What's it like to take a punch? Host Trevor has never been in a fight in his life, until now. This week Trevor follows his curiosity to Pan Am Boxing Club, the oldest boxing club in Winnipeg. That's where he discovers that at this fight club, they're changing lives. Every two weeks the rainbow and trans flags fly in the non-profit gym when Jesse Jordan leads the Umbrella boxing program for 2SLGBTQ+ community, challenging the binary nature of the sport and changing the face of boxing. Next door to the boxing club, Pan Am Place is described by resident Kyle Grenier as “a big house with lots of dudes who like to fight.” He then laughs heartily as he is corrected by former resident Will Bress, “I would also call it a sober living house.” Run by the people who lead the gym, men who struggle with homelessness, addiction and incarceration can live at Pan Am Place rent free if they work out at the gym, volunteer their time, and actively strive to improve their lives. Hear how friendships are formed, lives are changed and what advice Will offers Kyle as he prepares to move out.Twice a week Chris Sarifa drives from his job, as manager of Pan Am Place, to the north end of the city where he opens the doors to the free North End Boxing Club for kids aged 12-17. From the boy with the lisp who's gaining confidence to the kid who needs to let his “inner tiger” out, this club is helping keep these kids safe and making them strong.Back in the gym, volunteer trainer Tia Jakab brings her six week old baby, Olive, to Pan Am Boxing Club for the very first time. We discover this former competitive fighter has had two concussions and is struggling with her desire to get back in the ring, and her need to stay safe for her daughter. Harry Black has been involved with Pan Am Boxing Club almost since it opened in 1968. As President and head trainer Harry, and his wife Susan Black, built the non-profit gym into the volunteer-based high performance place it is. At 67, he's never stopped training as a fighter, and has high expectations for everyone who comes through the doors. They share what it took to build Pan Am Place, and their visions for the future. It's finally time for Trevor Dineen to get in the ring to throw (and take) his very first punch ever. With his self-appointed coach, Harry Black, in his corner, Trevor steps up to his opponent, Dylan Martin, a fighter with Canada's national team. Can he go toe to toe?

On this episode Brian is joined by Floris from South African rock band Atomic Drive.Atomic Drive is an original high-energy, melodic riff rock band from Cape Town, South Africa. Drawing influence from the likes of Audioslave, Guns n Roses and AC DC, the band was formed in 2019 by Floris le Roux (Vocals, Guitar), Steph Nortje (Drums) and Nick Kuiper (Bass, Backing Vocals). Since then, Atomic Drive has released numerous Music and Lyric Videos.Following the release of their debut single "My Beautiful Life" the band received favorable reviews which led to them being booked for shows and festivals across South Africa. Sadly, the outbreak of COVID-19 and implementation of national lockdown hampered all further arrangements for these shows, with dates eventually cancelled shortly thereafter.During lockdown, the band decided to focus on creating more music, resulting in the subsequent release of their second single in April 2020. “Face of My Enemy” was accompanied by a hauntingly artistic lyric video, quickly becoming a favourite, not only for Atomic Drive, but anyone who saw it. This would also turn out to be one of the last releases of the band with vocalist Jesse Jordan who immigrated to the UK with family. In honour of their time together, Atomic Drive had their last live performance with Jesse in October 2020.The year 2021 was set to be a time to regroup for the band that had set out to find a replacement vocalist, auditioning many singers around Cape Town. The uncertainty of shows and future commitments that continued within the industry as a result of COVID-19 and the lack of finding a new vocalist resulted in the band taking time off to reorganize for the remainder of that year.As the industry slowly started to recover in 2022, so did Atomic Drive after deciding to keep their vocals in-house, with Floris taking over as vocalist and Nick on backing vocals. Taking some rehearsal time with this new dynamic, the band fervently enjoyed the three-piece setup and decided to permanently keep the line-up as is.Tune in to hear all about:The latest release "Wires"The formation of Atomic Drive. How the band dealt with show cancellations and a change in lineup following Covid.Floris' musical history.Concert experiences and much much more.Find Atomic Drive here:https://www.facebook.com/atomicdrivesa/https://www.instagram.com/driveatomic/https://open.spotify.com/artist/08dR3D9mPEFjMPvt6l2Pop?si=W3g2tvOLSYiRti8M17WIwAhttps://music.apple.com/us/artist/atomic-drive/1456425367Find CTMU here:https://linktr.ee/ConcertsthatmadeusNewsletter: https://concertsthatmadeus.aweb.page/p/f065707b-2e34-4268-8e73-94f12bd2e938If you would like to support the show you can do so by rating/reviewing us on Itunes and Spotify or by signing up at https://www.patreon.com/ConcertsthatmadeusSave 10% on Band Builder Academy membership by following this link https://bandbuilderacademy.com/Brian_Concerts/join and using promo code "concerts" at signup. We're back and this week we brought a special guest, the drummer of Yes M.A.M. Patrick Hayes. As usual we had fun, laughed, made jokes and listened to music to try and stump each other. In response to listeners wanting to learn more about entrepreneurship after, or during the military for that matter, my Marine Corps buddy Jesse Jordan joins me to talk about how he got started in coffee and has launched a successful in person and online coffee business. In this episode Jesse shares with us how he went from being a non-coffee drinker from Alabama to experimenting with coffee roasting under the supervision of a friend and mentor. With a little confidence under his belt, Jesse began testing his blends out on his co-workers while still putting in long hours as an instructor at the Marine Corps Special Operations Command Raider Training Center and then heading to his friend's coffee shop to roast coffee until the the wee hours of the morning. Jesse walks us through how he got his business started, what administrative process he had to go through, working with a local small business center, and establishing a working website backed by a fully operational supply and distribution chain. Jesse started the business while he was in the Marine Corps and is now living the American dream of being his own boss and doing what he loves.
