READ ROB'S BOOK HERE: https://www.haymarketbooks.org/books/2215-mastering-the-universe   Mastering the Universe Introduction:   When we think of "Masters of the Universe," we may be reminded of He-Man, with his mighty sword, standing guard at Castle Grayskull against Skeletor and his monstrous allies. But in Professor Rob Larson's latest book, "Masters of the Universe: The Obscene Wealth of the Ruling Class, What They Do with Their Money, and Why You Should Hate Them Even More," There are no animated heroes or villains. Instead, Larson presents us with the all-too-real battle between the 1% and the rest of the world, where the obscene wealth of the elite continues to grow unchecked, resulting in deepening inequality, environmental devastation, and an entrenchment of power that threatens democracy itself.    The title may sound exaggerated, but Larson methodically explains how the ruling class wields unimaginable wealth, shaping global economic, political, and environmental outcomes in their favor. As Larson writes, "The system isn't broken—it's rigged. For the wealthy, inequality isn't a bug in the system; it's the feature." Since the Occupy movement brought the 1% into the national consciousness, this elite class has only fortified its hold over our institutions, exploiting crises like the COVID-19 pandemic to increase their fortunes even further.   Today, we'll delve into the moral, economic, and environmental obscenities of extreme wealth with Rob Larson, exploring how the elites use their fortunes to maintain power and destroy the planet. We'll also examine what, if anything, can be done to dismantle this concentrated power before it's too late.   We'll talk with economist and professor Rob Larson about his latest book, why we should hate the obscenely wealthy even more than we do, and much more! Steve Rick, chief economist at TruStage, expects a unique occurrence in Federal Reserve actions between now and election date, with inflation dropping down to its target rate of 2 percent while the labor market reaches equilibrium, with the unemployment rate hitting 4.5 percent. Rick says that good news -- which will be accompanied by rate cuts from the central bank -- will push any potential recession back into 2025 and possibly '26, with economic growth falling below 2 percent, under long-term norms but not so bad that the economy craters. David Trainer, founder and president, New Constructs, pulls a shocker in the "Danger Zone," saying that a member of the Magnificent Seven -- a stock with one of the largest market capitalizations in the world -- has run so far, so fast that it is overdue for a reset that could bring the stock down by more than 60 percent. What if we told you that the political economy of Silicon Valley, the European Union's impact on big tech platforms, and Apple's recent victory against Epic Games are just the tip of the iceberg of a rapidly changing global economy? Join us for a thought-provoking discussion with our guest, Rob Larson, professor of Economics and author of books such as "Capitalism vs. Freedom" and "Bit Tire and Subpolitical Economy of Silicon Valley." The shine has come off Gates a bit recently, thanks to the negative publicity surrounding both his divorce and his staunch defense of corporate intellectual property rights over vaccines during the pandemic. Prof. Linsey McGoey of the University of Essex was one of the earliest major critics of the Gates Foundation's work, and her 2015 book No Such Thing As A Free Gift: The Gates Foundation and the Price of Philanthropy is a stinging criticism of "philanthrocapitalism." McGoey's book goes through the history of business tycoons trying to save the world through charity, beginning with Andrew Carnegie in the 19th century. McGoey explains clearly why charitable giving, though it may look like an unambiguous positive, has a number of major downsides including:- The lack of democratic accountability for what private foundations choose to fund (see the Gates foundation's funding of school privatization schemes)- The refusal to consider solutions that threaten the sources of the foundation's wealth or call into question the broader hierarchy of wealth and power- The funding of things that look good on paper and flatter the billionaire donor but aren't actually what people in need are asking forThese criticisms have been made by the left since the time of Oscar Wilde's "The Soul of Man Under Socialism," but McGoey brings them up to date by showing clearly how even an organization like the Gates Foundation, that presents itself as having a benign commitment to health and education, is actually insidious. In this conversation, Prof. McGoey and Current Affairs editor in chief Nathan J. Robinson discuss the career of Gates, the problems with billionaire charity, and the reasons philanthrocapitalists often escape serious criticism. They also discuss Prof. McGoey's work in the field of "ignorance studies." In The Unknowers: How Strategic Ignorance Rules The World, Prof. McGoey studies the way institutions carefully exclude ideologically inconvenient information, creating a kind of useful ignorance. The article that Nathan and Rob Larson wrote about Bill Gates is here. The piece on billionaires' memoirs is here."Charity creates a multitude of sins." — Oscar Wilde, "The Soul of Man Under Socialism"

Join us for a conversation between Nicole Aschoff and Rob Larson on how Big Tech and its philosopher kings are profiting off the coronavirus crisis, why that should make you angry, and what we can do about it. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- With the necessity of social distancing forcing more and more of our lives to be lived through our screens, technology has begun seeping even deeper into the crevices of our social fabric. With everything from elementary school classes to routine doctor's visits being mediated by various apps, smart phones, and computers, Silicon Valley is poised to be more profitable—and more powerful as a political force—than ever before. Tales of Amazon's record profits, and Bill Gates's boundless generosity are presented by the media as the silver-linings we can all believe in amidst the endless torrent of pandemic related bad news. And yet signs of the tech related scandals-to-come are already all around us—Elon Musk's move to re-open his smart-car factories and stories of Zoom's predatory data hoovering practices being just two among many. Join authors, activists, and radicals Rob Larson and Nicole Aschoff as they discuss why we should resist swallowing the tech industry's puff, spin, and outright lies, and whether we use their own platforms against them to build digital socialism. Rob Larson is a professor of economics at Tacoma Community College and author of Bit Tyrants: The Political Economy of Silicon Valley, and Capitalism vs. Freedom. In many ways picking up where his previous book, Capitalism vs Freedom: The Toll Road to Serfdom (Zero Books, 2018), left off, Rob launches a scathing but thoughtful critique on libertarian-style techno utopianism and reveals the often ignored aspect that the public sector has played in important technological innovations.   I'm still sad his book got stolen from me.  "Capitalism vs. Freedom: The Toll Road to Serfdom" is the perfect response for your libertarian friends or your anarcho capitalist homies that believe that the problem in the system is NOT THE SYSTEM ITSELF, but the government. Freer markets and less federal oversight will bring forth more innovation, and more freedom.  I like, professor Larson find that to be maddeningly farcical.    We recorded this episode before the Nov. 3rd election, and we discuss Prop. 22.  A bill created and paid for by for by rideshare companies Uber, Lyft, Doordash, Instacart, and Postmates.  The bill is a response to California Assembly Bill 5 that says that gig workers for these companies are not "contractors" but actually should be viewed as employees who deserve worker protections.  Tech giants Uber, Lyft, Doordash, Instacart, and Postmates are claiming that if they have to a minimum wage, paid sick leave, and workers compensation, all benefits awarded to workers in the state, then they will be forced into bankruptcy.  It says a lot about a company and the system in which we live where when you are faced with the fact that you have to make some BARE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS to your employees, the people that are the driving force behind your business, you threaten to leave.     Never underestimate the exploitative nature of capitalism.  Not "crony capitalism", but CAPITALISM.   Read about Prop 22 and AB 5 here: https://www.epi.org/publication/how-californias-ab5-protects-workers-from-misclassification/   Follow Professor Larson on Twitter: @IronicProfessor   Read Professor Larson in Current Affairs: https://www.currentaffairs.org/2020/09/the-tuttle-twins-and-the-case-of-the-really-bad-libertarian-propaganda   Read Rob Larson in Jacobin: https://www.jacobinmag.com/2020/04/bill-gates-foundation-philanthropy-microsoft   Buy Capitalism vs. Freedom: The Toll Road to Serfdom: https://www.johnhuntpublishing.com/zer0-books/our-books/capitalism-freedom   Buy Professor Larson's latest book, Bit Tyrants: https://www.haymarketbooks.org/books/1381-bit-tyrants   Thank you again for taking the time to check this out.  If you enjoy this show, then please think about supporting independent media like this by becoming a patron.  You'll get bonus content from many of the shows, we're creating patron only content, and you get MERCH!    Become a patron now: https://www.patreon.com/BitterLakePresents     Please follow, like, share, and subscribe to the following platforms   YouTube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCG9WtLyoP9QU8sxuIfxk3eg   Facebook https://www.facebook.com/Thisisrevolutionpodcast   Twitch https://www.twitch.tv/thisisrevolutionpodcast   Twitter @TIRShowOakland   Instagram @thisisrevolutionoakland   Medium https://medium.com/@jasonmyles/vengeance-has-no-foresight-837212d85a97

The five biggest corporations in the world by market value are Google, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft and Facebook. Their head honchos the Zuckerbergs, Gates and Bezos make the Vanderbilts, Morgans and Carnegies of the Gilded Age look like pikers. These “masters of mankind” as Adam Smith called them, love to pay lip service to competition. But you know what? They want absolute domination and control. Monopoly is not a board game for them, it is the essence of their very being. And they rely on state power to secure their position. The big five capitalist firms dominate the means of work and social interaction. Collectively, these technopolies represent a tremendous concentration of power both economic and political which do not bode well for the needs of a democratic society. Their amassing of our data is threatening. What can be done?

This week Eric welcomes to the show author and academic Rob Larson to discuss his latest book "Capitalism vs. Freedom: The Toll Road to Serfdom" and the ideologies and politics that inspired it. Rob explains why he felt it was important to combat the pernicious influence of right wing economic ideas, and the discourse by which it is spread. Eric and Rob examine the origins of neoliberalism and modern far right economics, and how they were translated into policy, both domestically and internationally. The conversation explores ideas about the nature of freedom, the ruthless efficiency of capitalism and privatization, and the need for dictatorships to carry out right wing Friedmanite economic policies. The second half of the show discusses some contemporary political questions, whether the Trump administration is truly neoliberal, how anarcho-capitalists and neoliberals explain away the glaring holes in their theories, and so much more. Don't miss this wide-ranging discussion. Music: Max Romeo - "Socialism Is Love"

#100 Episode Celebration LIVE Game Show! Hello 2018! Well, 2017 was rough and can seriously stick it. We are here now in 2018, and I started it right with a live game show of The Match Game called "Marta Match" complete with magic by Lee Terbosic, a musical drag show by Deep Violet, free craft beer, retro gaming, a butt load of laughter, merriment, a good cause like Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Pittsburgh and welcome friends! The night was better than I could have expected. I had THE best time, and it truly was a dream come true for me to be your game show host for the evening. We had such wonderful talent on stage. Deep Violet and Lee Terbosic NAILED their performances to the point I couldn't breathe I was laughing so hard. Remember to support Pittsburgh creativity and local events, because there is so much of it out there that is making it happen. A few hundred thanks... I wanted to give a personal thank you to the staff at City Theatre for rocking my evening. Everything was so on point, professional, and fun. Adam Nelson for being my personal "Manna White", and game master, Thomas Douglas for providing his expert musical skills, and my panelists who MADE my evening so much brighter. I could do this everyday. Hopefully I will get to do it again, very soon. A MASSIVE thank you goes out to my sponsors- Helicon brewing, Levity, Selective Foods, Gaucho Parilla Argentina, Aldo's Food Service, Harris Grill, and The Church Recording Studio. Without your support, this would have never have happened. Last but not least, I want to thank each and every one of you who donated your time on the coldest day of the year to come out to this event. I know it is hard getting out of that onesie. Hell, I am in one right now. You did though, and you made my wish happen. THANK YOU! IF you didn't get the chance to come (That does suck cause you probably missed the best party of the year, but we won't hold that against you.) Here is the audio from the evening that I am releasing as my 100th episode. I truly hope everyone's 2018 is magical. Let's make some amazing memories together :) NOTE- I have many requests for T- Shirts for the event, so I am doing a one time pre order. The design will be up soon. If interested please email Martafoos@gmail.com Also if you subscribe to my newsletter you will get pictures from the evening that are not posted here. Special thanks to Rob Larson Photography and Buzzy Torek Photography for capturing moments from the evening. Also special thanks to these folks who donated items and cash to raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters! Jason Bowden, Pittsburgh Love, Enter The Imaginarium, Spork Restaurant, Muv Integrated Physical Culture, Body Work 412, Fredrick Wildman and Sons, Hunt's Treasures, Helicon Brewing, Harris Grill,  Games Unlimited, and Pittsburgh Retro Gaming. A personal thank you to Akemi Harrison, Carl Hunt, Adam Nelson, Jenna Elizabeth, Natalie Hatcher, Brad Driscoll, Greg Messmer, Brad Peterson, Tony Ferrari, and Leah Blackwood for all their awesome work. Welcome to the first ever Pajama Party Podcast!  What is it?  It is pretty much the same as Marta On The Move, only thing is, people are wearing Pj's (including the guests) and it is usually a live audience!  I started these in my home just for the fun of getting folks together to relax and take in an interactive show.  There won't be a ton of them,(probably once or twice a year) so eat it up while you can! We chat on this cast about the history of Pittsburgh, and why it is all well and good to remember the good history, it is just as important to remember the not so good.  You will LOVE this podcast.  John will be back on (because we had that great a time) for another PPP next year, if not sooner.  Stay tuned later in the month for Leslie Gray the Steel City Medium who joined us later in the evening to chat about all things Psychic.  It got very, very interesting!' Check out John's website HERE! A massive thank you to my hubby and to Rob Larson at www.roblarsonphoto.com for snapping the photos and engaging the show!   Podcast episode is brought to you by Sipes and Son!
