TCW Podcast Episode 223 - D&D & Video Games 2E   In the second part of our exploration of Dungeons & Dragons and its connection to video games, we examine the game's refinement and rise in popularity. D&D was a groundbreaking experience, brought to life through Gary Gygax's collaboration with others, particularly Dave Arneson, who developed many of its foundational concepts. The game evolved from miniature wargaming focused on medieval combat, with Tolkien-inspired high fantasy elements added later as an afterthought. These fantasy rules closely resembled those of Rules for Middle Earth but weren't universally embraced, as some players preferred the realism of traditional wargaming, making it challenging to satisfy both audiences. We also delve into the well-known controversy between Gygax and Arneson and the creation of the Blackmoor campaign setting. We explore how TSR released the original box set and then evolved it into AD&D. Additionally, we examine how RPGs began to take off as a whole new type of game that people could play. Finally, we look at how D&D became embroiled in the cultural backlash of the 1980s "Satanic Panic."   Transcript: https://www.theycreateworlds.com/transcripts/tcw223   Livestream 2024 Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahP86-2H8lc   Playing at the World - Jon Peterson (Affiliate Link): https://amzn.to/3YokLZC The Elusive Shift - Jon Peterson (Affiliate Link): https://amzn.to/3C8cHVq Game Wizards - Jon Peterson (Affiliate Link): https://amzn.to/48uCtzi   Leonard Nimoy The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins Full Album Version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuQbus0xfhk Playing at the World - Rules for Middle Earth: https://playingattheworld.blogspot.com/2016/01/a-precursor-to-chainmail-fantasy.html Knights of the Dinner Table: https://kenzerco.com/ Bunnies & Burrows: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bunnies_%26_Burrows Tunnels & Trolls: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tunnels_%26_Trolls James Dallas Egbert III: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Dallas_Egbert_III Chief Wiggum - It Almost Looks Like an Arrow: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gb5k0iOBdsU Bake him away Toys!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBOvfN2Y4oo Mazes & Monsters Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLi422rkUIY NYT  - D&D: Satanic Panic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATUpSPj0x-c D&D Cartoon Lore Explored: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9lZxOMMufM Matel D&D Handheld Game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uY2OI7sVHjQ Matel D&D Electronic Labyrinth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STU1I_x0-so Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (Intellivision): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MDVwAXVJ3w [Adult Themes] Dark Dungeons Comic: https://www.chick.com/products/tract?stk=0046 [Some Adult Themes] CBS - What was the Satanic Panic?: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plEImKEIRm8 (BADD) Bothered About Dungeons & Dragons: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7Ies6NVAeA   New episodes are on the 1st and 15th of every month!   TCW Email: feedback@theycreateworlds.com  Twitter: @tcwpodcast Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theycreateworlds Alex's Video Game History Blog: http://videogamehistorian.wordpress.com Alex's book, published Dec 2019, is available at CRC Press and at major on-line retailers: http://bit.ly/TCWBOOK1     Intro Music: Josh Woodward - Airplane Mode -  Music - "Airplane Mode" by Josh Woodward. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Utilitarianism and the replaceability of desires and attachments, published by MichaelStJules on July 28, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Summary 1. Consider a pill that would cause a happy person with a fulfilling life to abandon their most important desires and cherished attachments, including goals, career and loved ones, but increase their lifetime subjective well-being. If what's best for someone is just higher subjective well-being (including even higher lifetime preference/desire satisfaction), then it would be better for them to take the pill. However, it seems to me that if they prefer not to take such a pill, to honour their current specific desires and attachments, it could be worse for them to take it (more). 2. I anticipate some responses and reply to them: 1. People aren't always right about what's best for themselves. R: That's true, but attitude manipulation is quite different from other cases, where individuals neglect, discount or otherwise misweigh attitudes they do or will have (more). 2. Deontological constraints against involuntary manipulation. R: Deontological constraints could oddly recommend not to do what's better for someone on their behalf (more). 3. Indirect reasons count against involuntary attitude manipulation. R: Probably, but I also think it wouldn't be better for them in many cases where it would increase their well-being (more). 4. We can't compare someone's welfare between such different attitudes. R: We wouldn't then have reason either way about manipulation, or to prevent manipulation (more). 5. The thought experiment is too removed from reality. R: In fact, reprogramming artificial minds seems reasonably likely to be possible in the future, and regardless, if this manipulation would be worse for someone, views consistent with this could have important implications for cause prioritization (more). 3. This kind of attitude manipulation would be worse for someone on preference-affecting views, which are in favor of making preferences (or attitudes) satisfied, but neutral about making satisfied preferences (for their own sake). Such views are also person-affecting, and so neutral about making happy people or ensuring they come to exist (for their own sake). I expect such views to give relatively less priority to extinction risk reduction within the community (more). Acknowledgements Thanks to Lukas Gloor and Chi Nguyen for helpful feedback. Thanks to Teo Ajantaival, Magnus Vinding, Anthony DiGiovanni and Eleos Arete Citrini for helpful feedback on earlier related drafts. All errors are my own. Manipulating desires and abandoning attachments Let's start with a thought experiment. Arneson (2006, pdf) wrote the following, although I substitute my own text in italics and square brackets to modify it slightly: Suppose I am married to Sam, committed to particular family and friends, dedicated to philosophy and mountain biking, and I am then offered a pill that will immediately and costlessly change my tastes, so that my former desires disappear, and I desire only [to know more about the world, so I will obsessively and happily consume scientific material, abandoning my spouse, my friends and family, my career as a philosopher and mountain biking, and instead live modestly off of savings or work that allows me to spend most of me time reading]. I am assured that taking the pill will increase my lifetime level of [subjective well-being]. Assume further that Arneson loves Sam, his family and friends, philosophy and mountain biking, and would have continued to do so without the pill. He would have had a very satisfying, subjectively meaningful, personally fulfilling, pleasurable and happy life, with high levels of overall desire/preference satisfaction, even if he doesn't take the pill. On all of these measures of subjective well-bein...

Steve is very intentional with the value he gives in this episode. Discussions during this roll-by-roll episode of the Dungeons & Dragons game include the suitability of fantasy as a genre conducive to the table-top role-playing game format; the influence of Gygax and Arneson's fame upon the 1980s resurgence of fantasy cinema; Dungeons and Dragons as an enduring transmedia property and the possibilities of world-building; and how ‘metagaming' in Dungeons and Dragons offers a way to think about the player's complex relationship to character and embodiment. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo** **As featured on Feedspot's 25 Best London Education Podcasts**

Establishing clear boundaries allows you to let go of unproductive habits and pave the way for new ones that align with your goals. If you've wanted to “do better” or create high performance habits, this episode is for you. In this episode of The Real Estate Mindset Podcast, I chat with Steve Arneson about the importance of self-reflection as the first step to building high-performance habits. Steve discusses the power of introspection in understanding your current behaviors and identifying how to create new ones. After Linganore wrestling won the state title in the Class 3A duals for the second consecutive year last Saturday in Waldorf, coach Ben Arneson and junior standout Brennan Considine are this week's guests on The Final Score podcast. Arneson and Considine chat with host Greg Swatek about the 34-31 victory over South River in the 3A championship match and all the moments that made it momentous. South River had won the 4A duals title the previous two seasons before dropping down to 3A this season. So, Linganore was facing a formidable challenge. The conversation also addresses the workmanlike nature of this Linganore team, the pivot to the individual portion of the wrestling season and the upcoming Frederick County tournament this weekend, which will feature a girls tournament for the first time. What can we expect over these next two weeks of wrestling leading into states? Prior to that discussion, FNP sports writers Alexander Dacy and John Cannon join Greg to review last weekend's county swimming championships and some notable results on the Frederick County basketball scene over the last week.

Episode 178 Streamed Live Tuesday February 13, 2024 Main Topic: Who is the true Dungeon Master…Gary or Dave? A review of two documentaries: 1.) Secrets of Blackmoor: A Tue History of Dungeons & Dragons https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9301886/plotsummary/?ref_=tt_ov_pl 2.) The Dreams in Gary's Basement https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10621206/ Both movies painted their respective subjects in a good light Blackmoor for Mr Arneson's part and Dreams for Mr Gygax. However neither treated the other's subject in a bad light, letting the ages old schism remain in the past. Both mostly focused on the positive contributions each paid to our hobby. Secrets of Blackmoor went into great detail about how the tabletop RPG hobby sprung from war gaming, largely though Dave Arneson's efforts. Dreams focused on Gary Gygax's similar journey detailing the rise and fall of TSR and its eventual purchase by Wizards of The Coast. In light of these two documentaries, it seems the hobby owes it existence to both of these visionaries, though it is uncertain as to who gets top billing. At this point it hardly matters. Modules or Roll Your own? Modules/Pre-packaged Adventures Advantages: all encounters and stats done for you, plot ready to go, read-n-run (???), nice maps & visuals, and can dovetail with your own ideas(can even steal them from modules) and they can be fun to read. Disadvantages: may not fit your group, too railroad-y, costly($?), may need to shoe horn the current campaign/party situation into the adventure( Slavers series??/), politicization of games could creep in and long adventure paths/modules can be a lot to read and prepare even though it is all laid out for you. Rolling Your Own Advantages: easier to prep(theoretically), can react on the fly w/o worry of “messing” up the adventure, do not have to spend time reading, allows you infinite freedom and you can tailor it to your group from the start. Disadvantages: must make your own maps & prep time/write stats( ?), may need to use monster books/charts/random tables and “wing'in it” can result in non-sensical situations ( “ an aboleth, that doesn't make any sense!”), inspiration can run dry, Big Geek Con 2: get ticket at - https://tabletop.events/conventions/big-geek-con-2024 September 20-22, 2024/$30 for those who are 13+ Parents must be always with their children. Don Onken is 83 years young and has accomplished a lot in his powerboat racing career. But he's not done yet. “Our goal with American Ethanol is to go as fast at the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout in 3/4 mile as we previously did in one mile” Onken said. “People didn't think we'd ever get to 200 mph on the short course, but here we are.”  In 2022, driven by Tony Battiato and throttled by John Cosker, the owner of Mystic Powerboats, Onken's 51 ft. Mystic Catamaran produced a run of 207 mph to capture the LOTO Shootout Top Gun award for the eighth time. The boat was powered by four Vortech Supercharged, 600 cu. in. Big Block Chevys that were built by Earl Moorman at Onken's performance engine shop, Onken Racing. The engines use Big Chief cylinder heads, Holley Dominator engine management systems, Custom Marine headers, and run on E85 ethanol fuel from Renegade Race Fuel. The engines are mounted crank-to-crank, tractor pull style, producing 2250 hp each to spin the number 10 Arneson drives through SCS crash boxes.  In preparation for this year's LOTO assault, Onken planned to outfit the Mystic with four new engines. Built using Mercury Racing Engine blocks and double overhead cam cylinder heads, the 557 cu.in. short stroke engines will use Procharger superchargers to make 2550 hp each. Don felt confident that the extra 1000 hp combined would get them the additional 10 mph they needed to get the boat to 217 mph which would have equaled their one mile best speed. In the episode, Don talks about this very ambitious undertaking. He also discusses how his philanthropic mindset was shaped by his father's volunteerism and discusses making a commitment to donate $100,000 to charity by 2025.  Learn more about Steve's inspiring story as he talks about building a “giving muscle” and how it can have a ripple effect on people's lives; the impact of incorporating a for-purpose aspect into businesses; leveraging other people's time in order to scale up one's business; giving both monetarily and through simple acts like compliments; becoming aware of the option of incorporating for-purpose elements into their business; sponsoring kids sports every month for five years; and creating support for cancer research. Listen to Steve and Randy's story on giving, which will inspire you to go bigger with your dreams and goals so you can give bigger with your profits!  [00:00 - 10:24] Entrepreneurism: Creating a Flexible Lifestyle·        Steve was always fascinated with money and wanted the finer things in life·        He got into sales to make more money but had a change of heart when he realized the toll it would take on his personal life·        Steve had a realization that he needed to change his career path and chose entrepreneurship as a better way to achieve his desired lifestyle·        Steve realized that his current career path in sales would keep him away from his family for a large part of the year·        He did not want to follow that same path and end up like his VP, stressed and not seeing his family·        Steve's desire to spend more time with his family was a key factor in his decision to pursue entrepreneurship. [10:24 - 22:38] Unlocking the Power of Philanthropy·        Randy and Steve joined a Mastermind Thrive Make Money, which taught them about putting together businesses that give back.·        They connected the idea of using their business for a purpose as opposed to just earning money and then giving it away.·        Steve was inspired by the one-for-one model and the idea that the more they make in their business, the more they give back automatically.·        Randy and Steve turned their business into a for-purpose business, which involved a lot of charity events and raising money through their meetups and rental properties. [22:38 - 34:43] Building a Legacy·        Collaborating with like-minded people to have a high impact on the world through their businesses·        People should focus on the impact of their actions rather than the monetary value·        People care more about the impact rather than the amount of money donated·        Describing the impact creates a higher level of buy-in and momentum·        The first step towards a positive legacy is self-awareness·        Self-awareness includes acknowledging one's own selfishness·        Don't just be a seven-figure earner, aim to be seven figures in all aspects of life·        Developing a mindset focused on leaving a positive legacy can change a person over time. [34:43 - 44:46] Quick Questions ·        Brag one about charity you like: FreeWater·        What would get you more excited? Donating a $1 million check or spending a week physically helping others: Steve would be more excited about donating a $1 million check because of the potential impact it could have on a charity and his personal growth.·        Who inspires you with their giving? Steven Bartlett.·        What would be your number one collaborator to partner with? Eminem.·        What is the first thing that you think of when you hear Go Big to Give Big: The more people who embrace this idea and use their passions to drive change, the greater impact they can have on the world.·        In one word, describe the feeling you get when you give: Inspired.·        Do you believe that money can buy you happiness: Money absolutely can buy happiness. For Steve, money has been a witness to how money can make an impact when you help someone.   [44:46 - 49:25] Closing Segment·        Reach out to Steveo  See links below ·        Final words Tweetable Quotes "No matter what the circumstance is, you can jump at the chance to help. For ten years, my friend Steve Arneson has been a real estate investor. His portfolio is concentrated on Victoria and Edmonton. He was a co-founder of The REINVESTORS and hailed from a family of real estate investors. Steve undoubtedly has a lot to contribute, so prepare your notes and pay close attention to what he has to say! In this episode, we cover:How he raised almost 15 million dollars in capital in order to make his  deals happen.Sometimes you gotta start alone, and while its tough, it's what will push you forward to success. That's what happened to Steve. After dealing with everything by himself, he slowly found a team that could aid him and therefore, put him in the lane he was meant to be in all along! Is a sales background important when it comes to raising capital? Although it helps and makes everything all the more easy, according to Steve, it is absolutely not essential.People will do business with the people they like. At the end of the day, real estate is a relationship-heavy business that requires you to truly engage with other people. We all know how important it is to understand security regulations. So much so that Steve has had to refuse jobs and offers to stay in accordance with them!About Steve:Steve Arneson is the Co-Founder of The REINVESTORS. He came from a real estate family. Growing up with his mom mainly, most weekends were spent with her going to open houses.Naturally, he was excited to start his first live-in flip investment in 2012 at the young age of 24. He's on a mission to inspire people to live a more fulfilled life by shifting how they think about real estate, then they can inspire those around them to do the same. He now helps others implement the same strategies he uses in creating passive income, long-term wealth, and financial independence.Connect with Steve:Website: https://thereinvestors.ca/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thereinvestorsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/the_reinvestorsEmail: steve@thereinvestors.ca  Connect with Danielle Chiasson:Website: https://letsgetrealestatepodcast.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/daniellechiasson/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DaniChiassonInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/letsgetrealTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@danichiassonBook in a call: https://calendly.com/strategicsuccess/lets-get-real-estate-20-min-chat Listen in and subscribe for more. You can also leave us a review and of course, don't forget to share.
