Interview by Kris PetersToday we're going to do something a little bit different. Instead of just talking normally about an album, as people normally do, HEAVY reviewed the upcoming release from Buckcherry - Roar Like Thunder - and went through it with vocalist Josh Todd song by song and he let us know if we were on the right track before giving us a bit more of a detailed version of what the song is about. We started with the review intro. "I've long been a fan of Buckcherry and their music. It has always held an infectious air of defiance and a rebellious swagger that has defied much of the music that has punctuated the last 25 years, with the band making an immediate statement with the classic song Lit Up from their self-titled 1999 debut album. They have always been a band that skirts in the shadowy side of the rock realm, defying trends and expectations while still managing to have somewhat of a crossover appeal that evades many others. After losing track of the band for a few years, I caught up again with Buckcherry for their sensational Fuck EP in 2014 and have kept up with every release since. The band seemed to find a fresh air of rock-drenched goodness on their 2021 release Hellbound, which they carried through to Volume 10 two years later. So it is with a great deal of excitement I sit to listen to their upcoming album, Roar Like Thunder, which is scheduled for release on June 13th.""That's great. Love it," Todd smiled. "Yeah, we're very excited. You know, we've already dropped three songs off the record, Roar Like Thunder, the title track, Come On and Set It Free, and everybody's loving it. It's a great record, you know, and it rocks from beginning to end. We're really excited for it to hit the streets."The full interview features a track-by-track analysis of Roar Like Thunder, where Josh highlighted themes of focus and ambition in the title track and expressed enthusiasm for the positive reception of three already released songs. He shared insights into the songwriting process, mentioning the evolution of tracks like Talking Bout Sex, inspired by Cardi B and George Michael, and Blackout, which reflects his personal struggles with alcohol. The conversation also covered the blues influences in songs like I Go Boom, which explores sociopathic themes, and the motivational nature of Set It Free. Other tracks discussed included Hello Goodbye, which contemplates bittersweet relationships, and Machine Gun, showcasing the band's storytelling ability. The dialogue concluded with praise for Let It Burn, seen as a powerful finale, reinforcing Buckcherry's strong presence in rock music.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Rev up your lifted trucks and crack open a cold one because we're diving deep into Buttrock—the most beloved (and mocked) genre of the 2000s. In this episode, we break down the legends: Creed, Nickelback, Puddle of Mudd, Breaking Benjamin, and Buckcherry. From Scott Stapp's open arms to Chad Kroeger's meme-worthy vocals, we embrace the power chords, questionable lyrics, and post-grunge angst that defined a generation. Is Buttrock unfairly hated, or does it slap harder than we want to admit? Tune in for crass jokes, nostalgia, and some guilty pleasure rock anthems.
Warbringer frontman John Kevill is once again back on the show! We open the discussion on his take on the world we currently live in, how his optimism of seeing positive change in his lifetime has waned in recent times, and how that mindset inspired the song “A Better World”. We also talk about how many of the songs on the new album are based on his experiences, how modern art has a low level of mind control that affects our decision making, how important the next year is for Warbringer, and the toxic mix many artists feel when they are successful in music but it doesn't translate into financial security. Petar and Brandon discuss the “Cat Bath Water” merchandise release by Belushi Speed Ball, MTV Unplugged streaming now on Paramount+ and us remembering those episodes in real time, Buckcherry's Josh Todd believing in rock n roll, and some Hatebreed drama surrounded the exit of Chris Beattie. A side project of Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes, The Poor Fools released one full-length Americana album entitled “Songs From The Barn” which was produced by Jeff Kazee. In 2013, Valentino joined Reno, NV-based American Country band Hellbound Glory which toured as the opening act for Kid Rock's Rebel Soul Tour. The tour featured Kid Rock, Buckcherry and Hellbound Glory. Subsequent touring with Hellbound Glory included dates with ZZ Top, 10 Years (band), Hinder and The Supersuckers. The new Dead Daisies album is dropping in September, so it's good to get Doug Aldrich from the band on Talkin' Rock with Meltdown to tell us about it. Plus, they'll be playing the Machine Shop on June 11th, in Flint, Michigan. As far as song ideas for the new album, he said everyone chipped in. "We all, all we all were, brought different parts in different song ideas. And that's generally what we do with The Dead Daisies is we'll bring in ideas and then, you know, in this situation, Marty Fredrickson was producing and he's like an amazing songwriter in his own. So he had a couple ideas already. Him and John (singer Corabi) had a couple ideas. I had a few. Michael Devin had a few. David (Lowy) had a few. I kind of helped David, finish off a couple of his ideas, and then we, we played them off for Marty." He told me that the first single's main riff for "Light Em Up" was actually written by Stevie D. from Buckcherry. "Yep. And Stevie had he had a whole song, but we just basically pinched the riff and Stevie gave his approval, and then we kind of wrote a little bit new around that riff and, and then we, you know, originally I don't remember, I can't remember his demo, how the riff was played. It might have been played down here or I'm not sure it might have been played in this position here, but this is how we ended up doing it. And it's got kind of a classic Daisy's. But yeah, it's obviously derivative of kind of the way we played it was derivative of kind of AC/ DC" He told me the new album covers a wide range of rock and was recorded in some historic studios. "There's there is a bunch of stuff that's in the vein of what we just talked about that's that fits together really well. But then we had a couple of songs that came in. Actually we we wrote one in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, in this studio called Fame Studio. That is a crazy, important studio for, you know, for early rock and for R&B. And like, Wilson Pickett and Aretha Franklin recorded their hits there. Duane Allman worked there with Wilson Pickett. And we were in the studio working on just playing through some blues stuff and kind of noodling around in a little bit for a week, and we wrote this tune that turned out to be way is really deep, it's like an album cut, it's not a single. It won't be a single, but it's probably one of the coolest songs on the record because it's like a cornerstone track that it makes the album so much better just because it's on it." Past Rock Projects With Doug Aldrich Doug told me about earlier stuff he'd done with other bands, including auditioning for KISS. "I got a call from Eric Carr, who came and saw me play, and I met him, and he invited me to come down to the studio and, and meet Paul and Gene and, and I played on a couple of tracks in the studio just to see. And then they had me come and play a couple times live with them. And it was it was, you know, I felt guilty because these guys, nobody had seen them without their makeup yet. So I really felt awkward about looking Gene Simmons in the eye and, and, and seeing his face, you know, it's like shouldn't, shouldn't be doing this. But the bottom line is, is that they wanted a little bit more of a technical guitar player." That's just for starters on this wide-ranging conversation with Doug. Get your tickets to see The Dead Daisies at the world-famous Machine Shop here.
