Send us a Text Message."The Kids in the Hall," a Canadian sketch comedy troupe, has left an indelible mark on the world of comedy since their inception in 1984. Known for their quirky and often surreal humor, the group comprises five talented members: Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Mark McKinney, Scott Thompson, and Kevin McDonald. Together, they created a unique brand of comedy that resonated with audiences and influenced countless comedians.Kevin McDonald, one of the troupe's standout members, has been a driving force behind the group's success. Born on May 16, 1961, in Montreal, Quebec, McDonald has always had a knack for comedy. His comedic style is characterized by his physicality, expressive face, and ability to portray a wide range of characters, from the absurdly hilarious to the subtly satirical.McDonald's contributions to "The Kids in the Hall" are numerous and significant. He often played the role of the everyman caught in bizarre situations, which allowed him to showcase his impeccable timing and versatility. Some of his most memorable characters include the hapless corporate drone, the endearing and clueless Darill, and the enthusiastic but misguided "Sir Simon Milligan" of "The Pit of Ultimate Darkness" sketches.Beyond his work with "The Kids in the Hall," Kevin McDonald has enjoyed a diverse career in comedy and acting. He has made appearances in various television shows and films, lending his unique brand of humor to different projects. His voice work is also notable, including roles in animated series like "Lilo & Stitch: The Series" and "Invader Zim."Fans of Kevin McDonald have an exciting opportunity to see him live, as he will be appearing at City Winery St. Louis on Wednesday, July 24th. On today's episode, I talk to playwright and TV writer Susan Coyne. Originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Susan studied intellectual history before pivoting to acting. She acted in several seasons of the Stratford Festival (which was formerly known as the Stratford Shakespeare Festival) and then became a playwright. In the early aughts, Susan - along with Mark McKinney and Bob Martin, created the brilliant TV show Slings & Arrows, and over the three seasons won numerous Gemini Awards for writing and acting in the show. Since then, Susan has worked in TV and film both in the US and Canada, and most recently wrote on Mozart in the Jungle and Daisy Jones & the Six. rWotD Episode 2551: The Kids in the Hall Welcome to random Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of a random Wikipedia page every day.The random article for Sunday, 28 April 2024 is The Kids in the Hall. The Kids in the Hall is a Canadian sketch comedy troupe formed in 1984, consisting of comedians Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney, and Scott Thompson. Their eponymous television show ran from 1989 to 1995, on CBC, in Canada. It also appeared on CBS, HBO, and Comedy Central in the United States. The Kids made one film, Brain Candy, which was released in 1996. They reformed for various tours and comedy festivals in 2000. They later reunited for an eight-part miniseries, Death Comes to Town, in January 2010. An eight-episode revival season was released on May 13, 2022 on Amazon Prime Video. Their name came from 1950s TV comedian Sid Caesar, who would attribute a joke that did not go over well (or played worse than expected) to "the kids in the hall", referring to a group of young writers hanging around the studio. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:29 UTC on Sunday, 28 April 2024.For the full current version of the article, see The Kids in the Hall on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Matthew Standard.

We're ending the first week of our April theme known as “AWKWARD LAUGHTER 2: THE FLOP” with a selection that is a fond memory from our youth. Apparently, not enough people can say that they watched “KIDS IN THE HALL: BRAIN CANDY” in the theaters when it came out in 1996 but our two hosts actually did pay to see this movie. Or they at least borrowed money from their parents to go see it. The Canadien skit comedy troupe garnered a loyal audience in North America after spending years on basic cable and are absolutely influential to modern comedy. (The good stuff, anyway) It seemed exciting when Paramount opted to release a Kids in the Hall movie but, unfortunately, not much more than the hardcore Kids in the Hall fans went to see it. We were huge fans but were also children who were, admittedly, watching something more adult than our parents intended. It's amazing what they didn't pay attention to right under their noses. Decades later we reevaluate a personal cult favorite. A film project that brings about mixed feelings upon reflection for the talented players involved those being the director Kelly Makin and the cast. Shit, we might as well list them: Scott Thompson, Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald & Mark McKinney. There you go. Does this smart character-driven satire of corporations and cynical marketing still hold up? Does it deserve more? How would this movie fare amongst people who didn't know anything about The Kids in the Hall? Hear us out and watch the movie at this link (that worked as of this posting) right here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wc4ND4Javf4 Pretty sure direct media for this has been out of print for a while so click away. She's a long-time listener and a first-time guest. She's finally broken down, made a list, and checked it twice. And it's a doozie. Join us for laughs and memories of Saturday Night LIVE. Welcome… to Kill By Kill's TV Terrors where we make several deals with the Devil this week when we discuss an episode of FANTASY ISLAND!! Along the way, we explore the bureaucracy of the island, why smoke keeps erupting from Roddy McDowell's butt, debate Mr. Roarke's power levels, wonder what it takes to make Tattoo look like Blackbeard, pine for Mark McKinney's Satan from Kids In The Hall, and marvel at the many bad looks foisted upon Adam West!! All this, plus we wonder why so many of the local natives are white as hell and desperately avoid discussing Artie Johnson's half of the episode! It's a vacation without leaving your podcatcher!! Regarded as the “9th Art”, French bande desinée have a much longer history of serious socio-political engagement than American comics. Since the Algerian War (1954–62), postcolonialism, migration, anti-racism are major themes in francophone comics. Mark McKinney's newest book studies the genre from the formal dismantling of the French colonial empire in 1962 up to the present. Postcolonialism and Migration in French Comics (Leuven UP, 2021) analyses comics representing a gamut of perspectives on immigration and postcolonial ethnic minorities, ranging from staunch defense to violent rejection. Individual chapters are dedicated to specific artists, artistic collectives, comics, or themes, including avant-gardism, undocumented migrants in comics, and racism in far-right comics. Dr. Mark McKinney is Professor of French at Miami University, Ohio. Postcolonialism and Migration in French Comics(Leuven University Press, 2020) is the final installment of a trilogy of sorts that includes The Colonial Heritage of French Comics (Liverpool University Press, 2011) and Redrawing French Empire in Comics (Ohio State University Press, 2013). Dr. McKinney co-edited with Alec G. Hargreaves, Post-Colonial Cultures in France (Routledge, 1997) and edited History and Politics in French-Language Comics and Graphic Novels (University Press of Mississippi, 2008). From 2008-2015, along with Laurence Grove and Ann Miller, he edited the academic journal European Comic Art. Learn more about your ad choices.
