Entre humidité, matériaux inadaptés et manque de financements, entretenir et restaurer ces édifices s'avère un véritable défi.  De notre correspondante à Dakar,  Chaque jour, les chaloupes venues de Dakar déversent leur flot de visiteurs sur l'île de Gorée. Ils viennent admirer ses ruelles paisibles, vestiges de l'époque coloniale. Certaines maisons datent du XVIIIe ou du XIXe siècle. Mais derrière la carte postale, de nombreux bâtiments tombent en ruine. C'est le cas de l'immense palais du gouverneur. « Les murs en pierre sont montés à la chaux. Mais quand on les répare avec du ciment, ça ne tient pas… Avec l'humidité, ça se dégrade. Et il n'y a pas d'entretien », regrette Xavier Ricou, architecte et conseiller municipal à Gorée. Beaucoup de bâtiments appartiennent à l'État qui manque de moyens pour assurer la restauration de son patrimoine. Une solution serait donc de nouer des partenariats avec des investisseurs privés. Certains aimeraient transformer le palais du gouverneur en hôtel de luxe, mais les discussions sont bloquées. « Les investisseurs demandent qu'on leur cède aussi l'ancien hôpital voisin. Mais ce bâtiment est occupé par des squatteurs qu'on ne peut pas expulser », affirme l'architecte. Xavier Ricou réclame un véritable plan de sauvegarde pour l'île de Gorée – qui figurait sur la toute première liste du patrimoine mondial de l'Unesco en 1978 – à l'image de ceux exigés aujourd'hui pour les nouveaux sites inscrits. En attendant, il restaure patiemment sa maison familiale, qui date de 1880. Annie Jouga, architecte et ancienne élue de Gorée, demande des mesures d'accompagnement de l'État pour restaurer et construire sur l'île : « Il faudrait privilégier la pierre de basalte pour les Goréens, parce que c'est obligatoire. Accompagner aussi bien au niveau du coût d'extraction qu'au niveau du coût de transport... Inciter les gens à rénover pour qu'ils aient par exemple moins d'impôts à payer. » Des projets d'appui voient malgré tout le jour : la Banque mondiale finance actuellement des remblais de pierre pour renforcer le littoral et freiner l'érosion. On Friday's Mark Levin Show, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a so-called ‘Maryland dad' was sent to an El Salvador prison and brought back to the U.S. today by AG Pam Bondi to face criminal charges. Despite evidence of his crimes, including human trafficking and domestic violence, Democrats, media, and some judges defended him, claiming Trump acted dictatorially and that Garcia lacked due process. They lied; he got due process with an immigration judge and an immigration board. Senators Chris Van Hollen and his Democrats still publicly supported him. How will we ever get this country under control given that the Democrat Party hates America?  Rep Jamie Raskin argues that even under the Alien Enemies Act, due process is necessary, referencing a D.C. Circuit judge who noted that Nazi saboteurs in the U.S. during World War II received due process hearings as a historical precedent for legal fairness. This is the example that Raskin uses? The Nazis had a trial and were executed in less than 3 months.  Also, the FBI and DHS are highlighting threats to Jewish and Israeli communities. It's interesting all the violence goes one way. You don't see Jews trying to kill Palestinians. This is what open borders and the Democrat party gets you. Afterward, there's a hit piece out on the Director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office Sergio Gor. The piece claims that Gor influenced Trump to withdraw Jared Isaacman's nomination as NASA administrator, allegedly to target Elon Musk, who recommended Isaacman. However, the withdrawal stemmed from Isaacman's donations to Democrats, including $100,000 to a Schumer-aligned PAC, $50,000 to Josh Shapiro's campaign, and other Democratic contributions, with no support for Trump until after the election. This background made Isaacman unsuitable for a key role in a Republican administration.  Later, Iran reportedly ordered thousands of tons of ballistic missile components from China, potentially enabling the production of around 800 missiles. Iran is stalling nuclear negotiations with the U.S. while bolstering its missile capabilities and supplying groups like the Houthis in Yemen.  These actions, supported by China, are efforts to undermine Israel and Western interests.  Finally, Mark honors the 81st anniversary of D-Day. The ASX 200 started the week giving back 80 points to 8158 (1%) as the bank rally faded post WBC results. Slightly underwhelming and lack of growth to blame. WBC fell 3.0% taking CBA down 1.6% and the Big Bank Basket down to $265.29 (1.7%). MQG followed the other lower down 1.8% ahead of numbers Friday. Other financials gave up early gains, with RPL and XYZ, two of the only winners. REITs also slipped led by GMG down 2.2% and MGR off 0.9% with industrials also weaker. Retail sagged, PMV down 3.4% and APE off 3.1% with MYR down 3.5%. Defensives such as TLS slid 1.1% and REA down 1.8%. Resources held up better with BHP down only 0.9% and RIO off 0.9% despite rising Iron ore prices in Singapore. Gold miners were mixed, GOR jumped 9.4% on the takeover by Goldfields, NST up 0.4% and EVN up 2.1% with BGL rallying 2.2%. Lithium stocks were flat, LYC up 1.8% and oil and gas stocks crumbling in the face of oils fall. WDS down 3.6% and STO off 4.0%. Uranium stocks mixed, NXG down 4.6% and BOE up 0.8%. In corporate news, TYR pulled out of SMP talks, PLY dumped after CEO retires wounded. RWC warned on tariffs and fell 2.4% with EDV forecasting flat to modest retail sales growth. The year of the stitch up has had a couple of misfires for Dave's picks, with Chris unfortunately declaring Cloud City's for both sword and sorcery adventures - Gor and The Barbarians. So this is the time to roll out the cult classic sci-fi movie from 1984, Trancers.Trancers was a low-budget sci-fi film produced by Charles Band's Empire Pictures, a company known for its B-movie output during the 1980s. Directed by Charles Band and written by Danny Bilson and Paul De Meo, the film was conceived as a time-traveling noir with a futuristic twist, inspired by Blade Runner and classic detective stories. The production had limited financial resources, so the filmmakers cleverly set much of the movie in present-day Los Angeles rather than the distant future, allowing them to save on costly futuristic sets and effects. The film starred Tim Thomerson as the grizzled, time-traveling cop Jack Deth and a young Helen Hunt in one of her early roles. Despite its modest budget, Trancers managed to craft a unique cyberpunk atmosphere using creative cinematography and neon-lit cityscapes.Empire Pictures, known for churning out cult classics, ensured the movie had a quick and efficient production, utilizing familiar locations and a mix of practical effects to bring its sci-fi elements to life. The film's pulpy, hard-boiled dialogue and time-travel premise helped it stand out in the crowded landscape of low-budget sci-fi, leading to a small but dedicated cult following. Trancers performed well enough on the home video market to spawn multiple sequels, solidifying its place in the annals of ‘80s cult cinema. Gor is a planet, a counter Earth, that sits in orbit at the opposite side of the Sun to the Earth we inhabit. And on the Vernal Equinox, this marks the New Year for most Gorean cities. This is the kind of sci-fi, fantasy sword and sorcery that Chris despises, and Dave loves. So it's only right that Dave's pick to see us into the new year would be Gor! But there might be a wildcard in this 1987 loose adaptation which has the review for this much maligned Canon picture going a different way. The making of Gor (1987) was a quintessential Cannon Films production—big ambitions, tiny budget, and just a dash of chaos. Helmed by Fritz Kiersch (the bloke behind Children of the Corn), the film aimed to bring John Norman's Gorseries to life. Now, Norman's books are… let's say “divisive,” so the filmmakers wisely ditched the dodgy bits and went all-in on the swords, sandals, and overly shiny chest plates. Shot in South Africa, the production made the most of the sweeping landscapes, though "epic fantasy" occasionally veered into "amateur cosplay." Still, it had that scrappy Cannon charm, the kind of vibe that screams, "This'll look brilliant on VHS!" As for the cast, it was a mixed bag. Urbano Barberini and Rebecca Ferratti led the charge, while Oliver Reed—bless him—turned up to chew scenery like it owed him money. Rumor has it Reed's off-camera antics were just as entertaining as what made it into the final cut. The costumes looked like a sale at the world's least practical armour shop, and the effects… well, let's just say they tried. Despite the shoestring budget and dodgy execution, Gor carved out a weird little niche for itself among fantasy film enthusiasts, probably because it's so delightfully bonkers. It's the sort of film you stick on late at night with a few mates and some questionable snacks, knowing full well you're in for some glorious nonsense. No hubo mejor manera de recibir el milenio y oxigenar el ambiente musical en el 2002. En la populosa barriada de Marianao, el territorio independiente del pianista, arreglista y compositor Roberto Carcassés, se comenzaba a gestar "Interactivo". El demo iniciatico del grupo veía la luz por esas fechas sumando en poco tiempo otros talentos, cada uno con caminos independientes pero bien marcados por la afinidad musical, dando mayor sentido a la premisa que durante dos décadas han continuado defendiendo en los escenarios, dentro y fuera de Cuba : "interactuar es una fuerza". Músicos y vocalistas aportando, en plena libertad, la diversidad de sus mundos creativos recorriendo corrientes tan diversas como el funky, el rock, el folk, el jazz y, por supuesto, la música popular cubana, augurando nuevos aires a las tendencias más alternativas de la isla desde lo eminentemente bailable hasta lo más conceptual, vibrando en la misma frecuencia de una audiencia que vio reflejados en parte de su repertorio los asuntos claves que aún nos lastran como nación. Insostenible la inercia social, económica y política en la isla, Roberto Carcassés replanteó "Interactivo" en Madrid, la capital española. Poco tiempo antes de emigrar vio la luz el álbum "En Fa sostenido", producción del 2022, celebrando los 20 años de la banda en la escena. Buen momento para regresar al inmenso legado de Emiliano Salvador, figura indispensable en la evolución de la pianística cubana del siglo XX. "A Puerto Padre", clásico escrito por el desaparecido genio musical, dio título en el año 2000 a una formidable producción de la etiqueta Unicornio conducida musicalmente por el maestro Juan Manuel Ceruto. Regreso a la sonoridad de los legendarios big bands cubanos. De manera notable asumió la responsabilidad interpretativa de los temas de Emiliano el jóven pianista Tony Pérez, por entonces uno de los talentos más prometedores del ámbito jazzístico. "Danza para cuatro" y "En una volanta actual" son los cortes que escogemos para seguir viaje por el catálogo sonoro de Cuba. Aprovecharemos los próximos minutos para regresar a la era dorada de la discografia independiente cubana teniendo como referente el sonido de los conjuntos soneros. El paso de los años 40 a los 50 en los catálogos de las etiquetas independientes Panart y Puchito nos devuelve el cambio de guardia que provocó la decisión del tresero Arsenio Rodríguez de trasladarse definitivamente a los Estados Unidos en 1951. El conjunto del ciego maravilloso, rebautizado con el nombre del trompetista Felix Chappotín, con un concepto rítmico y armónico más abierto y renovador, deslumbró a su fanaticada desde las producciones de Ramón Sabat y Jesús Gorís respectivamente. Volvemos a otro importante cambio de guardia en el devenir de los conjuntos soneros. Nuevamente nos valemos de los catálogos Panart y Puchito para recordar la transformación del conjunto de Ernesto Grenet en el conjunto del músico matancero Senén Suárez. Marcó la sonoridad de ambas agrupaciones el cantante cienfueguero Laíto Sureda. En 1950 la agrupación liderada por Grenet pasó a manos de Senén Suárez adoptando el nombre del guitarrista y compositor. Registros históricos que vale la pena recordar.
