Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and his mother (Randee Heller) move from New Jersey to Reseda, CA , to start a new life.  It seems promising at first, but soon Daniel hates his new environs, thanks to a few run-ins at school with a group of karate-trained bullies.  He does manage to irk the leader of the bullies, Johnny (William Zabka), when he starts seeing his ex-girlfriend, Ali (Elisabeth Shue).  Johnny and gang belong to a no-holds-barred karate school in town that has a slogan of "no mercy", run by ex-Vietnam vet John Kreese (Martin Kove).  After the landlord of Daniel's apartment complex, Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita), saves him from the gang one day, he decides to teach the young man some karate, except in the ways of the honored Japanese tradition.  Miyagi and Kreese form a pact that Daniel is to be "off limits" until the day of the big karate tournament in town, where the different styles of karate come to clash, but Daniel is far from ready for the match.  With help from Miyagi, he prepares every day for the event, but he finds the teaching methods unorthodox, monotonous, and strenuous.

Cobra Kai is an American martial arts comedy drama television series created by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg, and distributed by Sony Pictures Television. It serves as a sequel to the original The Karate Kid films created by Robert Mark Kamen.[1] The series premiered on May 2, 2018, and concluded on February 13, 2025, after six seasons consisting of 65 episodes. The series stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka, reprising their respective roles as Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence from the film series, alongside Courtney Henggeler, Xolo Maridueña, Tanner Buchanan, Mary Mouser, Jacob Bertrand, Gianni DeCenzo, Peyton List, Vanessa Rubio, and Dallas Dupree Young. Martin Kove and Thomas Ian Griffith also reprise their roles from the films as part of the main cast, with many others returning in guest or recurring roles.Cobra Kai re-examines The Karate Kid films as Johnny's "redemption story,"[2] beginning with his decision to reopen the Cobra Kai karate dojo, and the rekindling of his old rivalry with Daniel.[3] The series attained high viewership on both YouTube and Netflix, and received critical acclaim for its writing, performances, action sequences, humor, character development, and faithfulness to the films. It received numerous awards and nominations, with the third season being nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series at the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards.Thirty-four years after being defeated by Daniel LaRusso in the 1984 All-Valley Karate Tournament at the end of The Karate Kid (1984), Johnny Lawrence suffers from alcoholism and depression. He works as a part-time handyman and lives in an apartment in Reseda, Los Angeles, having fallen far from his wealthy lifestyle in Encino. He has an estranged son named Robby, from a previous relationship, whom he has abandoned. In contrast, Daniel is now the owner of a successful car dealership and is married to co-owner Amanda with whom he has two children: Sam and Anthony. However, Daniel often struggles to meaningfully connect with his children especially after his friend and mentor Mr. Miyagi passed away prior to the series' beginning. After using karate to defend his teenage neighbor Miguel Diaz from a group of bullies, Johnny agrees to teach Miguel the way of the fist and re-opens Cobra Kai. The revived dojo attracts a group of bullied social outcasts who find camaraderie and self-confidence under Johnny's tutelage. The reopening of Cobra Kai reignites Johnny's rivalry with Daniel, who responds by opening the Miyagi-do dojo, whose students include Sam and Robby, leading to a rivalry between the respective dojos.Pre

Photo: Kathleen O'Grady (L) Faith Imaafiion (R) Theatre of Note's production of Fruition 2019A lifelong actor, Kathleen O'Grady's earliest memory of her life's work finds her riding with her siblings around Los Angeles, in the back of her mother's car—driving to the next audition. Growing up in the town of Reseda -  named for the mignonette a fragrant plant found in the gardens of the San Fernando Valley - her parents moved north to the Bay area where team soccer and volleyball replaced limited theatrical opportunity.Chicago's robust theater community called this aspiring performer to enroll in DePaul's Theater School, formerly The Goodman School, where she studied under legendary thespian mentors Dr. Bella Itkin, and Joe Slovick. After graduation Kathleen catapulted from commercials, created her own theater company, and performed with Steppenwolf, the theater company which launched the careers of Joan Allen, John Malkovich, Laurie Metcalf, and Martha Plimpton. Inspired by love, a move to New York found Kathleen exploring every aspect of her craft from guest starring roles in Murder in the First, Law & Order,  Off Broadway productions, and more commercials. A pivot arrived while finding a natural proclivity for landscape design while working in her garden.  Following a new passion, she studied landscape design and horticulture at Columbia University, where she earned her master's degree.  Kathleen follows sister passions of acting, producing, landscape design integrating native plants, beneficial insects, soil regeneration, restorative permaculture, and land stewardship. This master artist and designer can be found at Theatre of Note, and Gregory Davis & Associates Landscape Design. It was such a thrill to catch up and host Kathleen on this episode of Intrinsic Drive ® . Intrinsic Drive ®  is produced by Ellen Strickler and Phil Wharton and Andrew Hollingworth  is sound editor and engineer.Created by Human Beings for Human Beings. Born To Watch - A Movie Podcast

In the annals of cinema history, certain films stand out as timeless classics, and "The Karate Kid" (1984) is undeniably one of them. Directed by John G. Avildsen and starring Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso and Pat Morita as Mr. Miyagi, this iconic coming-of-age film has left an indelible mark on generations of moviegoers. With its compelling characters, powerful life lessons, and memorable martial arts sequences, "The Karate Kid" has earned its place as a beloved and enduring piece of American cinema."The Karate Kid" tells the story of Daniel LaRusso, a teenager who moves to a new town, Reseda, California, with his mother. Daniel soon finds himself the target of a group of bullies led by Johnny Lawrence, played by William Zabka. Seeking help and solace, he befriends Mr. Miyagi, an enigmatic handyman and martial arts master who becomes his mentor. The heart of the story revolves around the relationship between Daniel and Mr. Miyagi. Mr. Miyagi agrees to teach Daniel karate, not only to defend himself but also to impart important life lessons. Through a series of seemingly mundane tasks, Mr. Miyagi teaches Daniel the fundamentals of martial arts, emphasizing the importance of discipline, focus, and inner strength. One of the film's greatest strengths is its character development. Ralph Macchio delivers a standout performance as Daniel LaRusso, portraying the character's vulnerability, determination, and growth with authenticity. As we witness Daniel transform from a bullied outsider to a confident martial artist, his journey becomes deeply relatable and inspiring.Pat Morita's portrayal of Mr. Miyagi is nothing short of iconic. Morita's performance earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, and for good reason. Mr. Miyagi is a complex character, blending humor, wisdom, and a tragic past. His mentorship of Daniel goes beyond teaching karate; it becomes a mentorship in life itself. The bond between Daniel and Mr. Miyagi is the emotional core of the film and is beautifully developed throughout. At its core, "The Karate Kid" explores timeless themes of mentorship, friendship, perseverance, and the power of inner strength. The film emphasizes that karate is not merely a physical discipline but a way of life. Mr. Miyagi's teachings transcend the dojo, offering valuable insights into facing life's challenges with grace and resilience. One of the film's most iconic scenes is when Mr. Miyagi teaches Daniel to wax his car, sand the floor, and paint the fence. These seemingly mundane tasks turn out to be the building blocks of karate techniques. The lesson here is that discipline, repetition, and attention to detail are the keys to mastery. It's a powerful message that resonates with viewers of all ages. The film also touches on the theme of bullying, as Johnny Lawrence and his gang torment Daniel throughout the story. "The Karate Kid" encourages viewers to stand up against bullies while promoting the idea that true strength comes from within and is not about seeking revenge."The Karate Kid" features some memorable martial arts sequences that are both visually impressive and emotionally charged. The climactic tournament scene, where Daniel faces off against Johnny, is a masterclass in building tension and excitement. The audience can't help but root for Daniel as he puts into practice everything he has learned from Mr. Miyagi. The choreography of the fight scenes is well-executed, and they serve to underscore the film's central message: that martial arts is not about aggression but self-discipline and control. These sequences are thrilling without resorting to gratuitous violence, making them suitable for a wide audience."The Karate Kid" (1984) has left an enduring legacy in popular culture. It spawned two sequels, an animated series, a remake in 2010, and even a successful television series, "Cobra Kai," which picks up the story of the characters decades later. The film's characters, quotes, and iconic moments have become ingrained in the cultural lexicon, ensuring that its influence continues to be felt.In conclusion, "The Karate Kid" (1984) is a timeless masterpiece that transcends generational boundaries. Its enduring appeal lies in its compelling characters, powerful life lessons, and memorable martial arts sequences. Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita deliver exceptional performances, and their portrayal of the mentor-student relationship remains one of cinema's most beloved partnerships. The film's themes of mentorship, friendship, perseverance, and the power of inner strength continue to resonate with audiences today. "The Karate Kid" is not just a movie; it's a lesson in life itself, reminding us that with discipline, determination, and the guidance of a wise mentor, we can overcome any obstacle that stands in our way. Decades after its release, "The Karate Kid" remains a classic that continues to inspire and uplift, making it a must-watch for movie enthusiasts of all ages. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcast If you are looking to start a podcast and want a host or get guests to pipe in remotely, look no further than Riverside.fmClick the link below https://riverside.fm/?utm_campaign=campaign_1&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=rewardful&via=matthew

Richie Reseda is a feminist ally, community organizer, recording artist, and founder of the social-impact record label, Question Culture. Success Stories, the anti-patriarchy organization he started while incarcerated, was chronicled in the CNN documentary “The Feminist on Cell Block Y.” He changes California prison policy with Initiate Justice, an organization he co-founded in prison.  We talked with Richie about:  1. The part he played in introducing Bell Hooks' work to incarcerated men as a way to illustrate and push back on the Soul murder a patriarchal society demands of men 2. How we teach our children to understand the truth of their power vs the false ideations this society has taught them about where there power lies - and how they might reach for love and safety over fear 3. Why our work is not to strive for reform, but rather the abolition of the colonial system were currently living with 4. The importance of understanding that the societal ‘rules of governance' are essentially violence that perpetuates more violence, given that they are not collaborative and created with a community's consent  5. Why the patriarchal narrative of right and wrong or ‘good and bad' always equate to a form of domination, and why the evolution of a Soul based societal perspective is rooted in curiosity, consent, and collaboration  This conversation with Richie is truly one of the most profound ones we've had on the podcast. We are certain that you will be as impacted as we were by the calls to introspection and action he elicits through his words.  You can see Richie in the CNN documentary “The Feminist on Cell Block Y” Connect with Richie ***Instagram ***Question Culture Instagram ***For Everyone Collective Instagram And, if you love the conversations we're bringing you as much as we do, please rate and write a review of the podcast so we can get the podcast out to even more people!
