Did you know that humans are a type of lobe-finned fish!? Turns out our story begins 400 million years ago, when some very special fishies began making the move from sea to land, and we want to talk about it!! Dr Alice Clement heads up the Early Vertebrate Evolution Lab at Flinders University and has dedicated her career to understanding this history of life on Earth ... how the evolution of fish is the story of our own beginnings, too.Alice joins us in the studio for a conversation about her first fieldwork at the GoGo Formation in the Kimberley - one of the most extraordinary fossil sites in the world - to the moment she split open a limestone nodule and found a beautifully preserved fish inside (now on display at Melbourne Museum!). Alice brings the joy of discovery into every corner of this fun episode. One of our favourite moments was when she walked us through her favourite fossil - an Elpistostege - a predatory fishapod from a famous site in Quebec that Alice then helped image using high-powered X-rays. The x-rays revealed finger bones, hidden inside a fish's fin, that are anatomically equivalent to your own. How good! And we get the full story of Materpiscis, the pregnant fish with a fossilised embryo and umbilical cord still intact, whose species name is Attenborough (yes, the Sir David...). Alice is a wonderful guest, and this won't be the last time you hear her on Wonder. Thanks to the Geological Society of Australia for making this episode of Wonder possible!Find us at www.thegeoco.com.auInstagram & TikTok: @thegeocoSign up for GeoCo News on Substack: thegeoco.substack.comGeoCo comes to you from the traditional country of the Kaurna people of the Adelaide Plains, South Australia. Good morning. If you live to be one hundred, will you still be the same person inside who you've always been? Will the same things still make you laugh? Will you remember the best moments of your life…and the worst? Will you still care about the world and will it still care about you, if you live to be one hundred? Let's ask Sir David Attenborough, who today reaches one hundred. He's helped create some of the most beloved and respected nature programmes ever made. But he's a mere whippersnapper in comparison with some of the antediluvian patriarchs from the book of Genesis. There is Methuselah, of course, who is listed as living 969 years. He appears in the genealogy from Adam to Noah, who only lived for 950 years. After the flood, the patriarchs got younger. Moses, for example, only lived for a mere 120 years. There are symbolic and literary interpretations for why these men were described as being extraordinarily long-lived. These stories tell us that ageing should not be feared but revered. That the older a person was, the more respected they were, the more important they were, and crucially, the closer they were to God. Today, ageing is more feared than ever before. We have an obsession with artificially preserving youth to an unnatural degree, as if ageing were a shameful secret. The middle-aged are spoken of with a hint of derision. Our parents dismissed as privileged, clueless boomers. And the generation before them? Silent. Of course, old age doesn't always lead to wisdom, but anti-ageing rhetoric, however subtle, does lead to a disquieting erosion of worth. To see the elderly as God sees them would be to regard ageing as a privilege, and to see those older than us as repositories of wisdom and experience, instead of a burden on public resources. It is the elderly who engage most in public service, making up an army of volunteers who do everything from maintaining communal outdoor space, helping run various social groups, and caring for grandchildren. They are the custodians of the Christian faith, valued elders who play a vital role in the life of the church. Psalm 92 speaks of cedars planted in the house of the Lord, how in old age they're still green and produce fruit. In every community there are to be found inspiring archetypes of ageing. We place all our hopes in the young, for they represent the future, but our elders don't just belong to the past, they are the present too. They still have the ability to take the world by surprise. Happy 100th birthday Sir David. If I live to be one hundred, may I too be green and full of fruit.
And while still a part of the KPFA-FM Drama and Literature Department, I am also gleaning programs for our new small, tiny-at-the-moment station-that-could. Next up in the studio is Sir David Attenborough with his new book, ‘The Private Life of Plants'. I'm more than on home ground and the book is a breeze for me. Sir David is a good old pro.
If you aren't aware, the legendary Sir David Attenborough - turned 100 years old today ... with many well-wishers from around the globe. The broadcaster and naturalist has been the gateway through which so many of us have experienced the delights of planet earth. One of our own local nature loving legends has been reflecting on the influence Attenborough had on him. Rudd Kleinpaste, also know as the bug man, joins Emile to talk about what him and Sir David talked about when they met a few years ago.
It was one of the most memorable days of my life. January, 2010. We'd been out most of the day on assignment, leaving Scott Base early in the morning and flying by helicopter across McMurdo Sound to a research team at the McMurdo Dry Valleys, the largest ice-free area in Antarctica. Having filmed for a few hours, we took off again and tracked the edge of Ross Island, flying low to watch the frenzy of activity on the edge of the continent below. Penguins, seals, whales, feeding in the summer thaw. At Cape Bird we used another battery or two and a tape, filming with the tens of thousands of mating pairs at the Adelie penguin colony. So many birds! So much bird shit. We flew home, skirting around the base of Mt Erebus, epic and stark. I was in a daze. But as the helicopter wound down and we unloaded our gear at Scott Base, the staff on the ground were in a flutter. “You're not going to believe who's visiting for dinner,” someone said. He was standing in the Scott Base bar, holding court. I remember him being surrounded by a half-dozen people, hanging on each word. I meekly approached his producer and cleared my throat. “I'm really sorry to bother you...” I said. “My name's Jack Tame and I'm a reporter with Television New Zealand... I just wondered if it might be possible, if it wasn't too much of an inconvenience, if Sir David might consider maybe doing an interview with us while he's here?” “I dunno...” said the producer. “Just ask him yourself.” I clumsily reached out my hand and repeated my speech. “If it's not too much trouble... if I'm not asking too much...” “I'd be happy to,” said Sir David Attenborough. “...on one condition.” “Of course.” “We bring this bottle of wine.” And so it came to be that after what had already been maybe the single most special day of my journalistic career, I found myself sitting in the Scott Base lounge, with a bottle of red wine, musing over the miracle of life with Sir David Attenborough. Just outside the base windows, whales broke through the melting sea ice and puffed through their blowholes as we cycled through subjects: Filmmaking. Climate science. The existence of God. I can think of no single person, ever, who has done more to shape our understanding of the natural world. No person who has done more to foster our sense of wonder. Across his 100 years, his broadcasts and storytelling have reached and affected billions of people across the planet. How many broadcasters, filmmakers, biologists, ecologists, marine and climate scientists were inspired to pursue their passion because of Sir David Attenborough? His is the voice of the natural world. And as the world celebrates his yet another achievement, 100 years, I gratefully reflect on that late afternoon in Antarctica. For one of us, it was extraordinary encounter in an otherwise pretty unremarkable life. For the other, it was an unremarkable encounter in an undoubtedly extraordinary life. The extraordinary life. And as I wrapped our filming and he headed off to find his spot for dinner, I shook Sir David's hand and spoke the truest words I could. Thank you, I said. For everything, I said. Thank you. Monarch butterflies crossing a continent. Peregrine falcons above Manhattan. A giant lemur most of the world had never heard of, until one man pointed a camera at it. For seventy years, Sir David Attenborough has been asking us to look - really look - at the world we share with three and a half billion years' worth of other life. This week, Christiana Figueres, Tom Rivett-Carnac, and Paul Dickinson mark the 100th birthday of the world's longest-serving television presenter. To celebrate, they're reaching into the archives to share the very first episode of the podcast - a conversation recorded in person with their friend Sir David himself, at the Attenborough Centre in Cambridge in 2019.They also take stock of seven years of Outrage + Optimism, and on a world that's changed since that first episode dropped. What's moved faster than anyone expected, what's gone sideways, and what still keeps us at night? Then Sir David. On why young people's outrage is entirely justified. On what the natural world actually needs from us. On the rare moments in history when nations chose agreement over conflict. And on why understanding might be the thing that saves us.Learn More:

Sir David Attenborough is one of the most celebrated broadcasters and naturalists on the planet in part because he has been promoting all aspects of the natural world for 80 years. He will soon celebrate his 100th birthday and recently shared a dietary change he has made which migt help explain his longevity. He has stopped eating red meat. This is something that many people in blue zones (those areas where many of the population enjoy health into their 90s and beyond) also do. Now thats not to say that Sir David has become a vegetarian or vegan , he hasn't, as he still consumes fish but there are proven benefits to reducing meat consumption , especially processed meat especially as we age. People are facing increased financial strain as funeral costs rise, according to the Quaker Social Action charity. One of the unexpected bills that hits people at this vulnerable moment is the high burial charge some local authorities demand if the person who has died lives in another borough, even if they are geographically close by. As part of our series on young people and religious revivals, we are looking at the increase in new members of the Orthodox Church in the UK and ask whether online influencers or 'Orthobros' are one of the reasons behind the rise. As Brooklyn Peltz Beckham says he doesn't want to reconcile with his family, we explore what faith leaders say about forgiveness, reconciliation and familial estrangement. His parents, Sir David and Lady Victoria Beckham, haven't officially responded. Every week she steers her team of editors and writers through the creation of dozens of pages of magazine features, with hardly a glitch and never, ever a missed deadline. So when Country Life brings in a guest editor — something which has happened five times in the past 12 years — it's Paula who is at the helm alongside our temporary boss. It's a process of helping, guiding, steering, commissioning and editing in tandem with whoever is at the helm, a challenge which has been taken up in the past by Her Majesty Queen Camilla, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, His Majesty The King (twice), and most recently Sir David Beckham.Paula joins James Fisher on the Country Life Podcast this week to talk about her experiences with these very special issues. The focus is on the eight-month journey with Sir David, from first contact and brainstorming through to the joyous final product, but she also talks about her experiences with our Royal guest editor. It's a fascinating and rare insight into the guest-edits of the magazine that we've been thrilled, delighted and privileged to have worked on.Episode creditsHost: James FisherGuest: Paula MinchinEditor and producer: Toby KeelMusic: JuliusH via Pixabay Hosted on Acast. Sir David Hare is one of the UK's most prolific and successful playwrights, and in this episode he talks to Gyles first about theatre, about great actors, and about the sensitivity necessary to writing drama; he also talks about his unusual childhood - his father was in the merchant navy and was rarely at home, his mother was resourceful and talented but also fearful and anxious. He talks about the teachers who helped inspire him to read and broaden his horizons. He talks about his relationship with the fashion designer Nicole Farhi, and about his new play Grace Pervades, which is about the Victorian actor Sir Henry Irving and his relationship with the great actress Ellen Terry. This is a wide-ranging conversation, bristling with honesty and self-awareness. Thank you Sir David for your time, energy and brilliant stories - we really were honoured to speak to you on Rosebud. It's the fourth anniversary of the murder of Sir David Amess, the Conservative MP who was killed by an Islamic State sympathiser during a surgery in his Southend constituency. At Prime Minister's Questions this lunchtime, Sir Keir Starmer paid tribute to a “much-loved”, “kind” and “generous” man and talked of the “huge loss” many across the house still feel.Watching on from her home in Los Angeles was Sir David's daughter, Katie, and she tells Camilla Tominey and Tim Stanley on today's Daily T of her disgust at hearing the Prime Minister paying such a fulsome tribute when he'd “ignored (her) letters” and had been “so disrespectful” after she'd “pleaded with him to hold an inquiry” into the failings that allowed Sir David's murderer to slip through the net.Camilla and Tim also reflect on the questions that still need to be answered about the China spying scandal, as well as Sir Keir calling for a calming of the political rhetoric whilst simultaneously accusing Reform of being “Kremlin cronies”.► Sign up to our most popular newsletter, From the Editor. In this episode of The Evolving Leader, co-hosts Jean Gomes and Scott Allender talk to Sir David Spiegelhalter, one of the world's foremost authorities on risk and probability. David explains why embracing uncertainty, rather than trying to eliminate it is essential for leaders who want to build resilience and make better judgments in complex times.Drawing from his latest book “The Art of Uncertainty”, David shares stories that bring statistics to life, from forecasting failures to the importance of imagination and red-team thinking. This conversation offers both a challenge and a toolkit: how to hold authority while admitting doubt, how to communicate risk with clarity, and how to lead teams toward what he calls ‘safe uncertainty'.
