Send us a textTurning fifty isn't just about crossing an age threshold—it's about recognizing the human connections that build resilience throughout a lifetime. In this deeply personal episode, therapist Steve Bisson reflects on the relationships that have shaped his capacity for strength, growth, and recovery across five decades.Steve begins by honoring his parents, whose contrasting yet complementary influences established his foundation. His father, who lacked a paternal role model yet became an exceptional dad himself, taught Steve about honesty and critical thinking. His mother—a glass-ceiling breaker before the term existed—demonstrated determination through her 47-year career and instilled feminist principles that continue to guide Steve's professional approach. Together, they exemplified loyalty, work ethic, and perseverance that became cornerstones of his resilience framework. The episode takes listeners through Steve's "Three Musketeers" friendship with Joce and Frank—a bond spanning 38 years that has weathered countless challenges. Through emotional storytelling, Steve reveals how these lifelong connections, along with other key friendships, professional relationships, and even his therapy clients, have collectively taught him different aspects of resilience. Perhaps most touching is his tribute to his teenage daughters, who continue to teach him patience, emotional expression, and growth even as they navigate their own challenges.Steve's resilience journey illuminates how our capacity to overcome obstacles isn't built in isolation but through meaningful connections that sustain us. Whether you're approaching a milestone birthday, reflecting on your support network, or simply curious about the human factors behind emotional strength, this episode offers valuable insights into how relationships shape our ability to navigate life's inevitable challenges. We have been doing this for five decades and many of the community volunteers have also helped out since they were kids! This post is different from many posts, as it is as much a community center as it is a sanctuary for veterans. This small, historically Polish community is as full of veteran support as the flavor in our barbecue. This is the reason that so many community members step in to help raise money by volunteering numerous hours to create an authentic home-cooked barbecue...Article Link

In the capital Beirut, some buildings still bear the scars of battle. Others have been rebuilt, but the trauma remains in people's minds. Our correspondent Serge Berberi spoke to some of those who lived through the conflict and who are trying to keep its memory alive today. He brings us this report, with Rawad Taha.

As a sociologist, my career couldn't be further from that of my father, who spent his life on the road as a truck driver. "I just believe very passionately that if you're going to take your industry seriously, you need to be engaged, you need to be involved." --Joe Rajkovacz, Director of Government Affairs, Western States Trucking Association The quote above comes from this week's long talk with Rajkovacz, with a long history in trucking and with the last decade and a half or so with Western States, headquartered in California and among the most prominent actors nationally challenging the onerous parts of the California Air Resources Board's ever-more-complicated emissions and equipment regulations. Rajkovacz was speaking to the value of association membership for business owners in whatever industry they participate in. Specifically for him, of course, that's trucking, tracking back to his time as an owner-operator first in the 1980s and in trucking in other roles before that, as you'll hear in today's episode highlighting his career. In this final regular edition of Overdrive Radio for the year, track back through Rajkovacz's early years trucking, from a wash bay to behind the wheel as a Teamster for a brief time early on, then to truck ownership, decades over-the-road, and coming off the road for full-time association work with the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association in 2006. He wouldn't be there but for a few years, after which he joined Western States, then the California Construction Trucking Association, to devote more energy to challenging CARB's Truck and Bus Regulation, which would ultimate ban 2006 and older emissions-spec engines in-state. I'ts at Western States where he's officially concluded his career, retiring earlier this month back near where he began his trucking career in Wisconsin with his wife, Joan. The two are proud parents of three grown children, grandparents of eight, and staying warm this winter season, we hope. This conversation was conducted in November during the long-running annual event where Overdrive editor Todd Dills got to know Rajkovacz well -- the annual conference of the National Association of Small Trucking Companies. Rajkovacz has been a perennial presenter there, and odds are will continue to be as his engagement with regulatory and legislative issues on the West Coast for trucking will also be continuing, as you'll hear in today's episode. You'll hear more of Joe Rajkovacz's story, no doubt, but also plenty evidence of what his career represents – he's among the best examples we have of a trucking industry participant who spent the time and did the work to act on something fundamental to the truly engaged in the business: a real love for it, and a desire to see conditions for its participants improve for the better. On Sunday, Syrian rebels led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) made its final march on the Syrian capital of Damascus. The rebels had already claimed the major cities of Aleppo, Hama and Homs. In a matter of hours and with little violence, Syrian government forces abandoned their posts and HTS claimed victory. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad fled the country and has been granted asylum in Russia. After more than five decades, Syria is no longer under the rule of the Assad dynasty. And the region is transformed forever. But as people rejoice across Syria – what's left is immense uncertainty about the future of the country's government and its place in the region. We get to the latest and look to the future for both Syria and the Middle East.Want to support 1A? As a child Bob McKeown dreamed of winning the Grey Cup and being a reporter like his dad — both dreams he achieved. As the Fifth Estate host prepares to retire after 53 years in journalism, he looks back at a career that includes being punched in the face at an interview, bitten by a shark on camera and threatened with prison time for his work.
Here we go! We have the privilege of collaborating with our lab partner Bob Cunningham, of Arthur Freedman Associates, a true water industry expert whose journey flows through five decades of dedication, transformation, and insight. Starting his own company 35 years ago, Bob has navigated the currents of change in the field, sharing the lessons that come from a lifetime of experience. For those new to the water industry, Bob's story will inspire you to write your own chapters with integrity and resilience; for seasoned professionals, it's a reminder of the profound impact a lifelong commitment to this work can make. What Was Your Career Journey Like? Reflecting on the story of his career, Bob described a path full of purpose and momentum, driven by a passion for water treatment and a vision for what it could become. “Stand back, and here we go!” he recalled, capturing the excitement of building his career. Founding his own company was a wish come true, powered by the “dream team” he assembled to carry it forward. Decades later, Bob's journey is a testament to the possibilities that await those who dedicate themselves to the water treatment profession. The Good and the Bad Changes Over the Years With years of experience flowing behind him, Bob has observed major shifts in the water industry. He identified two of the most positive changes he's seen: Industry Diversification: With more people setting up their own companies, the wave of new businesses has strengthened the industry and fostered innovation. Advancements in Research: Today's resources—from molecules to biocides and surfactants—have expanded far beyond what was available in the past, equipping professionals with powerful tools to improve water systems. Still, Bob also pointed out challenges, notably the drive for “greener” policies that, while well-intentioned, sometimes lack the scrutiny needed to ensure they're effective and sustainable. Advice for New Water Professionals Bob shared valuable advice for those just beginning their own journey: “Keep it straight. Keep it ethical. Don't stretch it.” In a field as important as water treatment, integrity flows through every successful career. Bob also warns against trying to gain business by cutting prices, as it ultimately backfires. Instead, he encourages presenting quality, honest solutions as the key to long-term success and respect in the field. What is the Best Way to Get Ahead in This Industry? When it comes to advancing in water treatment, Bob suggests taking a page from those who've already made a mark. “Watch the successful people in the industry. Keep an eye on those folks. Then try to incorporate what they are doing into your own career as you grow.” He also emphasized the importance of broad, in-depth knowledge: “You've got to know every aspect of this business. So, study.” From mechanical and microbiological aspects to chemistry, Bob's advice highlights the depth and commitment it takes to ride the waves of a successful career in water. How Did You Get Involved with the AWT? Bob's connection with the Association of Water Technologies (AWT) began as a way to network with others who share a passion for advancing the industry. Over the years, his work with AWT has strengthened his dedication to education, standards, and mentorship within the field. Bob's Go-To References Navigating the water industry requires solid references, and Bob's approach has always been to keep his library of resources close at hand. When faced with challenges, he turns to trusted materials that help him troubleshoot and understand the complex systems in his work. For Bob, maintaining this holistic knowledge is essential to staying effective and adaptive in an ever-evolving industry. Scale UP! Your Water Career Tune into this episode for a front-row view of Bob's life in water—a story of purpose, change, and professional wisdom. H2O Academy video courses Submit a Show Idea Drop By Drop with James In today's episode, I want you to picture yourself looking at the water level in the basin of a cooling tower. You may want to press fast forward on your imagination just a little, but as you watch the water, you see the water level dropping ever so slowly as water evaporates away or is being blown down from the system. At some point, you notice makeup water starts flowing into the basin. My question for you is what control scheme caused this to happen? Have you ever put much thought into all these ways makeup water is controlled in a cooling tower system? Is there a float mechanism? Perhaps probes of some sort? Or is there an ultrasonic device? Are there others? Also, is the makeup valve mechanically opened or electronically opened? What are the pros and cons of each option? What if there is foaming in the cooling tower basin? Would any of these control schemes be impacted? What are all the way these makeup control schemes could fail? Could they fail so too much makeup water was added? Could they fail so too little makeup water was added? Who would have thought there was so much to think about on just the makeup water control to a cooling tower system? In the national conversation about abortion rights, the voices of actual abortion providers are often unheard. Dr. Curtis Boyd was involved in establishing the National Abortion Federation (NAF) and is a founding member of the Federation's board of directors; and Glenna Boyd, RN, is a counselor, trainer and consultant. They join host Krys Boyd to discuss their life's work providing abortions for women in need, why they say a healthy democracy needs compromise on complex issues, and how the Dobbs decision felt like a death. Their book is “We Choose To: A Memoir of Providing Abortion Care Before, During, and After Roe.”

In 1975, after Manson Family member Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme's attempt to kill President Gerald Ford, the FBI found a cache of letters in the would-be assassin's Sacramento apartment. The return address belonged to future forensic psychologist Jeffrey Smalldon, then a young undergraduate.A decade later, after the shocking murders of two co-workers, Smalldon's quest to understand the twisted minds and motivations of killers became personal in a way it never had been before.THAT BEAST WAS NOT ME documents five decades of conversations with murderers like John Wayne Gacy, Charles Manson, Ted Bundy, serial sniper Thomas Lee Dillon, and Donald Harvey—then thought to be the most prolific serial killer in American history. Through letters, prison visits, and interviews, Smalldon gives readers a terrifying look into the darkest recesses of the human psyche.
