An increased emphasis on public safety and a renewed focus on the pension plan are top priorities for the Columbia Police Officers Association (CPOA). CPOA president Matt Nichols joined host Fred Parry in-studio for the hour Saturday morning on 939 the Eagle's “CEO Roundtable” program. Mr. Nichols describes CPOA as the voice for the men and women who serve the Columbia Police Department, who decide to join CPOA. The organization has about 145 members, and President Nichols says they have about 99 percent of membership of those who are sergeants and below. Mr. Nichols tells Fred Parry that turnover at the Columbia Police Department has been about 71 percent since 2012, since changes were made to pension plans. He tells listeners that the restoration of the pension plan will help with CPD retention. Mr. Nichols also wants to see more funding for police and for public safety, saying more and more city dollars are being spent on social programs. Matt Nichols was born and raised in Columbia and was a “Boone baby”, which means he was born at Boone Hospital Center. Dr. Bob McDavid, who later served as mayor, delivered him. Mr. Nichols graduated from Hickman high school and served as a police cadet at one time. He's also worked for the Hallsville and Ashland police departments. He's also worked in the public sector, for Home Depot, Lowe's and as a carpenter. Mr. Nichols worked at numerous stores for Lowe's for almost a decade before he started as CPD. Mr. Nichols serves as a detective for the Columbia Police Department. As Fred Parry emphasized in this one-hour interview, Mr. Nichols is representing CPOA during this interview and is not speaking for the Columbia Police Department:

Missouri State Auditor Scott Fitzpatrick has released a new report that identifies what he calls significant inadequacies in Missouri's property tax credit program, which is known as the circuit breaker. Auditor Fitzpatrick, a Republican, gives the program a rating of "poor" and says the program lacks sufficient oversight. Auditor Fitzpatrick also says more than 188,000 taxpayers may have been eligible for the credit in 2022 while only 140,000 claims were approved for the credit during the same time period. State Rep. Cheri Toalson Reisch (R-Hallsville) joined us live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri". She'll leave office in December after eight years in the Missouri House. She notes she's been helping seniors and disabled residents in the Hallsville area with the circuit breaker for about 30 years. She says while the state Department of Revenue (DOR) should follow the auditor's recommendations, more can be done to make the program more simple and reduces its complexities:

When The Shreveport Times released verbatim portions of troubling letters Kimberly Norwood had written months before her disappearance, it was the first time her parents, Bobby and Janice Norwood, had read them. It was another blow, they said, like the many they felt they'd been hit with at the hands of Harrison County Sheriff Bill Oldham. Out of desperation, the family brought in a Dallas psychic, but what she had to say, which included information that had been previously released in the local newspaper, led absolutely nowhere. But when Janice Norwood found out a neighbor had seen a motorcycle leaving the Caney Creek addition in Hallsville at the same time Kimberly is thought to have vanished, an employee of the family becomes a potential suspect. In early May 1989, sixteen-year-old Michelle Lee Richardson vanished from East Texas, the city of Palestine specifically. Just weeks later, on May 20th, another East Texas girl turned up missing under similar circumstances. Kimberly Norwood was a twelve-year-old who loved life and, believe it or not, school. She was experiencing the normal throes of being a preteen, but Kimberly was a good kid who never got in trouble and had certainly never tried to run away. But when she came up missing near her home in the Caney Creek Addition of Hallsville, Texas, the Harrison County Sheriff's Office were working the case as if she had left on her own. Kimberly took no clothes, however, and left all her money behind. The harder the Norwood's fought for Sheriff Bill Oldham to allow outside help to come in, the harder he fought against them. All they wanted was their little girl back, and the lawman, as the Marshall News Messenger put it, seemed unmoved by the family's plight. If you have any information about the disappearance of Kimberly Rochelle Norwood, please call the Harrison County Sheriff's Office at 903-935-4888.If you have any information about the disappearance of Michelle Lee Richardson, please contact the Anderson County Sheriff's Department at 903-729-6068.You can support Gone Cold – Texas True Crime and listen to the show ad-free at patreon.com/gonecoldpodcastFind us at https://www.gonecold.comFollow gone cold on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok, YouTube, and X. Missouri's governor signed Senate Bill 190 into law in 2023, which allows counties to freeze property tax increases for seniors who are eligible for Social Security, own a home and are required to pay taxes on that home. Missouri counties can put the new measure in place by ordinance or by voter approval. State Rep. Representative Toalson Reisch says both sides need to lock themselves into a room until they can work it out. A west-central Missouri GOP congressman has high praise for new U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana). Mr. Johnson became the 56th House Speaker on Wednesday. U.S. Rep. Mark Alford (R-Raymore) joined us live this morning on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri", describing Speaker Johnson as quiet, reserved and thoughtful. Congressman Alford says there's something different about this Speaker, which he appreciates. He also says Speaker Johnson is committed to visiting each GOP House member's district that he hasn't visited already. Congressman Alford looks forward to the Speaker visiting the sprawling fourth district, which includes Columbia, Centralia, Hallsville, Sedalia and Fort Leonard Wood:
