Challenging Menopause Myths - Episode 34

Voices with Talking Talent

Today we're going to be looking at challenging workplace attitudes to menopause. There is still such a stigma surrounding menopause that women are unhappy about talking about it and line managers – who are quite often men – just don't know how to deal with it. Talking Talent Executive Coach Lucinda Quigley hosts a fascinating and informative discussion with Melanie Leavold and Kathryn Colas. Melanie is head of a client operational management team for a major assets management firm and is also head of D&I within that organisation's women's network. Kathryn is co-founder of the Kathryn Colas academy, which, in part, focuses on training managers to understand and support women in the workplace. #DEI #women #menopause #wellbeing #TalkingTalent

In this episode, Kate is joined by Kathryn Colas, to discuss menopause and its impact on relationship breakdown. They explore what menopause is, how it can impact relationships and the importance of separating the impact of menopause on relationships from other causes of relationship breakdown.   Kathryn founded SimplyHormones in 2007 following her own struggle with menopause over the course of 10 years. Simply Hormones offers face-to-face and online workplace training and one-to-one consultation to help women ‘survive' menopause, both in and outside of work and offer support to managers to better understand this seismic change of life for their staff. Kathryn's media appearances include the BBC Radio 4 Woman's Hour, BBC Breakfast TV along with numerous national newspapers and magazines. In 2020 she launched her first book ‘How to Survive Menopause Without Losing Your Mind' which dedicates several chapters to relationship breakdown and men. You can buy Kathryn's book directly through SimplyHormones, or from all major online book stores.

Angry and sad.  Those are two of many emotions my guest today felt after realising she had suffered 10 years of needless hell with peri menopause.  What kind of world do we live in where understanding the most natural transition in women's lives is kept hidden and shrouded in mystery?  (I think it's a conspiracy but I won't get into that today).  I found this episode, with the first and only layperson to be appointed to the medical advisory committee of the British Menopause Society, to be heart warming and fascinating.   Kathryn Colas is a hugely respected voice for women going through the menopause.   She's the founder and chief executive of the women's advice and support service Simply Hormones.  She's also become a sought-after public speaker, recognised for her work in public and private sector organisations in helping them to improve their understanding of menopausal symptoms. She's also the proud author of How to Survive Menopause without Losing Your Mind.  In this episode we touch on:

In a world designed by men for men, women often come off worst, sometimes with fatal consequences.Manuela Saragosa speaks to author Caroline Criado Perez about the gender data gap - the fact that everything from smartphone health apps to lapel microphones is designed with a male body in mind, and how for example cardiovascular problems in women go under-diagnosed because the female body is treated as "atypical".This blind spot for women is built into our work environments in large part because the people designing those environments are mostly men. So how do we get more women into positions of power? The answer, according to organisational psychologist Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic, is not to ease the way for women to reach the top, but rather to make it more difficult for so many incompetent over-confident men to do so.Plus, Kathryn Colas, founder of consultancy Simply Hormones, explains how the affect of the menopause on women in the workplaces is only just beginning to be recognised by employers.(Picture:

Laura, our co-host of the show also gave us a #ToolOfTheWeek called LyteSpark, it is like Skype just with a few extra features that you can use to interact with clients or business partners. Book of the week was recommended by Katheryn and it is “Be Gender Smart” by Inge Woudstra. It is essentially a guide for both genders to help understand the different issues both genders faces and how to go about it. We learnt a lot about how menopause can affect not only your personal but workplace life. Some of the main symptoms are forgetfulness, being confused and cross more than usual but overall quite depressed. If you are suffering, Katheryn suggests a great way to start getting help is by recognising and this and talking about it, especially if it’s people in the workplace. Accept you need a break and take one step at a time.
