From a violent East L.A. childhood under an abusive preacher father to stabbing his dad at 16, Joe's rage fueled over 30 audacious bank heists, outwitting the FBI with disguises and body doubles. Solitary confinement nearly broke him, but a transformative correspondence sparked redemption. Now a writer and Hollywood consultant (Baby Driver, Taken), Joe unpacks trauma, toxic masculinity, and the system's role in crafting criminals. Is his redemption real, or is he a pawn in a larger narrative? GUEST: Joe Loya is a former bank robber turned acclaimed writer and Hollywood consultant. Growing up in East L.A. under a violently abusive Christian minister father, Joe's trauma culminated in stabbing his father at 16, igniting a path to crime. In the late '80s and early '90s, he robbed over 30 banks with cunning disguises and high-speed escapes, earning notoriety as California's most elusive outlaw. After two years in solitary confinement, a correspondence with author Richard Rodriguez sparked his transformation. Loya's memoir, The Man Who Outgrew His Prison Cell, and his work on films like Baby Driver and Taken showcase his storytelling, rooted in his youth as a Bible preacher. Featured in The Guardian and CNN, Joe's journey from rage to redemption raises questions about trauma, criminality, and the system's role in shaping both. Joe's remarkable story is the subject of Season Four of the podcast series, The Burden: Get the Moey and Run. July is an incredibly potent and transformative month, acting as both a transitional period and a powerful frequency portal. You might experience moments of confusion, but these are often signs of a sacred initiation, guiding you through a profound shift. This month amplifies the themes of 2025, a 9 universal year in numerology, signifying endings and drastic, dynamic change. Consider what's being stripped away in your life, allowing you to resonate more deeply with your soul essence. Old contracts and conditions that no longer serve your highest good are dissolving. Actionable Wisdom for July: - Prioritize Solitude: Create dedicated time for inner reflection and connection. - Practice Self-Care: Engage in activities that rejuvenate your mind, body, and soul. - Listen to Your Body: Pay close attention to its responses, especially with the heightened energies. - Trust the Dissolving Process: Release what no longer serves you with grace. - Embrace Stillness: This is your anchor amidst the energetic shifts. - Connect with Your Soul: Your inner wisdom and guides are your strongest allies. July itself is a 7 universal month in numerology. The combination of the 9-year and 7-month energy creates a powerful "hermit" archetype. Solitary time is crucial for receiving "aha" and expansive moments. This doesn't mean isolating yourself, but rather consciously creating daily space to go within and rejuvenate. Remember to connect with your soul, your intuition and spirit guides are powerful sources of communication during this time. Key Astrological Dates for July (Part 1): July 4th: Neptune Stations Direct in Aries – This signifies an actionless initiation, where deep inner movement occurs even when you feel still. July 4th: Venus Enters Gemini – This transit brings a playful, flirty energy to love and relationships. It encourages creativity and a willingness to let your desires change. July 7th: Uranus Enters Gemini – Expect a profound upgrade to the collective nervous system and a significant surge of energy. Stillness and self-care are paramount to avoid feeling overwhelmed. July 10th: Full Moon in Capricorn (4:37 PM ET) – This powerful full moon illuminates what burdens and responsibilities you might be carrying that were never truly yours. This is also an excellent time to revisit your long-term vision (5-10 years) and ensure your daily routines align with your desired legacy. Ready to embrace the transformative energies of July? Listen up, Listen in! We continue telling our New Afrikan Ourstory 365 as we make a pivot from our conversation about some of the negative and dehumanizing music/lyrics and images targeting our young Afrikans – due to some of the original participants of that conversation unable to join us – to an organic unfolding conversation about some of the current events of interest. The privilege of being in conversation with and hearing from the New Afrikan Elder Political Prisoners who survived one of most horrific forms of domestic torture – decades of solitary confinement (extreme sensory deprivation) meant to break them – cannot be overstated. They bring to us a body of knowledge, political analysis, social commentary and perspective, unique and unmatched in its scope, its depth and its simple humanness. In this episode of The Biggest Table, I converse with Michael Beck, a pastor, professor, and author, about experiencing God's love through community, especially in unconventional settings like tattoo parlors, dog parks, and burrito shops. Michael shares his personal story of childhood trauma, addiction, and solitary confinement, and how he found community and redemption. They discuss the benefits of 12-step recovery programs in fostering deep, supportive relationships and explore how these principles can be applied to build inclusive, loving, and spiritually nourishing communities. The conversation touches on the themes from Michael's recent book, 'Never Alone,' the epidemic of loneliness, and practical steps to create meaningful connections in today's digital and often isolating world.Michael Beck is a pastor, professor, author, and one of the rare leaders bridging frontline ministry with academic scholarship. Alongside his wife Jill, he has led multiple revitalizations and planted unconventional faith communities among those often overlooked. They currently serve as co-pastors of Compassion and St. Mark's UMCs, where they lead Open Arms Village, a holistic recovery housing program, and oversee a network of fresh expressions—worshiping communities that gather in places like tattoo parlors, dog parks, burrito shops, EV charging stations, digital spaces, and recovery centers. Beck also serves as Director of Fresh Expressions Florida, Director of the Fresh Expressions House of Studies at Perkins School of Theology at SMU, and Director of Fresh Expressions. His most recent book, Never Alone, explores how churches can address the epidemic of loneliness with the Gospel's radical promise of community. Do I join a coven or do I practice the craft alone? This is likely a crossroads each practitioner encounters at least once. Even if you never find or formally join a coven, it's still something you'll probably even just hear or read about. The first book I ever read to begin studying witchcraft was gifted to me, and it was called, Spells for the Solitary Witch by Eileen Holland. In it Holland describes the path of the solitary witch in contrast to practicing with a coven, so early on this was something I was pondering myself. In today's episode of That Witch Podcast, we'll cover the basics of what to consider in all aspects of this question, and talk about both sides of this spectrum, and some of the in between areas as well. And hopefully, you'll leave this episode feeling more informed and in-tune with your unique needs as a modern witch.★|| T H E N E I G H B O R H O O D ||YouTube: That Witch Next DoorEmail Newsletter: thatwitchnextdoor.comInstagram: @thatwitch.nextdoorTikTok: @thatwitch.nextdoorPinterest: @thatwitchdaniContact: thatwitchnextdoor.com/conjurethatwitch

Should death row prisoners have the right to demand to be executed? In her debut book The Volunteer, Bay Area journalist Gianna Toboni exposes the absurd bureaucratization of the American death penalty system through the story of Scott Dozier, a death row inmate who volunteered for execution. Convicted of two murders on circumstantial evidence, Dozier preferred death to living 22-24 hours daily in a cell. Despite his and the state's shared goal of execution, bureaucratic delays and legal challenges prevented it. Toboni describes how extended solitary confinement undermined Dozier's mental health, eventually leading to his suicide, which she suggests was effectively state-induced. Toboni questions whether Americans truly understand the monstrously inefficient system they fund, where death sentences cost ten times more than life imprisonment yet only 15% of death row inmates are actually executed.FIVE TAKEAWAYS IN THIS CONVERSATION WITH TOBONI* The death penalty system is dysfunctional: Despite sentencing people to death, states like Nevada rarely carry out executions (the last one in Nevada was in 2006), creating a system where people are sentenced but left in limbo—only about 15% of death row inmates are ever executed.* Solitary confinement conditions are severe: Dozier was kept in conditions Toboni describes as "psychological torture"—up to 24 hours a day in a small cell, without human contact, reading materials, or other stimulation, which severely deteriorated his mental health.* Death row inmates face higher suicide rates: The suicide rate on death row is approximately 10 times higher than in general prison population, suggesting the conditions push many to take their own lives rather than continue living in those circumstances.* The financial argument is compelling: Death penalty cases cost approximately 10 times more than life imprisonment cases, yet most sentences are never carried out, raising questions about resource allocation.* Humanizing the condemned complicates perspectives: Toboni's experience showed how meeting death row inmates and understanding their full life stories—not just their crimes—can complicate black-and-white views on capital punishment, even for those who oppose it on principle.Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. In this week's sermon, we continue our series "Last Words." This week we look at the 3rd and 4th statements that Jesus makes from the cross that show his solitary state in the midst of his death. It is important to look at and contemplate this in order to grasp the gravity of the crucifixion in order to grasp the gravity of the resurrection. We cannot have one without the other, as easy or more pleasant as it might be to rush the cross in order to get to the empty tomb. We're glad that you made it to this sermon! We covered three events, all occurring at 11 AM. We talk with Jerome Wright Co-Director of the Halt Solitary campaign in the 2nd floor war room; Rachel Fauss of Reinvent Albany who was part of a coalition on the fourth floor outside the Senate Gallery calling to overhaul the state's Freedom of Information laws; and Dr. Oliver Fein of Physicians for a National Health Program with the NY Health Campaign on the Million Dollar Staircase on the third floor. Sometimes life is messy. It can be tempting to bypass these uncomfortable moments when you're trying to follow a spiritual path. But living a spiritual life doesn't mean ignoring your true feelings during times of struggle, if anything, spirituality encourages us to be even more honest about how we're showing up from moment to moment. As the world continues to become more uncertain, we must find trust and support in our communities. Solitary practices are powerful, but it's time to embrace the coven! Gathering in community for mundane and magical moments helps us to stay connected to our humanity and our spirituality. As we listen to the birds sing on this cloudy day, let's get curious about growing the communities in our lives. Tonight we follow the thought of Saint Isaiah, the Solitary and St. John Cassian on the struggle with the passion of lust and fornication. One things stands out clearly: we must be fully engaged in the formation of the mind and the heart in virtue - for the devil is fully engaged in seeking to provoke us to sin. Therefore, we must guard all of the senses with great attentiveness. With this particular passion, we must engage in the battle both physically and spiritually. Thus, we must be attentive to both prayer and fasting; that is, humbling the mind and the body in such a way that we turn to God for our nourishment and strength. In shaping the habit of virtue, we must study the scriptures, engage in fervent prayer, and labor with our hands; in other words, we must keep our focus simple in order that we might be aware of what is going on within the heart. Cassian makes it clear that the heart is the place where the disease is hidden – the depths of the soul. Yet, it is also here that the remedy is found. We must open our heart fully to God by guarding the senses and directing all of our energies towards the formation of virtue and the love of the things of the kingdom. Humility is the foundation of all of these pursuits. In it, we recognize our poverty and so cling to God. As we cling to him, we experienced that he alone can bring not only healing where there has only been sin but also fill the heart with the love that he alone can satisfy. --- Text of chat during the group: 00:02:12 Anna Lalonde: Hello!
