Swaney talks with host Greg Swatek about his long career as a wrestling coach in Frederick County that has almost spanned almost two decades. He discusses taking over the head coaching job at Linganore this season from longtime friend and colleague Ben Arneson and some of the challenges the Lancers have faced as they go after another state title. He also talks about how the sport has changed over the years and the need to evolve with the times and adapt to what's happening now. And he talks about his beloved Washington Commanders and Capitals having terrific seasons and being squarely in a championship chase. Prior to that conversation, FNP sports writer Alexander Dacy joins Greg to discuss a Frederick County girls flag football commitment at Mount St. Mary's, a profile he is working on about longtime Tuscarora coach Mike O'Brien and the local high school basketball scene.

Members of the Tuscarora Nation of North Carolina recently visited the state legislature to push for a House bill that would grant them formal state recognition as an American Indian tribe. They've been fighting for the benefits provided to other tribes for decades, and the history of conflict stretches back centuries to the 1700s war between Tuscarora ancestors and British colonists. House Speaker Tim Moore says the recognition bill is unlikely to move forward, in part due to opposition from the Lumbee Tribe, the Tuscarora Nation's neighbors in Robeson County. To learn more about the Tuscarora Indians and their push for state recognition, WUNC's Colin Campbell spoke with Rahnàwakęw Donnie McDowell, the Tuscaroras' public relations officer.
As he heads down the final straightaway of his standout track and field career at Catoctin High School, senior Furious Trammel is this week's guest on The Final Score podcast. Trammel chats with host Greg Swatek about the origins of his unique first name and how people generally react to it. He also talks about the unlikely path that led him to track and field and how he became one of the top athletes in his events (the 400-meter dash, the long jump and the triple jump) in the state of Maryland. How did he react to winning his first state title? What is his most memorable race? What would he like to accomplish before the end of the season? What are his ultimate goals in the sport? Trammel answers all of these questions and more during this week's episode. Prior to that conversation, FNP sports writer Alexander Dacy joins Greg to discuss Avery Neuman's incredible stat line for Tuscarora softball, Urbana's powerhouse boys lacrosse team, Trey Lipscomb getting sent back down to Triple-A by the Washington Nationals and other spring sports happenings around Frederick County.
This week we're taking you to Niagara Falls for the second installment of our occasional series Unmapped. Rosanna is unmapping Niagara Falls, aka Onguiaahra – from the Haudenosaunee contributions to the War of 1812 to the Tuscarora women keeping their culture and traditions alive through beading, there is much more to know beyond the iconic waterfall.
With the state wrestling championships on tap this weekend in Upper Marlboro, Tuscarora High wrestling coach Trey Coates, one of the biggest advocates for the sport in Frederick County, is this week's guest on The Final Score podcast. Coates chats with host Greg Swatek about the tremendous season the Titans have had, advancing all the way to the Class 3A West regional duals final, during which they gave eventual state champion Linganore a tussle, and then sending a large contingent of wrestlers to the individual state championships this weekend. Coates also discusses in detail how he was able to get a flourishing girls wrestling program going at Tuscarora. The Titans had roughly 18 girls come out for the wrestling team this season, which was easily the most of any school in Frederick County, and will send seven wrestlers to the state girls wrestling tournament this weekend at The Show Place Arena. How was he able to get so many girls interested in wrestling? Was he surprised by the turnout? What were the challenges associated with coaching girls as a male wrestling coach? What does he feel is the future of girls wrestling in Frederick County now that there are county titles awarded to girls? Prior to that discussion, FNP sports writers John Cannon and Alexander Dacy join Greg to discuss the basketball playoffs in Frederick County, as well as Oakdale's run to the Maryland state final in ice hockey.
In episode 2, we are joined by Shodzi'dzo:wa:' Damian Webster and Montgomery Hill who do amazing work in the Seneca and Tuscarora languages. We talk about their languages, communities, and work, and then give perspectives on what it takes to create speakers, and then talk about what it takes to keep going and not quit while doing this type of work. Keep on going, keep on believing, keep being the dream of your ancestors.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
With his team off to a hot start this season, Middletown High boys basketball coach John Keimig is this week's guest on The Final Score podcast, the first of 2024. The Knights are 9-0 after a 40-point road win over Clear Spring earlier this week. They also have road wins over typically formidable county rivals Tuscarora and Walkersville. Keimig explains to host Greg Swatek why the team is playing so well and what sort of potential it has as the season goes on. He talks about how his passion for coaching started and has evolved and what it was like for him to take over the boys basketball program at a school he went to and played for. Keimig also talks about why basketball has always been such an important part of his life and what his life might look like if he wasn't coaching the sport right now. Prior to that discussion, FNP sports writer Alexander Dacy and John Cannon join Greg to discuss the high school basketball landscape in Frederick County and other winter sports.

“T” is for Tuscarora War (1711-1713). In the first decade of the eighteenth century the Tuscaroras, an Iroquoian tribe, inhabited eastern North Carolina in fifteen towns with 1,200 warriors and a population of about 4,800 people.
Throughout this season we've featured parks on an individual basis. My thinking has been that every park should have its own episode, letting each park shine on its own. But what if there are parks that are so connected to one another that they shouldn't be separated? That brings us to Tuscarora and Locust Lake State Parks. They are both managed by the same park manager. They are both supported by the same volunteer group. And, they're located in the same county, less than 10 miles apart. To speak about Tuscarora State Park is to speak about Locust Lake State Park. And vice versa. So, I figured, we should feature them both in the same episode while giving them their own individual sections. On this episode, I speak with Jennifer Holman. Jennifer is with the Friends of Tuscarora and Locust Lake State Parks. Be sure to visit my website to get to notified about upcoming episodes. Also, follow us on Instagram and on Facebook for more information about what is coming up next. With his team riding a two-game winning streak and playing some of its best football of the season, St. John's Catholic Prep football coach Nate Marr is this week's guest on The Final Score podcast. Now in his second season on the job, Marr chats with host Greg Swatek about the challenges of coaching at a small private school in a football-rich area like Frederick County. He talks about how it compares to his previous jobs as a college coach since he has to recruit and the expectations he has for his players once they come into his program. Marr also talks about the Vikings current season and why they seem to be playing so well at the moment, as well as the record setting performance by his senior running back, Zion Ntemi, in last week's 34-0 win at Annapolis Christian. Prior to that conversation, FNP sports writers Alexander Dacy and John Cannon join Greg to review the week that was in Frederick County sports, as they always do. What happened in Week 7 of the high school football season? What is on tap for Week 8? Who will be playing in this weekend's Central Maryland Conference championship games at Tuscarora and Smithsburg high schools. The guys fill you in on all of that.

Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Wednesday, Sept. 6 TEASER (also use for daily recorded teaser for 10am social) West Virginia state park restaurants get a big boost from the Vagabond Chef ... a summer activity at Seneca Rocks has visitors looking down instead of up ... and Form Energy's $760 million battery plant looks to revitalize the Northern Panhandle ... on today's Daily304. #1 – From WV EXPLORER – Restaurants at state parks across West Virginia will begin sourcing local ingredients and refreshing their menus with native flair, thanks to the enlistment of a groundbreaking chef known for his exploration of native cuisine. Known widely as the “Vagabond Chef” and frequently seen on a motorcycle as he travels the state in search of native-food experiences, Matt Welsch has been enlisted to re-imagine the menus at West Virginia parks. Welsch's passion for culinary artistry and commitment to West Virginia's rich flavors have made him a prominent figure in the industry. Born and raised in Marshall County, he developed wanderlust early, leading him to travel globally. In 2014, he returned to his native West Virginia to found the Vagabond Kitchen, his Wheeling-based restaurant. “Chef Matt's unparalleled talent and engaging personality align perfectly with our vision to elevate the dining experiences in our state parks," Deputy-Chief of Parks Paul Redford.said. “I believe his contributions will undoubtedly add an extra sparkle to our restaurants.” Read more: https://wvexplorer.com/2023/08/30/west-virginia-state-park-restaurants-matt-welsch-vagabond-chef/ #2 – From GAZETTE-MAIL – With blade-like Tuscarora sandstone cliffs jutting 900 feet into the Pendleton County sky, the Monongahela National Forest's Seneca Rocks has long prompted visitors to look up while spending time at the iconic West Virginia landmark. But this summer, the U.S. Forest Service has given visitors a good reason to look down — and become fully immersed in the experience. Seneca Rocks Discovery Center has been hosting free snorkeling sessions in the North Fork of the Potomac River's South Branch, which flows past the base of the site's namesake. The program is designed to help participants get a more in-depth understanding of the importance of clean water and healthy streams as they get close-up views of fish, crawfish, and other forms of aquatic life. Mary Ann Nash and her sister Janet Donnelly said they wanted to try it out after having been snorkeling on their Alaskan cruise. “We saw more fish here and we loved seeing how the rock formation looked underwater,” Nash said. Singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie has announced that she's retiring from live performances. For 60 years Buffy's music has quietly reverberated throughout pop culture and provided a touchstone for Indigenous resistance. This five-part series, hosted by Mohawk and Tuscarora writer Falen Johnson explores how Buffy's life and legacy is essential to understanding Indigenous resilience. In this episode, Buffy is traveling from gig to gig in the 60s, armed with her guitar and little else. She makes a splash on the coffeehouse folk scene, rubbing shoulders with artists like Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan. Tectonic changes are around the corner, and her rising success comes with some hard lessons about who to trust — and what it means to be a Indigenous woman in the music business.
