STORY QUESTIONS: How To Unlock Your Story One Question At A Time https://payhip.com/b/ZTvq9 Watch the video version of this podcast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44Ef6XtYdl8 Jesse Harris started his filmmaking career early, writing and directing his first feature when he was 17. He opted against college and used the money to fund his feature that he wrote and directed, which was eventually picked up for US theatrical distribution and by HBO Europe. In 2007, to support other young filmmakers, Jesse founded NFFTY (National Film Festival for Talented Youth), which has grown into the largest and most prestigious youth film festival in the world. Jesse put his filmmaking career on hold for several years to support other young directors and build a premier showcase for aspiring directors. Variety named Jesse one of 25 talents who transformed youth entertainment and was named one of City Arts Magazine's Top 50 Culture Makers. His feature was shortlisted for the 2004 Independent Spirit Awards 'Someone to Watch' Award and was one of 20 features invited to the 2004 IFP New York Film Market. Jesse's recently been named a Global Shaper, an initiative of the World Economic Forum, built around young entrepreneurs and do-gooders. Jesse returned to filmmaking in the commercial world, now bringing years of experience crafting beautiful stories for brands. His commercial work has been seen on TV around the world, working with clients such as Volvo, Microsoft, Disney and more. His 2018 short film, Wind in the Night was one of seven films selected for the 2019 Prix SNCF du Polar in France and picked up for distribution in France, Asia, UK and USA. The film was a proof of concept for his next feature, Borrego (available January 14, 2022). The Making of I'M WIDE AWAKE, IT'S MORNING by Bright Eyes - featuring Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis

For the 20th anniversary of the sixth Bright Eyes album, I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning, we take a detailed look at how it was made. Conor Oberst began Bright Eyes in 1995 in Omaha, Nebraska as an outlet for his solo material that he had been writing as a teenager. He formed a partnership with Saddle Creek Records, a label founded by his brother Justin Oberst and Mike Mogis and began releasing his albums in 1998, starting with A Collection of Songs Written and Recorded 1995–1997. Later that year, he released Letting Off the Happiness, which marked his first collaboration with Mike Mogis. Fevers and Mirrors was released in 2000 and Lifted or The Story Is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground followed in 2002. At this point, Conor moved to New York City and began writing the songs that would make up his next two albums. I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning and Digital Ash in a Digital Urn were eventually released on the same day in 2005. In this episode, Conor Oberst describes how moving to a New York as a midwestern transplant gave him a fresh perspective and brought a sense of romanticism to the songs he was writing. He also talks about a political awakening that he experienced after George W. Bush was elected and 9/11 happened. Connecting with musicians in New York inspired him musically as he began incorporating jazz elements and decided to embrace a minimal 70s folk sound for this record. Longtime Bright Eyes producer and band member Mike Mogis describes how they ended up making the record back in Nebraska but invited some new people to the sessions, including musicians from New York like Jesse Harris and Tim Luntzel. He also talks about the stripped down approach they used for this record and how he felt insecure about not relying on the studio tricks they had used for past records. By recording live with a small group of people and making the record in a very short amount of time, he discusses how this change suited the material Conor was writing. From a turbulent plane ride on the way to make the record to a creative burst in Conor's songwriting to working on two very different records simultaneously to sparse arrangements and musical jokes to the shot in the dark of asking Emmylou Harris to sing backup, we'll hear the stories of how the album came together.

Jesse Harris belongs to a generation of New York singer songwriters who came of age in the late nineties. He has made over 20 solo albums that walk the line between folk, jazz, pop, Brazilian and art rock. He's also a much sought after co writer and collaborator who has written songs for and or with many others like Madeleine Peyroux, Melody Gardot, Lana del Rey, and most famously Norah Jones.  Jesse was already well into his career when he met a young Norah Jones on a road trip through Texas and played his songs for her. He had already been signed and dropped from a major label with his band Once Blue (a project he started with Rebecca Martin, and which also featured musicians Ben Street, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Kenny Wollesen), and had already been exploring a space in his songwriting that played in between jazz and pop.  But that chance encounter with Jones, who was still a student at the University of North Texas at the time, was the one that would change the course of Jesse's career. They stayed in touch and began working together when Jones eventually moved to New York.  Her debut album, 2002's Come Away With Me contained five of his songs including the now ubiquitous standard “Don't Know Why”. He also played guitar on the record. Their partnership has endured over the years - Jones and Harris have written together on and off ever since then - but it was that first record that arguably redirected the sound of certain strains of popular music and jazz for a generation.  The success of Come Away With Me also opened new doors for Harris as a solo artist and a composer. Ultimately he started a label (Secret Sun, named after a solo album of the same name) to put out the projects that he produced for himself and others, and recently has been dividing his time between New York and Paris. Jesse is a relentlessly prolific songwriter, someone for whom songs are like air and water; they are simply a fact of life.  Here he talks about Paper Flower, his most recent album recorded in Paris with American and French musicians, his approach to songwriting (“writer's block is a choice”) and production, taking things as they come, confession versus craft, venturing into the unconscious, and whether it is his fate to work with female artists.  www.third-story.com https://www.wbgo.org/podcast/the-third-story

I love hosting songwriters on the radio and when it is an artist I have a personal kinship and history with…even better.  I was introduced to Jesse Harris and the Gypsy Sparrows shortly after I started my broadcast career in 2010.  The Sparrows were a hard driving, good time honky tonk/outlaw country/red dirt band for ten years. Jesse took a break when his son Jack was born and has been helping to support a growing family and successful landscaping business for the last 7or 8 years. As you will hear in this conversation during a recent appearance on KKFI's MidCoast Live Radio Show, Jesse and I share some great memories and from the sound of what's in the hopper, great new musical memories are to be made with his new project…  Jesse Thomas Harris and the Murder of Crows.  I loved learning Jesse caught the music bug as a teenager listening to the blues at KC's landmark Blues institution…BB's Lawnside BBQ.   My main take away was that Jesse plans to stay close to home and nurture and share his musical chops right here in the Heartland.  Welcome back my friend!  Enjoy this spirited and engaging in studio conversation and performance with Kansas City's own Jesse Thomas Harris.

With 20 albums under his own name and his instrumental group Cosmo, the man knows how to make a record. He is a wildly accomplished and successful songwriter. For example in 2003 Harris he received the Grammy Award for Song Of The Year for Norah Jones' breakout hit “Don't Know Why,” from her debut album, Come Away With Me, which has sold almost 30 million copies worldwide. Versions of his songs have been sung by artists as diverse as Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Cat Power, Feist, The Black Keys, M. Ward, Brad Mehldau, Bright Eyes, Smokey Robinson, George Benson, Pat Metheny, Kandace Springs, and Solomon Burke. I mean WHAT a list that is! Songwriting collaborations have included Maya Hawke, John Zorn, Madeleine Peyroux, Melody Gardot, Papooz, and Lana Del Rey. If you didnt think you knew Jesse, I bet you've heard his writing out there in the known universe of sound and by gosh he's a real potent force. Even after all this success, he is very mild mannered and thoughtful in this nice rambling interview. He's generous with his knowledge and a very easy guy to get along with. I must say I hang my pod head slightly when reflecting on how old this interview is. Like a fine wine, I hope it's benefited from a little time in the digital cellar. Drink in the wisdoms y'all !

But despite his early songwriting mega-success, Jesse is a tireless and methodical worker who lives by the motto "the only ritual I have is the act of working on something." Songwriter Jesse Harris has been a standout musical figure since the 1990s in New York, as a singer and guitarist, and lately as a producer. When his friend Norah Jones swept up all the Grammys back in 2003, it was for an album featuring five of Jesse's songs, including his Grammy winning song of the year “Don't Know Why”; other interpreters of his songs include Willie Nelson, Smokey Robinson, and Emmylou Harris. Jesse Harris and percussionist/producer Kenny Wolleson have just birthed an unusual collection of songs called Silver Balloon, where they aimed to experiment with (and subvert) song form, play with an imaginative sound world, and maybe bend time to suit their play as they embrace unexpected chaos. Jesse Harris and percussionist Kenny Wolleson, along with the band, play some of these new songs in-studio, and tease the forthcoming instrumental record, Cosmo, of songs without words. As traditionally is done for the last session of the Band of Brothers season, today was an open microphone session, where men were called on to share their hearts and what God has done in their lives. Before the session began, a worship team consisting of Jesse Harris, Tim Hunter, Jonathan Waltemyer, and Mark Walton provided three worship songs for all of the men to join in singing and praising God. Great job! After the worship time, several men, including a few of the guys who attended the very first Band of Brothers back in 2006, stood up and talked about how their lives have been transformed and the part Band of Brothers played in that process. Thank you Jesus for Who You are and for all that You have done all of these years through Band of Brothers. Alleluia!

Jesse Harris opened the final series of the final season of Fellowship Alliance Chapel's Band of Band of Brothers breakfast ministry, "Called to Righteousness (Integrity)," by presenting, "Boaz: Who's the Kinsman Redeemer?" As Jesse pointed out, living righteously means acting in accord with divine and moral law, realizing that the standard for morality is set by God Himself. The story of Boaz, in the Bible book of Ruth, is the story of how a man did follow God and lived a life of integrity, especially in his relation with Ruth. When the closest kinsman redeemer for Naomi and her daughter-in-law Ruth refused to take on that responsibility, Boaz, who was next in line, became that kinsman redeemer and purchased the widow Naomi's land and married the widow Ruth. God blessed that marriage and Boaz became the father of Obed, who was the father of Jesse, who was the father of David; all in the family line into which Jesus was born. Jesse then challenged the men as to what each are doing with their lives to introduce the lost to the ultimate Kinsman Redeemer, Jesus Christ, who gave his live as payment in full for the sin of the world and rose from the dead bringing victory over death. As Christians, we are to be such witnesses to this dark and dying world.

Help produce Basic Folk by contributing at https://basicfolk.com/donate/LA-based singer/songwriter Amy Correia will tell you that she is not a prolific writer, which… okay maybe she doesn't write a million songs in one year, but holy crap, those songs and that voice will wallop you. Originally from Lakeville, Massachusetts, Amy's musical roots lay in New York City's lower east side in a scene that produced Jeff Buckley, Richard Julian and Jesse Harris. She discovered her musical voice while recovering from a back injury her junior year of college. She was actually a big fan of laying in bed and doing nothing but writing songs and playing around on her guitar. After college, she was playing around and got offered a major label deal, recorded an album with seven different producers and countless musicians, left her label and signed another deal, which would eventually become the place where she released her debut, Carnival Love in the year 2000. Another album followed in 2004 (fan funded) and another in 2010 (also fan funded). She opened for big acts like Chrissie Hynde, John Hiatt, Richard Thompson and Marc Cohn. She started living in Boston, fully embraced by “a collective of musicians who uplifted her with their creative camaraderie,” which included Kimon Kirk who turned out to be one of her most important friends and collaborators.Kimon encouraged Amy to record this new batch of songs on her latest release, the EP As We Are, which just came out in March 2022. During our conversation, Amy revealed that the recording session took place in 2015, but she wasn't ready to release the music until now. Kimon had persuaded her to revisit the songs during the pandemic and the plan was set in motion for the EP. We also discussed Amy's connection to spirituality, her affinity and experience in the theater world and letting go of control. She also opens up about her relationship to her singing voice, which is so special and always digs deep in me every time I hear it. I hope you enjoy this wonderful and vulnerable conversation with Amy Correia!Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Jesse Harris presented, "Onesimus: Truly ‘Useful'”, during which he explained how a runaway slave repented and turned to Christ, and then made amends by returning to Philemon from whom he had escaped. All this occurred after Onesimus, the fugitive, met Paul the Apostle in Rome and, under Paul's direction, became a follower of Jesus. As Jesse explained, just as the Holy Spirit convicted Onesimus of his sin and led him to repentance, we too need to allow that same Holy Spirit to guide us to repentance each time we sin. When we do, the Holy Spirit will give us newness of life, help us to pray, and teach us how to abide in Christ; and, as a result, He will give our lives purpose.
