Und wo bleiben die Menschen, die in Afghanistan von den Taliban unterdrückt werden? „Eine genetische Untersuchung haben wir schon gemacht, da war nichts – unsere Tochter ist gesund.“ So dachte eine Familie jahrelang. Doch im Befund stand: Eine genauere Diagnostik wird empfohlen. Niemand hatte es erklärt und die Chance auf eine frühe Diagnose blieb ungenutzt. Solche Situationen erlebt Dr. Jelena Maric-Biresev vom Institut für Humangenetik und Beraterin am Zentrum für Seltene Erkrankungen am Universitätsklinikum Bonn immer wieder. Dabei kann eine humangenetische Untersuchung nicht nur Klarheit bringen, sondern sogar lebensrettend sein – etwa wenn Eltern frühzeitig über ein erhöhtes Risiko für epileptische Anfälle oder Komplikationen informiert sind. Vidcast:  https://www.instagram.com/p/DQdpWA_kS0y/Age-Related Macular degeneration is the leading cause of adult blindness, but Stanford University research ophthalmologists have developed an electronic retinal implant that promises to restore sight to millions.  Their device, nicknamed PRIMA standing for photovoltaic retina implant microarray, includes a subretinal wireless implant and wearable video camera.  The camera, mounted on an eyeglass frame, detects an image.  That image is converted by a pocket processor into infrared laser light signals that are directed through the lens of the eye to the implant under the retina.  The implant, in turn, creates the neural electrical  signals that restore sight. In dieser Folge sprechen wir mit Prof. Dr. Alexandra Klotz, Leiterin der Neuropädiatrie und des Sozialpädiatrischen Zentrums am Universitätsklinikum Bonn, über ein Thema, das viele junge Eltern plötzlich betrifft, obwohl sie mit Epilepsie eigentlich gar nichts zu tun haben: Fieberkrämpfe (febrile Anfälle). Etwa 3–5 % aller Kinder erleben mindestens einmal im Leben einen Fieberkrampf. Dabei handelt es sich um epileptische Anfälle, die meist durch einen raschen Temperaturanstieg im Rahmen eines Infekts ausgelöst werden – ein Erlebnis, das für viele Eltern zunächst sehr beängstigend ist. Alexandra Klotz erklärt uns: wann man überhaupt von einem Fieberkrampf spricht, wie sich Fieberkrämpfe äußern, ob es sich immer um einen Notfall handelt, was Eltern in der akuten Situation tun können und wann es sinnvoll ist, abklären zu lassen, ob vielleicht doch eine Epilepsie vorliegt. He was twice director of the German Archaeological Institute at Athens (DAI), in which capacity he excavated the Mycenaean site of Tiryns and the Temple of Artemis on Corfu. A colleague of Wilhelm Dörpfeld, who had worked with Heinrich Schliemann at Troy, Karo published the findings from Schliemann's excavations of Grave Circle A at Mycenae. The work was considered Karo's greatest contribution to scholarship.Karo was born in a prosperous merchant family; both of his parents were non-practising Jews, who raised him as a Protestant Christian. Initially inclined towards classical philology, he became interested in archaeology as a student of Georg Loeschcke at the University of Bonn. Following the receipt of his doctorate from Bonn in 1896, Karo travelled widely in the Mediterranean region, developing interests in Minoan civilisation, the Etruscans and ancient biblical commentaries. He taught at Bonn between 1902 and 1905, before moving to the DAI in Athens as Dörpfeld's deputy. Known for his urbane manner and fluency in several languages, he became well connected in the international circles of Greek archaeology, and maintained the favour of both the Greek and the German royal families. His outspoken German nationalism led to his dismissal from the DAI in 1916: he spent some time in the Ottoman Empire, where he worked to conserve cultural heritage and was linked with various efforts to appropriate ancient artefacts and bring them to Germany.Karo's views made him unpopular with the Entente-backed government that ruled in Greece after the First World War, and he took an academic post in Germany at the University of Halle, which he held until 1930. That year, he returned to Athens as director of the DAI. Although an early supporter of the Nazi government of Germany, Karo was forced from his post in 1936 by antisemitism against his Jewish ancestry. In 1939, he fled to the United States, supported by American associates including Carl Blegen and Bert Hodge Hill, and obtained a series of visiting professorships at the University of Cincinnati, Oberlin College and Claremont Colleges. He was also accused of collaborating with the Nazi regime: though no evidence for this allegation was found, he was denied US citizenship and listed as an "Enemy Alien". Woop! Woop! Heute spreche ich mit Matthias von Hellfeld über "Die verunsicherte Nation" (Herder) von der Wiedervereinigung bis zum Umgang mit Migration ist alles dabei. Ich habe zudem auf dem 55. Historikertag in Bonn mit dem Vorsitzendes des Verbands der Historiker und Historikerinnen Deutschlands, Prof. Lutz Raphael , gesprochen. Dabei geht es um die Herausforderungen für Wissenschaft von politischer Einflussnahme bis zu KI in der Lehre. Dann spreche ich mit Alexander Clarkson in unserem zweiten Treffen erneut über die Lage der Welt, das Ende der alten Weltordnung und warum die Generation Kohl, wie Merz, ungeeignet sind uns in dieser Zeit zu führen. Last but not least spreche ich mit Giuliano da Empoli über "Die Stunde der Raubtiere" (C.H.Beck) und was Europa noch tun kann, um die neuen Fürsten abzuwehren. Enjoy!^^

Heute wurde das Urteil im Berufungsprozess in Sachen Ulrike Guérot veröffentlicht. Das Landesarbeitsgericht Köln hat darin die Berufung Guérots zurückgewiesen und die Kündigung der Politikwissenschaftlerin und Autorin durch die Universität Bonn bestätigt.
