We had an absolute blast talking about this film and even talked about poop for like 10 minutes…trust me…it gets wild. ENJOY! Pastor Rob Danz preached a sermon titled "Along Came Poly" that walks through some of his recent struggles, and shares what we all can do when we go through very difficult seasons that don't seem to stop. A weak gospel and a bad theology of suffering will absolutely crush us in the storms of life, but if we can walk in the truth, we can overcome, not quit, and glorify Jesus in whatever comes our way.

This week, we're back on the rom-com train with another selection from Hayley's collection, as we raise a blind ferret and get down with the scuba man. It's 2003's Along Came Polly, written and directed by John Hamburg, and starring Ben Stiller, Jennifer Aniston, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Debra Messing, Alec Baldwin, and Hank Azaria, along with countless other famous funny people who oddly aren't allowed to do anything funny in this film. It's one we come to out of appreciation for the late great PSH, and he gives an outstanding performance -- how much you love Mr. Hoffman may very well make this one worth watching for you, but sadly little else here registers. That's alright though: both hosts are fresh back from the theatre having seen Alex Garland's Civil War, and J Mo's got a bonus theatrical field report from Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. If you'd like to watch Along Came Polly before listening to this episode (and we do not recommend that you do), it is currently streaming on Starz at the time of publication. Other works discussed in this episode include King Kong (2005), Godzilla vs Kong, Men, Annihilation, Dredd, Bad Times at the El Royale, Fallout: The Series, Captain Marvel, Galaxy Quest, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, There's Something About Mary, When Harry Met Sally..., Duplex, Envy, Meet The Fockers, Tropic Thunder, Zoolander, Garden State, The Ben Stiller Show, Mystery Men, Flirting With Disaster, Keeping The Faith, Reality Bites, Empire Records, Singles, 30 Rock, Empire of the Sun, Heroes, The Wrestler, The Virgin Suicides, and The Iron Claw. We'll be back next week to wrap up the month with Hayley's nominee for April's canon induction, as we'll look back at Stephen Sommers' 1999 summer blockbuster The Mummy starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, coinciding with it's 25-year-anniversary theatrical re-release. The Mummy is currently streaming free on Tubi at the time of publication. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
This week, we're taking up arms against the British and making moves on our dead wife's sister as we get downright independent with 2000's The Patriot, directed by Roland Emmerich, and starring Mel Gibson, Heath Ledger, Jason Isaacs, Tom Wilkinson, Joely Richardson, Chris Cooper, Rene Auberjonois, Donal Logue, Adam Baldwin, Gregory Smith and a young Logan Lerman. Try as we might to tie into this week's release of Alex Garland's Civil War, this is a war epic about the War of Independence, and just like Independence Day, when America needed a rousing, slightly fascistic display of patriotism via action cinema, you need the propagandist touch that can only come from a German. This movie is also nearly three hours long, so needless to say, Hayley hated it. Meanwhile J Mo's got a theatrical field report on Sydney Sweeney's latest, Immaculate, and Hayley's getting down with some crunchy sugar cereals. Other works discussed on this episode include The First Omen, The Omen, The First Purge, The Purge, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Dark Side of the Ring, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Ghostbusters (2016), Isle of Dogs, The French Dispatch, Asteroid City, The Royal Tenenbaums, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Moonfall, Small Soldiers, Zodiac, Full Metal Jacket, Firefly / Serenity, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, The Princess Diaries, Waterworld, Escape From New York, the music of Queens of the Stone Age, Ima Robot and Diana Ross & The Supremes, and the video games Spider-Man: Miles Morales and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. We'll be back next week as we stay in the early 2000s with a completely different type of picture: the 2004 rom-com Along Came Polly, an unseen selection from Hayley's collection that packs a dynamite supporting performance from Philip Seymour Hoffman. If you'd like to watch the movie along with us it is currently streaming on Starz in Canada at the time of publication. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
We had a hard time finding movies for each other to see from 2007, as it was a banner year in movie history and we'd already seen a lot. Brad recommended that Jake watch "The Man from Earth," a microbudget film with a unique sci-fi conceit and no special effects at all. Jake gave Brad "The Savages," Tamara Jenkins' second film, starring Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman as disaffected siblings forced to united to take care of their ailing, estranged father. 2007 is considered by many to be the best year in modern movie history. "There Will Be Blood" and "No Country for Old Men" dominated at the Oscars, while "Zodiac" and "Michael Clayton" established enduring legacies. We had a lot of fun discussing this year. Hosted by Brad Garoon & Jake Ziegler Other movies discussed in this episode: Slums of Beverly Hills (1998), Along Came Polly (2004), Juno (2007), Stardust (2007), Young Adult (2011), Coherence (2013), the Infinite Man (2014), the Man from Earth: Holocene (2017), Freaks (2018), Private Lives (2018), Tully (2018), and Kung Fu Panda 4 (2024)

Along came Philip Seymour Hoffman more like it... am I right!? Who knew he would piece together one of the great comedic performances of this century and come off the bench to carry a Ben Stiller Rom-Com in 2004? But he did and we celebrate it and some more of the work of the late, great PSH. We also talk toilet humour, blind ferrets, Jennifer Aniston's career, "ethnic food" and heaps more. Please join us as we breakdown our first Rom-Com...
Erin Rector has been on a journey of self discovery and improvement for many years, and it turns out this entire time she wasn't alone! Falling into the pattern of losing weight and gaining back for many years, she always felt deep down that something “bigger” was going on. Tired of being made to feel like she wasn't trying hard enough or doing the right things from her doctors trainers, she refused to give up hope that she would find someone to listen to her. After being introduced to a friend through networking, she decided to try yet another consultation, this time through Novis Health in Knoxville Tennessee. Finally getting answers she had been longing for, it was discovered that she had severe gut issues including e.Coli, a parasite she picked up at 7 years old, and a host of other bacterial problems. Fast forward 6 months later, (fastest they've ever seen!) and Erin has kicked Polly the 32 year old Parasite out for good! Ironically, Erin 'fell' into food safety and has dedicated herself to helping businesses and communities protect their food supply chain for over 15 years. When she isn't facilitating food safety training, she is a dedicated mother and wife living in Knoxville, TN. Tune in to hear OWL about Erin's journey, her symptoms and chronic issues, and some scary statistics on how many of us are possibly walking around with our own Polly the Parasite!
Lots of sights and sounds at New Orleans Jazz Fest. ----- My wife, a college friend and I stood amidst the peace and quiet of Jazz Fest in New Orleans last weekend along with what must have been 100,000 of our closest friends. It was a sight. When my wife and I told our friends we were going, they reacted the same was as when I told them we were going to Mexico for spring break – “Oh no,” they said. “That's dangerous over there. You're going to get shot.” During my thirty-six hours in New Orleans, I never once felt unsafe. To the great disappointment of my schadenfreude friends, we returned to Mobile unscathed. Which has led me to the conclusion that many of my friends are ninnies and are best left at home. I'm hoping heaven is a lot like the Gospel Stage at Jazz Fest. A cool breeze blew through the tented area. People were happy to slide a chair or two over to make room us. Most importantly, there were chairs. And, wow, the music. Argue if you want, but there's more energy coming from the Gospel Stage than any other Jazz Fest stage. When you're singing about the glory of the Lord, energy comes naturally. And when this middle aged, overweight, thinning haired white guy rose to his feet waiving his palms in the air to show that the spirit was moving…well, I couldn't believe myself. It was very out of character. But I felt it. And I loved it. One thing I don't love are large sweaty shirtless men. Or even small sweaty shirtless men. And there were a lot of them at Jazz Fest. They were everywhere. We left the Gospel Tent to wander the exhibits and try the food…and they were everywhere. One of the hardest movie scenes to watch ever is the scene from Along Came Polly when Ben Stiller's character plays basketball and, well, rubs up against a big sweaty guy. If you know what I'm talking about, you know. That was my fear. Shirts should be required when you're standing in crowded areas waiting for the acts to start. And when the music starts, the shirtless men more than others, become quite the charismatic dancers. I minded my own business, but I kept them in my periphery hoping I wouldn't have one of those Ben Stiller moments and have to wash my entire body in molten lava or, more likely, decide my life was simply no longer worth it. After watching Jon Cleary play some fantastic funk music, we turned to leave and hordes of people were filing in to see Kenny Loggins finish out the day on that same stage. You gotta respect Kenny Loggins but, for me, his music isn't good enough to risk proximity to gobs of sweaty, shirtless, charismatic dancing men. Not my scene. But in they marched, packing the area, eager for Kenny Loggins. They were excited to get Footloose as they headed into the shirtless Danger Zone. Don't Fight It. This is It. And as for me not seeing Kenny's show, I'm Alright. I'm Cam Marston and I'm just trying to Keep it Real.

Coming off of last week's episode regarding "Along Came Polly", the podcast was inundated with messages regarding the man who is rumored to have inspired Philip Seymour Hoffman's character, Sandy Lyle in the film. So this week, we bring to you an exclusive interview with Steve, college housemate of the film's director, John Hamburg; past performer of Judas in a community theater production of "Jesus Christ Superstar" and former habitue of the NYC pick-up basketball scene. Take a listen to Steve's story and draw your own conclusion as to whether or not this tie is real or imagined. Plus, Anne reveals something about her past that even Crissy never knew. This week will once again have you shaking your head at what goes on in this world. We start with the story of a man who broke into a convenience store but left something intentionally behind. Plus, we had the story of a new bill being proposed to lessen prisoners' sentences in exchange for what??? And the culprit in a string of animal kidnappings from a Dallas zoo has finally been found. And after much debate, we chose the final "Sweetheart" of our "America's Sweetheart" month - Jennifer Aniston. We discuss her comedy with Ben Stiller, "Along Came Polly". Do you know which of Jen's co-stars was the only man she did more than one film with? (up until she just reunited with Adam Sandler in "Murder Mystery 2" - which is on Netflix so not sure that even counts) February was a quick one. Hope you loved these episodes as much as we did. “I was a comedy nerd kid,” said screenwriter John Hamburg. “Then I got a video camera for my 15th birthday, and I started making short films. In college, I started writing plays and monologues. Then I got serious about writing.” As a playwright, Hamburg said he learned the importance of writing and re-writing to the process. Eventually this led him to Film School and then a string of iconic comedies, like Meet the Parents, Zoolander, Along Came Polly, I Love You Man, Night School, and Me Time. In the latest film for Netflix, Hamburg is both the writer and director. The plot follows a dad (Kevin Hart) who finds time for himself for the first time in years while his wife and kids are away, so he reconnects with an old friend (Mark Wahlberg) for a wild weekend. Starring Kevin Hart and Mark Wahlberg, Me Time follows a stay-at-home dad (Hart) who joins an old friend (Wahlberg) on a wild birthday adventure while his family is away. Writer-director John Hamburg discusses his approach to balancing character and laughs in a comedy: "I really do aim to keep the characters grounded and to treat them as human beings. Frankly, even in a movie as absurd as Zoolander, we tried to give an emotional arc to Derek Zoolander and to Hansel, and it's no different with this movie that takes place in the real world." Despite having hugely impressive titles like Zoolander and Along Came Polly under his belt, Hamburg still experiences insecurity as a filmmaker: "...it took me a while to stop [comparing myself to others], and I fall into that trap today, having been in the business for more than two decades... I think the advice I would give a younger, more naïve John Hamburg is, 'Just focus on yourself and listen; watch stuff, and get inspired.'" Me Time can be streamed on Netflix starting August 26. There's no doubt Bryan Brown is Australian acting royalty. He started his career back in the 1970s and has gone to have plenty of success at home and abroad. His credits include Cocktail, Along Came Polly, Australia and The Thorn Birds. Brown was inducted into the Logie Hall of Fame in 1989, but certainly hasn't stopped there. Now he's back with a new drama, Darby and Joan, which is out on Acorn TV now. Bryan Brown joined Mike Hosking. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Before he was the neurotic guy in movies like Along Came Polly, Night at the Museum, Meet the Parents, and There's Something About Mary, Ben Stiller was the neurotic guy in this mid-90s gem. But is there a future for the characters in this story? Dan and Jon decide.Next episode: Back to the Future (1985)Contact us, follow us on social media, or buy some merch at linktr.ee/RuinedChildhoods
We wrap up the 2021-2022 season the only way we know how: with Along Came Polly quotes and Guster. It was a memorable weekend in the Big Easy so we discussed the Duke/UNC semifinal and the coronation of the Jayhawks. Nobody actually cared to hear our thoughts on Kansas/Villanova, right? That was a complete bloodbath. Then we give Taylor and Shark their props for excelling in their own right. Last but not least, we give out our final hugs to those that were kind enough to join our little operation. Thanks to you, the listener, for a remarkable season. We can't do any of this without you. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna unplug, go get married, buy a house, and monitor the transfer portal. Helluva season, pals!
Alain did not enjoy this movie when he first saw it along time ago, however that is because he was too young to appreciate the intricacy of Philip Seymour Hoffman's comedic acting. Along Came Polly (2004) stars Ben Stiller, Jennifer Aniston, and Alec Baldwin. Definitely on the lower end of all these actor's careers
