During the Second World War, the Home Intelligence Unit—a branch of the Ministry of Information—was tasked with monitoring public attitudes on the home front. They compiled confidential reports on the state of popular morale, which were circulated among decision-makers in Whitehall. These reports offer a fascinating insight into how ordinary people coped with the stresses of wartime life, their hopes for victory, and their fears about what the post-war world might bring. Joining me today is Jeremy Crang, Professor of Modern British History at the University of Edinburgh. Together with his late colleague, Paul Addison, Jeremy has edited three volumes of these reports (Our People's War, The Spirit of the Blitzand Listening to Britain), bringing to light the voices and concerns of wartime Britain. patreon.com/ww2podcast

Jesus Followers Can Influence and Lead a Return to God by Our People, Churches, and Nation Through the “Five Exhortations” MESSAGE SUMMARY: In the Bible, you can find five exhortations, from the God, that are right on point for our times of uncertainty in America: 1) Do not fear; 2) Continue to tithe; 3) Get out of debt; 4) Help our brothers and sisters in need; and 5) Pray. The people in Malachi's day were withholding what was God's, and they were paying a price. But even in those conditions of the nation's sin and faithlessness, God said to the nation, in Malachi 3:7, “From the days of your fathers you have turned aside from my statutes and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you, says the LORD of hosts. But you say, ‘How shall we return?'.”. God does not change – God today is the same faithful Creator of the Universe as He was in the time of Malachi. Return to God, both as individuals and as a nation; and see how God will bless us! TODAY'S PRAYER: Forgive me, Father, for at times treating you as if you were my personal assistant or secretary. Your ways are unsearchable and beyond understanding. Help me to put my trust in you and not in my circumstances. In your presence, I am silenced. In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 87). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, because of I am filled with the Holy Spirit, I will not be controlled by my Despair. Rather, I will walk in the Spirit's fruit of Joy. “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22f). Episode 4: Uncles Visit the StudioThe day is finally here! Our Uncles join us in the podcast studio! And just like our Auntie episode, our time with our Uncles extended beyond our normal episode length. While we could have broken this episode into 2, we decided to keep this conversation together. The Uncles had many stories to tell, wisdom to share, and community resources to talk about! The Aunties/Hosts (Lauren, Lisa, and Saige) gathered in the podcast studio to welcome two very special Uncles Chris Newell (Passamaquoddy) and Ralph Cammack (Maliseet). These two Uncles are leaders in education, service, and culture. They are both full of love and wisdom. The Uncles take us on a journey where they share their childhood dreams, mentors, and experiences as indigenous boys growing up in both indigenous and non-indigenous communities. We learn from the Uncles that career paths are sometimes clear and often murky. The importance of mentorship, sharing culture and story are highlighted throughout this important conversation. The Aunties and Uncles talk about the difficulty indigenous and students of color face when entering academia and reaching for academic success. While the difficulty is shared, Chris and Ralph also share numerous resources with our listeners (found in the show notes). The Aunties encourage all to look and dig in more. In this episode and all future episodes, you will experience indigenous languages spoken, Wabanaki culture celebrated, and healing happening through conversations and love. After our People lived 430 years next to the Nile River - a four thousand mile source of always-flowing fresh, drinkable water -God led us into a terrifying desert: "The Tzin Wilderness." It was a landscape appearing void of water, food, and safety. Then, Miriam the prophetess died, so our leadership team was down from 3 to 2. Our People were being tested to the limit of their endurance. What can we learn from the Torah's record of this season in our history? A great deal, indeed. Let's dig in.

Resurrection Changes… 1. Our Perspective 2. Our Preaching 3. Our People
ABOVE ALL ELSE #14Hey Friend- Over the past 13 episodes in this ABOVE ALL ELSE Lent series, we've addressed a number of potential idols to let go of that many of us struggle with in both our lives + businesses…Our Busyness. Our Comfort + Control. Our Self-sufficiency. Our People-pleasing. Our Success + Work. Our Security + Wealth. Our Stuff + Dwelling. Our Body Image + Appearance. Our Relationship Expectations. Our Passions + Pleasure. Our Perfectionism. Have you noticed a common thread that ties them all together as things that can easily blur the line between a good thing and god-thing? I'll give you a HINT, it has something to do with where you LOOK. In this last episode of the series, we're NOT gonna add one more idol to the list, cuz undoubtedly there will be MANY MORE ways you will be tempted to MISDIRECT your WORSHIP toward something other than God…Instead we're going to look at the 3 TOOLS God already gave us as His daughters to not only dethrone our current idols, but also to keep an UNDIVIDED HEART that loves Him ABOVE ALL ELSE for the rest of our lives. You ready to pick up these TOOLS with me today? Good, cuz you and me both got some idols to GET OFF (and keep off) the thrones of our hearts.I pray this blesses, challenges and moves you to action!L.Y.L.A.S. (Love Ya Like A Sis)LissaP.S. Dr. Misha Galperin is the President and CEO of The Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History. Misha is a Jewish American immigrant whose family fled Ukraine when he was a teenager. He has spent his long career leading Jewish organizations, including the Jewish Agency for Israel. He also serves as an advisor to Combat Antisemitism Movement and contributed to the White House task force that informed its National Strategy to Counter Antisemitism. A clinical psychologist by training, he also worked with refugees early in his career. The escalating situation on college campuses, including Cornell (he currently has a son enrolled at Cornell University, which recently experienced death threats against Jewish students) The role that Museums and other trusted institutions can and do play in combating antisemitism SPECIAL PODCAST SERIES PUTS JEWISH FUTURE FRONT AND CENTERThe Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History Partners with Tablet's Unorthodox Podcast to Share Ideas from its 2023 Conference PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (February 27, 2024) – Today, Tablet's Unorthodox podcast will launch a special six-part series, “Jewish Priorities: Life after 10/7,” in collaboration with the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History (The Weitzman) in Philadelphia. The Weitzman's Jewish Priorities Conference, held mere weeks after the horrific attack on Israel by Hamas terrorists, sought to kick off a global conversation and bring together some of the most distinguished Jewish leaders and thinkers worldwide in the U.S. for meaningful conversations about the future of the Jewish people, religion, identity, American Jews, the Holocaust, Israel, and many more topics. Now, Unorthodox will air six of the most compelling sessions in its special series. “Bringing these voices together during the most challenging time in recent history for Jews worldwide was a natural extension of the Museum's mission to unleash the power of education as an antidote to antisemitism,” said Dr. Misha Galperin, President and CEO of The Weitzman. “With this podcast series, these ideas will reach a wide audience and become part of the worldwide conversation on the Jewish people, antisemitism, and Israel.” The podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon, TabletMag.com, or wherever you get your podcasts. “Jewish history, if you think about it, is really just a series of contentious revelatory and absolutely essential conversations,” said Tablet's Liebovitz. “These conversations became even more prescient after October 7, 2023, and with Jewish Priorities we have the privilege of hearing from some of the most astute and insightful thinkers out there. They may not always agree and they may not always have the answers but they ask all the right questions.” Unorthodox is the universe's leading Jewish podcast. Each week, hosts Stephanie Butnick, Liel Leibovitz, and Joshua Malina discuss Jewish people, news, and ideas. The conference and subsequent podcast were inspired by the fall 2023 release of “Jewish Priorities: Sixty-five Proposals for the Future of Our People,” (Wicked Son) an anthology edited by David Hazony. Established in 1976, The Weitzman is the only museum in the nation dedicated exclusively to exploring, preserving, and interpreting the nearly four centuries of American Jewish history from the dawn of our nation to the present day. The Jewish Priorities Conference, held October 22, 2023, signified a pivotal moment for The Weitzman, as it embraces the role of a nationwide leader and convener of Jewish thought leadership. The Museum is building upon this thought leadership work in 2024 with co-presented antisemitism lectures series with University of Pennsylvania and Gratz College, an upcoming conversation with New York Times best-selling author Yossi Klein Halevi, and the nationwide effort it leads for Jewish American Heritage Month. ABOUT THE WEITZMAN NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AMERICAN JEWISH HISTORYEstablished in 1976, and situated on Philadelphia's Independence Mall, the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History is the only museum in the nation dedicated exclusively to exploring and interpreting the American Jewish experience. The Weitzman presents educational programs and experiences that preserve, explore, and celebrate the history of Jews in America. Standing as a joyful bulwark against antisemitism, bigotry, and hate, The Weitzman serves to connect Jews more closely to their heritage and to inspire in people of all backgrounds a greater appreciation for the diversity of the American Jewish experience and the freedoms to which Americans aspire. www.theweitzman.org Tune in 10 AM - 12 PM EST weekdays on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT; or on the Audacy app!
Prince Andrei wakes up for a big day – for he has an invitation to a royal reception before Francis II, the Holy Roman Emperor. Francis will be the final person holding this title, after a near-1000 year run governing Central Europe. Vienna was often the seat of government but so were areas in the modern-day Check Republic, such as Brünn. German was the common tongue and the center of power was basically wherever the Emperor decided to be.Andrei is dressed in ceremonial uniform and enters Bilibin's study, where Bilibin is holding court with fellow Russian diplomats, including Hippolyte Kuragin. This clique calls themselves Les Nôtres (“Our People”) and are more interested in vain pursuits than public service. This is Tolstoy's subtle comment on the merits of said profession. Tolstoy had notable diplomats as well as military figures in his aristocratic family.Hippolyte quickly became the object of ridicule for his inability to convey a competent thought as well as his lack of acumen with women. It is clear he obtained his station from family connections rather than merit. Bilibin sarcastically labels Hippolyte "Demosthenes," one of the great Athenian orators. Hippolyte laughs it off but knows enough to become distressed.Les Nôtres were happy to open their group to Andrei, who chatted for a spell, but quickly left for the reception. Bilibin wished to entertain Andrei in Brünn but sees the Prince is about his business. With regard to Andrei's upcoming meeting with Francis, Bilibin advices: "Audiences are his passion but he doesn't like talking himself and never has a word to say, as you will find out."

1948 was a landmark year in international politics. It saw the establishment of modern Israel. And it saw the General Assembly of the United Nations adopt the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. That document, recognized today as a foundation stone of international human-rights law, gives voice to a range of fundamental rights meant to honor human freedom and dignity. At the time, many of the proponents of human-rights statements and organizations were not only Jewish but proud Zionists. In the seventy-five years since, those two sorts of commitments seem to have grown in different directions, so that now, most people who work in the human-rights industry do not support but actively oppose the foundational premises and practical necessities of Jewish national freedom. Hillel Neuer is the executive director of UN Watch, a human-rights organization based in Geneva. Together in conversation with Mosaic editor Jonathan Silver, he asks several pressing questions about this history, which he wrote about as a chapter in the new volume Jewish Priorities: Sixty-Five Proposals for the Future of Our People, published by Wicked Son. How did the human-rights movement and Israel start together? How did they grow apart? Can the human-rights movement change course, so that it can still highlight violations of human-rights law without falling prey to the obsession with Israel that today undermines its credibility? Musical selections in this podcast are drawn from the Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, op. 31a, composed by Paul Ben-Haim and performed by the ARC Ensemble.
Rabbi David Wolpe, Bret Stephens, Dara Horn, Einat Wilf, and a number of other contributors to David Hazony's new book, Jewish Priorities: Sixty-Five Proposals for the Future of Our People, share their perspectives on what the community needs most at this critical moment, and how their views have and have not shifted since the outbreak of Israel's war with Hamas. A program of the Temple Emanu-El Streicker Center, hosted by Liel Leibovitz and Stephanie Butnick of Tablet's Unorthodox podcast.

Authors Joy E. Rancatore and Mea Smith continue season five's extra candid format in an episode about sacrifice. They discuss people's natural aversion to the word as well as the importance of it and how it ties into a creative's life and art. As with many other introspective topics, asking “What will you sacrifice for your art?” requires a balancing act. Joy and Mea share a few of their tendencies to tip to one extreme or another and some practical steps they have taken or are taking to avoid such imbalance. Throughout the discussion, the authors weave in ways creatives can prepare themselves to answer the question, “What will you sacrifice for your art?” Check out this link referenced in the show: We Can Do Hard Things Podcast with Dr. Brené Brown, Episode 48, “How to Know Ourselves and Be Known by Our People”: https://shows.cadence13.com/podcast/wcdht/episodes/e77b5152-0180-4a59-8540-d8aa59e73c94 Subscribe to the QWERTY's monthly newsletter (be sure to click the box next to “opt in to receive news and updates” and check your spam for the confirmation email): https://landing.mailerlite.com/webforms/landing/z9f1z5 Follow on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/qwertywritinglife Follow on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/qwertywritinglife/ Intro music created and performed by Brent Smith. What do we do now? Many Jews, all over the world, are asking themselves that question during these difficult weeks. Israelis are asking: What do we do now – to rebuild our land, our towns, our kibbutzim, our broken lives? What does it mean to maintain hope in the Jewish future? A new book -- "Jewish Priorities: Sixty-Five Proposals for the Future of Our People" -- offers its readers numerous answers to those complex questions. This is an amazing, unnerving, and challenging book. It brings together a remarkable array of new essays from across the Jewish world. An unprecedented, large-scale collection of timely and provocative essays from a wide range of Jewish thought leaders that aims to start a global conversation among Jews about their future as a people.
TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, because of I am filled with the Holy Spirit, I will not be controlled by my Self-Centeredness. Rather, I will walk in the Spirit's fruit of Love. “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22f). Born in Oklahoma, Anita Fields is a contemporary Native American multi-disciplinary artist of Osage heritage. She is known for her works which combine clay and textile with Osage knowledge systems. Fields explores the intricacies of cultural influences at the intersections of balance and chaos found within our existence, explaining that “The power of transformation is realized by creating various forms of clothing, coverings, landscapes, and figures. The works become indicators of how we understand our surroundings and visualize our place within the world.” In this way, the early Osage concepts of duality, such as earth and sky, male and female, are represented throughout her work. Her sculptures have been featured in many solo and group exhibitions, including the 2020-2021 Weaving History Into Art; The Enduring Legacy of Shan Goshorn, Gilcrease Museum, Form and Relation: Contemporary Native Ceramics, Hood Museum, Dartmouth College, the 2018-2020 Hearts of Our People, Minneapolis Institute of Art, and the 2018 Art for A New Understanding: Native Voices, 1950's to Now at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Her work was also included Who Stole the Teepee? at the National Museum of the American Indian, Smithsonian, New York, and the 1997 Legacy of Generations: Pottery by American Indian Women at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington DC., Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Arkansas. Her work can be found in several collections, such as the Museum of the American Indian, Smithsonian, the Museum of Art and Design, New York City, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Dartmouth College, New Hampshire, and the Heard Museum, Arizona. Fields was a 2017-2019 fellow with the Kaiser Foundation Tulsa Artist Fellowship program and is currently a 2020-2023 Tulsa Artist Fellowship Integrated Arts Grant awardee. Fields was the invited artist for the 2021 Eiteljorg Museum of Contemporary Art Fellowship. Fields was recently named a 2021 National Endowment of the Arts Heritage Fellow and a 2021 Anonymous Was A Woman award. In 2022 she received a Francis J Greenburger award. Our People: Discovering Lithuania's Hidden Holocaust (Rowman & Littlefield, 2020) traces the quest for the truth about the Holocaust in Lithuania by two ostensible enemies: Rūta a descendant of the perpetrators, Efraim a descendant of the victims. Rūta Vanagaite, a successful Lithuanian writer, was motivated by her recent discoveries that some of her relatives had played a role in the mass murder of Jews and that Lithuanian officials had tried to hide the complicity of local collaborators. Efraim Zuroff, a noted Israeli Nazi hunter, had both professional and personal motivations. He had worked for years to bring Lithuanian war criminals to justice and to compel local authorities to tell the truth about the Holocaust in their country. The facts that his maternal grandparents were born in Lithuania and that he was named for a great-uncle who was murdered with his family in Vilnius with the active help of Lithuanians made his search personal as well. Our People exposes the significant role in implementing the Final Solution played by local political leaders and the prewar Lithuanian administration that remained in place during the Nazi occupation. It also tackles the sensitive issue of the motivation of thousands of ordinary Lithuanians who were complicit in the murder of their Jewish neighbors. At the heart of the book, these are the issues that Rūta and Efraim discuss, debate, and analyze as they crisscross the country to visit dozens of Holocaust mass murder sites in Lithuania and neighboring Belarus. This book follows them on their remarkable journey as they search for neglected graves, interview eyewitnesses, and uncover hints of the rich life that had existed in hundreds of Jewish communities throughout Lithuania.
