Happy Thursday, Cinema Peeps! I'm thrilled that today you'll be learning about filmmaker Nick Roth. Nick wrote and co-directed the feature comedy Hanky Panky, which happened to take home the Grand Jury Awards for Best Feature Film – Comedy and Best Cast Performance – Feature Film at Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2024. When I first saw Hanky Panky, I had one thought. “The people who made this film are the BEST PEOPLE.” This ensemble comedy sincerely takes me back to the glory days of Monty Python and Kids In The Hall movies, where a group of smart, funny people do their best to create something that nobody has seen before. Therefore you should accept the challenge to go to your favorite place to buy/rent films and watch Hanky Panky. Nick is of the opinion that the film is perfectly fine, maybe even better, on the AVOD platforms that throw ads into the film at random moments. Personally, I think you should rent it on an ad free platform. Is that enough setup? I think so! Except that you can go to @hankypankymovie to get weblink and more! _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Discover Indie Film Website – Instagram – Facebook – X/Twitter The INDIE Channel The INDIE Channel Website – Instagram – Facebook – X/Twitter – TikTok

We're still here once more! How dumb are we? We're locked in hot & heavy with Luke schooling Steve from the onset over Derrick Coleman's jersey number. How about that? Govier lives in Canada now & has been watching Luke play softball from across the Detroit River. Luke shares some new comedy with us from some guy named Dan Cummins. Luke saw Hope Davis at a bar once in NYC. Leigh Ann pops in to say hello to everybody! Govier loves to laugh at the whiskey laugh & then the gratuitous cursing from the guy who robs the party store in Robocop. It's so funny! Luke loves boomer TV & has wistful nostalgia for the Murder She Wrote & Columbo days. Then Cancer Boy from Kids In The Hall's Brain Candy shows up. Govier found himself in the crosshairs of someone's rage on the day of the Trump shooting. Never forget that Richard Simmons died that day too. The Joker premise of it's all part of the plan from The Dark Knight remains true today. Govier wanted to share his experience chatting with his co-worker about the Democratic National Convention & how the goal posts for meaningful change can be vastly different for each person depending on several factors. Luke & Govier don't seem to understand each other, which happens on this show. Can you listen to or watch shows where they review a movie in-depth even though you haven't seen it? We have your emails! They are all from Mr. Pink who is clearly our number one guy on the show! Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts with us through electronic messaging. We are grateful. We love you all! This talk show is not the same without you listening and emailing us your highly entertaining thoughts. We close the show with Graduate by Third Eye Blind. Send us a Text Message."The Kids in the Hall," a Canadian sketch comedy troupe, has left an indelible mark on the world of comedy since their inception in 1984. Known for their quirky and often surreal humor, the group comprises five talented members: Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Mark McKinney, Scott Thompson, and Kevin McDonald. Together, they created a unique brand of comedy that resonated with audiences and influenced countless comedians.Kevin McDonald, one of the troupe's standout members, has been a driving force behind the group's success. Born on May 16, 1961, in Montreal, Quebec, McDonald has always had a knack for comedy. His comedic style is characterized by his physicality, expressive face, and ability to portray a wide range of characters, from the absurdly hilarious to the subtly satirical.McDonald's contributions to "The Kids in the Hall" are numerous and significant. He often played the role of the everyman caught in bizarre situations, which allowed him to showcase his impeccable timing and versatility. Some of his most memorable characters include the hapless corporate drone, the endearing and clueless Darill, and the enthusiastic but misguided "Sir Simon Milligan" of "The Pit of Ultimate Darkness" sketches.Beyond his work with "The Kids in the Hall," Kevin McDonald has enjoyed a diverse career in comedy and acting. He has made appearances in various television shows and films, lending his unique brand of humor to different projects. His voice work is also notable, including roles in animated series like "Lilo & Stitch: The Series" and "Invader Zim."Fans of Kevin McDonald have an exciting opportunity to see him live, as he will be appearing at City Winery St. Louis on Wednesday, July 24th. What jobs are so weird you might actually want to do them? How do you heal from a parent's substance use issues? Then there's Amy, who writes an It Happened To Me about her internship at Mad magazine, not knowing what hangs us all up is her throwaway detail about spending the summer BEFORE that working at a crouton factory, but...did she? This week on the podcast, Vanessa and Jonah are joined by hilarious comedian and new friend, Kyle Kinane. Jonah tests out some of his pun-centric stand-up material, Kyle talks about his love of horror movies and is there anything scarier than running into a sweaty guy in a mosh pit? We also get into Kyle's topic, the PBS educational show Cover to Cover and how it informed his own forays into creative expression the same way that "Kids In The Hall" informed his discovery of comedy. We also play a round of CHANGE.DORK where we debate if microwaves should have a mute button, if society should stop judging people who eat cupcakes for breakfast and the underrated benefits of vanilla frosties and cheese pizza. Welcome once again to live-action month on What A Cartoon, where YOU are the fool. (An April Fool, if you will...) In our sixth podcast about a live-action show that has very cartoony qualities, we're digging into the classic Canadian sketch comedy program, Kids in the Hall. This collection of maple-leaf misfits helped define alternative comedy in just five short years and a surprising amount of episodes. And, thanks to frequent Comedy Central reruns, their cult show gradually built up enough of a fanbase to go on regular tours, produce new shows, and even reboot their old series 25 years after the original run reached its natural conclusion. So sit back and recall your last average weekend as we explore this highly influential comedy series that both delighted and warped us throughout the '90s. We're ending the first week of our April theme known as “AWKWARD LAUGHTER 2: THE FLOP” with a selection that is a fond memory from our youth. Apparently, not enough people can say that they watched “KIDS IN THE HALL: BRAIN CANDY” in the theaters when it came out in 1996 but our two hosts actually did pay to see this movie. Or they at least borrowed money from their parents to go see it. The Canadien skit comedy troupe garnered a loyal audience in North America after spending years on basic cable and are absolutely influential to modern comedy. (The good stuff, anyway) It seemed exciting when Paramount opted to release a Kids in the Hall movie but, unfortunately, not much more than the hardcore Kids in the Hall fans went to see it. We were huge fans but were also children who were, admittedly, watching something more adult than our parents intended. It's amazing what they didn't pay attention to right under their noses. Decades later we reevaluate a personal cult favorite. A film project that brings about mixed feelings upon reflection for the talented players involved those being the director Kelly Makin and the cast. Shit, we might as well list them: Scott Thompson, Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald & Mark McKinney. There you go. Does this smart character-driven satire of corporations and cynical marketing still hold up? Does it deserve more? How would this movie fare amongst people who didn't know anything about The Kids in the Hall? Hear us out and watch the movie at this link (that worked as of this posting) right here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wc4ND4Javf4 Pretty sure direct media for this has been out of print for a while so click away. Going over the summary of the second radio drama episode in The Pit of Ultimate Dark Shadows. Then eventually I discuss the commentary as well as why changes for the better are occurring. How the Kids In The Hall hosts are acclimating to the differences and oddities. Drips of how knowingly being “despised” I just keep going? Well? It's happened before! Going through various options with the supernatural, what to add, what to discard and what to keep. Vocal characterizations, etcetera. Josette's chamber pot? Blending in the 1960 Time Machine film character.Hoffman and Barnabas butting heads over Wadsworth, and Dry Ice. Oscilloscopes? Special Effects = Crap your Dad has in the Garage... Racing up the stairs with Doctor Hoffman. If soap characters are so stressed out? Maybe drink LESS COFFEE?!? Examples of how Wadsworth understands how to handle Barnabas Collins “issues” fivefold.Wadsworth comparing Willie and Barnabas to each other from episode two and episode fourteen and how he goes about it. Doctor HJoffman and Carolyn having “a moment”. Mummies are gross... because. Throwing in Miss Cleo. Discussion details. Lemon curd over jam. Extra explanations over how I figured out the gossip and hate-speak was happening. How to get in touch and why it is important along with narrative chat being important. Hopefully all will work-out. Hope the ocean waves aren't too loud. Take care!
And now for something completely different! Today we are joined by actor, writer and comedian, Anders Yates, to talk about the holy grail of British sketch comedy; MONTY PYTHON. We discover what makes something ‘Pythonesque', which sketches are timeless (and which ones aren't), what Terry Gilliam's incredible animation allowed them to get away with, and how they influenced other sketch groups like Kids In The Hall. Plus, we dig into Carol Cleveland, the unofficial female python, why Anders should see Spamalot and Kyah learns about the Monty Python CD-ROM game. Joe and Jacques saw Brian Longwell (The Corporate Comedian) a few weeks back and were blown away. Brian is more of an “act” then a stand-up comic. Part one-man show meets a half hour long hysterical Kids In The Hall sketch. Brian's path to comedy included a long stop as an engineer at Bell Labs for years before starting his own wildly successful tech company. When we asked when Brian quite his day job and became a full-time comic … on the zoom he held up a circuit board he was designing and told us he hasn't! He still owns his company and can't ever stop building stuff! Brain IS looking forward to (mostly) retiring and doing more shows. Maybe the cruise circuit is in his future. Huge thanks to Brian's MUCH better half (Nikki) for getting his zoom up and work out and for jumping in aa couple times and being AWESOME! Follow Brian on Instagram @BCLongwell And his website: www.brianlongwell.com CPP on IG: @CarnivalPersonnelPodcast and on Twitter: @CarnivalPodcast Biff on Twitter is @BiffPlaysHockey Joe on Twitter is: @Optigrabber Jacques on Twitter is @TheJacques4 (but really … @CarnivalPodcast) Opening Song: WKRP parody by @Model_CHP3Y (Twitter and Youtube) Closing Song: Other Break and Lull by Dan Cray and Beyond Id (WMFO 1993 … I think)
Tom Wheeler and Dave Foley, hosts of the podcast "Really? With Tom and Dave," will join us to discuss the latest developments on the UFO / UAP phenomenon. There is a lot to cover from the testimony of whistleblower David Grusch, the NASA UFO / UAP news conference, and the "supposed" alien corpse unveiled in Mexico. You won't want to miss this livestream!Dave Foley was born and raised in Toronto, where he attended alternative high schools. While there, he began writing stand-up comedy for a creative writing project. His interest in improv led him to comedy workshops, where he met and teamed with Kevin McDonald. They became The Kids in the Hall one year later, and as the saying goes, the rest is history!Their distinct and irreverent brand of comedy quickly earned The Kids in the Hall a large cult following, influencing a new generation of sketch comedy. In 1987, Lorne Michaels produced their first television special. By 1989, the troupe had their own series on the Canadian Broadcasting Co. and, later on HBO, where it aired until 1991. CBS and Comedy Central soon after picked it up, where it ran from 1992-1994. They then crossed over into feature films with the 1995 release of Brain Candy for Paramount Pictures. In 2022, Amazon revived the series for a sixth season, which received a rare 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.Tom Wheeler is a showrunner, screenwriter and novelist.
