Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's the names for the positions that defensive linemen line up in. The Steelers traditionally play in a 3-4 defense, which uses a nose tackle and two defensive ends. Some teams use a 4-3, with two defensive ends and two defensive tackles. But those defensive ends are not the same. In the Steelers' base defense, the ends play directly over or just inside the tackle, while ends in a 4-3 play well outside, sometimes even outside the tight ends. That makes 4-3 defensive ends more similar to Pittsburgh outside linebackers. Instead of vague descriptions like end and tackle, NFL teams have a system to break down each possible defensive line alignment, starting with a zero technique, which is a true nose tackle over the center, and moving outward from there. So when the Steelers are looking at defensive lineman, what do we mean when we saw three-technique or five-technique? Alan breaks it down. Learn more about your ad choices. Notre Dame has been working hard to improve its defensive line recruiting. In recent weeks the Irish have hosted a number of talented DL and this past weekend they landed one of the nation's bust defensive ends. They are on the verge of landing another and the hope is for an elite 2026 haul. If that happens could it begin a strong run at the position? Bryan and Shaun discuss. In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio talking about the first two weeks of USC spring football plus they are joined live by one of the new defensive line transfers that is hoping to take the Trojans defense to another level. Thanks to House of Victory, the 6-foot-5, 349 pound defensive lineman transfer from Georgia Jamaal Jarrett will chat live with the guys, talking about his journey from playing high school ball in North Carolina to enrolling at Georgia and ultimately transferring to USC. Jarrett is a massive human being and his presence alone is helping to transform the defensive line room into a position of strength for this Trojan football squad. The interview with Reed was conducted in conjunction with House of Victory, an alumni-backed nonprofit collective dedicated to providing a competitive edge in the NIL space for University of Southern California student-athletes.
