This week on Diverse Thinking Different Learning, we welcome Dr. Aditya Nagrath. Dr. Nagrath is the founder of Elephant Learning Mathematics Academy and helps students overcome math anxiety, rapidly advancing their skills with just ten minutes of practice a few times a week. He holds a PhD in Mathematics and Computer Sciences and has over three decades of experience as a software engineer, entrepreneur, author, and speaker, working on a wide range of projects from atomic clocks to mobile apps. Dr. Nagrath joins us for this episode to discuss mathematics anxiety - where it comes from, how it's misunderstood, how to address it and more. A child's early struggles with math are not always just academic but are also emotional and potentially even life-changing. Dr. Nagrath draws from his rich background in math, computer science, and education to help us break down why so many students begin falling behind in math as early as kindergarten and how early delays often snowball into years of lost confidence, missed opportunities, and career shifts away from math-intensive fields. This isn't just about numbers or curriculum, however. As Dr. Nagrath explains, math anxiety is often rooted in beliefs such as “I'm not a math person” - beliefs that can trigger lifelong avoidance and reinforce themselves with every uncomfortable encounter with numbers. This is truly a vicious circle that hinders growth and learning well into adulthood. The conversation challenges the common misconception that disliking math is harmless. How early numeracy can actually influence language development, how adult comments can unconsciously pass limiting beliefs to children, and why literacy-focused initiatives may be unintentionally crowding out math readiness. Dr. Nagrath also tells us about Elephant Learning, a tech-based platform that adapts to each student's comprehension level and uses gamified learning to rebuild mathematical confidence from the ground up. This episode serves as a reminder that math isn't just a subject but a gateway and that what we do (or, for that matter, don't do) in the earliest years can shape far more than just test scores. Show Notes: [2:22] - Dr. Aditya Nagrath explains how working with Elephant Learning revealed that minor complaints often mask deeper math anxiety. [5:05] - The belief that "I'm not a math person" stalls effort and future academic/career opportunities. [7:09] - Similar to AI training, learning depends on the meanings that we assign to experiences and challenges. [9:53] - Hear how Dr. Nagrath defines mathematics anxiety. [12:11] - Dr. Nagrath argues that many students' unresolved early math gaps snowball, derailing STEM careers and impacting the economy. [15:48] - Dr. Nagrath also asserts that Algebra is essential because it introduces written mathematics that are needed for interpreting the modern world. [17:40] - Hear how preschool math practice improves children's future reading, writing, and speaking abilities. [19:41] - Dr. Nagrath uses a basketball analogy to demonstrate that practicing math is essential because no alternative "game" exists. [21:46] - Dr. Nagrath explains that Elephant Learning builds math skills by meeting students at their comprehension level with gamified learning. [24:01] - By mapping standards to age levels, Elephant Learning helps students visualize progress. [27:18] - Because of deeply rooted self-doubt, overcoming math anxiety later in life tends to be more difficult. [28:44] - Dr. Nagrath stresses that problem-solving, like basketball, improves with practice rather than innate intelligence. [31:00] - Modern demands require deeper, language-like mathematical understanding.

Have you been relying on endless algebra flowcharts to nowhere? Are your students relying on tricks and shortcuts instead of truly understanding math? Are they seeing math as a set of disconnected procedures to apply and success comes when you figure out which procedure applies given a set of inputs? Whether you teach elementary or high school, the tension between teaching for deep understanding and preparing students to "just get the answer" is real. In this episode, veteran math educator Maryann Greenholt shares her candid journey of grappling with how to move beyond procedural teaching—especially in the context of factoring—and what it really takes to help students understand the why behind the math. You'll learn:Why students at all levels often cling to memorized steps—and how to shift that mindsetHow using visual and concrete models can deepen understanding, from basic operations to polynomialsWhat it looks like to create a calm, concept-first math classroom that builds confidence and curiosityIf you're ready to move beyond surface-level math instruction and foster real meaning for your students, press play now and walk away with insights you can use at any grade. Not sure what matters most when designing math improvement plans? If you want an ad-free experience, you can subscribe below underneath the show description. This episode follows up on a recent analysis of the idea that western civilization, or all civilization, was only possible because of Christianity. Expanding on this theme we will explore not merely "civilization," but the idea of morality as enshrined in social and legal systems, far predating the Ten Commandments. The previous show summary is provided here: There is an idea circulating online that only white, christian, western civilization delivered morality, cleanliness, safety, and intelligence to the world, along with the most beautiful women, cars, houses, etc., all the latter things of which are obviously subjective. This all sounds good to people who are told every day that they are racists and bigots. But before one could even consider such a thing seriously, they would first need to define terms like “white,” “christian,” and “western.” Much of this sentiment is rooted in the United States, which finds itself ranked out of the top ten for life expectancy, infant mortality, and overall healthcare, with a poor 79% literacy rate of which 54% are barely educated to a 6th grand level, and with an average IQ of 98. The U.S. is also increasingly famous for its crime and filth. Many things contribute to such low markers, including education, chemicals, and cultural priorities. Such markers change over time, too, though its seems much of the unspecific western world, i.e., the U.S., lives in the shadow of past greatness. The point is: white-christian-western ideas are not faulty, but not the end-all of civilization. From Iran to Russia, South Korea, Japan and Singapore, among many others, there are substantially higher IQ scores, with Japan leading at 106.58 for an average. There is also better healthcare quality and cost, with Japan leading in life expectancy and infant mortality. Outside Singapore, which has only a 19% Christian population, or South Korea with a 31% Christian population, Japan has only a 1.5% Christian population yet is considered the overall safest, cleanest, kindest, healthiest, highest IQ country in the world. By all accounts and the definition of “civilization,” these previous countries are more civilized than the United States. The meaning here is that white christianity is not needed to produce such a society. In fact, historically, many things now considered western or American are anything but that…. Gunpowder, ketchup, and paper came from China, rubber came from Mesoamerica, the wheel from Mesopotamia, Zero was derived by the Indians, and after the collapse of the western Roman Empire it was the Islamic Golden Age that kept, translated, and expanded upon medicine, philosophy, engineering, astronomy, and math (the Arabs giving us Algebra), ultimately preserving it for the later European Renaissance. By all measures “civilization” is a combination of humanity in both times of peace and war, with none holding the title for best. If the western world is largely based on Greek philosophy which merged with Roman philosophy, itself the first major superpower, then Christianity cannot be the foundation of the former because it was only adopted in the 4th-century during the final years of the western Roman Empire.-FREE ARCHIVE (w. ads)SUBSCRIPTION ARCHIVEX / TWITTER FACEBOOKMAIN WEBSITECashApp: $rdgable EMAIL: rdgable@yahoo.com / TSTRadio@protonmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/tst-radio--5328407/support.

The Ruckus Report Quick take: Missouri Superintendent Dr. David Buck shows how real-world learning experiences are transforming education from standardized "assembly lines" into dynamic pathways that prepare students for a future even educators can't predict. Meet Your Fellow Ruckus Maker Dr. David Buck has been an educator for 28 years, serving as a teacher of everything from at-risk to gifted classes and middle school science. He's been involved with the Missouri Leadership Academy since 2006, helping emerging leaders become principals through a year-long development process. As a father of three daughters (one in college, one in high school, and one in middle school), he brings both professional expertise and personal investment to his transformative work in education. Breaking Down the Old Rules
We open with another correction. Yesterday it was the AP, today it is MSNBC. Seems everyone wanted to jump right to “Putin” when DNI Tulsi Gabbard talked about Trump and his relationship with another world leader. The Hill had to admit President Trump has been correct about Ukraine and how it was badly managed by everyone involved. Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) thinks it's funny to mock an American company that builds an American production with American labor. The war on Tesla is a coordinated implementation of domestic terrorism. CNN's Scott Jennings basically says, that's all the Left has are emotional outbursts and violence. We then move to more decisions of radical, activist judges who need to be reined before we really do suffer a full collapse over the rule of law. Congress has the ability to do that if they would get off their lazy butts. Even Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) put out a message to that effect. This also leads to more discussion over the memo of Chief Justice Roberts. Sean Davis, CEO and co-founder of The Federalist shares his frustration with trying to get an actual copy of the whole statement. Elon Musk describes what DOGE is finding and it is tantamount to legalized corruption, especially as it relates to NGO's and non-profits. The activist judges all see to have connections to the money flowing into the hands of family, spouses and/or relatives. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says people are mad because Elon Musk is “moving their cheese.” Musk corrects him and says, “It's not their cheese.” That is the corruption we are seeing in a nutshell. We know the name of the White House Staff Secretary how used the autopen with what appears to have been without Joe Biden's knowledge. Her name is Neera Tanden. The coronated Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, shows us that VP Kamala Harris isn't the only one gifted with nonsensical word salad. It seems incoming students at Harvard are not good at basic Algebra. In fact, they are adding remedial algebra classes. Finally, Trump released a tweet right after talking for an hour with President Zelenskyy about the call he had the previous day with Russia. It seems progress is being made toward a peace deal. Khalid Oluewu, principal of Webster Elementary School in Chicago, has done what many principals would love to do: He has created structures and practices at his school to ACCELERATE learning for all, and in particular for Black males. Wow. The idea started when he was a teacher and taught middle school math and had students come to him years behind. He looped with the students and in three short years he not only got them on grade level, but when they went to high school they were able to skip Algebra and start with Geometry. Now as a principal he put four things in place to accelerate learning - to have students learn one and a half years' worth in just a year): Have teachers focus on PRIORITY standards Have teachers provide JUST-IN-TIME supports not live in remediation Provide more individualized learning by having teachers use small groups and by partnering with organizations who could provide high-impact tutoring Using tech platforms for more individualized learning The results? In one year the overall proficiency level leaped from just 6% to 50% and for Black boys, it went from just 2% to 30%! Truly impressive. And those numbers keep climbing up, far from the single-digit proficiency levels they were before. John is joined by Scott Galloway to discuss the impending Tech Bro tableau at Donald Trump's inauguration and Joe Biden's warning about America's incipient transformation into an oligarchy. Galloway—professor at NYU's Stern School of Business, host of the Pivot and Prof G podcasts, and author of The Algebra of Wealth, The Algebra of Happiness, and The Four: The Hidden DNA of Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google—argues that the U.S. isn't just turning into an oligarchy but a kleptocracy as well; that Mark Zuckerberg's rollback of content moderation and other safeguards on Facebook will be far more socially damaging than what Elon Musk has done to X; and that Musk is all but guaranteed to crush Steve Bannon in the escalating battle between the two men and the political factions they represent. Scott and John also wax lyrical about the joys of Great Dane parenthood and the brilliance of David Lynch (RIP). From wealth transfer myths to smart career moves, NYU Professor Scott Galloway reveals how to build real financial security in today's economic landscape. What We Discuss with Scott Galloway: The wealth transfer from Baby Boomers to younger generations ($18 trillion) is highly uneven and won't solve economic inequality. Many people will inherit nothing or even have to support their aging parents, while a small number will receive substantial inheritances, further widening the wealth gap. "Follow your passion" is dangerous career advice, typically given by people who are already wealthy. Instead, focus on finding something you're good at that can provide economic security — mastery and success will lead to passion naturally. Job-hopping every two or three years often leads to higher earnings, as companies tend to undervalue existing employees and overvalue new hires. However, switching jobs too frequently (multiple times per year) can make you appear unreliable. Economic security isn't about being rich — it's about having enough resources to remove financial stress from relationships and enable focus on what truly matters. In the US specifically, this often requires being in the top 10-20 percent due to healthcare and education costs. You can dramatically improve your financial future through consistent, practical steps: save regularly, understand compound interest, diversify investments, live below your means, and start early. While it may seem slow at first, these fundamentals reliably build wealth over time and anyone can learn to implement them. And much more... We are honored to be joined by professor and bestselling author Scott Galloway to talk about the current state of men, women, mating, and dating. We discuss the inequality of dating apps (and which gender they are worse for), why people don't “meet at work” like they used to, and where people can actually meet potential partners and fall in love. He educates us on the problem with men and boys in our country today and his thoughts on fixing the issues, and how men and women operate differently when they're single. We also break down the three things women find most attractive in men and discuss the question “Are men intimidated by successful women?” And we chat about women in business, female founders, and how the landscape has improved (but it's still not equal). Before Scott joins us, we are breaking down a recent survey of the most and least attractive male hobbies and debuting our most versatile vibrator yet. Enjoy!
