It's become clear to farmers and home gardeners alike that climate change is affecting the gardening landscape, literally. The climate is warming, pests are moving into different regions, and there's a growing need for vegetable varieties that are resilient to the stresses of this new age.In the world of organic farming, the job of creating those new varieties falls to a plant breeder: someone who, often painstakingly, crosses plants until they create a new variety. Dr. Jim Myers, one of the most accomplished plant breeders in the country, has lots of experience with this.Myers created the Indigo Rose tomato, a strikingly purple variety with the same antioxidants as blueberries. He also created the green bean cultivar predominantly used by Oregon producers, and is debuting two new varieties of low-heat habanero peppers next month, dubbed “Mild Thing” and “Notta Hotta.”Myers joins Ira Flatow from Corvallis, Oregon, where he's a professor of agricultural science at Oregon State University. They discuss his decades-long career in plant breeding and what he sees as the biggest challenges for the plant breeders of the future. Subscribe to this podcast. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Tuesday, March 19, 2024. WV's solar energy continues to grow with the addition of Marion County's Fort Martin site. A new campaign targets potential first-time foster parents. And explore new technologies at the Focus Forward conference in Morgantown…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV NEWS – West Virginia has long been one of the nation's leading producers of electrical energy, largely due to the coal industry. Until the beginning of this year, when FirstEnergy's Fort Martin solar site in Marion County came online, the largest solar array in the state belonged to Toyota. Visitors to the campus of Toyota Manufacturing West Virginia in Buffalo are greeted by the sight of its SmartFlower solar array. The campus also is home to a 5-acre array of more traditional-looking solar panels. The arrays are capable of generating 2.6 megawatts of power. The energy is used to power a number of employee services buildings on the campus and three EV charging stations. FirstEnergy's solar site on the site of its Fort Martin Power Station has about seven times the generating capacity of Toyota's array. The 80-acre site has nearly 50,000 solar panels capable of producing up to 18.9 megawatts per hour. The site is the first of five the company has said it plans to operate in the region. “It is important to have this voluntary option available to customers, as renewable energy is a large economic driver in both attracting new industry to West Virginia and keeping existing companies that now require a portion of their electricity to come from renewable sources,” said Jim Myers, president of FirstEnergy's West Virginia operations. The West Virginia Department of Human Services, along with Aetna Better Health of West Virginia, Mission West Virginia, and 10 foster care organizations around the state are all collaborating for the initiative, which targets first-time foster care parents as recruits, and focuses on finding older youth in the system good, stable homes. The Executive Director of Mountain Health Promise with Aetna Better Health of West Virginia Kathy Szafran said the organizations all agreed there's a great need in those areas. They are particularly looking for single or married adults who may have considered fostering in the past but have not yet taken the steps needed to become qualified. “The focus is on honesty, urgency, and duty,” she said. “We want folks in West Virginia to be able to know that we need them and we need them now.” They encourage those considering being a foster parent to visit wefosterwv.org as the next step, as it's a central resource outlining everything you need to know to become qualified. Former University of West Georgia lecturer Richard Sigman, 49, pleaded guilty on Monday to malice murder, three counts of aggravated assault, and three counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. The charges stem from Sigman's inexplicable and random fatal shooting of 18-year-old Anna Lynn Jones, a college student with no prior connection to the assailant. The incident occurred on July 30, 2022, when Sigman, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, engaged in a heated argument at Leopoldo's Pizza Napoletana. After threatening violence, security ejected him from the establishment. Authorities later described Sigman as a "belligerent drunk who liked to pick fights with others." Even the authorities don't know why Sigman did what he did next. “For reasons that are not clear from the evidence, shortly after midnight, Sigman stumbled into the lower level of the courthouse parking deck, drew his firearm, and walked up to the parked vehicle occupied by the three female victims, all of whom were college students,” they wrote. “Sigman approached the passenger side of the vehicle and banged on the window while brandishing his handgun. The victims were naturally terrified and began to back out of the parking space to escape from Sigman. As they reversed out of the parking space, Sigman fired three rounds, striking the front seat passenger in the head and killing her.” The court sentenced Sigman to life imprisonment plus 55 years, with the possibility of parole after 30 years. Prosecutors emphasized that Sigman, who was 47 at the time of the murder, would be 77 before having a chance at freedom. During the court proceedings, Sigman claimed self-defense, alleging that someone had shot at him. However, security footage contradicted his account, leading prosecutors to denounce his actions as "legally unjustified, senseless, and incomprehensible." As the court heard the tragic details, Anna's family expressed their profound grief. Anna's father, Carl, delivered a heart-wrenching statement outside the courthouse, lamenting the loss of his daughter's dreams and the milestones she would never experience. The family's attorney, Jim Myers, revealed that Sigman attempted to deflect blame during the proceedings, but the judge swiftly put an end to such explanations. Myers is representing Anna's family in a lawsuit against Sigman and the bar where the initial altercation occurred. The lawsuit alleges negligence on the part of the bar staff for failing to address Sigman's dangerous behavior despite being aware of his intoxicated and agitated state. "He took our hopes for what we knew Anna would become and what she would accomplish -- the life she would have lived. The lives she would have touched, the life she would have given, and the lives she would have saved as a nurse," Anna's father said. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE?
