Sean Barrette is an author who has since written a book "Heartstrings - First Guitars" Heartstrings – First Guitars, is a collection of memories from a variety of musicians, famous, semi-famous, up and coming, anonymous, or otherwise, about the guitar they learned on, the first guitar they bought with their own money, the first “good” guitar they owned, or the beloved first-line guitar that accompanied them on first songs, first shows, first tours, or first recordings. These short, narrative pieces, tied together with first-time author Sean Barrette's memories of a life and career spent immersed in music, tell a story that demonstrates that, no matter the guitar player, they all have this first guitar story and love to tell it. It's the thread that ties all guitar players together, but these stories also provide insight into the very beginnings of many of the musical artists we love. It may even provide insight into the guitar player who lives with you. Or encourage someone to pick up a guitar and get playing themselves. With first guitar stories by: Gordon Lightfoot, Bruce Cockburn, David Knopfler, Colin Linden (Blackie & the Rodeo Kings), Johnny Hickman (Cracker), Rob Baker (Tragically Hip), Paul Langlois (Tragically Hip), Gord Sinclair (Tragically Hip), Tom Wilson (Blackie & the Rodeo Kings), Kevn Kinney (Drivin & Cryin), Liona Boyd, Leeroy Stagger, Moe Berg and Kris Abbott (The Pursuit of Happiness), Blair Packham (The Jitters), Rik Emmett (Triumph), Finny McConnell (The Mahones), Ron Hawkins (Lowest of the Low), Dave Genn (54-40), Skye Wallace, Alun Piggins, Mark Stuart, Stacey Earle, Chris and Eleanor Masterson (The Mastersons), Preston and Alan Glass, Barney Bentall, Sean Kelly (Crash Kelly), Mr. Zero (The Kings), Jaimee Harris, Andrew Hyatt, Terry Draper (Klaatu), Dan “Chewy” Mongrain (Voi Vod), Sal Costa (My Darkest Days, Bonds of Mara), Michael Mckenzie (Lowest of the Low), François Lamoureux, Jordon Zadorozny (Blinker the Star), Ed Ringwald (Gordon Lightfoot), Joel Plaskett, Neil Osborne (54-40), Carl Harvey (Toots & the Maytals), Don Ross, Mike Turner (Our Lady Peace), Darrell Scott, Stephen Fearing (Blackie & the Rodeo Kings), Ethan Ives (Car Seat Headrest), Jeffrey Trott (Sheryl Crow), Julian Taylor, David Pulkingham, Brian Howes (DDT), Gary Lee Connor (Screaming Trees), Johnette Napolitano (Concrete Blonde), Pete Yorn, Gordie Johnson (Big Sugar), David Baerwald, Pete Droge and Elaine Summers (The Sinners), Serena Ryder, Myles Zuniga (Fastball), Jim Cuddy (Blue Rodeo), Hayes Carll, Stuart Cameron (Crash Test Dummies), Myles Goodwin (April Wine), Brian and Bruce Good (The Good Brothers), Adrian Eccleston (Drake, The Weeknd), and many more. On the Saturday December 23, 2023 edition of the Richard Crouse Show we have look at some of the greatest Christmas songs of all time. First we meet Moe Berg, one forth of the Trans-Canada Highwaymen, a new band that consists of four of this country's best rock singer-songwriters, Sloan's Chris Murphy, Odds' Craig Nothey and former Barenaked Ladies frontman Steven Page. The album, “Explosive Hits Vol. 1,” is covers of Canadian AM rock radio hits from the 1960s and 70's and it's super fun. Moe Berg and I talk about the new album, and then get into the spirit of the season as Moe talks about a Christmas song he wrote with the Pursuit of Happiness and a tune he loves so much, he has a plaque with the lyrics. “Furious Devotion” author Richard Balls joins me to talk about “Fairytale of New York,” a song that is an Irish folk-style ballad and was written as a duet, with the Pogues' singer Shane MacGowan and Kristy MacColl as bickering former lovers on Christmas Eve. A song about their youthful hopes crushed by alcohol and drug addiction doesn't sound like a Christmas cracker, but in the UK it was the most-played Christmas song of the 21st century and re-enters the music charts every December. We'll also get to know Larry Weinstein, director of the documentary “Dreaming of a Jewish Christmas,” a musical documentary about the amazing story of a group of Jewish songwriters who wrote the soundtrack to Christmas, and we'll learn how the Cuban Missile Crisis inspired one of the most popular Christmas songs of all time. Finally we wrap with Brent Butt, the star, writer and/or producer of TV shows such as “Corner Gas,” “Hiccups” and “Corner Gas Animated,” and the author of the best-selling thriller “Huge,” and home designer, television host and producer, best-selling author, sought-after public speaker, and host of her own special Tuscan getaways Debbie Travis on their favorite Christmas songs and stories.

Moe Berg from the great Canadian power pop rock band The Pursuit of Happiness is our guest. He tells us his "Best Song I Ever Wrote," and we get the amazing story behind the song. Don't miss this interview with one of rock's great songwriters.
In the summer of 1942, Stanley Lovell, a renowned industrial chemist, received a mysterious order to report to an unfamiliar building in Washington, D.C. When he arrived, he was led to a barren room where he waited to meet the man who had summoned him. Lovell became the head of a secret group of scientists who developed dirty tricks for the OSS, the precursor to the CIA. Their inventions included bat bombs, suicide pills, fighting knives, silent pistols, and camouflaged explosives. Moreover, they forged documents for undercover agents, plotted the assassination of foreign leaders, and performed truth drug experiments on unsuspecting subjects. Nicholas Dawidoff is a journalist and author whose books include The Fly Swatter, In the Country of Country, and The Catcher Was a Spy: The Mysterious Life of Moe Berg. His new book is The Other Side of Prospect: A Story of Violence, Injustice, and the American City, which is about gun violence and life chances in New Haven, Connecticut. New Haven is now considered a type of demographically representative city that social scientists study to understand trends across America. Nicholas Dawidoff and Chauncey are both from New Haven, CT and came of age there, more or less, during the same decade(s) and in neighborhoods that were too far away from one another. Nicholas and Chauncey reflect on how New Haven has changed over the years, the neoliberal gangster capitalist onslaught and how it has hurt local communities, gun violence, justice, the color line, life, nostalgia, local history, and the meaning of home. On this episode of the podcast, Chauncey DeVega shares a recent personal experience that shows, again, how you can be a hero in your local community. He also shares some positive and uplifting emails from the good kind members of The Chauncey DeVega Show Secular Church Family – and of course an obligatory hate mail. WHERE CAN YOU FIND ME? Eds heads back out to the hill and pours one in; and for the first time it's one that Sean has heard of before but not with such insight into the life of Morris, possibly Moses Berg. Musician/songwriter/producer and founder of the great power pop band The Pursuit Of Happiness - Moe Berg - talks with host Paul Romanuk about Side Two of Paul McCartney's debut solo album, McCartney (Moe and Paul discuss Side One in the previous episode). Topics covered include Moe's take on what he considers to be the finest post-Beatles song written by any of the four Fabs. Moe also tells a great story about meeting one of his musical heroes - the great Joni Mitchell - at a very small and intimate gig she played in the studio of the old Canadian music channel MuchMusic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Wn2qaUhtxM (Here's a link to the show he's talking about.) Founding member, chief songwriter and singer for the amazing Canadian power pop band The Pursuit of Happiness, Moe Berg, digs into Paul McCartney's 1970 solo album McCartney with host Paul Romanuk. Moe, a self described "McCartney guy", talks about how the record resonates differently with him at this stage of his life and career than it did when he first heard it as a kid. Moe also talks about McCartney's gift for melody, even on some of the tracks on the album that only sound half-finished. And he also relates to McCartney not wanting to record an album "that would have sounded like a Beatles album", from his own experience of recording his first solo album away from his band The Pursuit of Happiness. Here's the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Pursuit_of_Happiness_(band) (Wiki page on The Pursuit of Happiness). Be sure to visit Moe Berg at his website https://moeberg.ca (moeberg.ca.) You can also find him on both Twitter and Insta at the handle @MOEtpoh.
