Lead Balloon - Public Relations, Marketing and Strategic Communications Disaster Stories
In the corporate world, unspoken rules about what constitutes appropriate workplace conversation provide white employees with a safe, comfortable space free from discussion about controversial topics like race and police brutality. But for people of color, there's no escaping these conversations--they shape the reality that Black people live every day in America. They can't turn it off or "take a break from it," and that's a form of white privilege right there. Everyone has a part to play in building a better society, and it starts with knowing how to have uncomfortable conversations. So in this episode of Lead Balloon, three people of color who work as professional communicators discuss their experiences with racism, privilege and the corporate world. Randy Crump from Prism Technical Management and Marketing Services, Dr. Monique Liston from Ubuntu Research and Evaluation, and Kennita Hickman from Catera Omnivision also share tips for how their white colleagues can help the cause instead of contributing to the problem. Because if you haven't been uncomfortable lately, you're part of the problem.

Kennita Hickman Kennita Hickman started writing at age 14 but soon found herself leaning toward the music industry, helping manage independent musicians. As an entrepreneur, Kennita pursues different revenue streams and access points. Her entrepreneurial ambitions reflect breadth and depth, being the principal of the Catera OmniVision Group and a writer and organizer for Our City, Your Vote in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The self-proclaimed “Hustler,” aims to develop objective-based plans for musicians and other independent artists. The big questions she poses to her clients are: “What is the next step? What is the plan? And how do we work to get there?” Kennita’s approach helps artists explore fundamental pathways to exposure, funneling and increasing their access points for revenue streams. Opportunity Kennita stresses the importance of developing relationships and while not all relationships work, she explores opportunities with those who realize the significance of a mutually beneficial opportunity to build exposure. A Fan of Music Kennita is thirsty for artists who excite her. She highlights the pros and cons of mechanisms like YouTube when looking at accessibility. The dueling contrast of having content within a field of too much content is a fundamental element that Kennita knows needs to be addressed. “The internet has made things more accessible, which is a great thing, but it’s also made things more accessible, which is a bad thing.” Podcast Importance Like many entrepreneurs, Kennita believes in finding the most effective routes to exposure. She shares her belief that podcasts feature as a tool in an entrepreneurs repertoire and as a person of color, Kennita also finds that working with pod-casters of color helps improve access to the table for all hard-working artists of color. Creating Entrepreneur Spaces Edible Milwaukee and Our City, Your Vote are two current projects that Kennita is very excited about working on. She’s created a music and food column, which appear in Edible Milwaukee, and is an organizer for a Get Out the Vote campaign in Milwaukee. Ultimately, Kennita believes that she is creating a “culture of independent music”. While doing this, her entrepreneurial spirit is the anchor that helps gather and lead like-minded artists to a new and shared space for success. Finding the Beginning Recognizing the importance of peace and ease, Kennita emphasizes the beginning for any entrepreneur starts with finding an inner calm and peace to start moving forward. From experience, she understands that business success is an ongoing process. Motivated to reach her goals, Kennita does not quit, but is grateful for her individual successes. Goals and Goal Setting Vision boards help Kennita find her entrepreneurial focus. Her work and ambition never stop as Kennita continues working towards her goals essentially, finding revenue streams to achieve entrepreneurial success. She shares some critical advice: “Having multiple opportunities for revenue is essential.” Additional Information: LinkedIn: Kennita Hickman E-mail: Kennita@cateromnivision.com
