Based on the 1981 novel Red Dragon by Thomas Harris, it stars William Petersen as FBI profiler Will Graham. Also featured are Tom Noonan as serial killer Francis Dollarhyde, Dennis Farina as Graham's FBI superior Jack Crawford, and Brian Cox as incarcerated killer Hannibal Lecktor. The film focuses on Graham coming out of retirement to lend his talents to an investigation on Dollarhyde, a killer known as the Tooth Fairy. In doing so, he must confront the demons of his past and meet with Lecktor, who nearly killed Graham. Manhunter focuses on the forensic work carried out by the FBI to track down killers and shows the long-term effects that cases like this have on profilers such as Graham, highlighting the similarities between him and his quarry. The film features heavily stylized use of color to convey this sense of duality, and the nature of the characters' similarity has been explored in academic readings of the film. It was the first film adaptation of Harris' Hannibal Lecter novels, as well as the first adaptation of Red Dragon, which later became the basis for a film of the same name in 2002. Opening to mixed reviews, Manhunter fared poorly at the box office at the time of its release, making only $8.6 million in the United States. However, it has been reassessed in more recent reviews and now enjoys a more favorable reception, as both the acting and the stylized visuals have been appreciated better in later years. Its resurgent popularity, which may be due to later adaptations of Harris' books and Petersen's success in CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, has seen it labelled as a cult film.

In episode 20, we "chat up" the Amazon Prime series A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN with author and poet Toni Asante Lightfoot about the character Max Chapman, her family including her trans uncle Bertie, best friend Clance, and Rockford's African American community as depicted in the series. In the 1992 "A League of Their Own" feature film on which this series is based, you see the grit and romance of the game with the Rockford Peaches and women baseball teams that were part of the All American Professional Girls Baseball League during WWII. What was not prominent in the 1992 movie (more subtext) are untold stories of African American, Latina, and queer women baseball players and the lives they lived in the 1940s and 50s. These stories are highlighted in the Amazon Prime series. A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN (the 2022 series) is co-created by Abbi Jacobson (who plays Rockford Peaches player Carson Shaw) and Will Graham. BONUS content: Toni Asante Lightfoot reads her poem “Bat Her Up: Mom's Mabley watches Negro women play ball for their supper” (mentioned in Episode 20). You'll find the bonus content at this LINK. “I was a queer kid and I didn't really have a vocabulary for that — I don't know what was ‘wrong' with me — but I had this sense I wasn't right for the world exactly as it was around me,” said screenwriter Will Graham. “So I think stories, movies, TV, comic books, novels…they were a place I could escape and process what was happening to me.” Graham continued, “I think that's the impulse that brought me to making things. The idea of taking people somewhere outside the space of their normal lives that's special. Not just giving them a fun adventure but something they can take back with them.” These projects include Movie 43, Alpha House, Mozart in the Jungle, and the new series A League of Their Own. The latest series is a comedy about the WWII All-American professional women's baseball league. The ensemble stars Abbi Jacobson, D'Arcy Carden, Chanté Adams, Molly Emphraim, and Nick Offerman.

George really likes Hannibal Lecter. But how will he handle Hannibal Lecktor? We didn't tell him that Manhunter is based on the book Red Dragon, and so it is essentially the original and Red Dragon (which we watched last week) is a remake. Despite it saying "Based on the novel Red Dragon" in the opening titles, how long will George go before he realizes this is the same movie? He'll read the credits, right? Right!? There's shades of (and discussions of) Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Batman, Silence of the Lambs and many more as George attempts to see where this early Michael Mann movie fits within the framework he knows from the later movies and TV show. Will George see the value in a much more grounded approach to familiar characters like Will Graham, Hannibal and Jack Crawford? Will Travis appreciate the nuanced but subtle reading of the dialogue that leaves the tension in the details instead of big swings of theatrical pomp? Or will they both poo on the movie mercilessly? And what hidden detail did Dan notice that would tie a line from Pink Floyd all the way though Silence of the Lambs? Tune in to find out! REVIVAL A Series By Will Graham It was March 2020. I was supposed to be in Tifton, Georgia, in the southern United States, holding a three-day evangelistic outreach. Instead, I sat next to my wife in our North Carolina home, contemplating the suddenly-tumultuous state of our world. The COVID-19 pandemic had quickly raced around the globe. Schools were cancelling classes. Businesses were shutting down. Churches were closing their doors. The news was filled with breathless updates of an apocalyptic nature. In the United States we were seeing semi-trucks being used as morgues, and interviews with people who were dying in hospital beds. It became clear that our event in Tifton needed to be postponed. In its place, we hastily scheduled an online program; an opportunity to share the Gospel via livestream to Georgia and beyond. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but – as I sat there with my wife, contemplating what I would speak about during the livestream – I was overwhelmed. What could I possibly say in my message? What did I have to offer as the world was being consumed with disease and death? If I’m being fully honest with you, I wasn’t just overwhelmed. I was afraid as well. Despite my focus on eternal matters, I am human. And that part of me was just as scared of the potential for mass casualties – perhaps even my own family – as everybody else. My godly wife, sensing my struggle, offered her guidance: “Just talk about Jesus. The Name of Jesus is the only thing that has the power to drive out fear.” She was absolutely right, and that’s what I did. To a world gripped by panic and anxiety, I proclaimed the Name of Jesus: the hope, peace, power and purpose found in Him alone. The world has changed a lot in the last 24 months. The spirit of fear is still very strong. People are afraid of COVID, of lockdowns, of losing their jobs, or of getting sick. Relationships are strained. Some have lost faith in their governments, their schools, and even their doctors. The world, in many ways, is a mess. But that doesn’t change this fact: The Name of Jesus is still the answer to every problem we face. The temporary struggles of this world fade away in the presence of the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. The problem, however, is that so many of our friends, neighbors and loved ones do not understand the hope that Christ offers, and the peace that can be found in a true relationship with Him. They’re desperate for something, but have not yet found the fulfillment they seek. My friends, in the following devotionals, I hope to not just challenge you to share your faith with others, but also equip you with a few basic strategies for sharing “the hope that is in you” (1 Peter 3:15). We have a limited amount of time on this earth to make an impact for the Kingdom, and we must use that time wisely. Eternity is at stake. Ya en el siglo I fue atacada por varias corrientes de pensamiento y filosofías, especialmente desde el mundo helénico.
