In this episode you will be inspired by a girl who was sexually abused growing up, and now, years later, she shares her story about forgiveness, second chances, and choosing to overcome.   There is much we can learn from this courageous and insightful young lady. Below are just a few of her inspirational quotes:..."I'm going to make mistakes, everyone else is going to make mistakes... it's my choice to forgive them like God forgives them, because if I don't then it's only going to cause me pain, it's not going to hurt them if I don't forgive them... I just need to remember that I never run out of second chances, and neither do they. ""Every day is a brand new day, it's a brand new chapter in your life that you can choose to let your story... be either negative or positive.""The things that we go through definitely shape us and influence us to who we're going to be.""Your happiness is what matters and if you have Christ in your live guiding you, then you're going to be happy." "Choose something everyday that going to make you happy and try to just do those things for you and no one else.""I'm going to mess up every single day in one way or another, but that doesn't define me.. what defines me is how I choose to overcome those things, whether I choose to talk to God about it, or to let it bring me down even more."

At a little after 4 PM on August 21st, 1984, on the side of the road at East Loop 338 just outside Odessa, Texas city limits, a man thought he'd witnessed a hit and run involving a pedestrian and a gold Buick. But when Ector County Sheriff's Deputy David Montgomery discovered it wasn't a hit and run at all, rather, a woman had been stabbed and slashed repeatedly. The woman was Janet Eva Gregston, who was 7 months pregnant. When a man claiming to have ESP entered the Sheriff's Office to tell them about his visions, he quickly became suspect number one – or the only suspect, really – and he was subsequently arrested and indicted. Doubt about his guilt, however, wasn't only felt be his defense attorney – and the entire debacle was eerily reminiscent of another failed attempt at a murder conviction a couple years before. If you have any information about the murder of Janet Eva Gregston, please contact Odessa Crime Stoppers at (432)333-8477.Please donate to help get #JusticeForLeonLaureles at gofundme.com/f/leon-laureles-private-detective-and-memorialYou can donate to law enforcement investigations that need funding or upload your DNA into a database used only for law enforcement investigations at DNAsolves.com If you don't have DNA data from a consumer testing site, you can get a kit at connect.DNAsolves.comPlease consider donating to the Fort Worth Cold Case Support Group at fwpdcoldcasesupport.orgYou can support gone cold and listen ad-free at patreon.com/gonecoldpodcastFind us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram by using @gonecoldpodcast and on YouTube at: youtube.com/c/gonecoldpodcastThe Odessa American, The Austin Chronicle, and UPI Archives were used as sources for this episode.#JusticeForJanetGregston #Odessa #OdessaTX #EctorCountyTX #Texas #TX #TexasTrueCrime #GoneCold #GoneColdPodcast #ColdCase #Unsolved #Murder #UnsolvedMurder #Homicide #UnsolvedMysteries #TrueCrime #TrueCrimePodcast #Podcast

Talking to Kids About Grief with Mark Gregston

How do we discuss grief with our kids? Today's guest, Mark Gregston, shares how we can support kids through experiences of grief.   Mark Gregston began his work with teens forty years ago when he was a youth minister and then an area director with Young Life. He and his wife Jan opened their home to work with those who were struggling through family crises, and in 1989, Mark and Jan moved with their two children, Adam and Melissa, to Hallsville, Texas. Here they started Heartlight, a residential counseling center for struggling teens and families in crisis. Mark explains the importance of validating the sorrow of loss and allowing kids the time to grieve. We discuss the need to lament each loss and how grief shows how much we value life. Gregston notes the need for kids to acknowledge how much the person or pet meant to them. We discuss the vital need for a child to feel heard and to experience compassion. Mark emphasizes the need to allow kids to talk through their feelings without feeling rushed. We explore the harm caused by those who rush us past grief and urge us to move on too quickly. Instead of robbing us of the important period of lament by shoving us into feeling better immediately, supportive friends and family should choose a more loving response and prove willing to endure our sorrow with us. We note how love is proven by our willingness to be in the uncomfortable space of pain with our family and neighbors. Mark Gregston's book, Where's Stitch, creates discussion points using the framework of story to invite kids to explore conversations about grief. He highlights the need to acknowledge we don't have all the answers. Gregston also encourages parents and supportive loved ones to remain silent or simply assure the bereaved of their presence instead of trite responses, advice, or food.  Get your copy of Where's Stitch at https://wheresstitchbook.com/ Connect with Mark Gregston's ministries at https://www.heartlightministries.org/ and https://parentingtodaysteens.org/   Access the Unlovely Truth's free report at https://www.theunlovelytruthtribe.com/uttylk22r3e?affiliate_id=3727901

Virtual relationships, excessive screen time, information overload, extended adolescence, these are just a few of the problems plaguing today's teenagers. How do we help them navigate the cultural waters they're swimming in? Today on the BreakPoint Podcast, Warren Cole Smith interviews Mark Gregston, founder and executive director of Heartlight Ministries, a residential counseling facility for adolescents in crisis based in the piney-woods region of east Texas. Gregston shares his thoughts on leading teens from information (which they have plenty of) to wisdom; on helping parents go from teaching to training, from providing answers to helping their teens ask the right questions. And as we approach our fiscal year end, we would so appreciate you considering a donation to BreakPoint and the Colson Center to help us end this year strong.
