Multi-instrumentalist Gebhard Ullmann grew up near Bonn, studied medicine and music in Hamburg starting in 1976, and moved to Berlin in 1983 to live as a professional musician. One year later, the 27-year-old was leading (and co-leading) his own bands, releasing his first albums in 1985. The next few years saw him working with Alexander Von Schlippenbach and Paul Bley (among many others) as well as touring the Middle East, East Africa, Australia, New Zealand, South East Asia, Turkey, Poland, Lithuania and Estonia.  In this episode, Gebhard shares his background, education, and musical journey. After focusing on Enrico Rava's discography as leader, this week we explore his more than five decades of work as co-leader & sideman. The statuture of an artist can be measured not only through the albums s/he has recorded but also by the caliber of the musicians he has played with. There are not many who can claim to have collaborated with such a remarkable and diverse range of musicians like Cecil Taylor, Archie Shepp, Lee Konitz, Gianluigi Trovesi, Franco D'Andrea, Henri Texier, Aldo Romano, Marc Ducret, and Gato Barbieri, to name just a few. During the first part of the show we focus on his work in Europe. During the second part we explore his electric projects, duos, in particular with pianists, and work with heavy-weights of the NYC avant-garde scene like Cecil Taylor, Archie Shepp and Jimmy Lyons. A live jazz set from Aufsturz Klub in Berlin, Germany by GULF of Berlin on today’s episode of The Jazz Hole Live with Linus. GULF of Berlin’s Soundresearch Project focuses on improvised compositions and it consists of Gebhard Ullmann (tenor saxophone, bass clarinet), Gerhard Gschlössl (trombone, sousaphone), Johannes Fink (bass, cello), Jan Leipnitz (drums) and special guest Michael Haves (live electronics). All of the musicians come from different parts of Germany, bringing their various backgrounds and influences into this band. While their improvisations are free, all players think compositionally. El saxofonista Iñaki Rodríguez y el baterista Hilario Rodeiro han participado en algunos proyectos de improvisación libre como The Big Free Tongue. Ambos han puesto disponible en libre descarga su encuentro titulado 2nd Day. Aunque qué mejor que escuchar al propio Iñaki Rodríguez que es quien presenta esta grabación antes de que suene su inicio y su final. El pianista Uwe Oberg y la saxofonista y clarinetista Silke Eberhard rinden homenaje en Turns (Leo Records) a algunas figuras esenciales del jazz como Paul Bley, aunque de un modo indirecto. Por un lado lo hacen por medio de versiones de temas de Jimmy Giuffre (“Emphasis”), Carla Bley (“King Korn”) y Annette Peacock (“Mr. Joy”), por citar algunos. Por otro lado está la inspiración del genial pianista canadiense que también llega además de a las versiones, a los temas de Oberg y Eberhard. Tras el nombre Jun y Gor están el guitarrista A. L. Guillén y el baterista Javier Carmona. En su estreno homónimo en el inquieto sello Alina Records, disponible gratuitamente como la inmensa mayoría de referencias de su catálogo, plantean una propuesta abierta, variada y llena de momentos melódicos con una gran intensidad. Suenan “Pecholata” y “Long Hot Summer Night”, dos maneras magníficas –aunque hay más- de entender la mencionada variedad. Geode (Leo Records) del saxofonista y clarinetista bajo Gebhard Ullmann y el pianista Achim Kaufmann es un primer encuentro musical, una situación especialmente habitual y buscada en el mundo de la improvisación libre. De esos momentos de inspiración instantánea pueden llegar a surgir planteamientos de lo más variado: temas abstractos, animados e incluso de una enorme belleza. Una parte de esa variedad es lo que se puede apreciar en “Interanimation “, “Lightly Enticed “, “Roadside Verges “. El EP es un formato no muy habitual ni en el jazz ni en la libre improvisación, aunque la limitación de la duración permite una concreción que no está presente en otros formatos.
