Meet Curtis Ashby, a cool artist who paints big murals and loves bird art. Curtis talks about how mural art is big in Washington and how it brings people together. Curtis explains that murals last a long time, like 10 to 20 years, which shows how strong this art is in Washington. He also talks about working with cities and groups like Spaceworks. This helps artists and business people team up and make their towns more colorful and fun. He shares how he plans his art projects at the start of the year. It's neat to learn how much thought goes into making these big, beautiful murals. Curtis also likes it when his clients give him some ideas for the mural, but he adds his own touch to it. This mix makes each mural special and tells a story. Curtis really loves birds and nature. He puts this love into his art as a way to remember his grandma. This makes his murals even more special and meaningful. Curtis talks about a big project he did near Tacoma Community College. It was tough to get it all set up, but he worked with the community and made it happen. Curtis likes to paint with friends and help other artists. This shows how artists help each other and make their community better. He also talks about the tools and skills he uses to make his murals just right. The podcast shows how Curtis' art is more than just painting walls. It's about stories, working together, and making places beautiful. You'll want to hear more about how Curtis and other artists are making Washington an awesome place full of art! Connect With Curtis

A friend encouraged Jeffrey Bantay to come to a meeting of the Tacoma Community College student veteran's club. There Bantay met Thomas Di Giorgio. The two developed a bond. They regularly met at the small space reserved for the veteran's club. The space consisted of some chairs, a table and a communal microwave. Here Bantay and Di Giorgio got to talking about their experience in the military and the difficult transition to civilian life. In this episode, the two men talk about their friendship and how it helped them get through some challenging times. They also talk about their decision to join the military and what it meant to have a space at TCC and UW Tacoma for student veterans.
This episode is a conversation with R-Jay Barsh. I found this to be a conversation filled with generous silence. Coach Barsh explores his journey of listening to his own heart and own mind through silence and challenge, to ground and center in his gifts rather than chasing the perceptions of others. Along the way he highlights the power of feedback loops, laying your arrogance down, and empathetic listening.R-Jay Barsh is an Assistant Men's Basketball Coach at Boise State University. Coach Barsh has been an assistant coach for the Broncos for 2 seasons, and Boise State is coming off a 19-win season with an appearance in the NIT. Prior to Boise State, Coach Barsh previously served as the head coach at Southeastern University in Lakeland, Florida. While with SEU, Coach Barsh led the Fire to three NAIA Division II National Tournament appearances, including an NAIA Fab Four run. This podcast centers around a 41-year-old blind black-man in Tacoma Washington named Amin Hester. Amin studies and works at Tacoma Community College. This case study explores the cognitive dissonance in educational and social settings using Critical Social and race theory, along with Marxist theory of oppression and seclusion. The objective of this podcast is to enlighten the majority population of Tacoma Washington including faculty and students, to prevent cognitive dissonance, discrimination, and isolation of visually impaired students. The study also brings light at the obstacles a man of color with disability has compared to a person experiencing disability without any racial barriers. The main objective is to see education and career obstacles through the eyes of Amin Hester, and educational and creative expression leading to success despite our views of disability.
Join us for a conversation between Nicole Aschoff and Rob Larson on how Big Tech and its philosopher kings are profiting off the coronavirus crisis, why that should make you angry, and what we can do about it. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- With the necessity of social distancing forcing more and more of our lives to be lived through our screens, technology has begun seeping even deeper into the crevices of our social fabric. With everything from elementary school classes to routine doctor's visits being mediated by various apps, smart phones, and computers, Silicon Valley is poised to be more profitable—and more powerful as a political force—than ever before. Tales of Amazon's record profits, and Bill Gates's boundless generosity are presented by the media as the silver-linings we can all believe in amidst the endless torrent of pandemic related bad news. And yet signs of the tech related scandals-to-come are already all around us—Elon Musk's move to re-open his smart-car factories and stories of Zoom's predatory data hoovering practices being just two among many. Join authors, activists, and radicals Rob Larson and Nicole Aschoff as they discuss why we should resist swallowing the tech industry's puff, spin, and outright lies, and whether we use their own platforms against them to build digital socialism. Rob Larson is a professor of economics at Tacoma Community College and author of Bit Tyrants: The Political Economy of Silicon Valley, and Capitalism vs. Freedom. He writes for Jacobin, In These Times, Current Affairs and Dollars & Sense. Nicole Aschoff is a writer, editor, and sociologist. Disruption, innovation, entrepreneurial spirit – Silicon Valley is viewed by many as the cradle of technological development and progress in our world today. But, behind the luster of unlimited growth and unbounded ambition lies Capitalism's standard blend of exploitation and concentration of individual wealth at the expense of public good. ———————————————————— At a time when technology is seeping even deeper into our lives, how can we reclaim it for the many and not the few? Join authors, activists and radicals Rob Larson and Wendy Liu for a discussion on Big Tech's monopolistic power today, and how we can respond to it with a radical vision of digital socialism. Linda's was the final episode for 2018, and what pleasure to have her as a guest. In Linda's words: "Music has been at the center of my life since I can remember. Early influences include Karla Bonoff, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell: many other female singer songwriters since then have shaped my taste in music: Lucinda Williams, Patty Griffin, Emmylou Harris, Mia Borders, Caroline Herring, Susan Cowsill, Lynn Drury, Shannon McNally, Amy Mann and Brandi Carlile. This list is actually pretty endless--I would also have to include the Beatles, the Stones, and the women of the early blues movement, such as Memphis Minnie. I write Americana music, rooted in my life experiences. Many of my songs tell stories, and they are all different; I don't want to write in just one style--I am open to a variety of music, from country to soul. In short, I am a work in progress and I hope you like what you hear. Little Queenie was released on my birthday in 2016, and No Limits, my second album, was released in October of 2017. I am currently writing and recording songs for my next record, due out in the spring of 2019. My style continues to evolve! You can hear my songs here, as well as on Seattle Wave Radio and Local Roots Music NW Radio, available for purchase on CD Baby and BandCamp." A simple but important point is made in this interview as a recurring theme throughout all; music is for everyone and although it helps, no special skills or education are required to enjoy listening to or creating your own. But as seen below, Linda is a bit of an overachiever. EDUCATION-- Writing Fellows Institute, University of Washington, Tacoma; September - June, 2009 Adjunct Faculty Institute, Tacoma Community College; January - March 2006 Summer School for Applied Aesthetics, Lahti Finland; August 18-23, 2002 The School of Criticism and Theory, Cornell University; June 20 - July 26, 2001 The School of Criticism and Theory, Dartmouth College; June 17 - July 26, 1996 Ph.
