In this podcast, we talk with Rob Larson about his book, “Mastering the Universe: The Obscene Wealth of the Ruling Class, What They Do with Their Money, and Why You Should Hate Them Even More.” Larson is a professor of economics for the past 18 years and has authored numerous books, including “Bit Tyrants: The Political Economy of Silicon Valley” and “Capitalism vs. Freedom: The Toll Road to Serfdom”. He writes for Jacobin and Dollars & Sense and is the House Economist for Current Affairs magazine.   In this book, Larson delves into the extreme wealth and influence of the ruling class. Si el liberalismo primero convirtió la tierra y el trabajo en mercancía, solo era una cuestión de tiempo que nosotros, los pobres, y nuestro hijos acabasen de la misma forma. Some claim this as a virtue: If I have a particularly strong preference for a good I can cast more dollar ballots to reflect the intensity of my desire … But, there is something wrong when people have vastly different numbers of dollar ballots to cast in market elections. Few would hold up as a paragon of freedom a political election in which some were permitted to vote thousands of times and others were permitted to vote only once, or not at all. On this edition of Parallax Views, Silicon Valley is often hailed as pushing the world towards a better, more prosperous future through a model creative destruction and brave technological innovation. Economics professor Rob Larson, however, offers a competing viewpoint to this rose-colored narrative of darlings of the tech world like Microsoft, Apple, and Google in his new book Bit Tyrants: The Political Economy of Silicon Valley (Haymarket Books, 2020). In many ways picking up where his previous book, Capitalism vs Freedom: The Toll Road to Serfdom (Zero Books, 2018), left off, Rob launches a scathing but thoughtful critique on libertarian-style techno utopianism and reveals the often ignored aspect that the public sector has played in important technological innovations. Additionally, Rob details the less savory elements of the Silicon Valley story and how historically the Silicon Valley's current position of power and the effect it has on society bears a resemblance to the Gilded Age. Rob joins us to give an overview of this fascinating new book and fills us in on how it connects to his previous book Capitalism vs Freedom: The Toll Road to Serfdom in the course of this fascinating conversation.   I'm still sad his book got stolen from me.  "Capitalism vs. Freedom: The Toll Road to Serfdom" is the perfect response for your libertarian friends or your anarcho capitalist homies that believe that the problem in the system is NOT THE SYSTEM ITSELF, but the government. Freer markets and less federal oversight will bring forth more innovation, and more freedom.  I like, professor Larson find that to be maddeningly farcical.    We recorded this episode before the Nov. 3rd election, and we discuss Prop. 22.  A bill created and paid for by for by rideshare companies Uber, Lyft, Doordash, Instacart, and Postmates.  The bill is a response to California Assembly Bill 5 that says that gig workers for these companies are not "contractors" but actually should be viewed as employees who deserve worker protections.  Tech giants Uber, Lyft, Doordash, Instacart, and Postmates are claiming that if they have to a minimum wage, paid sick leave, and workers compensation, all benefits awarded to workers in the state, then they will be forced into bankruptcy.  It says a lot about a company and the system in which we live where when you are faced with the fact that you have to make some BARE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS to your employees, the people that are the driving force behind your business, you threaten to leave.     Never underestimate the exploitative nature of capitalism.  Not "crony capitalism", but CAPITALISM.   Read about Prop 22 and AB 5 here: https://www.epi.org/publication/how-californias-ab5-protects-workers-from-misclassification/   Follow Professor Larson on Twitter: @IronicProfessor   Read Professor Larson in Current Affairs: https://www.currentaffairs.org/2020/09/the-tuttle-twins-and-the-case-of-the-really-bad-libertarian-propaganda   Read Rob Larson in Jacobin: https://www.jacobinmag.com/2020/04/bill-gates-foundation-philanthropy-microsoft   Buy Capitalism vs. Freedom: The Toll Road to Serfdom: https://www.johnhuntpublishing.com/zer0-books/our-books/capitalism-freedom   Buy Professor Larson's latest book, Bit Tyrants: https://www.haymarketbooks.org/books/1381-bit-tyrants   Thank you again for taking the time to check this out.  If you enjoy this show, then please think about supporting independent media like this by becoming a patron.  You'll get bonus content from many of the shows, we're creating patron only content, and you get MERCH!    Become a patron now: https://www.patreon.com/BitterLakePresents     Please follow, like, share, and subscribe to the following platforms   YouTube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCG9WtLyoP9QU8sxuIfxk3eg   Facebook https://www.facebook.com/Thisisrevolutionpodcast   Twitch https://www.twitch.tv/thisisrevolutionpodcast   Twitter @TIRShowOakland   Instagram @thisisrevolutionoakland   Medium https://medium.com/@jasonmyles/vengeance-has-no-foresight-837212d85a97

Rob explains why he felt it was important to combat the pernicious influence of right wing economic ideas, and the discourse by which it is spread. Eric and Rob examine the origins of neoliberalism and modern far right economics, and how they were translated into policy, both domestically and internationally. The conversation explores ideas about the nature of freedom, the ruthless efficiency of capitalism and privatization, and the need for dictatorships to carry out right wing Friedmanite economic policies. The second half of the show discusses some contemporary political questions, whether the Trump administration is truly neoliberal, how anarcho-capitalists and neoliberals explain away the glaring holes in their theories, and so much more.
