The HKTDC Hong Kong Book Fair drew to a successful close on the 20th of July. More than 250 cultural events were held on-site during the fair period, including the Theme of the Year: “Inspiring the Mind and Refreshing the Soul” Seminar Series, the Renowned Writers Seminar Series, and seminars under the theme English and International Reading.

Adopting “Inspirational and Motivational Reading” as the Theme of the Year with the tagline “Reading the World • Inspiring the Mind and Refreshing the Soul”, this year's Book Fair introduces some of the best inspirational authors and books of this genre to readers, aiming to bring Hong Kong citizens together and encourage them to seek out motivational books that can empower them to face the challenges ahead, and to emerge stronger after the pandemic. Theme of the year: Sci-Fi and Mystery “Reading the World • When Fantasy Meets Reality”. The 30th Hong Kong Book Fair, organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), held from 17 to 23 July 2019 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. More than 680 exhibitors from 39 countries and territories gathered at this annual summer cultural extravaganza.

The Hong Kong Book Fair made the summer of 2018 a romantic one. With the theme of the year “Romantic Literature”, this popular event showcased in the thematic exhibition “Love between the Lines”, featuring famous Hong Kong romance novel writers before and after 1990s. The 29th edition of the Hong Kong Book Fair held concurrently with the 2nd edition of the Hong Kong Sports and Leisure Expo from 18 to 24 July 2018, offering the public a one-stop fairground for empowering mind and body.

Writer, entrepreneur and arts supporter Sir David Tang is being remembered for his contributions to Hong Kong including the popular “Open Forum” he hosted at the HKTDC’s annual Hong Kong Book Fair since 2010. Sir David flew the likes of Stephen Fry, Jung Chang, Erica Jong and Frederick Forsyth to Hong Kong to join in lively exchanges, reflected in this sample.

Travel writing was the main theme at this year's Book Fair, one of the most popular events of its kind in Hong Kong with over one million visitors. This year's event saw close to 30 countries take part in a "Cultural Village" while popular writers discussed their adventures and latest works.

Sara Wheeler is a prize-winning non-fiction writer behind international bestseller Terra Incognita, which tells the story of a seven-month journey in Antarctica, as well as The Magnetic North: Notes from the Arctic Circle (winner of the Banff Adventure Travel Prize). Ms Wheeler spoke to the HKTDC ahead of her appearance at the July 2017 Hong Kong Book Fair.

The 28th HKTDC Hong Kong Book Fair will be held from 19- 25 July at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. A central theme of the 2017 event will be travel, with an international lineup of authors scheduled to attend.

Author and journalist Wilbur Smith describes writing as “a solitary business” to create characters in his historical fiction works. There weren’t only the books to peruse at the Hong Kong Book Fair 2015. A larger Japanese Pavilion featured Canadian-born “rakugo” (comic storytelling) exponent Katsura Sunshine, who entertained audiences kneeling on a cushion with only a fan and hand towel for props. In this podcast he says the Book Fair demonstrated Hong Kong people’s love of language.

Hong Kong’s name evoked very powerful visual connotations before he saw it, says Booker Prize-winning writer Ben Okri. But the Nigeria-born novelist and poet says that on his first visit to the SAR he has been astonished by the sheer number of people he saw at the Book Fair; seeing the city provoked him to write a poem. Mr Okri was among a star-studded cast of international writers attending the fair, including Alain de Botton, Simon Sebag Montefiore and Carol Thatcher.

Carol Thatcher is the author of several bestselling books, including Below the Parapet, a biography of her late father, Sir Denis Thatcher, on life as the Iron Lady's husband and as the first male consort in 10 Downing Street. The daughter of the late British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, will take part in the open public forums set for 17 and 18 July.

Historian Simon Sebag Montefiore is among the high-profile speakers coming to the 2015 HKTDC Hong Kong Book Fair, 15-21 July. Simon Sebag Montefiore is behind such bestselling books as Jerusalem, Young Stalin and Catherine the Great. He will take part in the open public forums set for 17 and 18 July, moderated by Sir David Tang.

Renowned author and philosopher Alain de Botton is among the high-profile speakers coming to the 2015 HKTDC Hong Kong Book Fair, 15-21 July. The author of 14 bestselling books, including Essays in Love, How Proust Can Change Your Life, The Consolations of Philosophy, and Religion for Atheists, will take part in the open public forums set for 17 and 18 July, moderated by Sir David Tang.
