What Does It Mean to Be “Professional?” - Episode 36

What does it mean to be professional? There are so many different interpretations of what that entails. For some, it means being impeccably dressed and well-groomed. For others, professionalism means speaking eloquently, behaving in a particularly reserved way, or adhering to certain standards. But at its core, being professional is about much more than just appearances or behavior. Have we collectively projected ideas about the professionalism that may or may not have anything to do with what being professional actually means? KK Harris joins the podcast to talk about what organizations and individuals miss when they adopt outdated notions and norms of what professionals should look like. She says, “Just be your best you, the best version of yourself…we can influence change by being the best version of ourselves." KK Harris is a highly skilled and sought-after business psychologist, executive coach, DEI (Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion) consultant, and mindset transformation expert with extensive experience in the public and private sectors. Her experiences, combined with her knowledge of psychology, have enabled KK to develop a deeper understanding of the complexity of people, which allows her to help leaders perform more effectively. #DEI # authenticity #TalkingTalent

Have you ever heard someone say the phrase, “I don't see color”? Although it may be meant to reassure others (or to reassure the speaker) that they are not racially prejudiced, this phrase and others like it are actually problematic. Because as well intended as it may seem to the user, “I don't see color,” and similar phrases, are highly damaging to relationships and can unravel DEI (Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion) efforts. In this episode, DEI champion, Dr. LaTonya Jackson, joins us for an important conversation on how inclusive leaders can better recognize the factors that may be contributing to a disconnect in their communication around issues related to color and culture. Tune in to learn what it means to embrace what Dr. Jackson calls “cultural sightedness.” Dr. LaTonya Jackson is a dynamic, forward-thinking people director with extensive experience in talent and workforce development, thought leadership, change management, instructional strategy, and facilitation. It could also be something bigger, like supporting a colleague who is navigating a major life transition or organizing a company-wide relief effort in support of a good cause. Our guest for this episode, Nick Ferrialo, says, “Being kind is being active and it's more soul-based.” Creating a culture of kindness in the workplace is essential as it can have a tremendous impact on employee wellbeing. We all have a responsibility in co-creating inclusive work environments. It's more than a “good idea.” Workplace inclusion is a business imperative. And beyond that, more importantly, when employees feel included, they gain a genuine sense of belonging and are more likely to be positively engaged within the organization. But if leadership and its employees are not working effectively together on this, it will be hard to gain momentum and buy-in for initiatives related to inclusion and building a culture of belonging. So what are the mindset shifts and work that must be embraced to advance workplace inclusion? Let's talk about that. If you've heard it once, you've heard it a million times: when COVID-19 hit, all our traditional ways of working went squarely out the window. So now there's no excuse to let old processes and policies continue acting as kryptonite to your neurodiverse employees. It's estimated that around 1 in 7 people in the UK are neurodiverse. And to help your neurodiverse people perform and succeed in the workplace, you need a new approach. Find out exactly what that is – and why it's so important as the competition for talent heats up – in this week's episode, where Executive Coach Director KK Harris is joined by the brilliant Theo Smith, neurodiversity evangelist and co-author of Neurodiversity at Work. Join KK and Theo for a spirited conversation about: Recognising an individual's incredible capabilities – and the detrimental impact of workplace kryptonite. Having open conversations and not getting hung up on terminology. Taking a person-centred approach in the workplace. (And why it's so critical to improving retention, performance, and employee wellbeing.) Building a better future that works for everyone – from the education system to employment. #DEI #Diversity #Inclusion #Equity #TalkingTalent #Neurodiversity #Neurodiverse #NeurodiverseWorkforce

Despite affecting everyone – whether directly or indirectly – menopause is still seen as something of a taboo in the workplace. Or, at the very least, it isn't openly discussed. And it's time to change that. This week, Lucinda Quigley, Head of Working Parents and executive coach, is joined by Laura David, NHS GP and founder of Smart About Health, to talk all things menopause. Together, they're diving into what menopause (and perimenopause) is, the effects of different symptoms, and – crucially – what needs to happen in the workplace to avoid losing (or pushing out) women going through the menopause. In this week's episode, you'll learn how to: Build menopause support into the workplace (and what that support looks like). Open and hold conversations about menopause. Direct people to resources that can educate and empower. #DEI #diversity #inclusion #equity #TalkingTalent #menopause #perimenopause #SmartAboutHealth #WorldMenopauseDay #wellbeing
