There's never a dull moment in the world of anime and Pop Break is diving right into the action! Join anime enthusiasts Amanda Rivas and Josh Sarnecky as they geek out monthly with dedicated experts and special guests on exciting anime news, trending anime in TV and/or movies, and anime recommendations spanning different genres that everyone should be watching. If you are a lifelong anime lover or taking the initial leap into the genre that has something for everyone, this is the podcast for you! In this episode of Anime x Pop, Amanda and Josh are joined by guest Kelvin Kately of the Datfeelin Podcast Network (DFPN), the No Gimmicks Podcast, and the SmokePit podcast as they delve into the frenetic energy of Dandadan, discussing topics such as whether the main story and episode pacing are too chaotic, who is the ultimate granny between Granny Seiko andTurbo Granny, and the development of its main duo Okarun and Momo. They then transition to the intense third cour of Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War to share insights on returning beloved characters such as Grimmjow and Kenpachi, Orihime's role and whether she deserves the criticism she has been subjected to, and speculating on where the remainder of this cour and the final cour will go. This episode also includes Kelvin's introduction of the DFPN Network, the podcasts underneath the network's umbrella, and various projects being undertaken. Our enthusiasts also take a stroll through the anime content minds to discuss favorite series they've been watching recently, including Josh's thoughts on last month's topic selection - Dragonball Daima, Kelvin's recommendations of Ninja Scroll and My Friend Totoro, and Amanda's recommendation of Shangri La Frontier: Season 2. Dragonball Daima and Shangri La Frontier are currently streaming on Crunchyroll, Ninja Scroll on Apple TV and HIDIVE, and My Friend Totoro on Max. In Anime News, they discuss the new post credit scene from Attack on Titan: The Last Attack currently in theaters in Japan. Stay tuned next month for Anime x Pop's year in review mega draft!
Yes, it's a wrestling reference given that the only two on here for this show have names that start with A. And yes, this show is late, once again due to a more-than-hectic week. Apologies for the not-great scheduling, but we're working in the background to get things more stable. Also, there's a thing happening on November 5, so maybe do it either on that date or before - you all know what the thing is, it doesn't need to be said. Anyway, we've got an abbreviated recap of the summer season, thoughts on Look Back and MHA: You're Next, a major shift for GKIDS, and the biggest change to the One Piece anime yet - that's all in the first hour, and there's plenty from NYCC to dive into, both good and not-as-good. Convention season is wrapping up and we've got some bangs to go out on, for sure. We'll be back with the fall dub cast rundown next time, after... you know, the thing happens. Ever since the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, tensions over the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict have been on the rise in Denver, with reports of hate crimes, protests and counter-protests, and several high-profile politicians clashing. It all came to a head this week, with the Jewish National Fund-USA conference in town. So Host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi are talking it through with Denver Post reporter Joe Rubino, who was at City Council when Palestinian solidarity protesters disrupted the proceedings Monday evening. Then, we break down Mayor Mike Johnston's big plan for “revitalizing” downtown and share our Rocky Mountain Highs and Lows of the week. We discussed this New York Times article on the “instagrammable design” for office space. Paul talked about President Biden's visit and Dr. Martin Lockley. Bree mentioned the Hi-Dive's 20th anniversary. Joe talked about Mayor Johnston's latest housing hire, the Denver Post's reporting on the local Palestinian community, and El Tepehuan's expected closure. Breaking downtown news! After we recorded, Joe reported that Mayor Johnston has struck a deal to buy the former Denver Post building at Civic Center for $89 million. What do you think? It may seem weird to jump straight from first impressions into the Powercast, but whatever we're doing it and there's nothing stopping us. This season has some absolute banger new titles, and enough heat in the returning section to really demand all of our free time. There are a ton of shows to watch this season and at least half of them are pretty good. With the likes of Oshi no Ko and Demon Slayer there's truly something for every kind of anime fan and we are all eating good this spring. It might be time to finally get a Hidive account if you don't already have one though, because 2/3 of the top new titles aren't on Crunchyroll. We've got a stacked season ahead of us, so if you're looking for recs we've got you with our usual one sentence summaries and a few deep dives thrown in as well. Election day might be over, but Colorado's still reckoning with some big decisions voters made this midterm, annnnd we have questions: What's going to happen with Congressional District 3, where MAGA darling Lauren Boebert is in a shockingly close race with Democrat Adam Frisch? And what about the decriminalization of psychedelics? This is the beginning of what could be a massive industry, but will it even be commercialized in the first place? And does our back-to-back NBA MVP Nikola Jokić have a role in our electoral outcome? Producer Paul Karolyi, host Bree Davies and Westword editor-in-chief Patty Calhoun tackle all these questions and more, plus some special hot takes from some of City Cast Denver's favorite contributors. Paul mentioned the city's new Business Facade Improvement Program, the Colorado Sun's oral history of the fight for legal weed ten years ago, and Westword's interview with indigenous comic Josh Emerson about the Native Comedy Showcase at the Hi Dive this Sunday.
