After a rather innocuous fall, resulting in a broken spine, 3 prolapsed discs and a dislocated pelvis, doctors discovered she had a severe degenerative disc disease and was told she would never be able to do any form of high impact or heavy load exercise again. So she focussed instead on yoga, meditation and her mindset. Within a few months it became apparent that the benefits she gained from practising yoga would not just be physical, but mental. Within 6 months, Alex was stronger physically and mentally than ever before. While she now still endures pain, it is manageable, predominantly, she feels, as a result of having a new positive relationship with her body. She went on to train as a teacher in India and has since travelled the world teaching yoga in some wonderful places. She has also written and created 6 top selling beginners yoga dvds, and reached #1 on the Amazon UK fitness charts.Alex is also a qualified Integrative Psychotherapist and combines her love and knowledge of the holistic world with psychotherapy. She created the Mindset Group Ltd and runs a yearly, very popular wellbeing festival in Wokingham as well as many other wellbeing events - Upcoming events: 1st Feb - Unfiltered Sessions: Winter Reset at South Hill Park, Bracknell, Berkshire For more info www.mindsetunlimited.co.uk www.alexandralegouix.comStay Connected:Follow Oliver on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/yeskingoliverWant to regain control of your life from modern-day stress, anxiety, and influence?Check out my FREE course - take control! http://www.talkwitholiver.com#Tagsself improvement, Time Management, Motivation, mental health, Financial Literacy, Growth Mindset, Personal Development, philosop

Have you ever wondered why, despite all our modern comforts, so many of us still struggle with unhappiness and anxiety? What if a more fulfilling life isn't about constant positivity but rather a form of ‘cheerful pessimism'? Today's guest is Alain de Botton. Alain is the founder of The School of Life, a hugely popular education and wellness organisation that provides guidance on how to achieve happiness and fulfilment. He is also an internationally renowned philosopher and the author of multiple books including his very latest: A Therapeutic Journey: Lessons From The School of Life. In this conversation, we delve deep into the complexities of modern life and the importance of love, empathy and tolerance in addressing societal problems. Alain introduces the concept of ‘attuned care' in childhood and explains why a lack of it can show up in our adult behaviours and relationships. Alain also explains a concept that he calls ‘cheerful pessimism' which challenges what he describes as the modern obsession with happiness and introduces the idea that a more melancholic outlook to life, might actually lead to greater fulfilment. We also discuss the value of inner reflection, the truth about modern anxiety and the importance of effective communication. Throughout this conversation, Alain shares practical tools that we can immediately apply into our lives – such as specific journaling exercises, ‘the 2 chair' technique he has borrowed from Gestalt therapy and simple strategies to help us become better listeners and more effective communicators. This conversation is an invitation to reassess what truly matters in life. Alain's message of hope and understanding about the shared human experience of suffering and complexity is both comforting and inspiring and his thoughtful and practical strategies offer a roadmap for anyone seeking a more authentic and meaningful life. Alain De Botton is one of the greatest philosophers of our time. His work has had a profound impact on me more than any other. I have wanted to do this episode for the last 8 years. In Today's Episode with Alain De Botton We Discuss: 1. Why Status is Making You Miserable: Why are we richer yet more anxious than ever? What is the right way to define status? Why do we want it so much? Is it bad to want status? What are some non-obvious signs that you are seeking status when you do not realise it? Does social media enhance the desire for status? How so? Do the happiest people want status the least? What are Alain's biggest observations in how truly happy people think about status? 2. Why Parents Want You To Fail: Why is the sign of good parenting when your child does not want to be famous? Why do your parents sometimes want you to fail? What should parents do if their child wants to chase an unachievable goal? Why should parents encourage their children to start very early? 3. Why Meritocracy is a Fallacy & Meaningful Work: Why does Alain believe a true meritocracy is an impossible dream? Why is meritocracy a bad thing when taken to the extreme? Why does Alain believe that companies are not families? Why does Alain tell people that they should not bring their full selves to work? 4. WTF is “Meaningful Work”: What does it mean to do “meaningful work”? Why do humans need to do “meaningful work” today in a way that we did not many years ago? What are Alain's biggest pieces of advice to young people today, unsure of what they should do with their lives and careers? Why does Alain believe the idea of a “calling” is BS? 5. Ambition, Achievement and Sacrifice: What does Alain mean when he says “you have to tolerate your own averageness”? What does Alain say to the young generation who want work/life balance? What does Alain mean when he said you “cannot be at war with yourself”? Does Alain agree that to achieve you must sacrifice?

The main points talked about are: - Teaching kids about the business world. For example, they could learn by trading shares. - Understanding how to build healthy relationships with themselves and others. A way to do this is by exploring philosophy. - Learning how to create things. Instead of focusing on music, we could emphasize entrepreneurship and building projects. Alain de Botton views the world in a way that is profound yet easy to understand; a modern-day philosopher and essayist, he set up the School of Life, which explores self-understanding and aims to educate people on the aspects of life we don't get taught at school - like relationships, careers, anxiety, ageing and so much more. I had the honour of sitting down with Alain to chat, and am so pleased it was recorded as I'll be listening back to this episode aplenty. What is love? How do we navigate heartbreak? Why is our childhood so informant on the rest of our lives? How do we sit with ourselves? And while we're at it - what actually is the meaning of life? Alain talks me through why we experience the ‘ick', the emotional burdens parents project onto their children, and how breakdowns can be breakthroughs. He also helps me understand better my own relationship, examining how attachment styles and past experiences can shape the way we love. This conversation is rich in kindness and full of appreciation for the complexities of being a human. In this moment, world-renowned philosopher and thinker Alain De Botton discusses how communication can lead to a better sex life. Alain says sex is like a mirror to the relationship as a whole. If something is wrong with a couples sex life, it's usually a symptom of a wider problem. He says that a first step towards a more fulfilling sex life is reflecting on how you are as a partner. Being open about yourself in a relationship is the best way to create mutual trust, which means that you can ‘tease' out any issue in a relationship. This then leads to being open with one another sexually. Alain de Botton (School of Life founder; author) has written 15 books about the philosophy of living – such as The Art of Travel; Status Anxiety; Art as Therapy; and The Course of Love – but he has recently turned his focus to mental health and how philosophy can be used as a therapeutic aid. Alain argues that a mental breakdown can provide the opening a despairing soul seeks. Indeed, anxiety so often is its own fix.We sat down in WeAre8's London office for this two-way conversation about the philosophical wisdoms we personally use to have a life of meaning in the face of despair. To mark the end of a wonderful series, I am joined by the insightful Alain de Botton, an author, respected philosopher and founder of The School of Life. Get ready for a journey through the history of psychotherapy, the nuances of the true and false self, and the power of the inner child. In this episode, we discuss: The Gift of the Modern Age: Unveiling the History of Psychotherapy We explore the evolution of psychotherapy as a novel concept in the modern age, delving into its transformative power as both an idea and a treatment. Breaking patterns of intergenerational trauma could have a profound effect on the state of the modern world. Writer Alain de Botton believes love – or a lack thereof – is at the heart of our personal and societal issues. In this chat with Fearne, Alain explains why so-called ‘attention seekers' are precisely the people who need to be wrapped in love and attention. He also talks about why our defence mechanisms usually have real logic behind them, and why we should be curious about other peoples' odd characteristics rather than getting frustrated by them. Plus, he answers the simplest and most complex of questions: what actually is a healthy mind? Alain's book, A Therapeutic Journey: Lessons From the School of Life is out now. Hosted on Acast. Continuing our love and relationships series, we revisit my chat with the incredible Alain de Botton. One of the most listened episodes on Slo Mo, I and the British-Swiss philosopher, Alain de Botton, dive deep into one of my favorite topics: Love. Alain de Botton is a philosopher and writer of essayistic books that have been described as a "philosophy of everyday life." He's written on love, travel, architecture and literature. His books have been bestsellers in 30 countries and have sold millions of copies. Alain also started and helps to run a school in London called The School of Life, dedicated to a new vision of education. His latest book, published in September 2019, is a collection of essays written for The School of Life, titled The School of Life: An Emotional Education.I love talking about love, just as much as I'm happy to discuss happiness. Alain's body and scope of work is so vast, I decided to focus this conversation entirely on love, sex, and relationships. I'm so glad I did.We will revisit:What is love? Alain's definition of love: 'when two people meet in their raw condition.'How the opposite extreme of love is Loneliness, not Hatred. How Life is a desperate emergency, and if we can just admit that, things open up.Why Christianity gives a privileged role to those who sufferOne of the most honest takes on sex you'll ever hearHow we're always trying to get our life as close as possible to our true realityIf we're all imperfect, doesn't that make imperfection perfect? How we've replaced happiness with "fun" just as we've replaced love with "romance"The contradictions in love and how they're only glaring because they violate a script or story we expect from our relationshipHow we shouldn't be held accountable for what we feel, but rather the actions we take based on those feelings.Reinterpreting the typical disaster scenario in a relationship when one partner cheats on another.Humanity's transition from demonizing sex to trying to understand itThe differences (or lack thereof) between male and female in love and sexSexual fetishes and their unique place in couple connectionsUndertakers and nurses as beacons of acceptanceThe game of life is trying to find connectionsThe ironic outcome of jealousy's intentionsHow to keep your partner faithfulAlain's love advice to my daughterCoping with the feeling of being rushed into marriage as a womanWhat "God is love" really meansSeeing your partner as an Adorable Idiot rather than just a regular idiotConnect with Alain de Botton on Twitter @alaindebotton and alaindebotton.comYouTube: @mogawdatofficialInstagram: @mo_gawdatLinkedIn: /in/mogawdatWebsite: mogawdat.comDon't forget to subscribe to Slo Mo for new episodes every Saturday. Joining Sarah Grynberg is prolific author, philosopher and creator of the School Of Life Alain de Botton, who is not only the brain behind 15 internationally bestselling books, but a man who strives to understand the meaning of life. In this eye-opening conversation, Alain and Sarah discuss the force and impact that love can have throughout life, how a person's mental breakdown is not the end of their life but often the beginning, and how childhood experiences, no matter how traumatic, don't have to define a person if they work to nurture their wellbeing. This episode encourages us to explore a deeper understanding of ourselves, our relationships, and why we should be seeking fulfilment not happiness.Alain de Botton is an author and philosopher, known for co-founding The School of Life in 2008. The School of Life was created to fill a void in our current education systems with the teaching of emotional intelligence. Alain's work also focuses on love, parenthood, mental health and the meaning of success. During this episode, Jake, Damian and Alain dive deep into each of these subjects, exploring what a life filled with the constant search for knowledge could look like. Alain shares what we can learn from our mental health struggles and how they can be revealing a deeper truth. This conversation highlights how important it is to lean into uncomfortable emotions to truly understand ourselves. Alain challenges Jake and Damian's perceptions of what high performance really looks like, debating whether the fight for success actually leads to a good life, and why we should be embracing averageness. Within this conversation they discuss why we're obsessed with fame, how to be a better parent, the benefits of a breakdown and how we can improve our relationships. This episode is a replay with the brilliant Alain de Botton. He is a writer of multiple books described as a ‘philosophy of everyday life.' His first book, Essays in Love, was published when he was twenty-three and went on to sell millions of copies. He is also the co-founder of The School of Life, one of my favourite platforms, which is an education space dedicated to a new vision of education, emotional intelligence and self-knowledge. The School of Life's latest book, is called A Simpler Life: a guide to greater serenity, ease, and clarity and came out in January 2022, which I really recommend. Welcome to ‘Me Time', Alonement's new, weekly series of 10-minute mini episodes from the archives. We'll be showcasing the very best wisdom from some of our favourite former guests, in bitesize episodes designed for those smaller pockets of Alonement that you get throughout your day. I'm kicking off with a slice of Alonement history: an excerpt from the episode with philosopher, author & School of Life founder Alain de Botton, originally recorded in November 2019. It was actually the first ever episode I recorded of this podcast, and one of the few I got to record in person ahead of the pandemic – at Alain's office in north London. This recording happened at a time where I was still shaping my own understanding of alonement, and why it matters. Alain was challenging, in a way that proved invaluable. There's no instant magic in taking time alone, he argued. Long periods of time alone won't lead to self-knowledge, just like that. Essentially, we need to think about what we're doing in that alone time, and make sure we're spending that time in a conscious way - in order to make it ALONEMENT. In this clip, he takes us through a practical exercise we can do when we're alone: an exercise that involves asking ourselves hard questions about our relationships, our career, and our friends – in order to work out who we are, and what we want; to tune into our intuition, rather than let our major life decisions be dictated by external influences. *Updated with corrected audio* Back when the "New Atheism" was ceasing to be "new", there was much talk and debate as to what would come next. Alain de Botton, author of "Religion for Atheists" advocated a controversial "Atheism 2.0" in which he suggested there should be "temples for atheism". He discussed these views with then recently-converted Christian academic James Orr. Do the trappings of religion make sense without the kernel of faith? What does romance have to do with true crime? Anyone who's fallen prey to coercive control, stalking, cat-fishing or domestic violence will know that the fantasies we're taught about romance can be very damaging when it comes to resisting overbearing partners and recognising red flags. British philosopher and author Alain de Botton wrote the seminal book on the topic in 2016. It's called 'The Course of Love' and Meshel interviewed him way back then about the surprisingly inorganic and unrealistic origins of romance. Surprise! It's yet another convention we've invented ourselves that's impossible to live up to and leads to lots of heartache. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/australiantruecrime. While in the original conversation we included the entire talk of Botton's, his sections are condensed in this audio to the most important parts.
