Drug policy in America is at a critical inflection point. Following a period dominated by extreme harm reduction approaches, we're witnessing a significant shift back toward accountability-based treatment models. This transformation comes as cities like San Francisco and states like Oregon roll back failed experiments that provided tools for addiction without addressing its root causes.Dr. Kevin Sabet joins us fresh from United Nations meetings in Vienna, where American representation was noticeably diminished – a symptom of the current administration's still-developing drug policy strategy. Together, we analyze Dr. Nora Volkow's recent Stat News interview, where the longtime NIDA Director expressed skepticism about universalizing 12-step approaches despite compelling research supporting their effectiveness. As Sabet points out, studies from leading institutions demonstrate that 12-step programs often outperform traditional psychotherapy while lowering healthcare costs. The encouraging decline in opioid overdose deaths presents a complex puzzle we attempt to unravel. Is it increased naloxone availability? Greater public awareness of fentanyl dangers? The tragic reality that many vulnerable users have already died? The answer likely combines these factors, highlighting why comprehensive approaches that blend harm reduction tools with accountability-focused recovery pathways remain essential. As America recalibrates its drug policy strategy, this conversation offers crucial context for understanding what works, what doesn't, and why the pendulum is swinging back toward treatment models that emphasize personal responsibility alongside compassionate care.Follow the work of SAM and FDPS below:https://learnaboutsam.org/https://gooddrugpolicy.org/https://thedrugreport.org/On X: https://twitter.com/learnaboutsamhttps://twitter.com/GoodDrugPolicyhttps://twitter.com/KevinSabethttps://twitter.com/LukeNiforatosOn Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/learnaboutsam
High THC cannabis products are under intense scrutiny, and with good reason. Kevin Sabet, CEO of SAM Smart Approaches to Marijuana, joins us to dissect the cannabis industry's parallels with big tobacco, especially concerning unproven health claims and the relentless drive for profit. We examine a noteworthy New York Times article and question whether New York's $1 billion in cannabis sales is worth the potential cost to public health. Our discussion focuses on prioritizing health over profit, learning from the tobacco industry's past mistakes, and the crucial role of effective regulation in safeguarding public health. Our global audience is at the heart of what we do, and your support is invaluable. We are grateful to Kevin for his insights and extend our appreciation to listeners across dozens of countries and countless cities. Can relentless advocacy truly shape the future of marijuana legislation? Join us on the Drug Report podcast as we explore the recent triumph in New Hampshire, where the unwavering efforts of advocates have led Governor Kelly Ayotte to promise a veto on any future marijuana legalization attempts. This victory shines a light on the power of persistence in the ever-evolving landscape of drug policy. As we navigate through these pivotal changes, we're also dissecting the challenges faced by the marijuana industry in New York, revealing how initial promises of social equity have not been fulfilled, leaving many equity applicants in financial distress. Kevin Sabet's op-ed adds a critical perspective to our discussion, emphasizing the widening gap between wealthy investors and disenfranchised communities. Our conversation takes a crucial turn as we tackle issues surrounding medical marijuana prescriptions, drawing comparisons to the opioid crisis of the 1990s. How can we ensure patient safety when a small group of doctors dominates the recommendation landscape? We're also looking at the ongoing efforts in Florida to legalize marijuana and the strategic legislative initiatives being considered by the new Congress. Randy's resolution serves as a cornerstone in raising awareness about the risks of high-potency THC, reflecting a broader strategic approach to drug policy reform and patient protection.Federal marijuana legalization remains a hot topic, with the complexities of state and federal enforcement at the forefront. We address the urgent need for Congress to empower the DOJ in regulating marijuana sales near schools, while also examining the emerging debate around Delta 8, especially as companies like DoorDash enter the market. The unexpected halt in the marijuana rescheduling process due to an industry-filed motion has opened the door for broader scrutiny and discussion. President Trump's ambiguous remarks about the Safe Banking Act add another layer of uncertainty, as we acknowledge the collaborative efforts of advocates striving to navigate these challenging waters. It's been a little over a decade since cannabis was first legalized recreationally in the United States. As of today, recreational weed is legal in 24 states and the District of Columbia, and Americans have never been more pro-weed. In a Gallup poll from last November, 70 percent of U.S. adults said they support the federal legalization of marijuana, up from 50 percent in 2013 and a mere twelve percent in 1969. In May, the Biden administration moved to reclassify marijuana from Schedule I, where it sits alongside heroin and LSD, to Schedule III, a category of drugs that the DEA says have a “moderate to low potential for physical and psychological dependence.” States with legal marijuana report economic benefits, a reduced burden on the criminal justice system, and positive health outcomes for patients with chronic pain and epilepsy. But is legal cannabis really such a no-brainer? A recent study found that marijuana use—whether through smoking, edibles, or vapes—is associated with a higher risk of heart attack and stroke. Other studies have consistently shown that so-called “high-potency cannabis” increases the risk of psychotic episodes in young users. Today, a debate with two leading advocates both for and against the legalization of marijuana: has decriminalization worked? Or should it be reconsidered with more sober eyes? And is the most widely used and most socially acceptable illicit drug in the world, actually. . . dangerous? Dr. Peter Grinspoon is a physician and medical cannabis specialist at Massachusetts General Hospital and an instructor at Harvard Medical School. He is the author of Seeing Through the Smoke: A Cannabis Specialist Untangles the Truth About Marijuana. Kevin Sabet was a drug policy adviser for presidents Clinton, Bush, and Obama. Mental health and substance abuse are deeply intertwined crises impacting millions of Americans. Those struggling with mental illness are at significantly higher risk of developing substance use disorders, while drug and alcohol use can trigger or exacerbate psychiatric conditions. During Mental Health Awareness Month and at a time where drug policies are trying to be loosened, it is crucial that we shine a light on this damaging relationship and the urgent need for comprehensive treatment approaches. Kevin Sabet highlights that by increasing access to care that addresses the root causes of both substance abuse and mental illness, we can help more individuals reclaim their lives and well-being.

I wanted to clarify something I mentioned in this podcast: 5 new medical cannabis dispensary licenses that will be awarded once court dispute is settled “is really ten, since you get one license to sell both medical and adult-use and another to sell just adult-use,” from GrownIn.com Citations: - Odor of cannabis no longer provides basis for vehicle search in Illinois - https://www.wrex.com/news/top-stories/odor-of-cannabis-no-longer-provides-basis-for-vehicle-search-in-illinois/article_c8e008a6-497a-11ec-924c-53ff9fee74d1.html -New cannabis craft growers advised to follow craft beer model and specialize - https://www.chicagotribune.com/marijuana/illinois/ct-illinois-marijuana-craft-growers-meeting-20211119-3bfpnccjmjhftb5qru4bgord3a-story.html - Kevin Sabet, CEO and Founder of Smarter Approaches to Marijuana, tweet - https://twitter.com/KevinSabet/status/1462923360573165569?s=20

Dr. Kevin Sabet, author of Smokescreen, joins the Dom Giordano Program to discuss an opinion piece he penned for the Philadelphia Inquirer, arguing against the vote tomorrow in Philadelphia to legalize marijuana. Sabet, a three-time White House Drug Policy Advisor, explains why the industry of marijuana is the next ‘big tobacco,' and tells about the downfalls of marijuana legalization. Dr. Sabet explains that the addictive nature, the myth that marijuana is not addictive, is enough alone to reconsider the full force push toward legalization. Dr. Kevin Sabet further explains other detriments that would come in conjunction with legalization, and tells the difference between legal marijuana and legal alcohol. Sabet, President and CEO of SAM, Smart Approaches to Marijuana, Reefer Sanity: Seven Great Myths About Marijuana, Smokescreen: What the Marijuana Industry Doesn't Want You to Know,Smokescreen, Kevin Sabet On Election Day in 2012, voters in Colorado approved a ballot initiative legalizing the recreational use and sale of cannabis, making the state the first in the U.S. to do so. Sixteen other states, plus Washington D.C.,and Guam would go on to legalize the drug in the next nine years as public support for legalization rose rapidly – despite marijuana being illegal at the federal level. Today, support for marijuana legalization has become mainstream among Democratic politicians, and some Republicans also back the idea. State Governments are grappling with 'if and how to legalize the drug', while several marijuana-related bills – including those aiming to decriminalize it on the federal level – have been introduced in Congress. Marijuana is a substance many are familiar with but there's much most of us don't know. Dr Kevin A. Sabet is an author, consultant, assistant professor, and serves as the President and CEO of SAM, an organisation he founded with former Congressman Patrick Kennedy in 2013 and has served as White House advisor on drugs to three different administrations and who NBC News once called “the prodigy of drug politics". Kevin's first book 'Reefer Sanity: Seven Great Myths About Marijuana' painted a clear and factual picture on the dangers of marijuana. Kevin now has a new book 'Smokescreen: What the Marijuana Industry Doesn't Want You to Know' is an important resource about the dangers of marijuana, impeccably researched and gripping in its scope.” Asia Pacific Today. 21 June, 2021
