We were all hanging at the Dabble House in Florida this weekend for a special episode of WATP. Opie Radio starts things off with an absolutely manic and immature stream from the basement of Gebhard's with the wildly untalented and obnoxious Ron the Waiter. Then we catch up on his morning stream where we learn that Opie Radio would be the best podcast in the Dabbleverse if he wanted it to be (if you want to know the truth). Trucker Andy and Jenny Jingles join us to find out that Opie is burning through all of his money. Lucy Tightbox and Vinnie Paulino join us to discuss JNO, a music producer who only wants to produce one song over and over again. Mike Morse and Anthony Zenhauser hop on the show to check in on Frenchie Hawna and try to figure out what's going on. Shuli joined us for the Kate Meaney Tapes season 2 segment that is only available at dabblecon.live. Matan Even had a wasted Andy Dick on his show and Jen helps break that down. And finally we finish things off a round of To Poke A Dabbler.
We start things off with the trials and tribulations of the Locked Cuck. This is a man who gets punished for making cumsies when he's not supposed to. His girlfriend doesn't even let him clean up after her bull finishes. Jodie B. from the Po'Boys Podcast joins us to discuss the difference between punishments and funishments. Scorch is celebrating his one year anniversary for some reason but also has a huge announcement about his Dive Bar Locator business. Anthony Cumia superchatted Kevin Brennan and KB lost his mind over it, trying to find an angle where Ant's new radio gig isn't a good thing. We check in on Opie's talk show from Gebhard's basement where Ron the Waiter is shot out of a cannon and Matt is the worst sidekick ever. We wrap things up with another installment of 2 Minutes with Tom, the teaser, internet news, and your voicemails. Once again -- recording on the porch of Gebhard's Beer Culture Bar located in Manhattan's Upper West Side -- BCR hosts Rebecca McKean and Alan Winson talk with the four composers and performers and leaders of Composer's Concordance about "contemporary [classic] music." This music movement has been described by the New York Times as “unpredictable … irreverent …and ingenious.” For over four decades Composer's Concordance has presented concerts in all sorts of New York City area venues of inventive experimental music.Gene Pritsker -- Milica Paranosic – Peter Jarvis – and Seth Boustead -- talk about the history of the organization, their compositions and the ongoing joy of breaking contemporary boundaries of what is considered artful music in an unstable era.For our regular listeners if you would like a link to complete versions of the music played in this program -- make a request to email barcrawlradio.comHINT: This program is best heard with a set of good headphones. Are you ready to get motivated and inspired? It doesn't matter because Chrissy Salem is going to get in your face and help you because he knows you don't have any money, you're fat, and you aren't getting laid. And what can you do to fix those things? That's the part that Chrissy never explains. Lucy Tightbox joins us to reveal Chrissy's grosser and dumber personality, Jessie Pump. Brother Ted sent in a great Stuttering John parody song and Erock found an afternoon drive DJ for the cringe of the week. Opie is back with his friends at Gebhard's and he has a pretty sweet studio set up. There is literally no difference between what Opie is doing and what Scorch is doing. Pat Dixon had Anthony Cumia on to discuss Steel Toe and Chad Zumock. Speaking of Steel Toe, he's super excited that Nick Rekieta had a setback in his felony legal case. But, at the same time, he's not getting as much money towards the goal as he did last week, so he's also stressed out. I think Aaron is bipolar. And finally Annie joins us as we try to poke a dabbler, tease the next episode, open up some gifts from listeners, read a recent review and check out your voicemails. This week we're getting caught up on the extremely famous YouTuber, idubbbz aka Ian Kane Jomha. This guy was an edgelord whose outrageous videos got him millions of viewers. Now that he's in his mid 30s, he's doing a podcast with his wife where the two of them talk about nonsense and prove how dumb they are. Anisa at one point schools her husband on who “invented” electricity. Andy Q Public and Lucy Tightbox both join the show to school us on idubbbz's history and Anisa's OnlyFans page. After a cringe of the week and the funniest thing Scorch has ever said, we check in on Tom Myers' latest batch of “jokes.” He seems to be getting worse at this. Opie was hanging with the boys at Gebhard's and reveals the creepiest fetish I've ever heard a 60 year old man admit to. Then Cardiff joins us as we check out some of the latest Stuttering John videos created by 1-800-dabbler and Sheet Shitterson. Friday night football games in the fall are a Pennsylvania tradition but more games are being scheduled on Thursday nights or Saturday afternoons because there aren't enough officials. For high school football, seven officials on the field are what's ideal, but many times five are calling the games. There's a shortage of referees or officials in other sports too like lacrosse, soccer and field hockey. On The Spark Monday was Patrick Gebhart, Assistant Executive Director of Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association who said,"The, poor treatment of officials nationally that has been ranked as the number one reason that officials retire and don't come back, after a few years, if we get an official to their third year, we feel pretty strongly that they'll continue to have a great career. But poor treatment by coaches and spectators has been the number one reason across the country, including Pennsylvania, that officials, retire." Gebhard said athletic directors are making a greater effort to control coach and fan behavior toward officials. Gebhard indicated there are other reasons there aren't as many people willing to become officials or are leaving,"Back in 2015, the state legislature began to require officials to have clearances. They cost approximately $60 for the three clearances. They're good for five years. Well, when it came to the renewal program, we lost the officials from 2015 because they didn't want to go through the process. 2021 they had to renew. Many officials felt the same way. I don't want to go through that again. I don't want to pay the $60 even though it's mandated by the state legislature. I think many officials felt they didn't want to go through that. And as everyone remembers, in 2020, COVID hit and many officials dropped just because they might have had an underlying illness or just didn't want to go through wearing a mask while they officiate. So we did lose officials for those two reasons." Gebhard said officials or associations representing officials negotiate pay rates with schools. What's being done to recruit new officials? Gebhard described several marketing and advertising campaigns, including in schools and at championship events. Younger people are becoming officials through a junior officiating program where they officiate middle school grade athletic contests. If you are interested in becoming an official or have questions, go to the PIAA website here. Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
For this BCR program, we talked about that age-old American tradition – book burning – or more precisely – thought control. Our guests were two brave librarians – practicing a profession that is at the core of any effective democracy. Emily Drabinski heads-up the American Library Association [ALA] and Lauren Comito leads Urban Librarians Unite [ULU]. According to ALA findings efforts to ban books in this country are growing at a high rate and the groups engaged in this activity probably do not have children. Librarians and authors fight back, but it is an exhausting struggle. Lauren Comito talked about how the ULU keeps parents and children and the performers safe at Drag Story Hour -- popular among parents -- but potentially dangerous as groups -- such as The Proud Boys -- protest violently near and in our libraries. This conversation was recorded at Gebhard's Beer Culture Bar.Alan Winson -- barcrawlradio@gmail.com Hosted on Acast. Playlist Track Time Start Time Opening and Introduction (Thom Holmes) 11:57 00:00 1. Herbie Hancock, Herbie Hancock Demonstrates The Rhodes Piano (1973 Rhodes). A terrific flexi-disc produced by Rhodes and narrated by Hancock who tells an interesting story about his first encounter with the instrument on a Miles Davis session and then he walks the keyboard through a series of effects. He speaks with the authority of a proud electronics tinkerer who understands the nuances that make this instrument so beloved by jazz musicians. This flexi-disc was originally delivered in the November 8, 1973 issue of Down Beat magazine. I provide both sides of the disc, in entirety. Tunes included during the demonstration include parts of Watermelon Man, Maiden Voyage, and The Spook. Soloist, Rhodes Electric Piano, Voice, Herbie Hancock. I thought it would be wisest to lead off this podcast with an overview of the Rhodes even though it is out of chronological sequence, being from 1973. We then go back a few years to hear tracks in proper time order. 12:48 11:57 2. The Don Ellis Orchestra, “Open Beauty” from Electric Bath (1967 Columbia). See the opening tracks from this podcast for a story about this session from Hancock. Bass, Ron Carter; Drums, Tony Williams; Piano, Fender Electric Piano, Herbie Hancock; Tenor Saxophone, Wayne Shorter; Trumpet, Miles Davis. 16:59 30:14 4. Here is a selection from an album on which he plays the Rock-Si-Chord and occasional piano. Arranged by Oliver Nelson; Rock-Si-Chord, piano, Steve Allen; Drums, Jimmy Gordon; session musicians, Barney Kessel, Bobby Bryant, Larry Bunker, Roger Kellaway, Tom Scott; Produced by Bob Thiele. 2:30 51:24 6. J & K “Mojave” from Betwixt & Between (1969 A&M, CTI). “J” is J.J. Johnson (trombonist) and “K” is Kai Winding (trombonist). Their ensemble included Roger Kellaway playing the electric clavinette. An example of using the clavinet in jazz. This was most likely a Hohner Clavinet Model C which had just been introduced in 1968. Recorded at Van Gelder Studios during late 1968. 2:31 53:54 7. Albert Ayler, “New Generation” from New Grass (1969 Impulse). The great jazz funk flutist Bobbi Humphrey released a series of albums around this time that often-featured fantastic synthesizer players.
Even before graduation, high school students are inundated with financial decisions – from student loans for college to the purchase of a first vehicle. However, equipping those students with the knowledge to make informed decisions has proven to be a big challenge. Latest studies show recent high school graduates (18 years of age) through 29-year-olds carry average credit card debt totaling $2,900. As these students grow older, so does their credit card debt. Gen X carries the highest credit card debt load with more than $8,000 in credit card bills. This does not include mortgages, vehicles or other items that are financed. Sen. Chris Gebhard wants to build a better foundation for future financial decisions starting in high school. He authored a new law that will give students basic money management skills and long-term financial planning through a mandatory course every Pennsylvania student will take in high school. The half-credit personal finance course will be a graduation requirement under the new law he authored. He joins Sen. Kristin Phillips-Hill to discuss his effort, why he sponsored the bill and what it means for the future financial health of everyday Pennsylvanians, starting with the next generation of high school graduates. You can learn more about Sen. Gebhard's new law here: https://senatorgebhard.com/2023/12/13/gebhard-bill-to-improve-financial-literacy-set-for-enactment/

In today's episode,Tara chats once again with her cousin Lisa Gebhard and is put in the hot seat to answer common questions about singing! Enjoy this episode part 2 as a follow up to their first time in February 2021. Here are some of the questions and topics we deal with: Why do some singers sound so different as their voice ages? Why does the pitch change or the tone and timbre of the sound? Why does it sound as if singers slide into notes or are flat? What makes the uniqueness of a singer's style? What makes for a healthy and natural sound in a voice? What are some basic things that happen in a voice lesson? What things do I focus on when I teach a lesson? How do I start with a student? (The monotone singing episode is Episode 7) Why can't we sing on an inhale? We sing on exhalation but it seems impossible to sustain pitch when you are taking in air! Please reach out to me for teaching. This BCR conversation may seem complex but its also simple – and – will possibly end human existence. If your physician can access all of your medical records, she will do a better job. And if generative AI knows all about the health of every human -- what then?We talked with two experts developing the power of Artificial Intelligence to keep us healthy. Dr. Mark Braunstein is the guru of FHIR -- not a misspelling -- an acronym for Fast Healthcare interoperability Resources – a technology helping physicians to access everything about our medical history and condition, easy and fast. Mark is a professor at the School of Interactive Computing at Georgia Tech and a former health Informatics entrepreneur – and a visiting scientist at the eHealth Research Centre in Brisbane, Australia.Vince Hartman is the co-founder and CEO of Abstractive Health, a new company that is reducing physician burnout through the power of generative AI. Mr. Hartman has over a decade of experience in product management and software engineering in the healthcare field. There is a lot more to Vince's resum´e -- but it includes so many technical abbreviations I dare not go there. And visiting BCR as we recorded on the porch of Gebhard's Beer Culture Bar was Peter Frishauf creator of Medscape and godfather of Osmosis.Alan WinsonCONTACT: barcrawlradio@gmail.com Hosted on Acast. Tony Gebhard breaks barriers every day as a musician, podcaster and producer. But he also joined us from the frigid wilderness of Alaska, so we had to get an ice reference in! Join Lizzy and Shane (yes, we give Shane a mic this month) to celebrate our third anniversary by chatting with Tony about his many talents and activities. Plus, hear some more highlights from our division meeting at convention, when Shane took the mic around the room to hear what people were thinking. It's an episode worthy of our "podcastiversary!"

Recently – David Brooks of the New York Times – wrote about the suicide of his close friend—Pete—and the feelings that followed. Brooks writes that experiencing the suicide of someone close “is not just sorrow; it is a state of consciousness that distorts perceptions of time, space and self.”In 2015, there were over 44,000 suicides in America – the 10th most common cause of death and rising – I million attempt suicide each year – one every 35 seconds. In the world some kills himself – herself every 40 seconds.Robert Altman's "Mash" [1970] was wrong -- suicide is not painless – it is a health issue that needs to be examined. For this Bar Crawl Radio podcast Rebecca and I talked with two people who study and write about suicide – and with the friends of Jen who recently killed herself.Carla Fine – has spoken extensively on suicide and is the author of the widely acclaimed book No Time to Say Goodbye – about Ms. Fine's husband – a prominent New York physician who killed himself in 1989 when he was 43.
Becky and I spoke with the music-eclectic Gene Pritsker at Gebhard's Beer Culture Bar a couple of days after his Sound Liberation Band deconstructed Beethoven at Birdland Jazz Club. It was a musical brainstorm called – “Ludwig's Night out” – Beethoven is on a bar crawl while Sonata No. 4 (for violin & piano) is echoing in his brain. Several of the pieces created by Pritsker and Composer Concordance regulars are included in this edit.A bit on Gene Pritsker: He is primarily a composer – also --a rapper – DJ – guitarist –a coordinator of music concerts – teacher – and at one time an actor. As of 2023 he had created over 900 compositions – including, chamber operas – orchestral and chamber works – electro-acoustic music – songs for hip hop and rock ensembles – with accents from many cultures - performed world wide. Gene is the co-director of Composers Concordance with Dan Cooper. We last spoke with the musician at the bar for BCR #38 -- April 2019. It was great catching up with Gene who has been quite busy during the pandemic; for instance, he recorded the sound track for the new "Matrix Resurrections" at Abbey Road Studios and produced a record while in Berlin. Shortly after the American North won the Civil War, construction on the East River bridge was started. Tammany Hall and graft controlled NY City and State, Ulysses S. Grant had just been elected President, and the German-immigrant and bridge designer/builder, who conceived the plan for the bridge, had died. Work on the Bridge took 13 years and up to 40 men died -- mostly immigrants. The cathedral-sized, wooden caissons which allowed workers to dig out the bottom of the East River used pressurized air, resulting in debilitating Caisson Disease-- otherwise known as the "bends." The Brooklyn Bridge was opened in 1883 and quickly became an American icon--a towering structure reflecting a sense of national pride and progress -- a reality, in part, built on greed and death. We spoke with Sarah Rosenblatt, an Architectural Conservationist who is working on restoring the original look of the Brooklyn Bridge -- and with Prof. Richard Haw who has written several books on the Bridge. His most recent book -- Engineering America: The Life and Times of John A. Roebling.Recording at Gebhard's Beer Culture Bar in Manhattan. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
James Baldwin argued that unlike Europeans, Americans do not know who they are. In "Stranger in Paris," Baldwin argued that the French know who they are—ethnically, historically. But Americans are confused. He writes -- we know one when we see one, but cannot name what we have in common. The idea of “America” is formed in our precollege American History classes.
