At 15 he was playing in bars. By 25 he was writing huge hits as a member of the Gin Blossoms. And 30 plus years later he's still writing great songs and conjuring great sounds as a solo artist, collaborator, session player, producer and composer for TV and film. He's pretty much done it all and he was nice enough to stop by and tell us all about it. This is a lovely, warm, wide ranging conversation about life and the love of music so come immerse yourself in this magic.

Jesse Valenzuela has been with the Gin Blossoms from their humble beginnings back in Tempe, Arizona before their regional success garnered the attention of the major labels and eventually resulted in getting signed by A&M. Their first full length album New Miserable Experence was a multi-platinum success that paved the way for them to become one of the 90’s most successful alternative rock acts. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Kevin is joined by fellow Kid In The Hall and best bud, Scott Thompson, and dear friend Dana Gould for a night of comedy, music, and cat euthanasia stories! After a sarcastic and haughty introduction from Dana (1:36), Kevin describes life as a "fake daddy" (4:52) living in Winnipeg. He then sings an emotional song about being in "Not-LA" alongside Jesse Valenzuela & Scott Hessel from Gin Blossoms (10:43). Scott and fellow comedian Phil Casale join Kevin onstage for a brand new sketch involving cocky bastards, cubicles, and floaty boats (16:24). Scott then tells an unforgettable story about putting down his cat, Uday Hussein (24:06). Finally, Jesse & Scott close out the show with two beautiful songs (50:19). The Gin Blossoms had one of the biggest albums of the Nineties in New Miserable Experience, which yielded the hits “Hey Jealousy,” and “Found Out About You.” The band has just put the finishing touches on their fourth full-length, No Chocolate Cake, which is full of the jangly, melodic pop that helped them sell over five million records to date. Icon Fetch talks with guitarist and founding member Jesse Valenzuela about the recording process, how Badfinger helped influence one of the songs, and how he'll NEVER play “Mustang Sally,” no matter how many requests he gets for it.
