They say we are the sum of our experiences, and as many musicians know, whatever life throws at us, we can take and turn into art. No one knows this better than my guest on the podcast this week, Ray LeVier. Ray is a drummer, composer, producer, author, and motivational speaker who has played and recorded with John Abercrombie, Dave Binney, KJ Denhert, Joe Locke, Francois Moutin, Wayne Krantz, Mike Stern, and Rich Tozzoli.  At the age of 12, Ray suffered severe burns all over his body which left him unable to play the drums in a more ‘traditional' way. As a result, Ray has come up with his own innovative methods to play the drums. Ray's story is one of hope and resilience and he shares all of it with us in this episode.  Listen in as we discuss Ray's breathing techniques, how to achieve a flow state and optimal performance, how drummers with physical limitations can overcome the challenge and play effectively, why mindfulness is key to creating beautiful art, and more. Let's dive in. var podscribeEmbedVars = { epId: 106695817, backgroundColor: 'white', font: undefined, fontColor: undefined, speakerFontColor: undefined, height: '600px', showEditButton: false, showSpeakers: true, showTimestamps: true };

Kevin Scott is a bassist well known for his heavy groove, creative lines and dirty bass tone, usually on a P bass with flats. Having backed up artists like John McLaughlin, Wayne Krantz, Col. Bruce Hampton his musical arsenal is deep and he has an innate ability to allow the music to percolate and evolve while holding down the groove. Currently on tour with Gov't Mule, I caught up with Kevin before a show at the Vogue Theater in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Cliff Almond is one of the most underrated drummers of the past 30 years with one core element, "The Grid", that creates this effortless transition from Michel Camilo and Wayne Krantz, to arena rock tours and studio sessions. He also happens to be the drummer in my band, the drummer on my latest album "Night Watch", and one of my great friends of almost 20 years. He may be from a generation that came before me, but has more respect for the music, the process, and the search for what is next that most musicians I know from ANY generation. He is a fountain of musical youth, a wealth of knowledge and experience, and is without question in my hall of fame list of drummers that I still can't believe I get to play with on a regular basis.Enjoy, JanekP.S. Growing-up in Queens, Lionel Cordew was surrounded by music inside his home, in his neighborhood, and in church. His brothers were all involved in music, his mother sang in the gospel choir at the church where his father was the minister, and his neighborhood hosted block parties where cats like Lenny White, Marcus Miller, Omar Hakim, Najee and many others would often play. Lionel absorbed and adapted to many styles of music, which he's used to his benefit throughout the course of his career, as he's recorded and toured with a diverse list of musicians, including Mike Stern, Gino Vannelli, Jeff Lorber, Roberta Flack, Bill Evans, Chuck Loeb, Chieli Minucci, Wayne Krantz, and in 2015 he replaced Lee Pearson as the drummer in the legendary jazz group, Spyro Gyra. Episode Notes Episode 7.... who would have thunk it? We continue our verbal onslaught. This week, we dive right into a Holdsworth quote, paraphrasing, where he mentions the goal for him playing live is to not just regurgitate what he practiced, but to play something he never even tried before. How do you practice for that? We also talk about a hypothesis of Tim's that's surely to get a few people upset, but not intentionally, haha.... Essentially there seems to be 3 primary types of uses of amplification in the guitar world. Type 1: Using amplification solely to make the sound of your guitar louder. You don't want the amplifier to color the tone of your instrument much, if at all, and you're really not working with the amp in any particular way, you just want it to make you louder. Type 2: The amp is just as important as the guitar, your instrument is the guitar and amp, and one without the other might as well be clicking keys on a keyboard. The amp has to be a certain volume/feel... do certain things when you roll the tone and volume knobs around, expressive kind of playing. Type 3: More or you create sounds. It doesn't so much matter what amp, though the amp itself (like a Mesa sound) might be one of the sounds you want. This is the person who crafts sounds to be very specific. It really doesn't matter if its modelling or an amp, as long as the end result sounds a certain way. Everyone, for the most part, is a little bit of each category, but most tend to fall into one camp more than the other. This has a lot to do with what stage volume you need to... and why different players have different takes on the stage situation. We also talk a bit about playing in Pit orchestras and all kinds of other stuff. Some players mentioned worth checking out: Allan Holdsworth, Chris Crocco, Gustavo Assil Brasil, Stephen Aron, Steve Vai (again, haha), Wayne Krantz, Michael Landau... and probably others I'm forgetting (sorry). https://woodairmetal.pinecast.co/ RSS Feed: https://pinecast.com/feed/woodairmetal https://www.facebook.com/woodairmetal https://www.timmirth.com/ ***Track playing is "Impressions" by John Coltrane : solo by Tim Mirth, with a killer Abersold backing track.... Whynot Jansveld is a bass player/composer/mastering engineer who has recorded and/or toured with artists such as Richard Marx, Linda Perry, Butch Walker, Gavin DeGraw, The Weepies, Wayne Krantz and many more. Not only is Whynot an incredible musician, he's also an excellent person who has a lot to say about music and what makes it great. Hailing from the Netherlands he is my first international guest, and I think this difference in perspective brought a lot of very interesting conversation out of both of us. In this episode we discuss one of the most popular records of the 80's, Tears For Fears "Songs From The Big Chair," which I must admit I hadn't heard with exception of the huge radio hits that it contains. The music here was so meticulously crafted that it left both Whynot and myself with endless topics of discussion, ranging from the songwriting to production techniques to session musicians. The second record that Whynot chose is a much lesser known work by a American band from Georgia, Mother's Finest. They are the perfect example of a band whose dynamite live performances earned them the finest opening band slots in the world, touring with legends like The Who, AC/DC, Black Sabbath and Aerosmith. Although they had some American radio success, their straddling of rock and funk left them in a genre of their own, making it quite difficult to get radio play. But in Europe, they garnered a cult like following from Europeans hungry for both rock and funk music, and Whynot is the perfect example of this. We talk about how this record influenced him and when it became a part of his life, as well as the various genre bending influences of Mother's Finest. This live album, According to Whynot and many of their fans, is the band at the pinnacle of their powers.Check it out, like and subscribe! Stir Crazy With Steve Jenkins: Conversations With Creatives During The Quarantine

In episode 8, I speak to Tim Lefebvre.Tim is one of my favorite bass players. Shit, chances are, he’s probably one of your favorite bass players.Throughout his wide-ranging career, Tim Lefebvre has amassed a reputation for being one of the world’s most innovative bassists. The Foxboro-native’s creative playing style is an addictive blend of jazz improvisation, rock undertones, and electronic grooves that can be heard on his appearances on over 150 recordings, ranging from Grammy award-winning albums such as David Bowie’s Blackstar to the soundtracks of classic films such as The Departed. From 2013 to 2018, Lefebvre was the bassist of the dynamic blues rock ensemble Tedeschi Trucks Band, and he can be heard on their three most recent releases, Let Me Get By (2016), Live From The Fox Oakland (2017), and Signs (2019). Before joining the group, he worked with artists such as Uri Caine, Chris Botti, and Leni Stern. Now based in Los Angeles, Lefebvre is currently the bassist for numerous groups, most notably with jazz-fusion guitarist Wayne Krantz, improvisational free-jazz group Whose Hat Is This?, and his Blackstar bandmate Donny McCaslin. He has recently performed with Chris Potter, Jon Batiste and Stay Human on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Empire of the Sun, Carole King, Ben Platt, Knower, and Matisyahu as well. Lefebvre is also the producer for a diverse range of projects, which includes singer-songwriter Rachel Eckroth’s album When It Falls (2018). Through all of these experiences over the past two decades, Lefebvre has constantly expanded his musical artistry, discovering new sounds for the bass guitar and influencing a generation of musicians along the way.

My guest today is Mr. Wayne Krantz. Wayne is one of my favorite guitarists and musicians and I was so glad to finally be able to have him on the show. I frequent the 55 Bar in NYC where he can be found on most Thursday nights playing with an ever revolving cast of NYC's finest musicians as part of his trio, which is always a treat for the ears.A guitarist and musician with a highly original approach to the instrument, Wayne loves to take musical chances, trusts his ideas and leads the path of a true improvisor. Shortly after moving to NY in 1987, Wayne made a huge decision which would impact his music and style forever- to completely abandon all pre-conceived licks and cliches and reinvent himself, forcing himself to come up with his own original voice.In this interview Wayne talks at length  about the early days in NYC, working with Leni Stern, Steely Dan and eventually his own project. He also discusses his approach to improvising, how "centering" the groove helped him with his own music, and more. We also jam on a few riffs together.Wayne has many records out - from his debut "Signals" to the classic "Two Drink Minimum", captured live at the 55 bar, to "Good Piranha, Bad Piranha", they all are different and fresh. He was the curator of his Roots and Blues series at Brooklyns National Sawdust bringing in CeDell Davis, Robben Ford, David Grissom, and composer Mikel Rouse. Jeff is currently recording a record with Robben Ford. Jeff has been obsessed with the instrument for as long as he can remember. Having and older brother and sister, his first guitar heroes were Brian May and David Gilmour. Jeff quickly discovered Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Rainbow, Ozzy Osbourne, and other heavy band and found his stride. That era was the heyday of electric guitar and was an extremely exciting period for the instrument. After high-school Jeff joined NY metal band Hades opening for Anthrax, and King Diamond. After unceremoniously getting the boot for smiling too much on stage, Jeff enrolled at the Berklee College of Music and hit his stride and is still friends with many of the musicians he met there. Shortly after Berklee Jeff moved to NYC and studied with Mike Stern and Wayne Krantz for a short time. He joined NY rap/rock/funk/fusion band Liquid Hips and started touring Europe. At the same time Jeff was developing his own trio with a steady gig at NYs legendary 55 Bar. He added a singer and formed blues rock band Flytrap and became a staple in nyc. Jeff recorded his first solo Cd Im Tired featuring Ric Fierabracci, Kip Reed, Hari Ganglberger, and Walter Fischbacher. Jeff discovered he enjoyed teaching as much as he did playing when he was hired by the National Guitar Workshop, as their youngest teacher. He also found it to be a more steady income than many of his touring buddies. At the NGW Jeff got to jam with many of his heroes and formed relationships that last to this day. Jeff embraced technology early by teaching online when Skype was launched. He also joined the TrueFire roster when the company was in its early phases and has become one of their most popular and best selling instructors. Man, am I ever a lucky guy. Keith Carlock has been one of my drumming heroes for many years. Ever since I saw the 1999 Marciac Jazz Festival video on YouTube, featuring Keith, Wayne Krantz, and Tim Levebre, I have been a big fan of these musicians. That video had a very profound effect on me as a young musician who was trying to find something new that I would connect with for the rest of my musical life. Since then, I have wandered cyberspace to find other examples of Keith’s playing in that context that I could also connect with but unfortunately, high fidelity content featuring Keith online is not in abundance. This is one of the big reasons I was excited to see Keith perform and teach his concepts at Drumeo. To witness that in person was a pleasure of the highest order. Moreover, to interview such a modern legend in the Drumeo studio was something I never EVER thought would ever be in my future. So first and foremost, I owe an enormous thank you to the wonderful team at Drumeo for this opportunity and to Keith for giving me his undivided attention and time after a full day of filming lessons at Drumeo.   Keith Carlock is a favorite of mine because he has such a firm grasp of having a distinct sound. In addition to that, he has managed to forge an incredibly nice career for himself too. Working with such acts as Steely Dan, Toto, James Taylor, Oz Noy, Wayne Krantz, Sting, and John Mayer to name a few. He also released his own instructional DVD through Hudson Music titled The Big Picture: Phrasing, Improvisation, Style, and Technique. Over the years he has also received many accolades through the Modern Drummer’s readers poll, managing to win a few and make it to the top three in several categories many times over. Too many drummers, Keith is held in high regard for his smooth delivery, musical style, and untouchable groove. Can You Unlearn?   Keith studied at North Texas State University in their acclaimed jazz program in the early ’90s. Taught by Ed Soph, Keith went to the University of North Texas to learn jazz. It would prove to be nearly impossible to consume and digest all of the materials covered in school. Keith sat upon that material for a few years to process what he had taken in.   There also came a point where Mr. Soph approached Keith’s mother to inform her that he felt that Keith no longer had to continue his studies. Ed felt that Keith would be just fine if he stopped going.  I suppose it is fair to say that Mr. Soph possessed some exceptional foresight.   At one point in the interview, I asked Keith if he ever wished that he could unlearn some of the stuff he learned in school. This curiosity spawned because of a very interesting point made by Mark Guiliana on episode 108 of DrumeoGab. Mark had declared that while school was great, sometimes he kind of missed how he used to play before he learned all of this stuff in school. This point of view struck me as a very interesting point made in that interview with Mark.     Keith had said that he went to school to learn and be a sponge. How he characterized his sound has much to do with the time spent with guitarist, Wayne Krantz. It is how I found Keith originally, after all. Keith regards those early years in NYC, specifically with Krantz, as the years that he really found his sound. That must have been amazing times for Keith. If you watch any of their stuff, you will notice the wonderful mix of searching for the high and getting there. Wayne  with Tim and Keith at the 55 bar playing their asses off is something I wish I could have seen when they were playing there all the time. Time Away From Home   Keith is a father and a husband — and a musician. Being a musician seems to be both isolating and social, which seems like a dichotomy. When your life also encompasses your family and friends, I have to think about how the pleasure of the road changes. I would personally find that very challenging. For any small length of time that I have been away from my family, I end up missing them quickly and I find that it takes a day or two to adjust when I return home. I can imagine how difficult long periods of time for touring drummers would be when their family is at home. Like anything, people adapt and find their ways to make it work though.    Todd Sucherman had said in episode 101, he just slides into the groove that is happening and adjusts to them. Time away from loved ones will always be hard though. It is the life a musician chooses to live. It is one of those sacrifices, if you do in fact see it that way.    I want to share a quick story. This is abrupt, but hang in there. This is a great perspective I was given by a stranger that applies to this.   While I was staying in Abbotsford at the Sandman hotel, I popped outside for a bit of fresh air and found myself having a nearly forty-minute conversation with someone who was also staying at the hotel. He was a European man, middle-aged, who was in town because he and his team set up the scoring system screens for horse racing tracks. I can’t remember all of the details of his job, but what I do recall was the fact that he and his team spend upwards of 300 days per year on the road. His name was Tom.   Tom told me an amazing story about how he was a musician in Europe during his teens and into his twenties. He became quite popular in Germany and other parts of Europe with his music. He got into electronica towards the end of his music career and had the best management in Europe handling his act at the time. This same management was working for Sigfried Fischbacher. Yes, the world-renowned magician. Well, as it turns out, Tom and Sigfried became very good friends. Sigfried eventually told Tom that he should incorporate magic into his musical show to bedazzle his audience and add something that no one was doing at the time.   Eventually, Tom’s act became solely a magic show. He bought a caravan and toured all over Europe performing his magic. He eventually gave that up and began this gig with the scoreboard systems. This is, of course, the cliffs notes version of the story he told me but there was something very interesting that he talked to me about.    A perspective that helped me understand a lot more about what some musicians who tour for most of their lives might go through. Tom had said that after a week at home, as much as he loved his home (which he showed me a picture of on his phone and it is absolutely lovely looking) he gets very antsy after a week. Willie Nelson comes to mind.    What I was getting from Tom was that even though he did miss home when he was away, he was just so used to the life of being in different, far away places all the time. Tom began touring very young. So, really -- it is all he knows. He probably feels more at home on the road than at home. Starting late with a career that involves travel might be a totally different story for some people. I just find this idea of detachment from a physical home base really fascinating about musicians, or any entertainment based careers.   I wonder how many musicians began playing an instrument because of the appeal of potentially touring? Could that be why some musicians began playing? This is why I think some people are built for the road. There must be so many costs and perks to touring. The adventure! I mean, c’mon, when you are young it would be amazing! This must be a dream for a person who is, other than to him/herself and music, not committed to anything too significant. Pack up and go whenever you want. Eventually though, I think it is hard to not notice the pressure to conform to adult society. House, married, stable job, financial freedom, kid(s) and on it goes.   I am bringing this up because I know some musicians that never really settled down. When you are young it must be fun, but it seems lonely when you’re older. Props to any musician that has a family at home and with the support of their spouse, manages to find a routine or norm within their family unit. Just something to create some stability. That mustn’t come easy. The thing we love isn’t easily compatible with the idea of settling down. IF, you want to make it your life.   Finding Your Voice   I see a lot of chatter online, and I am certain it has been discussed within this podcast before, that we as musicians need to learn as many styles as possible in order to establish a more reliable career. Before I continue, I do not disagree with this at all because it has been stated many times by many industry professionals. But the quality of that message is determined by how it is interpreted. It could be possible that the wrong approach to this idea leads to a generic sound. Even with a generic sound, as long as the drumming is tight, and you have yourself put together professionally, that could be just fine. However, I still feel like there is something to be said for recognizable musicians.   So I asked Keith what he thought about this, after basically answering my own question, and he made a very good point in particular. He used an example of some African music that he was asked to perform once where the artists sang the parts for him to play, which was very helpful he had mentioned. Keith wasn’t born in Africa, nor did he grow up there with their music, so there is a limit to the authenticity. He managed to play the music and they actually called him back even though he may not have been the most ideal musician to play the music.    But the most important thing he had said in regards to all of this, in my opinion, was that with any musical style it is important to find your voice in it. What is it that you can connect with and project your true self through the music? This is such a cool point I think. Not just the notes, but the attitude, the spirit, creativity, and flow. I think this is a strong point made by Keith that should be considered by everyone when they get called to perform. How can you inject your voice into something pre-existing and let your sound be heard without taking anything away from the music?   To Conclude   This opportunity to speak with one of my heroes is one that I will never forget and certainly a highlight with this podcast. Keith is an incredibly nice guy. What is nice is when you meet one of your heroes and they turn out to be a person that you really like. It was a very important and special time that I will be telling my kid about one day. So, I hope that you enjoy some good vibes and the thoughts of a truly great player in this episode. Apologies for some background noise and a few jump cuts, the location based recording wasn't quite as clean as hoped! I caught up with Kevin while he was down under with FORQ and recorded this interview by his hotel pool. After 15 years on the Atlanta music scene, bassist Kevin Scott is expanding his musical and geographic reach. In the last year, he has toured and recorded with Jimmy Herring and John McLaughlin’s “Meeting of the Spirits,” Wayne Krantz, FORQ, and Matador Soul Sounds. Kevin’s creative spirit and instinctual, groove-driven playing have made him a must-have on many exciting and unique projects. Although his itinerary has him travelling more than ever with no signs of slowing, he remains a musical pillar in Atlanta, where he has been a member of multiple bands including Ruby Velle & The Soulphonics and King Baby, and hosts the long-standing Tuesday jam session at Elliot St. Pub; an improvised, no-holds-barred weekly summit of musicians from all genres and backgrounds. There is much to look forward to in 2018 and beyond…European tours with FORQ, Wayne Krantz, Matador!, and Donny McCaslin, U.S. and international dates with Jimmy Herring, and the release of a Jimmy Herring/John McLaughlin live album recorded last fall in San Francisco.

Between Snarky Puppy’s recent captivating pair of Atlanta shows, Rob and Seth chatted with its founder (who just won a Grammy for Culcha Vulcha) and co-founder of the GroundUP Music label, Michael League. This label’s truly unique, annual and independent GroundUP Music Festival in Miami Beach, Florida is an extension of the group’s ethos, so it is discussed first. We learn about how they chose to hold the fest in Miami Beach and about the challenges and rewards of running a festival at which shining a light on truly brilliant artists is more important than ticket sales. Michael also talks about how his producing work has become increasingly diverse and he tells stories specifically about working with Eliades Ochoa (Buena Vista Social Club) and David Crosby. Michael talks about how his playing has been influenced by Jaco Pastorius and Wayne Krantz, and he goes on to reveal why he has evidenced such loyalty to musicians and other peers who have been with him and the band for years. We also get a window into his process creating music to execute with Metropole Orkest, collaborating with Jules Buckley (he “plugged the music into the score”) all of which landed the band one of their Grammy’s for Sylva. Michael also touches on the writing process for Snarky Puppy, one which often involves a slew of extremely talented musicians, and he talks about how the band’s live shows remain cohesive despite their rotating line-ups and tendency to improvise. He also touches on his other band, Bokanté, and what the future holds for them. The ever-effusive League elaborates on many other topics and the episode ends with live versions of Snarky Puppy performing “Tarova” and GroundUP’s latest amazing artist Alina Engibaryan singing “We Are,” each from a recent Atlanta show. The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

Nate Wood is a drummer, bassist, guitarist, singer-songwriter, mixing and mastering engineer. Raised and educated in Los Angeles, he joined the band Kneebody in 2001 (along with former Third Story guest Ben Wendel).  Eventually Nate moved to New York where he has been a fixture on the scene for years, working as both drummer and bassist for the likes of Donny McCaslin and Wayne Krantz. In fact, it was Nate’s love of the music Krantz was making that helped to motivate him to move east.  Nate is an extraordinarily gifted, natural musician. Although in recent years he has started to gain notoriety among musicians and hardcore fans, he’s still (in my opinion) greatly underappreciated, particularly as a drummer. But that’s starting to change now, in part due to his new project “Four” which features Nate playing drums, bass, keyboards and singing simultaneously.  Here he talks about why screwing around is so important to creativity, what’s so special about 83bpm as a tempo, what ever happened to swing, and that ongoing Third Story question: should I move to LA? Because he’s so multifaceted, this interview is filled with Nate saying “but that’s a whole other conversation….”  The episode features a short introduction from me and Nate’s old pal, pianist Randy Ingram. It’s a great one. Enjoy.  Thanks for listening. If you enjoy it, please leave a review on iTunes and consider supporting the podcast on Patreon!
