Raiders of the Podcast

This week... Insurmountable obstacles, unfortunate events, and darker obsessions collide in four films about love that wounds and scars and ends unavoidably tragic.     When a young woman is found murdered after leaving his house, down on his luck and violently tempered screenwriter Dix finds himself squarely in the police's frame. Only the testimony of his beautiful neighbor keeps him from immediate arrest. As his prosecution drags out, a relationship between them blooms. Can the blossoming relationship withstand the suspicions and outside glances? Did Dix succumb to his rage fueled impulses and will he do it again? An existential noir masterpiece with a towering lead performance, In a Lonely Place.     In the summer of 1972, young Vada Sultenfuss lives with her widowed father. Vada has a tendency toward hypochondria and a fascination with death, likely from losing her mother at birth and growing up in the town funeral parlor. This summer, Vada begins growing into her own and suffers many of life's first times. Widely considered a classic of the 1990s with a pair of fantastic child lead performances and a final act that scared a generation, My Girl.     Young Douzi is abandoned by his mother at a Peking Opera troupe. His youth is spent training to play dan, female lead, roles while his best friend, Shitou, learns jing, heroic male roles. From the brutal violence of their training, the oppressive occupation of the Second Sino-Japanese War, and the crushing repression of the Cultural Revolution, Douzi and Shitou's relationship carries them through 50 years. Beautifully shot, delicately edited, and widely considered one of the best films produced in Mainland China, Farewell My Concubine.     Two households, both alike in dignity, in fair Verona Beach, where we lay our scene, from ancient grudge break new mutiny... the star-crossed lovers draw the conclusion of Baz Luhrmann's Red Curtain Trilogy of theatrical motif. Hyper stylized with an energy that has few equals and a cast that matches it beat for beat, The Bard's most well known work's third major film adaption that still brings tears of joy to long suffering High School English teachers everywhere... William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet.     All that and Dave loses a letter, Tyler feels new emotions in a fetal positions, and Kevin likes to watch... everything. Join us, won't you?   Episode 410- Love That Scars

· morality /məˈræləti/ n. They often performed in churches or public spaces (经常在教堂或公共场所上演).The French Renaissance (法国文艺复兴) brought a revival of classical themes and structures (带来了古典主题和结构的复兴), influenced by Greek and Roman models (受希腊和罗马模式的影响). · theater n. 戏剧古希腊戏剧主要分为两种类型:tragedy(悲剧),一般是关于human suffering(人类经历的痛苦);comedy(喜剧),经常非常讽刺(satirical)。 · martial /ˈmɑ:rʃ(ə)l/ adj. 尚武的文戏一般主题是和social life(社会生活)有关,通过dialogue(对白)和lyrics(唱词)来讲一段故事,传达角色情感。 西方歌剧在表演过程中focus on(注重)powerful singing(强有力的演唱)和emotional expression(情感表达),表演是self-explanatory(不言自明的),fluid(流畅的),以及life-like(写实的)。 · explanatory /ɪkˈsplænətɔ:ri/ adj. 解释的,说明的比如舞台上的props(道具)都是identical to the object in real life(模仿现实中真实的物品),还有很多舞台效果都很写实,比如fake blood(假血), fake knives(仿真刀),或者sound effects(音效)等等。· identical adj. For example, many movements(许多人物的动作)are just imitating actions (模仿真实情景), like riding a horse, or entering a room.· symbolic adj. It's not so straightforward It is symbolic where the audience infers what is happening in that moment (观众推断在那一刻在发生着什么).· infer v. 推断,推论舞台上的道具are also not exactly life-like(也不是那么写实)。 The roles in traditional Chinese operas(中国的传统戏剧) are fixed(是固定的)。 Sheng(生), which refers to male roles(男性角色),and Dan(旦), the female roles(女性角色)。除了the main male and female characters,还有Jing(净),who play with their face painted(花脸),他们扮演的是一些比较严肃的角色,比如warriors(士兵), heroes(英雄)还有statesmen(政治家)。Chou(丑), which is the clown(小丑), also has a painted face, with a patch of white paint around his eyes and nose(一般在眼睛和鼻子的这个位置会涂上一块白色),用来营造comic effect(喜剧效果)。 Using body and face makeup or paint is a great way to show which characters they are!在西方的戏剧中,会有protagonists(主人公),他们是整部戏剧的核心,drive the plot(推动着情节的发展),他们也经常face challenges or a tragic fate(面对挑战或者悲惨的命运)。· protagonist /prəˈtæɡənɪst/ n. · antagonist /ænˈtæɡənɪst/ n. · chorus /ˈkɔ:rəs/ n. 合唱团除了这些角色之外,还会有heroes(男性英雄角色),heroine(女性英雄角色),comic heroes(喜剧角色),villains(恶霸角色),lovers(情人)等等。· villain /ˈvɪlən/ n. · pitch n. The audience is also an important part of a play(观众也是戏剧很重要的一环). 一个好的喜剧是completed by the performers and the audience(由演员和观众共同完成)。audience /ˈɑːdiəns/ n. 观众中国的传统戏曲通常是performed in the open air(在露天演出),所以technically(严格说来)它不像是在一个closed theater(封闭式剧院)。有一个 rising trend nowadays(当下的趋势),就是这些戏剧正在moving into the theaters(搬到剧院里),而且there has been a resurgent interest among the young people(年轻人也重新拾起了对传统戏剧的兴趣)。resurgent /rɪˈsɜ:rdʒənt/ adj. 复兴的;再度流行的在西方,去剧院看戏剧也变得less common than it used to be(比之前更少见), 而且比较昂贵,但依然是valued in western culture(在西方文化中受到重视的)。 现在有了电视和streaming(流媒体),戏剧也can be watched online(可以在网上观看)。更丰富的选择和观看方式has opened up this world to many(为许多人打开了这个世界)!而在网上看到一些amazing(超级棒的)戏剧之后,很多中国年轻人也start to show great interest in going to the theaters(开始对去剧院这件事充满兴趣)!

Sienna Stoneking, a freshman at Muscatine High School in the US state of Iowa, could not conceal her excitement when recalling her first trip to China, which she made last month with the encouragement of President Xi Jinping."If anyone is thinking of taking a trip there, it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and go for it!" she said.More than 20 students from the high school, including Stoneking, participated in an exchange visit to Beijing, Shanghai and Hebei province from Jan 24 to 30.After wrapping up their tour of China, the students wrote a letter to Xi, sharing their joy during the trip and thanking him for the invitation."More than ever now, this trip motivated me to take a deeper dive into the culture, and someday I hope to become fluent (in Mandarin) and take many more trips," Stoneking said.Xi replied to the young US visitors on Saturday, the Chinese Lantern Festival, which marked the first full moon of the Year of the Dragon. Xi also sent them New Year cards. In his reply, Xi noted that Lantern Festival has long been an important moment for the Chinese people to express their hope for a better life.He extended holiday wishes to the teachers and students of the school, and encouraged more US youths to come to China for exchanges and study. The young visitors became the first group of United States high school students to visit China under a program that aims to invite 50,000 young people from the US to go to China in the next five years for exchanges and study. Xi announced the program in San Francisco in November during his visit to the US.Xi welcomed the school's students to be part of the program when he replied last month to Sarah Lande, one of his "old friends" from Iowa. Lande had hosted Xi in the Iowa city of Muscatine when Xi first visited the US in 1985 as a county-level official from Hebei province. When the US students arrived in Beijing, one of their gifts to Xi was a school flag written with Chinese characters .The students' letter addressed to Xi featured beautifully written Chinese characters as well as vividly hand-painted dragon, Great Wall and giant panda depictions. In his reply on Saturday, Xi said he was happy that the students had visited several Chinese cities, where they saw pandas, tasted Chinese delicacies, experienced Chinese culture and had a lot of fun.Learning that the US students had made many Chinese friends during the trip and had invited them to visit their hometown in the US, Xi said he was touched by their friendship.Stoneking told China Daily: "I feel honored to have the opportunity to communicate with President Xi Jinping. It's still so shocking to me the connection we share with China."She added that she and a classmate "agreed that if we were given the chance to go to college there, we would take a plane in a heartbeat".Dan Stein, chairman of the Muscatine-China Initiatives Committee and a native of Muscatine, accompanied the students for much of the China trip."It was the first time for the students to leave the United States or, for a lot of them, even to travel on an airplane," he said."It's one thing to see in a video or on TV about another country. But to go there firsthand and taste the food and see the sights and smell the air, feel the culture, I think that was what the trip accomplished," he said."I'm hopeful that we can continue to have more exchanges. And at the same time, we want more Chinese people to also come visit us in the US so they can see the same thing and feel it firsthand," he added.'Seeing is believing'In 1985, Xi visited Muscatine as secretary of the Communist Party of China Zhengding county committee in Hebei province. In his reply letter on Saturday, Xi cited a Chinese saying that "seeing is believing", noting that the warm and friendly people he met in the US in 1985 left an indelible impression.Likewise, it is believed that through this exchange visit, the students can gain a more intuitive and in-depth understanding of China and the Chinese people, Xi said.Xi encouraged the Muscatine High School students to revisit China, and he encouraged more young people from the US to come to China for exchanges and study. He added that they can get firsthand experience of the real China in a multidimensional and comprehensive manner, foster genuine friendship with Chinese youths, and learn from one another so that they can jointly contribute to a stronger friendship between the people of the two countries. The students visited Beijing Zoo to see giant pandas and listened to briefings about wildlife protection. While in Beijing, they also joined local high school students at a cultural experience center to learn about traditional Chinese medicine and the evolution of Chinese characters, and they tried on Peking Opera costumes.During their trip to Shijiazhuang, the provincial capital of Hebei, they toured Shijiazhuang Foreign Language School, tried the Chinese folk art of paper-cutting, and made dumplings together with their Chinese peers."All of the facilities that they had at the school were really great. In the US, we have a lot of opportunities, but here there were so many sports and extracurriculars," said Arabella Fourneau, another freshman at Muscatine High School."The city was amazing, and the people were so friendly to us," she added. In Shanghai, the students explored the city with local teenagers, tried calligraphy, visited Fudan University for a photo exhibition about China-US exchanges, and toured the Shanghai Tower skyscraper for a bird's-eye view of the Lujiazui financial district."It's just opening up channels of communication," said Aaron Smith, a teacher at Muscatine High School. "Like right now, I'm having conversations with faculty members that I met, with some students that I met, just sharing ideas."When you have these open channels of communications, it just strengthens the line of friendships," Smith added.Apollo Haye, a junior at Muscatine High School, said: "China was a beautiful place, and I was stunned by the history and modern advances they had. The architecture and art were amazing. I would like to study more on China after returning from this trip, and I hope to get into an exchange program for it."Stein, the chairman of the Muscatine-China Initiatives Committee, said the trip was "a life-changing experience" for the young visitors."I think they're more open and more interested in China. They want to know more and meet more Chinese people. Overall, the trip met the vision of President Xi that he laid out in San Francisco to get people to actually come and see," Stein added.Reporter: Zhang Yunbi, May Zhou

Synopsis The year 2000 marked both the arrival of a new millennium and the 250th anniversary of the death of the great German Baroque composer Johann Sebastian Bach. The International Bach Academy in Stuttgart decided to mark the occasion by commissioning four very different composers to write four new passion settings, one each after the Gospel accounts of the evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. A German composer, Wolfgang Rihm, was chosen for the St. Luke Passion; a Russian, Sofia Gubaidulina for St. John's; an Argentine, Osvaldo Golijov for St. Mark's; and a Chinese composer, Tan Dun, for the Passion according to St. Matthew. And on today's date in 2000, Helmuth Rilling conducted the world premiere of Tan Dun's “Water Passion after St. Matthew.” Tan said he was struck by the references to water in St. Matthew's gospel, so his setting includes seventeen large, illuminated bowls of water, positioned on stage in the form of a cross. These divide the chorus, with three percussionists and a group of additional soloists stationed at the four points of this cross. In Tan's “Water Passion,” natural sounds of water mix with a wide range of vocal techniques, including Tuvan throat singing and the stylized virtuosity of Peking Opera. Episode 85 (Chang Cheh Grandmaster part 3) This week the guys check out a couple of Shaw Brothers classics that would each kickstart their own Kung fu franchises. Adapting Louis Cha’s popular Condor Trilogy novels Chang Cheh and his newest protégé superstar Alexander Fu Sheng delivered The Brave Archer an action classic that seems to pack in everyone and everything that could possibly fit into its 2 hour run time with the notable exception of actual archery! Second up is the film that he is probably the most remembered for in the west, the wildly popular 5 Venoms (aka 5 Deadly Venoms) featuring a group of wildly costumed Peking Opera alumni collectively known as The Venom Mob that would blast their way into a series of deliriously entertaining films that continue to amaze for their guignol laced violence as much as their jaw dropping choreography.Three ways to support this podcast: 1. Live art is one of the few mediums that hasn’t been radically transformed by the digital age. No screen is yet able to capture the magic of in-person performance, be it a comedy show, theater, or even Peking opera. Peking Opera, also known as the national opera of China, is a form of Chinese opera that combines music, vocal performance, mime, dance, and acrobatics. Originating in the Qing Dynasty in the mid-nineteenth century, it has become one of the most influential and representative of all operas in China. Yet this art is struggling to maintain its enchantment in modern society, as younger generations are exposed to many other forms of entertainment. To tackle this situation, a group of professionals is trying to revive the time-honored art by adding new elements into it. What chemistry it has produced? Has it gained recognition of the fans nationwide?

This is Special English. I'm Mark Griffiths in Beijing. Here is the news. The recent WannaCry ransom ware outbreak across the world is the latest alarm about cyber security that demands immediate efforts at different levels, including international cooperation. It has been found that measures as simple as official Microsoft patch installation and security software update can work to fend off WannaCry in the largest cyber-attack in more than a decade. The hacking highlights the need for Internet users to heighten cyber security awareness. However, it also calls for systematic efforts as well as international cooperation to tackle cross-border challenges in a digitally connected world in order to affect a universal defense.A senior research fellow on cyber policy and security at Stanford University told the Xinhua News Agency that international cooperation on cyber security will be essential for a safer and more secure cyberspace.Herb Lin deplored the fact that countries have different views on how they intend to use cyberspace and the rules they want to apply have so far made it difficult to achieve international cooperation. Some experts foresee more attacks like WannaCry, which has hit more than 200,000 computers in some 150 countries since May 12. The vast majority of successful hacks require only the most basic techniques. This is Special English.Pharmaceutical company Merck recently won approval from the China Food and Drug Administration to sell its human papillomavirus vaccine, Gardasil, to help women fight cervical cancer.Developed by the US-based company in 2006, the vaccine has proved effective in protecting against the virus, better known as HPV, the chief cause of cervical cancer. The virus is found in almost all cervical cancer cases.Gardasil is the first HPV vaccine in the world and the second to be licensed for use in China. In July, Cervarix, an HPV vaccine developed by pharmaceutical GlaxoSmithKline, received approval to be sold on the Chinese mainland after almost 10 years of seeking approval.Gardasil is expected to be commercially available on the mainland in three to six months, which means women will no longer have to seek vaccinations outside of the mainland, in places such as Hong Kong. After breast cancer, cervical cancer is the second-most common cancer in women aged between 15 and 44 in China. China reports more than 130,000 cervical cancer cases a year, accounting for 28 percent of the global total. The HPV vaccine, as the first anti-cancer vaccine in the world, has proved effective in preventing cervical cancer and is seen as a breakthrough in the fight against the condition.Today, such vaccines are in use in around 120 countries and regions, including the United States, Australia and most European countries. You&`&re listening to Special English. I&`&m Mark Griffiths in Beijing.A 100-year-old medical technique could be used to achieve pregnancy in infertile women without the need for expensive in vitro fertilization treatments. That's according to researchers from the University of Adelaide and the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute. The often overlooked historical technique, which involves "flushing" the woman&`&s fallopian tubes with iodised poppy seed oil, has been proven to be successful in aiding fertility.Research teams in Australia and the Netherlands say that the procedure, called HSG, was first carried out in 1917 and involved flushing the tubes with the oil during an X-ray. Professor Ben Mol from the University of Adelaide says that over the past century, pregnancy rates among infertile women reportedly increased after their tubes had been flushed with either water or oil during the X-ray procedure. Until now, it has been unclear whether the type of solution used in the procedure was influencing the change in fertility. He said the results have been even more exciting than scientists could have predicted, helping to confirm that an age-old medical technique still has an important place in modern medicine.According to the results of Mol&`&s study, around 35 percent of infertile women who underwent the procedure achieved successful pregnancies within six months of the HSG being performed. This is Special English. Some 1,730 new plant species were discovered globally in the last year, some of which have food and medicinal value. That's according to an annual report released recently by the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew, based in England.Involving 128 scientists from 12 countries, RBG Kew&`&s State of the Worlds Plants report presents data never seen before on patterns affecting plants in different regions.New species of Manihot were discovered in Brazil that have the potential to be developed into better food crops, and new species of the climbing vine genus Mucuna, used in the treatment of Parkinson&`&s disease, were found in South East Asia and South and Central America.Kathy Willis, director of science at RBG Kew, says they have tried to make sure that this year&`&s State of the World&`&s Plants report goes beyond the numbers to look at the natural capital of plants -- how they are relevant and valuable to all aspects of our lives. The report also reveals that plants with thicker leaves and bark, more efficient water use, deeper roots, and higher wood density are better able to cope with future climate change. The report also highlights information on how new technology is helping to speed up the discovery and classification of plants that are providing important sign posts to the next food crops and actions in protecting some of the most important plant species globally. You&`&re listening to Special English. I&`&m Mark Griffiths in Beijing.Climate change is more real than ever. A new study has found a steady growth of moss in Antarctica over the past 50 years, and suggested that the continent will be greener in the future. The study was published recently in Current Biology, a scientific journal that covers all areas of biology. The research is led by Matthew Amesbury, a researcher at the University of Exeter in Britain. The Antarctic Peninsula might sound like a remote and untouched region, but the study showed that the effects of climate change are felt there, and it has been warming faster than the rest of the continent. The research team looked at 150 years&`& worth of data and found clear change points in the last 50 years, which showed the increase of moss cover. That could shift the ecosystem in Antarctica, driving it to simulate what has been observed in Arctic.Last month, the sea ice cover in the Arctic was record low, and that of Antarctic was near record low too, according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. This is Special English. The World Economic Forum on the Middle East and North Africa has been held with calls for increased support for youth and addressing unemployment and poverty.Officials during the forum at the Dead Sea said providing financial and moral support to the youth in the Middle East and reforming education were key in addressing the pressing challenges facing the region. The forum attracted more than 1,100 political and business leaders from more than 50 countries. The participants agreed that the world is facing many problems including high unemployment rate, fast population growth and political regional challenges. The problems are relentlessly seeking to thrive on the hopelessness and despair of the younger generation. The forum said providing hope and support are vital for the youth in the region.Crown Prince Hussein of Jordan said at the forum that what young people need most is for all to take a bet on them, and to support them, morally and financially, so they can create their own impact. The forum agreed that as 31 percent of young people in the region are unemployed, new initiatives and urgent action are needed. And you must know this name, Michael Chow(Chinese name: Zhou Yinghua), who is probably one of the most passionate Chinese about Peking Opera by interest or by fate.Chow's father was Zhou Xinfang, one of China's most famous actors and the leading figure at the Peking Opera of his time early last century. But Chow was never able to take up his father's career as he was sent to a British boarding school when he was 12 and grew up in Europe. He studied art in London before setting out on a business career that lasted for about 50 years.Michael Chow has been working hard and earned his name in the west as a restaurateur running a chain of high end restaurants providing authentic Chinese food in different locations around the world with the name "Chow".But Chow said deep in his heart he is an artist, and all he has been doing is to reconnect with his father and his home country China. After 47 years of running the restaurant business, Chow restarted his painting career in recent years, and had exhibitions in various places. Voices From Other Lands found him when he is preparing his first exhibition on the Chinese Mainland in 798, an art district in Beijing. We sat down and talked for his "magnificent obsessions."Michael Chow had ten years of professional training in painting at youth, and later focused on his restaurant business. Chow designed Mr. Chow, the first restaurant, in London featuring cool green floor tiles and white walls, and later bought art by Allen Jones, Peter Blake, Patrick Caulfield, David Hockney and Jim Dine for the walls. But Michael Chow said his restaurants have always been underlined by his desire and need to promote the Chinese culture. The passion for painting has been there and finally was turned into action. Michael Chow continues the Qi Style that was started by his father Zhou Xinfang, a leading figure at the Peking Opera. Through years, Chow realized the Qi Style is not a performance but a method of life. By good fortune, he said after a 50-year radical sabbatical, he returned to painting in the school of Qi. And now he is a self-commissioned ambassador in promoting the great art forms in the Chinese culture, Peking Opera in particular. In doing so, it's brought him closer to his father. When it comes to the 120th celebration of his father's birth, he said he has finally fulfilled that void.

A camera is used for taking photos. A bank was robbed yesterday. A man-made satellite was sent up into space last year. The tree must be planted on the ground. The ground will be covered with trees in a few years'time. They will be sent to the hospital right now. A talk will be given soon. Look and find out the similarities (相同点): Football is played all over the world. A camera is used for taking photos. A bank was robbed yesterday. A man-made satellite was sent up into space last year. The tree must be planted on the ground. The ground will be covered with trees in a few years' time. They will be sent to the hospital right now. A talk will be given soon. 1. Many people speak English. 2. He bought me a new bike yesterday. 3. The boss made him do the heavy work in the old days. 4. Tom must hand in the composition after class. do→be done 3. 如: give → be given to 此类动词还有: pass, show, send… 再如: buy → be bought for 此类动词还有: make, draw, cook, mend… 5. 如:happen、take place 、appear、disappear… 例句:A traffic accident _________ (happen) just now. 2. 连系动词(Link.v.) 如: be、look、seem、feel、sound、smell、taste、get、turn、become… 例句: Peking Opera _________ (sound) beautiful. 3. The pen _____ (write) very fast. This kind of sweater ____ (sell) well. This jacket is made of cotton. The book was written for children. Food is needed by every living thing. English is widely used nowadays. 2. The man introduced himself as Mr. Parker. I found myself in the park. Does the pair of new shoes suit you? We will have a meeting. 1. If the work ____, you can go and play games. Anchor: A leading Peking Opera Troupe is set to wrap up a tour of the United States later on this Friday with a pair of shows in Washington, DC. CRI's Washington correspondent He Fei has more. Reporter: Last century, Peking Opera legendary Mei Lanfang wowed American audiences with his exquisite and intriguing performances. Originally planned for just a week, his tour in the 1930's later turned into a month-long affair. Some 80 years later, his son, Master Mei Baojiu, has brought his students back to the same American cities his father toured once before. Waves of applause resound through the Opera House at the Kennedy Center in Washington. "It's been so beautiful, each segment carries its own feeling, story line, you definitely feel it." "The music is different, by the same time intriguing. This is something new, something totally outside of my box. Very enjoyable." "It's spectacular. The costumes, the hair dresses are amazing. Haven't seen anything like this. I've never heard of the Peking Opera, so it is a treat. I can't top that." The troupe is putting on two different shows in the United States. One is excerpts from five operas based on the classic plays of the Mei School. The other is a complete play "Lady Mu Guiying Takes Command". Both All of them are master works by Mei Lanfang. Mei Baojiu says being able to re-live his fathers triumph in the US is a dream-come-true. "Time has passed quickly. My father died in 1961 and I'm now in my eighties. After so many years, it's really great that I can visit the US again and let my students display my father's legacy to American audiences, as well as our compatriots overseas. This is not only a few performances but an interactive way to communicate with US culture." This year marks the 120th anniversary of the birth of Master Mei Lanfang, who was the first to introduce Peking Opera to the US. This year also marks the 35th anniversary of the establishment of Sino-US diplomatic ties. Chinese ambassador to the US, Cui Tiankai, says people-to-people exchanges are a key component of maintaining a healthy relationship between the two sides. "People-to-people understanding, based on the understanding of each other's history, culture and arts is very important. Peking Opera is definitely a key way to do that. I think the performances of the Mei Lanfang Troupe will help more American audiences understand Chinese history and culture, and the Chinese philosophy that is told in the opera. I believe this is a unique way for the US to understand how we act and to strengthen our bilateral ties." This Friday evening will see the Peking Opera troupe put on their final performance at the Kennedy Center in Washington, with "Lady Mu Guiying Takes Command". For CRI, I'm He Fei in Washington.

We all know that the U.S. imports over $400 billion dollars of clothing, toys, computers and other manufactured goods from China every year. Less well known is that the U.S.'s biggest export to China is our trash and scrap. Though the distance between your household recycling bin and the Chinese countryside might seem vast, you would be surprised at how quickly your empty yogurt container made that trip last year. This will be an informal, picture guided tour of the Chinese scrap economy, aka a peak at globalization's backside. California's no. 2 export to China in 2012 was "waste & scrap." It was New York and Florida's top export to China. Joshua Goldstein teaches history at the University of Southern California. Among the courses he teaches is the popular general education course "China and the World." Goldstein is the author of Drama Kings: Players and Publics in the Recreation of Peking Opera (2007) and many articles on Beijing Opera as a modern construction. He is also the co-editor (with Madeline Yue Dong) of Everyday Modernity in China (2006). He is currently at work on a study of the history of recycling in China.
