On this episode of Timeless Wisdom, Dennis Prager defends the pursuit of happiness, a concept he believes is often misunderstood. He argues that happiness is not just a feeling that happens to us, but rather a worthy end in itself that can be pursued and achieved. Dennis explores the idea that people often confuse happiness with pleasure or a certain mood, and that true happiness comes from living a meaningful and fulfilling life. He also discusses the importance of knowing what brings happiness and how to pursue it, and shares stories from listeners who have found happiness through their faith and personal growth. Episode #1129 If you've ever caught yourself thinking, "Once this happens… then I'll be good," this episode is going to hit close to home. In this revisit, we break down a pattern a lot of driven men fall into. You set a goal, you chase it, you hit it… and almost immediately, your mind moves the goalpost. Now it's onto the next thing. And the next. And the next. On the surface, it looks like ambition. But underneath, it's a trap. We get into why constantly focusing on what's missing keeps you stuck in that cycle, and why no achievement no matter how big—actually fixes it. Not because the goals are wrong, but because of where you're chasing them from. This conversation also clears up a big misconception. A lot of guys think if they slow down and actually let themselves feel happy or fulfilled, they'll lose their edge. That they'll get soft or complacent. That's not what happens. What actually shifts is where your drive comes from. Instead of being pushed by pressure, stress, and the need to prove something, you start operating from a different place. You're still driven, but it's cleaner, more focused, and a lot less exhausting. We also talk about something simple that most guys overlook taking stock of what's already working. Not in a fluffy way, but in a way that actually changes how you show up day to day. Because if you can't recognize what's going right, you'll always feel like you're behind. If you've been stuck chasing the next win, thinking that's what's going to make everything click, this will give you a different way to look at it. If you're tired of spinning your wheels and want a clearer way to start fixing what's not working in your relationship, go check out the free training at https://fixmarriage.thepowerfulman.com/scales It walks you through what's really going on and gives you a simple, practical way to start turning things around.

At America's founding, who was entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? This was the topic of discussion at a recent event at the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History. It's an extension of Still Here: Native American Resilience in New England — a special series from Connecticut Public, featuring radio storytelling, in-depth videos, digital stories, pictures and a community conversation. “Many people say, ‘Who will show us better times?’ Let your face smile on us, Lord. You have given me greater joy than those who have abundant harvests of grain and new wine. In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe.” (Psalm 4:6–8 NLT) Dissatisfaction is the last of life’s headwinds that we’ll be talking about this week. It’s also one of the most common. Even those of us who like to think of ourselves as low-maintenance and unassuming harbor certain hopes and expectations for this life. We want meaning and purpose, among other things. When life fails to deliver, we’re left feeling disappointed, dissatisfied, and maybe even a little cheated. Only humans have a longing for meaning in life. I can assure you that my dog doesn’t sit around pondering the reason for his existence. He won’t be looking back on his life and saying, “You know, I tried it all as a dog. I chased cats. I drank toilet water. I tried bones. But deep inside of me, there was a void.” Dogs don’t think that way. They mainly think, “Food . . . sleep.” Dogs, you see, aren’t made in the image of God. You and I are. We are living souls, designed to know God and to experience something more than a mundane, directionless existence. From the time of our birth, we’ve been on a quest to discover that “something more.” And we keep searching until we discover that the answer to all our questions is found in a relationship with our Creator. God can give us a sense of joy and fulfillment that far surpasses the puny, fleeting pleasures this world offers. Even better, there’s no hangover in the morning. There’s no guilt or shame that accompanies it. The psalmists understood this. Psalm 4:6–8 says, “Many people say, ‘Who will show us better times?’ Let your face smile on us, Lord. You have given me greater joy than those who have abundant harvests of grain and new wine. In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe” (NLT). And Psalm 16:11 says, “You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever” (NLT). There’s pleasure in knowing God, not in chasing after happiness. In fact, we’ll never find happiness by chasing it. But what we will find is that as we chase God—as we pursue and walk with Him—then one day we will realize that we’ve become happy people. Happiness doesn’t come through actively seeking it but by getting our lives into proper balance, by aligning ourselves with God and His will for our lives. Happiness and joy are the byproducts of that balance and alignment. Jesus said, “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need” (Matthew 6:33 NLT). In other words, if you seek God and His plan first, everything else in life, including happiness and peace, will fall into place. Reflection question: What would seeking God and His plan first look like in your life? In this episode, Kati challenges the idea that happiness is something to chase, revealing how the "pursuit" mindset can actually keep salon and spa owners feeling stuck, dissatisfied, and always behind. Drawing on the concept of "the gap," she explains how constantly measuring yourself against an ever-moving ideal can create anxiety, burnout, and a lack of fulfillment—even when you're making real progress. Instead, Kati shares a powerful shift: practicing happiness in the present by recognizing growth, celebrating small wins, and appreciating the simple moments that already exist in your life and business. You'll walk away with practical strategies to build a culture of recognition, strengthen client and team relationships, and create a workplace where joy and progress can coexist every single day. Generational Shifts: A 2025 National Research Group study found that nearly 50% of men aged 13–30 desire to see men become more emotionally vulnerable, indicating a shift in perspective among younger generations. Mixed Opinions: Data from the Movember Foundation reveals that 31% of men surveyed view the ability to cry or be emotionally open as a strength, while 34% see it as a weakness. Adam Tomlin is the host of the ACT OUT podcast. Before embarking on his journey as a podcaster, he worked as an attorney, where he dedicated as much effort to avoiding his own emotions as he did to advancing someone else's dreams. After a couple of years of rewiring his mindset, he became frustrated with the narrative perpetuated by the "podcaster bro" culture, which suggested that compassion was a weakness incompatible with masculinity and the pursuit of a better world. This inspired Adam to create the ACT OUT podcast to change that perspective. He advocates for everyone to have the ability to pursue their happiness, allowing ALL individuals to make a life, earn a living, and make a difference. Adam's story reflects the American experience. At one point, I introduced myself with the line, "I began every attorney bio that way." In hindsight, that may have sounded more pretentious than charming, but ironically, it was more accurate than I realized. At the time, I felt stuck, empty, and like a bad person. Unfortunately, that feeling is a common narrative for many people, and I want to help change it. I was born and raised in a small rural town in northwest Georgia, where the accents were so strong that I didn't realize I had one until I went to college in Atlanta. Growing up, I was taught that the only acceptable feelings were “positive” ones, and even those came with terms and conditions. As a result, I tried to suppress all my emotions, but I was wildly unsuccessful. Nonetheless, I didn't seek help for my mental health until much later in life. Philosopher and writer Eamon Evans on humanity's relentless and impossible pursuit of happiness through materialism, social media and self help, and why the kindest and best people have been 'crushed by life' a couple of times.Eamon started to think more deeply about happiness and contentment in his 20s, after a bout of serious depression. He realised that trying to be happy all the time was paradoxically making him miserable, and says that's true for most of us in this modern world.Eamon began to trace the history of human's infatuation with being happy. What he found was that the story of humanity was tied up with other pursuits like survival, honour, virtue and discipline until very recently.Only in the 20th century did people start wanting to stop to smell the roses all the time, but Eamon says a permanent state of happiness impossible and emotionally counterproductive. In fact, our obsession with being happy is actually making us sad, and on top of that, it's making us sad about the fact that we're sad—a concept called 'meta-unhappiness'.Eamon acknowledges misery can sometimes be pathological, and it's important that lifesaving progress has been made on creating spaces here people can speak out and seek help. But in terms of daily, natural feelings of struggle, he says it's better to accept these as a normal part of human life, and look upon seasons of misery as miracles that build character, make us kinder, and more interesting. The Importance of Being Miserable is published by Simon and Schuster. This episode of Conversations was produced by Meggie Morris, Executive Producer was Nicola Harrison. It explores advertising, marketing, smart phones, addiction, dopamine, serotonin, Gen Z, glimmers of hope, gratitude, being grateful, how to be grateful, gratitude journal, Buddhism, enlightenment, Mad Men, advertising, capitalism, mental health, mental wellbeing, self help books, religion, industrial revolution, greed, property, wants versus needs. To binge even more great episodes of the Conversations podcast with Richard Fidler and Sarah Kanowski go the ABC listen app (Australia) or wherever you get your podcasts.
