Today, I am honored to welcome Dr. Rob Ramseyer, the esteemed Vice President of Athletics and Strategic Expansion at Friends University, as well as the co-founder of the Impact Coaching Project. This initiative is dedicated to nurturing coaches who emphasize the holistic development of student-athletes, advocating for a coaching philosophy that extends beyond mere performance metrics. Throughout our dialogue, we will explore Dr. Ramsmer's conviction that authentic coaching fosters not only athletic prowess but also personal growth and resilience in young athletes. His accomplishments include authoring a book on athletic leadership and hosting the podcast "Beyond Coaching," where he delves into similar themes of effective mentorship and community building in sports. Join us as we discuss the transformative potential of coaching and the critical importance of prioritizing relationships within athletic environments. The conversation with Dr. Rob Ramseyer is a thought-provoking exploration of the current state of coaching and athlete development in collegiate sports. As the Vice President of Athletics and Strategic Expansion at Friends University, Dr. Ramseyer has pioneered the Impact Coaching Project, which seeks to revolutionize coaching by strongly emphasizing the holistic development of student-athletes. This initiative serves as a testament to his belief that effective coaching extends beyond the mere metrics of performance, advocating instead for a model that nurtures athletes' physical and emotional well-being. During our discussion, Dr. Ramseyer sheds light on the changing landscape of youth athletics, highlighting the increasing pressures that young athletes face in today's society, mainly due to the advent of social media and heightened expectations from families. He articulates the necessity for coaches to build meaningful relationships with their athletes, as evidenced by research conducted at Friends University, which indicates that the primary motivator for student-athletes is their relationships with teammates and coaches. This finding prompts a reevaluation of coaching practices, urging a shift towards fostering environments where athletes feel valued and supported.Furthermore, Dr. Ramseyer reflects on his personal experiences as a young coach and the mentors who shaped his journey, providing insight into the importance of guidance in the development of effective coaching philosophies. He emphasizes the need for structured training programs for coaches, advocating for a model that includes elements of emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, and community building. The dialogue culminates in discussing Dr. Ramsmer's forthcoming publications and ongoing research endeavors, which aim to explore the dynamics of team culture and athlete motivation. Ultimately, Dr. Ramsmer's vision for the future of coaching prioritizes character development and relational engagement, striving to cultivate a generation of athletes who are not only skilled in their sports but also well-rounded individuals equipped to navigate life's challenges.Takeaways: The Impact Coaching Project aims to cultivate coaches who emphasize the holistic development of student-athletes, transcending mere performance metrics. Dr. Rob Ramseyer's insights reveal that relationships significantly motivate athletes, with teammates and family taking precedence over coaches. Coaches today must adapt to a changing landscape where information and social media influence young athletes' perceptions and expectations. A successful coaching culture prioritizes competence, care, and consistent character in building strong relationships with athletes. The evolution of youth sports has led to increased pressures on athletes and families, necessitating a more thoughtful approach to coaching and mentorship. Rob's reflections on mentorship emphasize the profound impact that...

Today's podcast features sports performance coach, Vern Gambetta, owner of Gambetta Training Systems. Vern is a globally respected leader in sports performance training, with over five decades of experience in coaching and consulting across multiple sports. Gambetta has profoundly influenced the field of athletic development, and his innovative approaches to functional movement, strength training, and sport-specific conditioning have shaped the practices of coaches, trainers, and athletes worldwide. It's interesting to think of the idea of “nothing new under the sun”, in physical training. Vern has been through half a century of training means and methods, using methods both popular and forgotten. So often in our own training and coaching journies, we look back and think “That was a great training series, I should do that again”! In this episode, Vern speaks on complex training (although as he mentions, he just calls it training), getting into spectrum training, and the evolution of his leg circuits. He talks about his history with isometric training, along with PNF concepts that are highly effective, but forgotten by many performance coaches. He also gets into priming and potentiation, rhythmic aspects in training, looking at training transfer through the lens of track and field, and much more in today's episode. In this replay from 2019, John talks with Ted Kroeten (@Joyofthepeople), founder of Joy of the People, a free play soccer program in Minnesota. Kroeten leads the way in rethinking and delivering player development always championing kids and possibilities based on his experienced, dedicated, and innovative soccer career. Joy of the People's mission statement provides a clear idea of what they're attempting to provide:   To support the idea of play as an important part of a child's development, to build small soccer spaces for kids to play, to serve disadvantaged youth, and to build community spirit.   Here are some highlights from the Podcast: What happened when free play was introduced into practice? How does the now defunct idea of “10,000 hours” play into free play and increasing performance? An amazing story of a soccer club famed for youth player development, with numerous expensive player transfers, yet they sign their players after the age of 16  The younger teams get beat in competition, but how does it work out when they get older? There is a time for structure, when is that time? What is going on with the athlete that did not grow up in the academy setting but blows away those who grew up in the deliberate practice environment? How can you add free play into your performance development practice plan? What are “kid micro-clubs”?     Connect with Ted Kroeten Website:  www.joyofthepeople.org Email: Ted@joyofthepeople.org Twitter: @JOYofthePEOPLE LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ted-kroeten-3114a27/   Resources Mentioned  Article on Dynamo Zagreb Academy Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World, by David Epstein [book] The debate between Epstein and Gladwell [video] Explorations in Language Acquisition and Use, by Stephen Krashen [book] How to Become a Transformational Coach with Jean Cote, World-Renowned Expert in Youth Sports and Coach Development [podcast]   OUR NEW BOOK IS AVAILABLE FOR PREORDER! Dr. Jason Penry, Founder of Penry Advisors, spent years working in fundraising in college athletics and on campus in general. Not long ago, he decided to start a business based on the concepts he learned during his career raising money.  "involvement precedes investment, almost always" relationships work across all industries doing things for the greater good makes it easier to put in the time never promise something you can't deliver Before branching out on his own, Penry used the same concepts to help start a medical school in the state of Arkansas. He also notes that the pace of athletics fundraising is far more urgent, in terms of immediate use, than academic fundraising. - One Question Leadership Podcast - Tai M. Brown

He is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, a Certified Athletic Trainer, and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist who has worked with countless A-List celebrities, professional athletes, as well as the general population.  Charlie has been Physical Performance Lead and Head Strength & Conditioning Coach for the Canadian Men's National Basketball Team from 2011-2021, where he was the architect along with Sam Gibbs of the performance program that tops all foreign countries with a over 20 active players in the NBA. He often lectures overseas often, and his relationship with Beijing Yanding Trading Company has brought him through mainland China for the last 5 years. Previous roles Charlie has held have been Nike Executive Performance Council, Lead Physical Therapist for the United States Marine Corps Special Operations Command, Head Strength & Conditioning Coach for the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA, and Director of Athletic Development for the Roddick-Grunberg Tennis Academy. In addition to high school sports, he owns the private training business Re-Evolution Athletics. Having good reactivity in the feet carries nuance with it. Some athletes can use their feet exceptionally well for sprinting or straight-ahead pursuits. Others have foot dynamics that allow them a better conversion of horizontal energy to vertical. Ultimately, the goal is to understand why athletes use their strategies and find areas of improvement specific to the individual. On today's podcast, Rob covers ideas on intersections of sprint and jumps training in track and field, athletic asymmetry, plyometric coaching, speed and power complexes, and a nuanced discussion on the nature of foot placement in sprinting and plyometrics, on the level of both performance and injury prevention. (32:20) “In general, when we're looking at asymmetry with a 1080 or something, like bounding, hopping, whatever, I usually just use, like, a 10% marker. So, like, if that asymmetry is greater than 10% or maybe approaching 10%, maybe we're going to tease in some things to try to get a little bit more of a balance” (42:31) “I've had sprinters who have had crazy good RSi scores. And they come over to the jumps and I'll have them, like, bound or hop, and they're going to have a contact that's more flat or rolling and they just can't do it. It looks like incredibly labored. It's like they just don't want to. They almost refuse to contact that rear part of their foot” (44:30) "Those athletes who struggle accessing that rear part of their foot, they were more prone to hamstring injuries."
