Two years ago, Kayvan Khalatbari was running to be mayor of Denver. He had started a chain of pizza shops, helped legalize cannabis, supported numerous arts organizations, and he had big plans for managing Denver's growth. Now he's the ringleader of a growing group of progressive-minded Denverites decamping for Trinidad, Colorado, a small rundown town on the New Mexico border. Mutiny Information Cafe is opening an outpost down there this summer. So are the owners of Grandma's House Brewery and the Hi-Dive. City Cast Denver producer Paul Karolyi sits down with Kayvan to talk about what he sees in Trinidad that he no longer sees in Denver. Plus, we'll hear from another Trinidad booster, Denver's iconic historical preservationist, Dana Crawford. Don't miss another morning with the City Cast Denver newsletter! Kayvan Khalatbari joins us and shares how Denver progressed in leading cannabis legalization: "we knew that we had a lot misperceptions and stigmas to overcome and it behooved us before the city and the state were regulating us very strictly, to self regulate, and to put on a good face for the industry. We knew that there were certainly a lot of folks that perpetuated those stigmas and stereotypes we had to overcome, but there also a lot of great operators that maybe weren't willing to step out in front of camera, step out in front of communities and be a face for the industry."

Kayvan Khalatbari returns and shares with us the issues which are driving him to run for Mayor of Denver. While the vote isn’t until 2019, Kayvan shares his thoughts on everything from ditching the ditch to social what do do about cannabis in the metropolis. Kayvan says he’s seen the city change and opportunity dwindle. He’s seeing long-time residents move away. He’d like to see a city that’s sustainable and forward thinking. He’s looking to create equitable opportunity with a synthesis of art, community, entrepreneurship and government with communication and transparency between them. And so he’s proposing Denver as Hemp Capital of the world which will draw business and provide jobs while not looking to spend anymore than is already in the budget.

In today’s episode, we revisit Kayvan Khalatbari of Denver Relief, Denver Relief Consulting, Sexy Pizza, Sexpot Comedy, Birdy Magazine and much more, to discuss the progress he has made since our last chat. This active and engaged individual is currently involved in over twenty initiatives, both cannabis-related and not, yet all his efforts remain centered in benefiting his community through passion-driven motivation, and blunt honesty.
Kayvan Khalatbari is rarely at rest. He currently runs several businesses in the Denver area, which include the Denver Relief dispensary, Denver Relief Consulting, and his Sexy Pizza restaurant chain, and can be found at the Sexpot comedy shows he produces around town, and sometimes even dressed up as a chicken, following Governor Hickenlooper. He is an interesting character to say the least. He says it is the strong work ethic instilled in him by his mother that keeps him going, and it looks like he won’t be slowing down anytime soon. Coming fresh off a run for public office, he is back hard at work helping businesses in other states prepare for the advent of legalization through Denver Relief Consulting, and gives us some insight on where he thinks the industry is going and how markets are opening up across the nation. What is most striking about Khalatbari, is that despite all of his antics and chock-full schedule, he is 100% committed to giving back to his community through everything that he does.
As a patient he found it difficult to find medicine. And so when he found it, he began to help others. His word of mouth business grew so large that he, Kayvan Khalatbari scrapped together $4K and a third partner put in the initial grow to start Denver Relief. From just before House Bill 1284 through today, Ean has been providing medicine through Denver Relief. He's got a number of other businesses and he's the Chair of the NCIA.
