Welcome to the Line of Scrimmage, offseason edition, where we'll carve out time to dive into the recruiting classes of a select few upcoming Florida State football opponents. To kick things off, we'll revisit Zachary Junda and the LSU faithful from our sister SBNation site, And The Valley Shook. Zach joined us last season prior to Florida State's cardiac arrest-inducing victory over the Tigers. While we touch on the game, we take time to focus on how the 2023 recruiting and transfer classes shaped up for the LSU Tigers. The Tigers finished with sixth overall combined class, according to the composite rankings, managing to add players coveted by top programs from around the country at key positions in the high school ranks while also filling the positions of need in the transfer portal. In this debut episode of the Line of Scrimmage's offseason edition, we take a look at how second-year head coach Brian Kelly and his staff combined the experience of recruiting nationally at Notre Dame with the advantage of being the lone football powerhouse in the state to land one of the top classes in the nation. Some of the questions and topics touched on: Overall grade for Brian Kelly's first year at the helm What can LSU expect from their two top commits from each side of the ball — offensive tackle Zalance Heard and defensive end Dashawn Womack, both 5 stars? Which positional need did Kelly address the best? And what still is a concern? Who are some other players to highlight from the 2023 class? Of the new crowded secondary room, which of these players have the most likely path to starting for LSU? Did the Tigers address the concerns they had in the defensive trenches? What were some of the biggest hits LSU took in portal departures? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
The introductory period of Summer Scouting continues. DP and Keith introduce the very talented wide receivers of the 2024 NFL Draft class. DP had a confident prevailing thought regarding this potential pass catcher group compared to last season's. Is there a legitimate threat to Marvin Harrison Jr's WR1 label and why could it be his own teammate? Keith has an LSU Tiger everyone should be aware of this season. Is Florida State WR Johnny Wilson made to play the position or will he need a change for NFL success? DP and Keith close it out by rattling off names the world should be aware of that are being slept on. Tune in for all of this and more! Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Do the LSU Tigers need additional depth at running back? It is a more difficult question to ask than you might think. On one hand, you might say of course they do. Senior Noah Cain and true freshman Trey Holly were the only available running backs for the spring game in April and you cannot survive an SEC football schedule with just one RB with college experience. On the other hand, however, one might argue that there could potentially be three experienced and proven running backs coming back by the beginning of the season. Josh Williams and Armoni Goodwin both missed spring practice with injuries withstood at the end of the 2022 season while John Emery Jr. works to improve his grades. Overall, what could it hurt to add some more depth? And who would that depth piece be? Enter Notre Dame transfer RB Logan Diggs. Diggs wrapped up his second season with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and recorded 820 rush yards on 165 carries with 4 touchdowns and added 211 yds on 10 receptions and 2 touchdowns through the air. Diggs was recruited by Brian Kelly in high school and is familiar with the coaching staff and the system. Plus, Diggs is a Louisiana native. The Archbishop Rummel graduate has taken visits across the SEC since entering the transfer portal, but it just makes too much sense for Brian Kelly and company to miss out on him. LSU Football exceeded expectations in Brian Kelly's first season by winning nine regular season games, taking down rivals Alabama Crimson Tide, and winning the SEC West for a chance to compete in the SEC Championship. But that was last season, and now it is up to Kelly and the entire LSU Tigers team to not just live up to, but exceed the standard they set for themselves in the 2022 season. ESPN released its post-spring top 25 college football power rankings. The rankings are fairly kind to LSU, however their praise for the program is met with just as much skepticism. They beat Alabama, but what happened in the final regular season game against Texas A&M? Jayden Daniels and Harold Perkins should take a step forward in their second year in Baton Rouge, but will Brian Kelly be faced with growing pains? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! TCU had a historic season, making it to the 2023 College Football Playoff. It seems like 3 of the 4 slots is almost guaranteed to be normal blue blood programs like the Georgia Bulldogs, Alabama Crimson Tide, Ohio State Buckeyes, Michigan Wolverines, Clemson Tigers or another major program. Could Lincoln Riley and the USC Trojans ride the back of Heisman Trophy Winner Caleb Williams into the playoffs? Can Brian Kelly and the LSU Tigers find themselves in the big dance? OR Could Mike Norvell and the Florida State Seminoles return to prominence? Let's discuss. MANSCAPED: 20% OFF with FREE SHIPPING! The New Orleans Saints could trade for and land former NFL Draft daring and LSU Tiger, Patrick Queen. College football has two windows in which players can enter the transfer portal: two weeks in December and two weeks in April. The final day to enter the transfer portal was April 30th and not a single LSU Tiger on scholarship entered their name into the transfer portal, including backup QB Garrett Nussmeier. Why is that so important? What message does that convey about Brian Kelly and the state of the program? How will this impact not just this team and the roster this season, but the roster construction for 2024 and beyond? While it is so important that the Tigers have not lost any depth to the transfer portal, they can still look to add depth via the transfer portal. Coach Kelly said they would look to add depth defensively and on the offensive line, but there is one talented player, not necessarily at a position of need, that the experts are slating to commit to LSU. Finally, LSU baseball completed its second sweep of the season after taking down unranked Alabama Crimson Tide over the weekend. LSU baseball has maintained their #1 ranking all season long, but the series against Alabama may have revealed some roster holes and flaws on this team that can be improved before a potential run for a national championship.
