Tomorrow, I'll be trading Iowa for a couple days in Los Angeles, where the HRP team will be presenting for the third year at LearningInspirEd's Student Power Summit. It's in LA this year in partnership with Homeboy Industries, the largest gang rehabilitation and re-entry program in the world. The founder, Father Greg Boyle, is quoted on the Homeboy homepage saying, “We imagine a world without prisons, and then we try to create that world,”. And I'm really looking forward to meeting and talking with the people there to learn more about how Homeboy works. A bit of a facetious question that sticks in my head is, in the high-stakes data-driven world of schooling, what piece of content or curriculum did these guys miss that would've made the difference? And more seriously, what is it about the environment at Homeboy Industries that schools can learn from? I'll have more on that when I get back. But until we build that world wi thout prisons, there will need to be programs for incarcerated people and people in transition from prison to public life, too. That's where this conversation with Jennifer Berkshire came about. Of course you know Jennifer from her years of hosting the Have You Heard? Podcast with her co-host Jack Schneider, and their coauthored books The Wolf At The Schoolhouse Door and The Education Wars. But for the past couple of years, Jennifer has also been teaching journalism and education policy in the Boston College Prison Education Program at MCI-Shirley, a medium security prison for men in central Massachusetts. Recording isn't allowed in the prison facility, but in 2025 Jennifer spoke with some of the men in her program who had been released from MCI-Shirley and were finishing their degrees on the Boston College campus, and she gave me permission to use those clips here.As you can hear, the program was a life-changing experience for these men, and it's been life-changing for Jennifer too. This conversation with Jennifer was one of the most eye-opening I've had in a long time, and it's always such a pleasure to talk with her. I've included links to several pieces of media we talk about in this episode, podcasts and articles created by inmates, books written by prison educators, and more, so check out the show notes for those links as well.John Lennon - The Tragedy of True CrimeEar Hustle Podcast: “The daily realities of life inside prison shared by those living it, and stories from the outside, post-incarceration”Have You Heard #202 - College Inside, College OutsideArticle - BC Prison Education Program Shatters Stigmas and Builds Better FuturesArticle - In prison, I embraced the SEL skills I should have learned in grade school
Have You Heard? is back. This time the format has changed a little. We still have Jordan, Patrick and myself but we decided to start hosting special guests and let them play our game. Welcome back to the Georgia Songbirds a duo from Canada Sugar and Spice. Danita and Shelly came on the show and graciously accepted being the first guinea pigs for this format. We talked about their journey and listned to a few of their songs. Then we got into the game and asked that imnportant question, Have You Heard. pull up a seat and listen in to our conversation and the songs we all chose.

Dr. Jack Schneider, Dwight W. Allen Distinguished Professor at UMass Amherst and and host of the Have You Heard podcast about education policy, joins us to break down the recent “schools are bad” media bonanza (links below). Dr. Schneider digs in to what's flawed about the panic-inducing articles about the state of American public education, and shares tips on what to say to the person next to us at a dinner party who starts to s**t on our kids' public school. Also, the questions to ask your kid if you really want to know if they're school is good, and a thought-provoking take on Little Free Libraries. Links: * America's Children Are Unwell. Jennifer Berkshire: Education writer, author, and co-host of Have You Heard. Known for her sharp analysis of education policy and its impact on communities.Jack Schneider: Historian of education, researcher, and co-host of Have You Heard. Jack brings a deep understanding of the historical and sociological forces shaping public schools.Public education is under pressure like never before. Jennifer and Jack explain why the system is on a precipice, how misinformation and political agendas distort reality, and what's at stake for students—especially those with disabilities—if privatization wins. Tim shares a powerful story from the Georgia State Capitol about a parent fighting for inclusion, and the trio discusses why educators and advocates must reclaim the narrative. Plus, we dive into the history of school choice, the rise of vouchers and charters, and end with a lighthearted mystery question from Tim's 12-year-old.Complete show notes and transcript: https://mcie.org/think-inclusive/public-education-on-the-precipice-narratives-inclusion-and-whats-at-stake-1314/
Today, we're sharing a special live recording of The Disagreement at the Harvard Graduate School of Education*. Our topic: Parents' Rights and K-12 Curriculum. This is our first live recording in a university class, and we are incredibly appreciative of Professor Jim Peyser and his students for having us.This episode was sparked by the judgement in the recent Supreme Court case, Mahmoud v. Taylor (24-297), which ruled in favor of allowing parents to “opt-out” children from lessons that did not align with their religious beliefs. It was a highly controversial ruling and has the potential to reshape U.S. public education on both national and local levels.*A Note: The Harvard Graduate School of Education recently launched the Dialogue Across Differences initiative, which fosters conversations on a wide range of topics from diverse perspectives. Please note that the views and opinions expressed by our guests today are solely their own and do not necessarily reflect those of HGSE or Harvard University. The Questions:To what extent should parents be allowed to opt their children out of K-12 school curriculum and courses? In a pluralistic society, how should decisions about what should—and should not—be part of school curriculum be made and by whom?To what extent is exposing children to views that differ from their religious, cultural, or ideological beliefs an essential component of, or threat to, public education? The GuestsJennifer Berkshire is a writer and co-host of a biweekly podcast on education, policy, and politics, Have You Heard? She teaches a course on the politics of public education at Yale University and, through the Boston College Prison Education Program, is an instructor in a Massachusetts prison. Jennifer is the author of The Education Wars, which examines the impact of the culture wars on the foundation of public education.Naomi Schaefer Riley is a journalist and senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. She is the author of several books across a variety of topics, including No Way to Treat a Child: How the Foster Care System, Family Courts, and Racial Activists Are Wrecking Young Lives, and Be the Parent, Please. A lot of Naomi's work focuses on child welfare, child protective services, foster care, and adoption. Questions or comments about this episode? This week on The Songwriter Connection Podcast, my guest is the incredibly talented Michelle Canning — singer, songwriter, and producer of a truly unique Christmas project titled “Hey, Have You Heard?”This isn't your typical Christmas album. Michelle has created what she calls a Christmas opera — a beautifully woven collection of songs inspired by the people and stories surrounding the birth of Jesus. Each song gives a fresh voice and perspective to the familiar Nativity story — from Mary and Joseph to the shepherds, the angels, and even the humble donkey that carried Mary to Bethlehem.Join us as Michelle shares how this imaginative and heartfelt project came to life, the songwriting and production process behind it, and the deeper meaning she hopes listeners will take away this holiday season.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/songwriter-connection/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Seasons change — and so does the rhythm of our work.In today's short “Behind the Mic” reflection, I want to tell you a little about why things on the Ideal Practice podcast might sound a little different for a while — and what's coming next.Over the next few months, I'll be alternating between short reflections and replays of some of my favorite episodes that are packed with value. This new rhythm gives me space to create something I'm really excited about — the self-paced, DIY version of my live course, Evolve. Whoooeeeee….!Ever wish you had a roadmap to help establish a solid foundation and grow your practice at your own pace — without adding more to your already full plate? This will be for you.So tune in today for a quick, heartfelt update about honoring your own seasons, working with intention, and our evolution as practice owners.Sometimes the most generous thing we can do is to create space for what's next. That's what I'm doing here. This week's message is brief, but important. And hey! Why don't you shoot me a note and let me know what you think about my plans. Am I on the right track here? :)I think I am.
Have You Heard heads to Florida, where education policy is increasingly being determined by wealthy donors. We meet a billionaire who has been putting big bucks behind a very particular vision for the state's education future. And we learn, yet again, that even the best laid plans have a way of going awry. Corporate influence exposer Jason Garcia and public education advocate Sue Woltanski take us on a tour of the Florida swamp, while Jack provides some answers to a question that many Floridians are asking these days: whatever happened to local control? Most of you failed miserably with our last Have You Heard episode, so we're running it back to close-out 2024. This show has 28 tracks, featuring bootlegs, b-sides, deep album cuts and remixes. Keep count of each song you've heard before. Don't count the original versions, just the ones you hear on this episode. We're going on the honor system and there's no honor in being a crumb bum. Keep score at home and then return to our episode post on Instagram or Facebook and share with us how many you've heard before. You know we had to show some Rickey love on this jawn, so it made sense to drop this episode on 12/24/24 and peace to Oakland indie label ABB on the logo flip. We also snuck in some love for a few fallen soldiers this year like Bo$$, Ka, Saafir and Chino XL on this episode.
