Being the biggest (in size) of 9 siblings, Omolora realised at an early age that she looked different from most people. Nevertheless her larger than life personality made it hard not to love her. She refused to get off the bus so children wouldn't ridicule her in high school & would hide during lunch time avoiding to purchase food. But with a bit of motivation from one of her teachers; she emerged as Head Girl, she made history TWICE being Guild President at University of the West Indies (Mona) for 2 years consecutively and the FIRST plus size National Festival Queen of Jamaica!

Shira Rosenbluth, LCSW, returns to discuss what it means to live a full life in a fat body. She catches us up on eating disorder recovery (two years after her first time on the pod), coming out as queer, how her relationship with her fiance has impacted her body image, planning a wedding as a plus-size bride, and what it's felt like to witness the constant chatter of GLP-1s while recovering from a life-long eating disorder. Last time she was on the pod, we spoke about her experience with atypical anorexia and quasi- recovery. Now, two years later, we hear about how her recovery has solidified, why restriction is no longer an option for her, and what has helped her stay firm in that place -- despite the negative thoughts and noise from diet culture.  Listen to hear more about:  What's on Shira's plate How her recovery has been going since the last time she was on the pod Why lab values are not always a good indicator of how sick you are Realizing that restrictive behaviors no longer serve her How her relationship with her fiance has changed her view on restriction  Why creating a life outside of eating disorder behaviors is just as important as stopping the behaviors themselves Why being nourished enables room for reliance in other aspects of life Her experience coming out as queer and living authentically herself  That people in all sized bodies find love, and thinness is not a prerequisite for finding a loving relationship  How recovery is full of ups and downs and is not always blissful  Planning for a wedding in a larger body Making sure you utilize resources to support you navigating recovery  The impact of Ozempic on eating disorder recovery So much more!   Shira Rosenbluth, LCSW, is a licensed clinical social worker treating clients in New York and California. Welcome back to another episode of Science of Slink!  This week Dr. Rosy Boa explores the science and social aspects of pole dancing, focusing on how the practice can be inclusive for all body types. Charlotte Bowens: Founder of Conscious Gear and trailblazing innovator behind VestaPak, the world's first plus-size hydration vest. From university administrator to entrepreneur, she fearlessly reshapes the outdoor industry.  Motivated by a personal health scare, she champions inclusivity and empowers the plus-size community to embrace an active lifestyle. Founding Story: A Transformation and a Vision  It all started with a health scare that jolted Charlotte's life. An unexpected visit to the emergency room revealed high blood pressure, high cholesterol, severe depression, borderline diabetes, and a stark classification of "morbidly obese."  The avalanche of this diagnosis could have overwhelmed anyone, but not Charlotte. Charlotte made a decision that changed her life's trajectory. Fueled by fear and a fierce determination to regain control, she took her first steps towards transformation at the gym. The journey was slow and arduous. On that initial day, she could walk for only 2 minutes at a modest 2 mph on the treadmill. But that wasn't the end; it was the beginning. Every day, Charlotte persevered, placing one foot in front of the other, pushing through every personal limit, and defying her own expectations. Sixteen months later, she crossed the finish line of her first 50-mile ultramarathon—an extraordinary feat of physical and mental strength. However, this triumph was also bittersweet. Charlotte felt proud of her incredible achievement and continued her ultramarathoning journey but as she looked for outdoor gear and apparel to accommodate her taller, curvier, and bigger body, she encountered a glaring problem. The market offered limited options that catered to her specific needs if any at all. Existing outdoor gear companies had overlooked a significant portion of the population, neglecting to provide functional and fashionable products for those with bigger bodies. It was during the challenging times of the pandemic that Charlotte made a solemn vow: if no one else was going to do it, she would. Conscious Gear was born, emerging as a symbol of resilience and innovation. VestaPak was nominated in October 2023 by USA Today as one of the top ten products for outdoor adventurers and is currently sold at REI. *** Don't miss out on the latest episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast, released every Tuesday at 7am UK time! Send us a textWow, what a fantastic conversation with the fabulous Emily Williams - and our first to be released on YouTube (you can watch it here!)Emily is the Director and Co-founder of Every Body Outdoors and loves the outdoors - at the moment mostly cycling and wild swimming, but also paddleboarding, canoeing, camping and exploring and anything else that looks like fun. In her day job she works as a self-employed knitwear designer and technical editor (specialising in plus size grading of hand-knit patterns) and is a campaigner advocating for better active travel infrastructure in the highlands. Emily shared with us how she has always loved outdoor activities and adventures and how she became an activist to lobby for size-inclusive clothing. She has been putting herself out there, representing how those in plus-size bodies can have the adventures that we usually only see straight-sized and thin folks go on. Every Body Outdoors is building a community exclusively for people in larger bodies who want to explore outdoor activities. They review clothes and gear, and they run regional walks. We also talked about the brilliant short film 'Capsized' that showed Emily and her friend Lisa on a canoe adventure in the Scottish Lochs. We chatted about their journey, how getting the right gear was so much more difficult and labour intensive for Emily than Lisa, and how the film is meant to show people that there is a place for every body outdoors. In 2023, she became a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit rookie and has since branched into television hosting.
