In this special bonus episode of WSJ's Take On the Week, co-host Telis Demos is joined by social-media content creator and economic commentator Kyla Scanlon, who has helped transform how younger generations, specifically Gen Z, are engaging with news about the economy and finance. Through platforms like TikTok, Instagram and Substack, Scanlon has cultivated a dedicated audience of more than half a million people by simplifying complex economic data with creativity and humor. Recognized for coining the term “vibecession,” to highlight the disconnect between economic data and consumers, Scanlon has garnered attention from White House advisers and the Federal Reserve. In this episode, we'll explore how economic trends like meme stocks (think GameStop and AMC) and cryptocurrencies are changing things for younger investors. Plus, we chat about best practices to consider when using social media for financial advice and how to avoid the “bad actors” that are spreading misinformation or scamming people. This is WSJ's Take On the Week where co-hosts Gunjan Banerji, lead writer for Live Markets, and Telis Demos, Heard on the Street's banking and money columnist, cut through the noise and dive into markets, the economy and finance—the big trades, key players and business news ahead. Have an idea for a future guest or episode? How can we better help you take on the week? We'd love to hear from you. Email the show at takeontheweek@wsj.com. A great idea isn't enough to build a thriving business—execution depends on how well a team works together. Miscommunication, misalignment, and unspoken tension can quietly stall progress, no matter how innovative the product is. The best founders aren't just visionaries; they know how to bring people together, translate ideas into action, and create an environment where momentum doesn't fade. Success often has less to do with the idea itself and more to do with the people making it happen. Dr. Kevin Scanlon has built a diverse career in academic medicine, pharmaceuticals, and biotech. He authored The Hybrid Entrepreneur, a guide to startup success, and has contributed to RNA research while mentoring university startups and investment groups. With a background in teaching entrepreneurship, he brings a deep understanding of business innovation and team dynamics. Today, he explores the challenges of turning scientific breakthroughs into business success. He emphasizes the need for clear communication, adaptable teams, and bridging the language gap between scientists, business leaders, and investors. Stay tuned! In a very unusual one-on-one--make that one-on-two--Harry sits down with Penn law professor Kate Shaw and Pennsylvania congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon to discuss the recent hearing in Congress at which Professor Shaw testified and Congresswoman Scanlon posed questions for the minority. The hearing was a tendentious and contrived set piece directed by Republican Congressman Jim Jordan with the clear goal of supporting the Trump administration's claim that federal judges such as Jeb Boasberg are improperly enjoining administration action. From their respective vantage points Professor Shaw and Congresswoman Scanlon explain the rules of the road about how to counter false claims about the constitution and the role of judges in it. Then with general discussion of ways in which the minority can be effective in the sharply constrained roles that the system forwards them.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

What's considered sustainable from a public health perspective? Not necessarily the same things that we might otherwise uphold. We celebrate the 2025 Earth Day theme of Our Power, Our Planet with architect and integrative environmental specialist Molly Scanlon who shares insights on a new model for architecture practice. Adjacent industries hold the key to practice innovation. Seeing the issues through another point of view moves us past the constraints of business as usual. Advocacy requires having a flexible perspective and taking initiative to build your expertise and avenues of impact Things don't change unless you do. Buildings can become a non-pharmacological intervention in the world of public health as we add additional research related to safety and sustainability. Architects can provide a holistic vs. a traditionally component based understanding common in public health. Today, we're diving into one of the most critical challenges in farming today—profitability. How do you balance the demands of business, the realities of nature, and the need to manage energy and resources sustainably at a time when income sources and profitability itself is undergoing change? To help us explore this, I'm joined by two returning guests who are tackling these questions head-on—farm consultant Chris Clark and physicist Brian Scanlon. Together, they've written a new book, very recently published by 5m books and titled The Profitable Farm: Balancing Business, Nature and Energy through MSO, which stands for Maximum Sustainable Output. And make sure you keep listening to the end of the episode because there is a discount code which will give you 25% off the book and I'll tell you what that code is later. Long standing listeners amongst you may have caught our bonus episode back in June 2023 which was when Brian and Chris were last on the show, and if you did then you'll already have a taste of their thinking. If not, don't worry—we're going to unpack it all right here, but I recommend scrolling back to that episode. Today, we'll be digging into the book itself, discussing what Chris and Brian have been learning and developing since their last appearance on the show, and what MSO might mean for the future of your farm. We're diving into the real reason you're not hitting that next level, and spoiler alert, it's not your marketing plan or your CRM. In this episode, Steve and Joe sit down with nationally renowned coach and speaker Steve Scanlon, founder of Rewire, to explore the real driver behind success in today's market. Forget the usual "just make the calls" advice. Scanlon breaks down why how you think determines what you do, and whether those changes actually stick. From emotional intelligence to the science of how your brain works, he shares practical insight on why top performers in sales, sports, and leadership focus on mindset first and skillset second. You'll hear why learning to deal with discomfort is the key to real growth, and how your thought patterns might be holding you back without you even realizing it. He also digs into the danger of a scarcity mindset and the power of being present and self-aware in high-stress environments. This episode isn't about hype. It's about clarity, strategy, and the kind of self-leadership that can change your business and your life. If you're serious about leveling up, this conversation is your next move. Listen in for a real, relatable, and energizing discussion on what it takes to rewire your results. Key Takeaways Mindset, not skillset, is the key driver of long-term success in real estate and business. Real change requires shifting the way you think before changing what you do. Sustainable growth comes from understanding how the brain works, including neuroplasticity. Embracing discomfort is essential for reaching new goals and breaking old patterns. Scanlon emphasizes the importance of practicing presence in high-pressure situations. Coaching focused on behavior alone often fails without addressing mindset first. Scarcity mindset limits growth, while abundance thinking creates new possibilities. Rewire uses neuroscience and emotional intelligence to help clients create real change. The brain resists change by default, requiring effort and repetition to rewire habits. Realtors often waste energy worrying about things they can't control. Identifying what you can control, influence, or not control is key to managing energy. Success often involves some level of suffering, especially when developing new habits. Short-term motivation fades without a deeper mindset shift to support new behaviors. Rewire's coaching approach is individualized and holistic, focusing on personal clarity. I am John, and I have a passion to empower people to live their best lives. Believing that when we live to our potential, we feel alive and we radiate happiness from the inside out. In a world where being on the go, and meeting others' needs always seems paramount, too often the changes we wish to make for ourselves get left and we accept the status quo, it's important that we meet our own needs and take time for ourselves. I believe that hypnotherapy has the power to change lives, to make our lives better, we just need to want to change. Our Mission We are a healing centre that offers hypnotherapy and meditations to help people relax, and overcome obstacles in their lives When we live life to our potential, we radiate happiness from the inside out. What stops us from living this life, we hold ourselves back due to our beliefs. Too often we think and speak to ourselves in a less than positive way and this limits us. If you wish to change, whether it's losing weight, quit smoking, deal with anxiousness, overcome a fear or phobia, or gain more confidence, hypnotherapy has the power to give you the keys to change to make that change by directly accessing your own subconscious and changing beliefs that may be limiting you to achieve which that you desire. Today I'm grateful to be joined by my very good friend Darren Scanlon, a man who turned his life around and is now living proof of the power of determination and community. Darren opens up about how he faced the harsh reality that if he didn't change his health, drinking habits, and lifestyle, he wouldn't live long enough to see his kids grow up. That realization sparked his journey to transformation. He found inspiration through Andy Ramage's One Year No Beer and joined several hiking groups, where he built strong connections and found his tribe. These communities were key in helping him stay sober and rebuild his life. Today, Darren is eight years sober and thriving. He even ran the Dublin Marathon in 2024, proving that with the right mindset and support, anything is possible. This episode is about resilience, mental health, personal growth, and the importance of surrounding yourself with people who lift you up. You can follow Darren and his inspiring journey on Instagram at @the_sober_hiker. We're having a conversation with Oliver Scanlon, a fiddler and traditional musician based in Syracuse NY. Originally from Vermont, Oliver learned fiddle from the great Pete Sutherland. He played, performed and recorded extensively with Pete over the last 10 years of Pete's life with Pete's Posse, playing for hundreds of contradances, concerts and festivals for their nine years as a trio, releasing eight recording projects along the way! Oliver's current dance band is Stove Dragon and he does professional sound and teaches lessons on fiddle and mandolin.Oliver and I talked about Pete Sutherland a great deal in this conversation as we discussed Oliver's path from learning the fiddle and immediately connecting to folk and traditional music—though perhaps not for the reason you might think—to how he ended up touring the country just out of high school. He talks about lessons he learned along the way and some interesting takes on the different styles he plays. Oliver is a fiddler who does sound and gives us his personal take and recommendation for specific microphones and pickups to use or avoid! After many of my interviews we have trouble ending the chat—Oliver and I kept on talking about teaching after I'd officially wrapped things up so I stuck that bit on the end of the episode.Oliver's websitePete's PosseReach me at meganbeller@fiddlestudio.com.Bandcamp YouTube Fiddle Studio books My website for learning to fiddle is Fiddle Studio which has courses and a mailing list and my Top 10 Fiddle Tunes!
