intervenes and is shot non-fatally In a SHIELD experiment he merges with Zzzax, a being of sentient electrical energy - in a battle with a mutant, he expends his energy to save Betty, and dies His body was resurrected by the Leader, and he rejoins the Air Force After Betty is killed by the Abomination and Hulk is exiled by the Illuminati, Ross sinks into an alcoholic depression - when Steve Rogers is shot, he is visited by MODOK and the Leader and offered a chance to gain Hulk-like powers - he then becomes Red Hulk, and his first act is to kill the Abomination for murdering Betty Ross' identity as the Hulk is kept secret for over two years before being revealed during World War Hulks He later joins the Avengers, where he befriended an LMD named Annie that helped give him some perspective and understanding about things Temporarily bonds with both the Venom symbiote and the Spirit of Vengeance, becoming a being known as the Circle of Four - this is to defeat Blackheart, son of Mephisto Gets depowered by Doc Green, a super-intelligent version of the Hulk Issues - Theme is “a small river flowing long enough becomes a canyon” (7:10) When tradition becomes a trap Overprotective of his daughter (13:44) Oh yeah, the Hulk stuff (25:15) Break (29:06) Plugs for Play Comics & Geek Peak Treatment (30:19) In-universe -  Out of universe - (32:37) Skit (39:51) Hello General Ross, I'm Dr. Issues. - Doctor, with all due respect, let's set the record straight. I didn't come here for treatment. I came here for a clean bill of health. I've been involved in enough government missions, secret protocols, and super-powered expeditions that I should be the last one to hide from any flaws. I'm not perfect, but I don't have to be. And that was before I learned about getting red in the face. Well, that is a hot start, General -I don't do jokes, if you don't mind. There are serious matters at hand. But you…I'll keep that in mind. Sheesh. There are always serious matters at hand. That's how the world works. That doesn't mean they all have to involve you. -Agreed. I pick my spots. But those are enormous spots. I know my enemy better than they know themselves. That's what's lacking in battles nowadays. The foe has no concept of planning. So many people think being random makes you dangerous. It just makes you a fool. Well, not to sound condescending, but I doubt all of your plans go the way you want them to. -A plan is useless. PLANNING is indispensable. Do you know who said that? Dwight Eisenhower. So you enjoy the process necessary to reach goals, and not just the goal itself. -If I didn't then I would have stopped existing a long time ago. I think people get that wrong about me. They think I'm some madman that wants to destroy the Hulk at all costs. And that was wrong…how? -I was never a madman. I'm calculating the whole way through. The heat thing says otherwise -Emotion in battle, Doctor. It's something you can't wrap your head around. Oh yeah, I get the rage, but in the fog of war, that can be the guide to see you through. No hippie woo woo love fest is going to save you when bullets are zipping and bombs are dropping. The only time you bring in God is to say “Thank God it's over” and you've won. You present more demure than expected. -You sound like one of those Gen Z types when you say that. You're a grown man. Act like it. So no social media memes; understood sir. But are you really past everything that's listed in your file? Banner? Betty? Intelligencia? Avengers? It says here your own likeness was killed! None of that sounds traumatic to you? -Of course it does. So what? We all have trauma. I used to let it eat at me, just shove it down my own throat, and let it all come out when the time is right. But with what I have now, there's no secrets. It's on my skin, in my veins, and radiating through the air. I finally found a way to have nothing to hide. My choices, my fights, my consequences. Anything to add to that? You're hitting the same note. What brings you enjoyment? How about sadness? Do you have any fears left? -You're breaking the cardinal rule; you're supposed to ask one question at a time. I'm sad that too many people think too small for their entire lives. I find joy in being one of the few living creatures to destroy multiple so-called badasses because I can adjust tactically and not be held down by magical thinking. I fear that anything less than a perfect rating in this assessment will leave me with a permanent mark that will have me use your office as a rage room.  *pause* Didn't you shoot someone at your daughter's wed -*interrupting* RAGE. ROOM.  You don't have to be so pushy about it. -So, are you slapping the PTSD label on like everyone else? No, I'll think outside the box and go I-G-E-D. -What the hell is that? Intermittent Gamma Explosive Disorder -*Groans* Doc Samson was right about you. The tribes of Reuben and Gad, along with half of the tribe of Manasseh, approach Moses with a request to inherit land on the east side of the Jordan River, because that area is fitting for raising their livestock. Moses initially reacts with anger against this request, remembering how Israel's refusal to go into the Promised Land forty years ago had led to an entire generation dying in the wilderness. These two-and-a-half tribes assure Moses that they will indeed help their brothers in taking the Promised Land, fully believing the LORD's promise for all Israel. The LORD grants this request through Moses with solemn promises made by the leaders of tribes, who begin to receive the LORD's gift to them even before they have crossed the Jordan River.  Rev. Rick Jones, Chaplain and Vice President of Spiritual Life at the Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch in Minot, ND, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Numbers 32:1-42.   "Wilderness Wanderings” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through the book of Numbers. After the LORD delivers His people from slavery in Egypt, He leads them toward the Promised Land. Although the first generation of Israelites proves faithless, the LORD remains faithful to His people and brings a new generation of Israelites to the plains of Moab. This strengthens us to listen to God's promises today and stay faithful to Him as He guides us toward resurrection life.  Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. God speaks through the prophet Hosea, addressing Israel's unfaithfulness in vivid imagery. He likens the nation to an unfaithful wife, chasing after false gods and forgetting the covenant with Him. Despite the people's betrayal, God warns of coming judgment, stripping away their prosperity and exposing their shame. Yet, underlying the harsh words is a call for repentance, as God desires to restore His people from their waywardness.  The Rev. Rick Jones, Chaplain and Vice President of Spiritual Life at the Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch, ND, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Hosea 2:1-13.  Hosea tells the powerful story of a prophet commanded to marry an unfaithful woman, Gomer, as a living symbol of God's boundless love for Israel despite its repeated betrayals. Through heartbreak and redemption, Hosea's marriage becomes a vivid portrayal of how deeply God desires His people to return to Him, even when they chase after idols. Packed with raw emotion, prophetic warnings, and a message of divine mercy, this book captures God's relentless pursuit and offers a stirring reminder that restoration is always possible—through Jesus--no matter how far one has wandered.

In this second burden of the word of the LORD given by Zechariah, the prophet speaks about the way the LORD will save Jerusalem. Her enemies will stagger in drunkenness as they slice themselves open trying to lift this heavy stone. Their horses and riders will be useless in battle, for the LORD will devour His enemies by fire as all His people, from the greatest to the least, receive His victory. As the LORD promises to pour the blessing of His Spirit upon His people, the surprise comes. His people will look upon Him as the One they have pierced. The salvation for God's people comes through the Pierced Savior, Jesus, as Zechariah once again proclaims the suffering and death of the Christ during Holy Week.  Rev. Rick Jones, Chaplain and Vice President of Spiritual Life at the Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch in Minot, ND, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Zechariah 12:1-14.   "The Post-Exilic Prophets” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through the books of Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi. Through the preaching of these faithful men, the LORD sent His Word to His people who returned home after their exile in Babylon. Not only did the LORD encourage His people in the work of rebuilding the temple, but even more than that, He pointed them forward to the fulfillment of all the Old Testament promises in the coming kingdom of our true King and great High Priest, Jesus Christ.

We were expecting a little more noir and a little less Punisher. Then we continue Thunderbolts with issue #3 in which the former Masters of Evil meet the current Masters of Evil! Though the LORD had made use of Babylon to carry out His righteous anger against His people, Babylon went too far. Babylon became proud and considered herself a god above all others. The LORD dares Babylon to rescue itself by making use of sorcery and astrology, but Babylon is powerless to save itself from the LORD's judgment. Only the LORD is God; only the LORD can redeem. Rev. The Rev. Rick Jones, Chaplain and Vice President of Spiritual Life for the Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch, in, Minot, ND, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Micah 1. This chapter sets the tone for the whole book, emphasizing the themes of judgment, retribution, and the need for repentance. Starting with an ominous proclamation of judgment against Samaria and Jerusalem, the prophet paints a vivid picture of impending destruction and upheaval, describing the coming devastation due to idolatry, corruption, and social injustices. Micah's message highlights God's righteous anger towards the people's disobedience and warns of the consequences they will face for their sins. Micah, one of the few prophets of his time still faithful to God in Israel, rebukes the societal injustices of the Israelites and pronounces judgment on the wickedness of the religious and political leaders of the time. Notably, Micah is the prophet who foretells that the future messianic ruler will be born in Bethlehem. Jesus not only fulfilled that prophecy, but he embodies Micah's call for justice, mercy, and humility, bringing restoration and reconciliation through his life, death, and resurrection.

Kaitlin Armstrong has been sentenced to 90 years in prison and fined $10,000 for the first-degree murder of professional cyclist Anna Moriah "Mo" Wilson. After deliberating for several hours following Armstrong's guilty verdict, the jury reached this decision.*    The courtroom was filled with tension and emotion as Kaitlin Armstrong received her sentence for the murder of Anna Moriah 'Mo' Wilson. The jury's decision, which came a day after finding her guilty of first-degree murder, carries a 90-year prison term and a significant financial penalty.    Anna Moriah Wilson, a promising gravel racer, was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds at a friend's home in Austin, Texas, on May 11, 2022, in what appeared to be a targeted homicide. Her tragic death shocked the community, leading to a lengthy trial that culminated in Armstrong's sentencing.    Prosecutors urged the jury to consider the calculated nature of the murder and Armstrong's attempt to evade justice, along with the profound impact of Wilson's murder on her family and friend, Caitlin Cash, who found Wilson injured in her home.    State attorney Guillermo Gonzalez asked the jurors to start with a minimum sentence of 40 years in prison, stating, "The fact that this was a calculated crime and the defendant's attempt to flee should be taken into account in the sentencing decision."    During the two-day sentencing hearing, the court heard poignant testimonies from members of Wilson's grief-stricken family. Her mother, Karen Wilson, described her daughter as "a unique person who accomplished a lifetime of achievements in 25 years." Her brother, Matthew Wilson, expressed the pain of losing his "closest confidant."    The defense presented witnesses, including Armstrong's father and sister, but did not make a specific recommendation for the sentence. Armstrong's father, Mike Armstrong, expressed condolences to the Wilson family, acknowledging the severity of their loss.    Throughout the weeks-long trial, prosecutors presented a compelling case against Armstrong, including video, cellphone, ballistic, and DNA evidence. They asserted that Armstrong had access to her then-boyfriend's communications with Wilson and could track Wilson's location through a fitness app. A DNA expert testified that there was "very strong support" for the presence of Armstrong's DNA on Wilson's bicycle.    Furthermore, prosecutors presented evidence indicating that Armstrong's vehicle was seen near the scene of the crime on the night of the homicide, and that her firearm was used in the murder.    Rick Jones, a Travis County prosecutor, emphasized that only Kaitlin Armstrong fit the facts presented in the case. However, the defense argued that Armstrong was "trapped in a nightmare of circumstantial evidence" and criticized the police for not investigating other potential suspects.    Armstrong, who had pleaded not guilty, did not testify in her own defense during the trial.    Following her police interview about Wilson's murder, Armstrong sold her Jeep and fled to Costa Rica. She evaded authorities for 43 days before being arrested at a hostel on Santa Teresa Beach in Provincia de Puntarenas. Prosecutors revealed that just days before her arrest, Armstrong spent a substantial sum on plastic surgery.    In addition to the murder charge, Armstrong faced accusations of attempting to escape custody before the trial began. She was charged with escape causing bodily injury, a felony, after briefly evading corrections officers during transport to a medical appointment.    Kaitlin Armstrong's sentencing marks the end of a high-profile case that has captivated the public's attention and left a community grappling with the loss of a talented cyclist and the consequences of a devastating crime. Rev. Rick Jones, Chaplain and Vice-President of Spiritual Life at the Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch in Minot, ND, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study 1 Corinthians 2:1-16. St. Paul reminds the Corinthians of his time among them. His preaching was focused on Christ and Him crucified so that the Corinthians would not place their faith in the wisdom of the preacher, but in the power of God. This does not mean that there is no wisdom in Christianity; rather, it means that the wisdom of Christianity is unknown to the world. The fact that the rulers of the world crucified the Lord of Glory is evidence that they had only worldly wisdom. True spiritual wisdom is given only by the Holy Spirit through the preaching of Christ crucified. This is what the Corinthians have received and must continue to trust. “Nothing But Christ Crucified” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through the epistle of 1 Corinthians. In response to correspondence from the Christians in Corinth and reports about matters arising in the congregation, St. Paul writes to address various matters of Christian faith and life. Throughout it all, he directs our attention to the power and wisdom of God for our salvation: Christ crucified.

Rev. Rick Jones, Chaplain and Vice-President of Spiritual Life at the Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch in Minot, ND, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Leviticus 7:1-38. The LORD continues to give more explicit instructions to His priests for the way they will carry out the sacrifices for the people of Israel. The details remind us both of the seriousness and the gift of encountering God's holiness. He desires to be at table with His people in the peace offering, and He desires to provide for His priests through various parts of many different sacrifices. He is the One who determines what is clean and unclean in order to bring His people closer to Himself in a way that will bless them. In all of this, the LORD points forward to the work of our great High Priest, Jesus. “The Holiness of God” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through the book of Leviticus. Because God desired to dwell among His sinful people for their blessing rather than their destruction, He gave them the sacrifices and regulations of Leviticus to bestow His holiness upon them. In this way, the book of Leviticus points us to Christ who is our great High Priest who offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice to make us holy before God.
